Maybe they're blowing their load because the roster is actually big? In XY, they had to spend time on developing 3D models for all 721 Pokémon as well as alternate forms, animations, moves and the 3D overworld. In SM, all they have to do is make a new 3D overworld and new Pokémon, plus a few new moves, and that's it. It's been 2 years, they've had plenty of time to implement 130+ new Pokémon.

The rate of reveals is not necessarily indicative of how much a Pokemon in total a generation will have, nothing is, but if we do happen to have a short roster again (which isnt too crazy a prediction given kalos set a new precedent for it), then this is bad.
My only guess is that they're stalling because they don't want to reach #1000 until they're ready.

Ash loses the League and falls in love with Serena.
Unable to handle the situation, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that it's Serena telling him she loves him.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that Serena is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the Ash's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase pikacha dies their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

Why did PBR flop again? Was it because it wasn't like Stadium 1 and 2? No minigames? Was it because handheld games could already play over the Wi-Fi?
Sure, the reused models from Stadium sucked. But move animations didn't.

It was "just" battling, with no "real" game.
I actually enjoyed it. It was like babby's first competitive. A few of the stages actually made me think about my team make up, and not just "lel use your starter and whoever has a 10 level advantage."
I would not mind a Stadium game for gen 7. They could do a whole bunch of interesting battle gimmicks, and if they spend 20 minutes to add a few stupid minigames it would probably sell.
I also really enjoyed the draft-like format they had, where you started with 6 shitmons, and every battle you could trade one of your shitmons with your opponent. It was actually fun.
