I'm pretty sure it's because a lot of people grew up on those three cartoons. You didn't need to read the comics to be an expert, and you can just use Wikipedia to pretend that you are.

To be fair you can be an expert on any comic book character after 10-20 minutes on their wiki page, it's how I got into comics just by reading the plots of major DC events without buying a single comic
