I wouldn't say they butchered him off of that alone, but it's a bit of a weird decision. Him being more casual when he's around Joker (and the rest of the party) has signifiance, so he shouldn't be as formal as he is during his TV show appearances (which have him use the type of polite speech I'd expect to be translated like this).

I could see it being a problem if that continues past that point in the game, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

If stiff over-literal translation was the problem here, I could see "quite" happening for とても despite the casual tone of the line, but they wouldn't translate ごめんごめん as "my apologies" (that'd make more sense for すみません, which he does actually use when he's using politer speech in the JP version).

If it's just that scene, it might be the translator or editor screwing up and not noticing that he switches from polite speech on-stage to casual speech on-stage. If it continues in his upcoming scenes, though, that's probably a sign that overplaying the politeness is how Atlus USA is trying to differentiate between his real self and the act he puts up, which would be a problem because the difference between those isn't actually that big (he switches from 僕 to 俺 and slips into rougher speech when angry, but past that it's not far off from his normal casual speech).

I don't think it'll necessarily improve, but the problem here could be that these two scenes have him use both polite speech (for one line in the first and his on-stage dialogue in the second) and whoever handled the editing screwed up. In that case, it might be a one-off error, since those circumstances shouldn't be present in the later scenes.

That's why I said it's time to be worried if that continues into the scene with Makoto and the train station scenes. If he's still overly formal then, it's the result of them mishandling his dialogue, not just a misguided editor trying to streamline his dialogue in a scene where he switches speech mannerisms.

I've never encountered that in English-speaking areas myself, but I don't think I've ever been in any where pancakes were that prevalent, so it's probably a regional thing. That part's pretty much a non-issue.

I don't think the localization's been too bad overall (it's been a bit below P3's level so far outside of a few lines, which was pretty poor too), but the thing with Goro's speech could potentially make him seem much more fake to western players than he's supposed to, so that's the first thing that's cropped up that could be a serious problem on par with P3's October 4th changes.

You'd be surprised. Orphans already have it pretty bad, but illegitimate children have it worse thanks to the emphasis on blood bonds, and it's seen as a huge blight on the family name, IIRC. If you want to look into it, I'd suggest reading up on single mothers in Japan as well, as that's almost always a related issue (and one that impacts both child and mother, though for obvious reasons it's a blight on the father if found out too).

So far, it's poor, but still serviceable in that most of the story and dialogue still comes across.

A genuinely bad translation would be something like Fire Emblem If/Fates, where the problems aren't merely stilted dialogue and the occasional poor translation or mistranslated speaking mannerism, but countless intentional changes that lead to most characters (and many scenes) ranging from "significantly different but still kind of recognizable" to "completely different characters who aren't even consistent with the changes to their characterization." Or machine translation-tier, which this isn't (there's been some strange errors, but still a far cry from machine translations).

The localization is so bad that other industry members like 8-4 are mocking it. This only happens with absolute trainwrecks, nobody wants to burn bridges with other industry members for the sake of a quick social media laugh unless it's an absolutely dire trainwreck. For the most part, the translation's actually decent for this part, past a small number of lines (~6-7) where the translation felt slightly off (but seemed to be mostly due to space constraints forcing them to leave small bits out or reword the line, so nothing too bad) and >>172300676.

It's once Goro talks to Joker off-stage that the translation becomes an issue, because all but one of his lines (which was just a "それじゃ…" originally anyway) are still written in the same polite/formal manner as his dialogue on stage when he's actually supposed to be speaking casually. The actual translations for those lines are largely fine meaning-wise, but Goro's manner of speaking is different enough that it makes him come across pretty different (again, he's supposed to be casual here, because he speaks casually around peers and saves the polite speech for TV appearances or around people like Shidou and Sae for the most part).

It's possible it's just a one-off thing as a result of an editor screwing up (he speaks politely during the TV show part of the scene, so it's possible someone made his dialogue throughout the entire scene polite in a misguided attempt at streamlining it), but if this particular issue continues in his other scenes, it's going to be a problem as it'll make his behavior in those scenes come across as much more fake when it's actually very close to how he speaks even when he's not putting up an act.

In other words, keep an eye out for his other scenes, I guess. Most of the other issues in the localization have been pretty minor, but this is the kind of mishandling that could actually hurt how western players receive certain parts of the game.

Hmm, I'm not too bothered by the translation as it's weird to get too friendly with someone you only met like two times. Goro drops the polite talk with Joker because he's one year senior to Joker, and it would be rather weird for him to use desumasu with him. This does not get through quite as well with the English speaking audience.

In Japanese it's the tone and choice of words like pronouns that convey politeness, in addition to using polite speech. However, you can come across as being TOO polite into the zone of patronizing and haughty, or being angry with someone. Hence Goro uses casual speak with Joker because he's not supposed to treat Joker like a senior. It doesn't necessarily mean he isn't polite to Joker. This is why I'm not as bothered about him sounding formal in English.

Assuming it's a permanent problem and not a one-off issue, yeah, that's pretty much it. If they translate all of his more casual scenes as formal as here, the jump from that to his real self later on is going to be a lot more jarring than it's supposed to be - by extension, it'll make his earlier scenes come off as much more fake than they're supposed to, and that in turn is going to make people think he was putting on an act even in scenes where he wasn't.

For what it's worth, he never came across as stuffy to me in the original either. A bit overly friendly, if anything, and that's on both his casual way of speaking and how quickly he starts opening up.

I don't think Goro's shift in speech is purely on him being Joker's senior. This is the same person who makes almost overly friendly jokes the second time they meet ("to think we'd use the same station; I really do feel a connection to you"), and he speaks in the same casual way when he's talking to Makoto (who's a fellow third year student) and the rest of the PT (once he joins them). It seems more like that's just how he talks to his peers, not something he does because of societal expectations.

A fair few of his lines that were occasionally casual sound more in line with what I would expect from Justine, Lavenza, Hifumi, or Yusuke in his fancier moments. If that continues in his other scenes, it's likely to be a problem.

the viability of dual audio hinges on the specific legal wording regarding usage in the contracts between atlus and the actors' legal representation. its a matter of money, the more a company uses someone's work the more money it could potentially make, which means the more money they could negotiate for.

Yes but because Atlus USA want to charge people for them, they have only made them temporarily free, and unfortunately you missed the windows for them. It's only been Ryuji and Yusuke though.
On release I expect they'll put all of the themes up for sale, which is one for every party member + one for Igor & the Twins. These will definitely be paid though.
If you have a Japanese account, they're available there too, but require either a Japanese credit card or a PSN voucher, which is beyond the amount of effort worth putting in for a theme that's inevitably coming to the west.
There is a free 20th Anniversary theme on the JP store though.
