it's very different from tekken just in terms of gameplay. there's more char specific focuses thanks to weapons and weapon ranges and weight classes and all that, guard button itself is a big difference imo, and there's more of an emphasis to actually poke and lock your opponent down instead of purely playing with range and movement like in tekken.

i mean, when you take the time to really get down to the nitty gritty and learn it, then you see that it and all 3d games essentially demand the same skillset of a player (strong reads/handle on rock-paper-scissors situations, reactions to specific animations to determine a move, knowledge of frame data mainly), but actually playing that particular game is very different.

That's not called researching matchups. You play against dhalsim a couple times then realize you always get hit when he teleports and learn to hit him. Not every character is popular at every level so you may have to fight 5 ryus and learn how to fight a ryu of your skill level before you can even be matched against a mika or fang.
