Video game preorders have been a big thing in the west for a long time, though harder for indies to manage. Building up a batch of excited fans before your official launch date helps set off a concentrated burst of enthusiasm which might be able to snowball into better sales. Nothing wrong with supporting crowdfunding, especially for yuri games. It's not like these are a bunch of people asking for money so they could go to a concert or some shit. This is one of the rare times westerners could show japan that they are interested in this kind of game. Honestly I'm just glad there are more yuri content in games now, even if it's just mostly VNS. It still takes a lot of guts for a studio to gamble with a yuri, knowing how stingy people could get sometimes.

Meh. Not that I don't have standards of course. I won't touch RA with a ten foot pole but I do support their effort and hope that they do well.

Because they delay delay delay, and add more and more kickstarters without delivering on their older ones. By now they have like over 50 tba's.
They also have TERRIBLE communication. Their last major game had a march released penned. Second last day of march, delay to April, no reason given. It came out end of April, but nobody ever knew what's up and they didn't really announce it either. Not even 24h before release they dropped a random twitter message or something.
And if that's not all bad enough, their translations and such also suck hard. They are pretty damn bad. Note that they also function as a publisher at times, but that doesn't change that something like "Sound of Drop" is under their label. (Though stuff like Fault is terrible enough, or World End Economica.)


Yeah, it's bad. It's really bad. People start to realize this, which is good. You really shouldn't give them money on any kind of crowdfunding platform anymore.

Delay from March to April was for the bad communication. They've stuff delayed for more than a year by now. The initial release for WEE3 was supposed to happen May 2015. We have May 2016 and it's not even fully translated, yet do we have a release-date. That's kickstarter too.

No examples of bad translations? I've given some. But I can also make it easy for you: EVERYTHING they've done themselves is bad. WEE, Fault, whatever. The only fine ones are bought fan-translations. (like Grisaia)

It's not hard to see the issues with them, as they are everywhere. Doesn't matter which release, series, whatever.

I've seen people post examples of the 'terrible' translation before and it's usually nuance stuff plus English that's perfectly readable but not very stylish. The translation may not be perfect, but if you were in the VN fandom back in the day when official translations used to come out in bizarre engrish, they seem fine.

Really their biggest problem is the constant acquisition of new titles much faster than they can actually translate and release them, which combined with the kickstart-everything philosophy makes a lot of people feel like they're being scammed.

Nah, it's not just that. WEE is actually bad enough that it's supposed to get a complete retranslation. And fault has completely different sentences at times completely altering what's originally said.

Of course there were terrible translations back then as well, but we aren't "back then". We have Mangagamer, as an example. And if you compare them, Sekai is super bad. That's just how it is. Their attitude also doesn't help. (Jast is pretty bad, but they seem to care. Sekai doesn't)


The easiest way to describe them is: Unprofessional. Ever since a chatlog of their Grisaia team got leaked where they trashtalked about how shit Frontwing is, I know there's something really bad going on with Sekai. I don't know how much truth was in that log, but that doesn't even matter. It's unprofessional as fuck. And, oh wonder, Frontwing quickly ditched them and does their own thing now, apparently even with solid translations. While Sekai delays the next Grisaia titles more and more, which they still have the old license for.


Well, enough about that, it's not really too /u/ related aside of their newest /u/ crowdfunding. And all I can say there is: You should probably ignore it.
I'm.. not even sure if Sekai can stay alive if they continue like that. Licensing only, never releasing stuff. Crowdfunding giving less and less. And what they release bombs as well.

Limited downloads has nothing to do with DRM, you can have a DRM-free release with only one download allowed ever that expects you to make your own backup. (Limited downloads are more COMMON in DRM-free situations, since the game isn't linked to a verifiable account so there usually need to be download restrictions in place to prevent the link from being shared with the entire internet)

Most game sellers will give you a new download if you ask politely, though. If they don't that's a bit rude.

Have you ever been in a professional situation where a team from your company had to collaborate with a team from another company? The two teams can (and will) be perfectly professional when interacting with each other, but once they are back behind their companies's doors the trashtalking will begin. In private both teams will complain about every little mistakes the other make, while finding excuses for their own.

"Never" her means essentially just that literally everything they don't just publish gets delayed. They just collect tba's. Of course it doesn't mean literally never ever. Nothing about JAST is caring, they just share some staff with Mangagamer and let fan noise make changes. Hell, they posted every Flowers spoiler CG as "advertisement", announced the Flowers demo at the bottom of JList's newsletter and let everyone else to discover it before announcing it properly, and you know the rest.

Was anyone else sorely disappointed by ATOM GRRRL?

The characters didn't really act like women, and even less like lesbians. It seems like the creators wanted to lure in the yuri crowd just to make a quick buck, but would've been better off writing about guys with how uncouth and dirty the characters were.

It's a bit of a shame, the art was really cute and the voices were okay. But it just didn't come off as "yuri" at all, other than the forced and rather unromantic sex scenes.

It's worth going through the trouble to learn Japanese than to depend on mistranslations. I mean, this photo speaks for itself; unless you know the language, you probably won't see this translated until 3+ years after the release date -- or never.

Well, it might get better. In fact, it'll probably turn out well. JAST actually knows what went wrong and reorganizes a bit. Basically they realized that blind trust isn't going to work. You could say "well, duh!", but.. you know. They are small. And had a lot of shit to deal with their previous release as well... which is however also based around their structure not working out too well.

I don't know if things will really change for the better, but I think they, aim for quality rather than speed right now. Because they now the quality of the Flower's translation WILL be looked at in great detail. It'd be nice if they can get a team for the whole series going like this. If that's possible, it's not even that unlikely that the third game comes as early as next year. Once you've established a team and gone through the work process once, it gets faster. (things like hacking, engine knowledge, better work distribution and so on)


Well, personally I know some JP, so I could go with that as well. But.. the English version could still work out just fine.

Renowned Explorers: International Society released some DLC yesterday. Part of that DLC were stories focused around the game's main characters.

Maria's story is that someone of your choosing falls desperately in love with her. And the game lets you pick another woman, which is nice.

Unfortunately, it seems poor Molly is going to strike out because she's far too crude for Maria's refined sensibilities.

Now, I haven't unlocked all the other character stories yet, but I suspect Maria's the only one involving love and romance. If so, that would make every woman in the game (except for Maria herself) essentially a lesbian.

It is only "slightly more fleshed out and polished" with a smoother, more rounded art style. I actually think I like it less.

Personally I found the writing much more stilted, like, Yomi, the viewpoint character, felt ridiculously emotionless and bland, Ceri felt like she was just perpetually angry to be angry for a character archetype whereas Chris and Bel in DMC felt legitimately invested and were entertaining to read.

The RPG part also feels a lot worse. Someone did like a five thousand word review on Steam about it, I dunno how of much of it actually true but I agree that the fighting feels less interesting

I don't really recall DMC's combat, but I didn't really remember being blown away by it. THe combat in SD does have the guard/recover merge, but it also has more stats/resistances, so that adds another layer of depth. It's RPG standard.

I'm actually surprised at how much I'm enjoying the game. You can say whatever about the quality of the writing, but there is a lot more dialouge in this compared to DMC. I like how the monsters have quite a few little quips during the events. The 'main' party members also seem to have dialogue for almost every event, which is cool too.

A lot more CG than DMC too, which is nice.

Honestly, it could be worse in every other way, but just the fact that I don't have to see the same fucking dark, gray walls in every dungeon that DMC had makes me like this one better.

It also adds the concentration mechanic and flow/panic states. I also like how they made the outfits strictly cosmetic, so you can change them freely.
And while the writing isn't brilliant, it's certainly not bad either. All in all, this is a massive step up from the previous Sakura games.

Not having to grind up all the gold for outfits like in DMC was great.

Though all these outfits were too lewd for me so I stuck with the starting ones.
