Everything in it is off the shelf, yet it's the perfect combination of cheap and powerful, that only happens during a full moon every 100 years.

For a 2 year lifespan it has an amazing game library. Sega were doing their best to try to stay in the console business but even their best wasn't enough.

Gold has some plot pointless and badly designed levels added to it, play TDP and then 2. You can then choose to suffer through 3. I wouldn't recommend playing gold on a first playthrough, it'd ruin the experience, but although I say it's bad by Thief standards, it's not bad bad. 3's an okay game, but it's a terrible Thief game. After 3, just play Dishonored without using magic and pretend you're Garret - 4 is that bad, you don't even want to consider playing it.

Then go play Deus Ex 1 and System Shock, and then you can join us all in our revelry in how bad the industry's gotten since.

I was in the same boat recently and ultimately decided to play The Dark Project over Gold. There's a mod called GoldToDark if you have a digital version of Gold that will revert it to TDP.

Great game, and Thief 2 gets way better.

It's a dungeon diving game, the dungeons are just giant monsters with lots of lewd slimy shit inside of them. Make it to the treasure if you can avoid the temptation of lewd slimy shit.
