could make it look like the guns are attached somehow, not just floating on the side of the pig, 40k up the riders somemore, drill your barrels... job's alright but you could have done a little more in the modelling dept. Agreed the price on GW bike boyz is absurd. Can you post a pic showing the gun side?

I did the whole drybrushing like Saint Duncan told me to, but then went back to clean it up with layers, blending and highlights on every feather anyway.

Pic is from a few days ago.
>>
>>50901881
While a blue wash could help tie the wing together a bit, it may also end up divorcing the wing from the main body visually.

Then again, something to put a bit more dpeth to the reddish part of the wing would probably be a good idea.

So maybe a well diluted wash applied quite sparingly to a slightly damped surface, or go full oil/enamel wash so you can purge any excess well and proper.
>>
>>50902005

It was no doubt how the food / energy / warp juice was passed to the gestating primarchs through umbilical cords while in their archeotech incubators
>>
>>50902005

Just because they're born in a tube doesn't mean that a nutrient tube couldn't have gone there or something.
>>
>>50902049
That looks really fucking good anon. I already envisioned having to go over rather feather but wondered if a wash would help first... I'll probably just skip the wash and go heavier on the highlighting.

>>50902065

No. It was implanted when they were found by the Emperor.

They were implanted. Since normal space marines (who are born normal humans) have the black carapace fitted as part of the upgrade process.

WIP test pieces to then do tutorials on.

Pozzed soldier is giving me a slight problem. I wanted to make this as beginner friendly as possible and having the mid tone be a 50/50 mix of two paints is kind of shitty but it's the only balance I can find that I like. The flesh is also a bitch. 3 layers of tanned flesh and it's still not covering entirely but is the perfect shade of pink for the concept art.

Hey /wip/ i have a litle question. I wanna get into mini painting but i don't know whether to buy the army painter hobby starter set or the AP hobby tool kit and buy stuff like paints and brusher separately? And if anyone could tell me if there is any kind of primer in the starter set? Pic related
>>
>>50903193

AP brushes suck. I bought some and there's barely any bristles because the only way they can make sharp tips is by removing bristles, and they shed a lot. I recommend just buying your tools and paints separately. Either get some durable cheap synthetic brushes or dive right into a $13 kolinsky sable. It'll last you many years if you don't dunk the whole length in the pot and mash the hairs on concrete and the sharp tip and full reservoir help even novice painters paint more easily.

So I went and did it. Started making my female IG regiment and became a colossal faggot.

Aside from the fact that I can't do faces for shit and I'm still figuring out what to do with the hair, the uniform and gear turned out better than I had first expected.
>>
>>50903264
carefully.
I tend to just leave rank and file troop eyes heavily shaded but for characters and stuff I paint them at the same time as i'm basecoating the skin so I can cover up any mistakes easily and not wreck a finished face.
>>
>>50903316

That's what I do and it makes them look like they're squinting. Looks better than all but the most amazingly painted eyes. Doesn't work for female models or models with large eyes or anyone not making a mean face.
>>
>>50903245

I mean I guess they're the only real option without chopping up other figures and spending tons of money, but at that point I'd rather just use models with full helmets and tit plate. Putting Statuesque heads on male chests like Eisenkern or IG is just ugly.

Watch makeup tutorials to see how women use different shades to change the way their face looks. it's really helpful if you can extrapolate it to mini shit.

Never buy any brushes advertised as being made for tabletop minis, do yourself a favor and buy quality artist brushes, ideally at a local art store so you can check them out before buying.
You will pay roughly the same and get actual quality tools instead of chinese crap.

>>
>>50903390

>>
>>50903193
The set is decent. Brushes are rather meh, but you will waste your first brushes anyway after short time so thats not a big deal.

There is no primer in these sets, so you either need to buy a spraycan (army painter has lots of colors) or a brush-on primer (i recommend vallejo) if you can't spray at your home.

I'd go for the starter set without the tools, because all the tools you see on that pic can be found cheaper at your local hardware store or on amazon or elsewhere. You don't need clippers with a fancy "army painter" logo if they cost you twice the money, you just need clippers.

But if you lazy and not overly concerned with money, that set has everything you need besides the primer.

I really don't see the point of this. Female soldiers look exactly the same as male ones once they have all their kit on.

The only way you can tell the difference would be with a level of detail that simply isn't possible on the 28mm scale. Not without making the difference stupidly obvious.

Man Necrons must be the fastest army to paint ever. Just slop or spray silver, brush a wash, slop texture paint on the base, drybrush and/or wash, and you're done.

I mean, if you took any modicum of care and time to make sure the job was neat, it has to be the fastest and easiest to get a nice looking army out of. Just thinking about it makes me so angry that it's so easy, that I just want to paint up an entire Necron army just because I can, I don't even want to play with them.

/wip/, I seem to have a problem involving casting. I like using small little things like Lizardmen Jungle Swarms, and Tyranid Rippers as wound markers, but getting enough of them is sometimes quite a challenge. I was making molds with OOMOO, but then when it came to the liquid inject resin, I had issues with air bubbles. Now, I'm using Oyumaru and greenstuff/milliput, but the problem now is pictured.

I like using the Oyumaru because I can somewhat see if the stuff inside is being filled correctly, but I'm unsure if I can safely use resin in that stuff.

Is resin my only real option for such small things, or is there something I'm just kind of missing?
>>
>>50906756
To be more specific, the problem is the molds not touching together 100% because of the material, as well as when they do touch correctly the flash is batshit bad.

Use lego to build a frame
Introduce oyumaru hot in it
Put piece you want to cast
If possible use a rubber brust to smoth the surface
When solid introduce second part of hot oyumaru
Press
No, they won't fuse
Wait till also solid
Separate them
Heat the first part of the mold and repeat process
Then heat the second part of the mold
This will remove most of the seams

Also I use milliput standart (60%) + greenstuff (40%) and the result is fantastic
>>
>>50909084
it'll stick to almost anything providing it's not greasy.
Think of it as an sculptable and moldable epoxy glue almost.

Now, you can use glue on greenstuff, because it's composition is in certain ways similar to superglue.
So if you use superglue on greenstuff the surface touching the glue will cure incredibly fast and end up with a much harder finish than normal.
This is sometimes done deliberately as a greenstuff + superglue bond is extremely durable.

>Someone saved my drone conversion
Holy shit, I'm giddy. Thanks!

I'm working on my Shadowsun's jetpack right now. I tried the grav-inhibitor drone parts and they fit almost perfectly on the back of the torso I'm making and I don't even have to do anything at all (which I admit is kinda lazy but if it fits..).

It's a bit on the larger side but considering the fusion blasters are as big as her anyway, no difference. I'm just unsure which setup to use. Horizontal or pointing diagonally up (which fits better but might make her look too big). The fluff I have in mind is that the sphere allows her to manipulate the gravity around her suit, giving her that sweet 3d6 thrust move her warlord trait allows her.

Advice on which to pick?

This is nice.

Setup 1 looks better. Tau have very few hard 90 degree angles as "large elements" within their design. It might look more balanced with arms and weapons on though, right now it looks top heavy.

Is this a count-as shadowsun or actually meant to be shadowsun?

Also thank you for your feedback! you're perfectly right on the angle bit, I won't be sticking it on until I have finalized the arms and chestpiece neither so I'll post again when I finished them. I'm leaning towards 1 as well, and friends I ask have also told me 1 looks more natural, so quite pleased with the outcome.

Its just pre-thinned paint meant to be usable in an airbrush straight out of the pot without further thinning it down. Of course you can just brush it on. Its just thinner than regular paint which can be good or bad, depending on how you like it.
Some people prefer to thin their paint themselves.

>>
>>50912553
Metals generally go on thickly and don't take well to being thinned with water, use acrylic medium instead.

White and yellow are usually fine as long as you don't try and paint straight over black.

>>50912533
Yes and no, they are pre-thinned so if that's thinner than you prefer to work with...
>>
>>50912522
No, he'll use the Leadbelcher Base, like the one I have and probably everyone else in here.

>>50912553
Yellow, White and off-whites and Gold, but really all you need to do is actually thin and don't try to paint those straight on without undercoating.

If your gold doesn't cover, then try a brown undercoat on the gold areas first.
Yellow benefits from an undercoat as well, say something like Zandri Dust if you're in citadel.

White you must almost always build up to from a grey or beige. Nobody just applies one layer of white and gets a smooth finish.
>>
>>50912605
>>Yes and no, they are pre-thinned so if that's thinner than you prefer to work with...
I get the result I'm happy with only when I thin them down to almost no pigment at all. Of course, I still use base colours, but from then on, if I don't make a 9:1 in favour of water, results tend to spiral down exponentially.
Thanks, will definitely try them out when I get next batch.

Dryfit most of the parts I'll be using along with a slightly modified CSM chestpiece and an insignia I plan on sticking on the front. I heard the anti-grav sphere on the back made it look top-heavy, but with arms and fusion blaster on, how's it look?

The arms will be topped off with hands and I will repose both arms slightly. Not really a fan of the gormless look on her face though, might give a male tau head reassignment surgery, for the greater good.

I have only one pic of in progress Alpha Legionnaire and bad light so I can't take a decent pic.
I basically do layers numbering in tens, where the first is barely visible. The way PaintingBuddha did an Ultramarine on YT.
It's painfully slow process, but I like the results and once painted, the army will be forever so what the hell. It also helps that it's relaxing.
Hope you can see it, took me two or three hours, the first time I tried it. Fourth mini I've tried painting after about a decade.

Read the fucking manual, it's worth having a read beforehand just so you know what you're doing. Do things in the order they say EXCEPT for the armour plates, but that's covered in Duncan's videos on assembly and painting.
https://youtu.be/njhLv_nyP_s

I'd also actually recommend plastic glue for the knight, although I know that's heresy for some people round these parts.
>>
>>50910870
you could always get into the flaming mess that is Warmahordes.
Alternatively, you could get into Guildball/Blood Bowl. I think those rules are fully established at this point?
>>
>>50913267
>>50913291

OK, nice. I have plastic glue ready too, but superglue might help for some fiddly bits, quoth says Saint Duncan.

So build the legs, torso and arms separately, then do the base. Seems simple enough. Still a bit of a newb to this so I haven't done subassemblies when painting before, although I expect that I want to leave the torso and legs separate for ease of transport.
>>
>>50913388
Yeah, you might want to look into embedding magnets into the torso and pelvis before you glue.
>>
>>50913401
OK, not really looked into magnetizing stuff before. Can I get on and assemble the torso and the legs now and then look into the magnets when they're done?
>>
>>50913488
You can, but its's WAY easier before you do major assembly.

You can alternatively just leave the place where the torso and pelvis meet off from the rest of the assembly.
>>
>>50913488
You spent way too much on this model to NOT magnetize it. And especially if you are using a glue that melts then bonds the plastics and not superglue, which can be snapped by putting it in the freezer.
Dont fuck up a paintjob by snapping arms off when you need a new set of weapons, paint all your options.
>>
>>50909971
What are those skeletons from?
>>
>>50913770
OK then. I'll look into it. I may put the legs together now, though. Doesn't seem like those need changing at all, and that way I can work on the base.
I haven't done any magnetising, though, and Knights look a bit fiddly.

Change your colour scheme first. Tyranid's carapace is supposed to be darker than the skin. It doesn't work otherwise. Look at other colour schemes for black Tyranid's. I'd suggest using a light grey rather than the black and replacing the monotone greens, reds, blues on there for complimenting/normal colours.
>>
>>50913850
They're Bretonnian Men-at-Arms bodies and helmets with Skeleton arms and skulls. I did something similar a while back and I wish I hadn't now, seeing the prices Men-at-Arms go for on ebay. Looks really nice and is pretty easy though, just shave the top of the skull off and cut the head off from underneath the helmet, cut the skelly arms in half at the elbow and glue it all together.

I really wish they hadn't scrapped the Men-at-Arms and Free Company boxes, they were such a great source for conversions.

>>
>>50915135
cheap painters acrylics have fewer and larger pigment particles making the cover uneven and grainy.

If can work but it'll be like eating soup with a fork.
>>
>>50915135
Any stuff you add to make them as workable as proper miniature paints will end up making them as expensive or more than the regular paints.

As the other anon said, the pigment in craft paints is much less fine than in paints made specifically for painting miniatures, so will tend to look thick and chunky no matter how well you thin.

If you insist however, matte medium, flow improver and possibly even drying retardant are the things you should be looking for. Vallejo carries all of these.
>>
>>50915161
>>50915208

A pity, that. Appreciate the honesty though. I'll keep on truckin.

>>
>>50916350
Thinking on it, I'm betting the smaller chestpiece makes everything look bigger by comparison. Normal stealthsuits have a huge noggin and torso so that's the only explanation I can find why my bigger arms can't seem to lift the guns. So perhaps after I give Shadowsun a ponytail, bulk up the chest a bit and give her shoulderpads, that'd make her midsection's profile larger and more proportionate.
>>
So after looking into magnetizing my shiny new Imperial Knight, I think I'll give it a shot. Will be my first time using magnets or greenstuff, so it may be a bit tricky. At least the legs don't need magnetizing so I can build those now.

Where do you get your magnets from, /wip/? Obviously they need to be strong enough to hold Knight parts. Preferably somewhere that doesn't cost a fortune of shipping to Britain, either. Also, can I just glue them in with superglue or what?

Sword/gauntlet swap, waist, carapace mount+swapping missile types, gatling/other main gun swap, battle cannon/thermal cannon and battle cannon ammo/thermal gun tanks.
Maybe the pintle gun too. Anything else I need to glue magnets into?
>>
>>50916944
Rare earth magnets of ebay or moddeling sites, various sized available.

strong enough magnets tend to rip out from just superglueing it flat onto plastic, they work best embedded in the plastic for snug fits.
