I have some progress.

Enemies flash white when shot now, and shot markers now flash as well. Added a second weapon, slower RoF but wider spread and more damage. And a miniboss. Also did some UI stuff; main menu, control scheme selection and view scaling.

From a gameplay standpoint, its fairly ready for Demo Day. Presentation-wise, not so much.

Right now it just increases the "alert level" of all rooms by one, which means every room spawns one additional enemy until rest.
I'll also add an ambushed status if fleeing while already cowered, which locks all doors as soon as the player gets into the room and only unlocks after clearing it.
Clearing a room resets the cowered status, and leaving rooms with unaware enemies has no effect one way or the other.

Got my dropdown box working. I was surprised that the default dropdown box in Unity was lacking: the choice box only used a fade in/out animation but I wanted to use a swiping in/out motion instead, and adding some inner padding in the choices made the whole box's height shorter.

So I took the source code for dropdown boxes from Unity's Bitbucket and used it to make a better dropdown box widget.

To access SQL?

I'm working on a silly idea right now. I'm emulating Dofus, faking a large open world for a mobile persistent ORPG by splitting it into single screens. Exiting the screen loads you into a different room in Photon, so I can separate the load up as much as possible for mobile devices, where all I have to really save are changes to the area if no one is in the room.

It's going pretty well so far, but I'm importing my offline tactics battle system to it and I'm tired of rewriting some PHP everytime I want to try something new with how I'm handling player information.

The arrow keys refer to compass directions, regardless of orientation. Pressing Up should take you Northward, even if north is to the top-right or top-left corner of the screen. Even if it's toward the bottom of the screen. Doesn't matter. Up=north. Right=east. Etc.

Yeh, this is a project that has spanned for years now.
Not that I ever had a deadline or even hope of finishing it. I started this just because I wanted to learn the language in a way that kept me fully engaged. I know I'd quickly lose interest if I just slapped SDL with some sprites and called it a game. I like to know what's happening behind the scenes.

Making my own custom String classes, implementing timers, manipulating streams.. it's not really pure "gamedev", but I'm slowly crawling towards progress, and learning an absolute fuck ton while doing so. It's more about bettering myself as a programmer than creating a game. But the game will be a nice cherry on top.

How come? Ever since RPG Maker and GM it's quite accessible in my opinion. Of course, it's still hard, since you have to learn to navigate a pretty complex piece of software to create something, but still. You don't have to forge everything from scratch in assembly, or dwell into OpenGL or DirectX to have something move on the screen.

This isn't a /tg/ thread and tabletop rpg design -- while it does have some overlap -- is a different beast than video game design. If you're curious go check out there. But I wouldn't start a thread about it. And it is worth noting that each edition is quite different.

But in summary: Intrusive mechanics that get in the way of telling a story/playing a character. DnD operates on DnD logic, which is vastly different than normal people logic. As such you can only tell DnD stories with it. To get it to do anything else you'll have to bend it's arm backwards and throw out just about everything.

But it's just a dungeoncrawler right? It's not about roleplay or telling stories, right? Well not quite because every edition has pretty glaring mechanical missteps. This ranges from straight up, glaring imbalance to just bloat mechanics that don't serve a purpose other than to bog things down.

On a more related note: Anyone looking to make games should absolutely dip their toes into traditional gaming. I found it really help me deconstruct the concepts in my head to gameplay "rules" which are easier to transfer over into code.

Encoded ini files are working great for me right now, and are clean and easy to work with. I'll likely stick with them as long as there aren't any performance hitches.

I did a bit of a stress test where, with every single object onscreen, it was opening the ini, writing its coordinates, and saving it, and didn't have any frame loss with that, so with a one-time write of a few object's states, I don't think I'm likely to experience any performance loss.

Progress today not very visible, but pretty important. Mostly to do with how charge attacks work.

+Charge attack tiers are now unlockable. Added a tier for "uncharged", meaning there are a total of 4 levels of charge for heavy attacks; uncharged, charged, charged+1, charged+2. The player's Charge+ and "Charge Attacks" unlocks are now taken into account; if you don't have a sufficiently high Charge+ level, the attack is released at the appropriate moment. Only Charge+2 and above can hold a charge attack indefinitely (just unlocking Charge Attacks or upgrading to +1 has the player automatically loose the attack when it hits max charge).

+Charge+3 is also implemented as a slight tweak; with Charge+3 unlocked, getting to the first charge stage automatically triggers the charge loop and max charge; so once you unlock Charge+3, you have only "uncharged" and "max charge" as your charge states. One of the bonus abilities will cause all heavy attacks to skip this initial charge state and pressing the button will immediately trigger the max charge state

+Added some simple visual effects to indicate charge progress. These may not be final but I like them okay.

+Adjustments to how queued attack input tracking works enables you to combo offset through charge states (i.e. if you dodge at a medium charge level, resuming the attack command will launch the attack at that level). Currently, only a looping max-charge animation can be resumed AS a charge (meaning you can't charge partway, offset, and resume charging from your previous point) but I hope to fix this as I like the charge-to-charge offset mechanic and as it stands, fully charging an attack is goddamn impossible in combat. I just need to figure out if there's a way to remember and restore an animation's frame-time for dynamic montages in UE4, or else I've got a major refactor on my hands for how charge attacks work.

+I guess technically another attack is implemented, though it's just a mirrored anim.

I changed the camera to HDR(high dynamic range) and I am not sure if it pays off in terms of visuals (because it takes quite some more resources)

The first clip is with HDR and the second is without like it was before. I used some post processing from the Adam Unity demo in the HDR clip in the start.

Started adding in capital ships. These work like tanks in Battlefield. You can get in and man them, and other players can gun the turrets. Right now I have cap ships spawning and you can get in/out. Need to fix up a bunch of cosmetic issues but it works fine. Adding the mannable turrets next.

Really fucking easy game - dungeon diving, no story, just clear the 10 dungeons after rolling a character (or not).
After that expand it with rolling characters, an actual story, and so on.
Or you could theoretically pull some strategy game shit, it's a really niche area after all that's relatively easy to program because >graphics >in strategy
