He's right in the wrong ways. The problem isn't that character creators were too complex or had numbers, it was that there is no context for the true weight or meaning of the numbers until after you've played and dissected the game. In some games dex is mandatory, in others it's worthless as fuck. In some games int is critical for being able to even do shit, in others you don't want to invest a single point. Vitality is either the most important or least important stat in many games.
From a designer's perspective, just shitting out options on a player is ultimately meaningless since there's no way for a new player to know what they are making. He's dismissing the entire system and "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" instead of just tweaking these systems.
Giving players guilt-free respec opportunities at a reasonably early area of the game is a decent choice, as is not even having stats/bonuses be choices until you've experienced the gameplay. Similarly, to say that an attack should always hit is diminishing from high risk/reward gameplay. He's right that you should find ways to draw in a player, but he's wrong in that they should not immediately rewarding and consistent. He could learn a lot from casino models.

Archers tend to be relegated to the girly archetype so they can be feminine but also feel like they could contribute in a supportive battle role. Makes sense but it's played out.
