The Japanese one has her clearly questioning the legitimacy of the rumor in the first half of the line, but it also has her adding her input - the English one is just her questioning it, but they stuck rumor in there to shorten the line.
The "thanks" dialogue prompt makes sense in Japanese, since she outright says to him "you don't seem like a bad guy". While in English, she's just asking a question, and a reply like "thanks" seems incredibly out of place and unwarranted.
I definitely agree that context should be taken into account, but the context here is that there's a dialogue prompt that now makes no sense, and after a scene as heavy as this, making the line more ambiguous is silly.

The context for that line is clear enough, I'd say, but the way it's worded does screw up the flow with the subsequent どうも/"Thanks" option. It's not a thanks for Anne saying those rumors don't seem to be true, it's for her saying that Joker doesn't seem like the kind of person the rumors described him as.

It's not an outright awful translation, but it sounds pretty clunky (the wording's more stilted than it should be, and it doesn't really fit Anne's way of speaking), and it messes up the flow of the scene slightly.

Futaba's speech isn't really that difficult to translate. It's a bit on the rough/boyish side and she gets a couple lines where she switches around syllables for a word, but neither of those things pose much of a problem in translation.

If anything, it's Yusuke and his fancy speech that's going to cause problems, or Goro and his varying levels of politeness (that one, in particular, is something Atlus USA has a pretty bad track record with). Possibly Lavenza too, for the same reasons as Yusuke.

Honestly, there's no way to keep the pronoun switch in English. The best they could do is try to keep the general change in his speaking mannerisms (changing from casual-but-polite to rougher and informal), and even then, that's harder to maintain in English than it is in Japanese (especially since there's a smaller level of variation between, say, how he speaks before the first boss fight/after the second and when he's having his meltdown inbetween the two fights).

It'll be interesting to see, in any case, especially since there's a fair number of lines in that set of scenes that I've seen a lot of fan translators mess up.

I disagree frankly. I don't mind straying from the original, when it's justified of course - which is rarely the case. Right now, my biggest problem with P5's translation is the stilted nature of it, and that's part of the reason I hate "subservient puppet." For what's meant to be a dramatic outburst where she just loses it, it's far too neatly prepared; her saying "I won't obey you any longer" or something to that effect is far more impactful than an over-embellished line like the one they went with. It sets a worrying precedent too; that they're going to overdo a lot of her dialogue to sound pretentious, rather than just leaving that as a subtlety that the VA can convey - and the result is stilted unnatural dialogue, that brings down both the writing quality, and makes it harder for the VA to do a good job with delivering it.

I don't think that's a problem if the line hits the same notes the Japanese one does, so my issue is the bad writing. They're trying to give something emotional punch, but the redundancy just sabotages it. They really need to read or re-read Strunk, because I think his guides on writing help a ton with dialogue. It's like they wanted to make sure that they conveyed a certain sense, but they didn't trust their own words and didn't consider that the voice acting could help keep all the words that exist only to explain down to a minimum.

Yusuke's regular way of speaking isn't too bad, as it's mostly just blunt, though he sometimes uses usual wording (the first example that comes to mind here is when he talks about how Futaba managed to take Goro's phone to wiretap it, which he describes as something like "at that moment, Futaba's weirdo personality came splendidly into effect" or something, it's a pretty uncommon word choice even in Japanese). Some of his lines also come across as rather flowery in an almost poetic way, with his awakening scene incorporating an actual poem, IIRC.

Going over writing guides would definitely be a good idea for them, though. Whoever they currently have in charge of translation/editing seems to be struggling a lot with keeping dialogue both natural-sounding and appropriate for the context (not just for the scene, but also the character speaking and the overall tone of the game), and that's best remedied by just reading up on writing in general, as well as looking into other works for ideas if need be (sometimes it helps to see how another work handled a similar type of character, for example).

I doubt that. It seems we've got a similar budget to China, and Sony are the ones doing the Korean translation, not Atlus. The Chinese team and American teams are both making their own UIs for it, just the Chinese one isn't dogshit, since their team seems to be competent. Getting a good typeface in Chinese can be fucking hard with the number of characters there are. They write loan words in English, since there's no katakana equivalent. The typeface they went with isn't beautiful, but it's a lot closer to the original one than the crazy bold one Atlus USA picked.
And dear god the Chinese team did a good job with the UI. It looks downright like Atlus JP did it, and had there not been slight differences like the English font on location names, I would genuinely believe that they did do it.

Personally speaking, I'd consider it one, yeah. The way the word comes up, it's pretty clearly in the sense of "something animated/manipulated by another person," which "puppet" invokes a lot more clearly than "doll" (which most people would associate more with a lifeless object meant to either be decorative or as a toy). That's why I noted "marionette" as an option if they really want to avoid doubling up on "puppet," as that word keeps the same implications clearly enough.

Junpei and Yukari in general are more aggressive in the English version, though for the former at least people don't seem to mind much. It's all over the place, though. In the Answer for example, in the English version the whole conflict over the keys is primarily instigated by Yukari who is needling everybody else when Akihiko steps up to her and starts questioning her. In the Japanese Akihiko is far more aggressive and angry with her, making it clear everybody is on edge rather than just her.

I've said this a lot, but the problem with the English UI has very little to do with the fact it's actually English. They're halfassing things that shouldn't even be difficult to translate. The Chinese UI still had to make a lot of the same changes the English one has to make, but it's doing a much better job at it. If you compare the Velvet Room interface in Chinese with the English one, you can see the perspectives of the text are completely fucked in English, but they're fine in Chinese. That has nothing to do with the characters, it's to do with the art direction.
This extends to basically everything; The battle menu doesn't necessarily have to be hard to translate just because it was originally Japanese, but Atlus USA were lazy when laying it out and stuck text on all over the place instead of following the guidelines that the Japanese and Chinese version use (that are perfectly applicable to the English version too) and made it look awful. Then you have the lack of any thought put into the font choices, where the Japanese version would use a certain typeface, Atlus USA paid no heed to the line thickness and just picked Arial Black and called it a day, so you have shit clashing like in the Gun menu.
They outright redid all of the Location names in Chinese, but they nailed the style used in Japanese, and they hand drew each character too - while in English, guess what? Arial Black again, with lazy perspective warping that differs from word to word.
There are very few problems with the English UI that are actually the fault of the game being translated from Japanese to English, and even putting that aside, where little work was needed on the English front (like for UI elements that were literally already in English), they still fucked them up.
