It's hard if you try to tackle content that's above your level too early (which is pretty easy to do since the game unlocks a lot of late-game content before you're ready).

Couldn't really tell you, Unity decided to shit its guts out in the middle of playing it.
Keep in mind I hear the special edition or remaster or whatever you want to call it is definitely worse than the original.

Mostly its not a very good RPG with more of a tendency on tactical shooter, but even then it's a bit simple. By comparison it has a similar level of detail in the world, it's just the gameplay isn't too robust with things like skill checks or how combat slows things to a crawl (start-stop-start-stop-start-stop-start-stop when you could ideally just have like one encounter per area)
