Okay, what if I brought a game like FFX where all the previous FF gameplay mechanics were the exact same?
Would it not be reasonable to want to buy that for the story?

I was just using that as an example though. I can say the same thing for hack n' slash games like God of War. Gameplay is entirely the same, story is different.
Surely nobody's gonna buy a sequel to a game just for the gameplay, even though the gameplay is entirely similar to the prequel.
