That's true, but largely because a) Japan had a massive head start in these media, so they already have professional artists and scenario writers (or at least amateurs with experience) in place, while the West has to make do with beginners and b) anything that gets an English translation is the cream of the crop.

Give the West a decade and they will get fairly decent at it too. Not amazing, mind you, but at least something you can play and enjoy instead of having to question your life choices after the experience.

I used to play it on the bus on my psp. I think that combat system was a big part of the reason why I stopped playing video games. Nothing feels worse than getting killed by Chinese Berserker when he was down to ten health because I guessed wrong twice. It gets better once Saber levels up more towards the end game and you can spam skills but damn, I was ready to throw the system out the window more than once. A boring generic RPG combat system would be far preferable to rock/paper/scissors.

Extra is not unintentionally gay. Overall characters don't make all that many references to your gender, whether you're male or female, which is clearly intentional. SAO:HR lets you choose a female avatar and romance the girls, but I think that was more a product of lazy programming than a conscious decision to allow the player to have a yuri harem since you can go on dates with anyone of any sex anyway. Plus, the characters all treat you as Kirito anyway, even if you're a loli. At least they give you the option of turning his voice off in cutscenes, although there's a weird pause in the spoken dialogue when other characters are supposed to say your character's name so that you can mentally insert it, I guess. I can't remember if they change the pronouns or not, because the dialogue is so awful that I usually skipped it. Other characters still treat you as if you and Asuna are a couple anyway, and there's no way to divorce her like in the older games.
About the best I could do is go on dates with female NPCs. When they want you to do an errand quest for them, they send you creepy emails saying that they want to see you again and that they can't stop thinking about you. VR technology obviously turns everyone into yanderes.

As far as I remember it only changed team once.

The first team had a partial translation going on (not close to being finished though) but was stalled on the technical front and eventually gave up. They released their translation and the technical information they gathered while trying to crack the game but not their hacking tools, with the logic of "if you don't have your own hacking tools already you're not going to manage to crack that game with ours anyway".

Then a year or so later (end of 2015) the current team started working on CCC and managed to crack it. Not sure what happened next but the previous translator apparently didn't want their work being used (despite said work still being viewable and downloadable by everybody) so the current team had to start the translation from scratch.

Akai Ito is "tame" in the sense that yuri is not the point of the game nor was it ever get discussed openly during the game, and is only stated explicitly at the end of one route (the protag Kei has 1 line saying she wants to have sex with Uzuki).

However, romantic attraction is sprinkled throughout the series, in a subtle yet unambiguous manner. The creator also stated officially that the bloodsucking scenes are stand-in for sex scenes in order to make this a non-eroge. The bloodsucking scenes are very sexual (and filled with romantic tension instead of just two girls acting in a fanservicy manner). This is a title to go for if you're looking for a romantic yuri story with an good plot that has nothing to do with romance.

I’d take it you mean Aoishiro? If you’re looking for romance/yuri it’s far worse than Akaiito. At least in Akaiito we get some explicit confirmation when it comes to Kei’s feelings. Aoishiro on the other hand is way to coy with it’s yuri. Also in at least two routes it manages to ruin whatever yuri there is, by having the ending be “best rivals” or some stupid shit. None of the Akaiito endings undermines the relationship between Kei and the main heroine.

In any case, if somebody doesn't care about plot and only want yuri, Akaiito would be the go-to option.

There are definitely people on 4chan who make art for free to practice, but don't count on it.
