Hey WIP, looking for suggestions on a conversion/kitbash idea.

I'm looking to make a sort of mortal Avatar of Khaine model based off this pic related banner for an Age of Sigmar themed army and I'm wondering what models/minatures should I look out for that might allow we to come close to looking like the guy in the Banner?
For the head, I was thinking of getting the Tenebrael Shard's head or maybe even just get some Witch Elf hair to stick on the back of another close resembling head.
For the body, I simply thought maybe The Deceiver or Nightbringer models would be the closest thing to use.

Anyways, thoughts if your willing to share them please?

Hey /wip/, decided to paint up my BaC guys as Alpha Legion. Tips?
>>
>>50852790
left but do it with red washes over silver to give a metallic red look

similar technique to this http://www.mywargame.com/2010/02/14/painting-metallic-pre-heresy-thousand-sons/

but I'd just build up red washes over the silver
>>
>>50852837
I've just painted an army of Alpha Legion like that, I don't have an airbrush so it'd be difficult to make it look good on tanks, and I'm immolating all the way.
>>
>>50852814
>Sisters with the right scheme would have red hair, not white.
Sounds like a bad idea desu.
It's just gonna look weird. Just go with natural haircolors or have them all straw blonde.
Using a color from the armor on the hair is just gonna make it look like 'helmet hair'
>>
>>50852850
I suppose I could just give them all differing shades of hair, sort of like how you can do the same with Vostroyan hats to add variety to otherwise identical mooks.

Good idea. Some of them will still have red hair though.
>>
>>50852858
Yeah just saying you should be careful about it ending up looking too plastic.
If you want to paint the hair red, you should probably pick a different color to highlight and paint glossy highlights or differentiate the texture somehow else.
>>
I'm at a loss here guys, my clippers have somehow become magnetized. How do I demagnetize them?
>>
>>50853115
I wish my clippers were magnetized.
>>
>>50853123

It's only a weak field, its enough to hold xacto blades to itself. I was fucking around with 2inch neodynium magnets, i assume that has something to do with it
>>
>>50853139
>Enough to hold xacto blades
That's convenient enough. picking up a stray xacto blade sitting flat on a desk can be dangerous.
>>
>>50853139
Take the magnets from an old hard drive and run your clippers over them randomly.

Merry Christmas /wip/, who else is looking forward to open some miniatures this evening? What are you getting?
>>
>>50853297
how the fuck should I know, it's Christmas. that shit's supposed to be a surprise.
>>
>>50852829
Are you using clear colors over a metal basecoat? If you are, did you mix clear blue with clear green? (at least 75/25 mix). If you only applied clear blue, you would want to lightly spray Clear Green over some areas (airbrush only, do not attempt to hand-brush this step). Alternatively, apply green washes or green glaze but keep it subtle.

are there any disadvantages to stripping a figure multiple times with break fluid?
the only possible danger i could think of is loss of finer details due to excess pressure using a brush.

will multiple immersions in break fluid have any effect on the hardness of the plastic or the bonds of the superglue?

Would a Dark Angels librarian in terminator armor wear green shoulder pads, or white?
>>
>>50854032
Having a Crux Terminatus usually means you are part of the Inner Circle.
Most models are painted with green pads and the regular symbol instead of the Deathwatch one though. Senior members get to choose. Azrael has the regular design on there too.

Strictly speaking this models robes should be yellow though.

>>
>>50854032
Depends.

Is he a member of the Inner Circle/ Deathwing or not.
In the Codex, the Deathwing have their own cadre of Librarians to draw from.
>>
>>50854070
>>50854087
I was under the impression that as a Dark Angel, you must be inducted into the Deathwing to wear terminator armor
>>
>>50854264
I don't think so. Librarians aren't part of the normal chapter organisation. The First Company are Deathwing, Librarians would never be part of the first company.

I expect the Librarium get access anyway. It isn't as if the Dark Angels have a shortage of Terminator Armour.

Been working on this guy for a friend. He's never been one to remove mold lines or fill gaps and I get most models from him assembled. I do what I can, but sometimes I just can't get at things.

There are some touch-ups and tiny details to pick out, but he's almost completed. Constructive criticism always appreciated.

First time attempting to paint a tartan pattern. This master comes from his custom Scottish-themed chapter, so I figured this was a good way to show that.

All artistic endeavors are the process of sucking for a long time before you start getting good. The best way to think about it is to just try and improve on miniature at a time. Yes, that means it sucks to paint a billion space marines or whatever.

Taking it one miniature at a time lets you work on improving your techniques on each of those minis. Look up guides and practice getting proficient each time. If you have a picture of your work I can try and offer some critiques if you'd like.

As for how long it takes, the picture you're referring to is nice but not something that will require hundreds of hours of practice or anything. If you're dedicated, you can probably reach that level of proficiency in 50 hours or so. Keep in mind that mini is very large and so easier to paint details on, and they used lots of drybrushing to make the process faster on the skin.
>>
>>50856919
I know it takes a long time, there's only work, no natural talent and so on. It just feels like a task to slog through shitty mini after shitty mini before things start to turn out okay.

I've probably got 30-40 hours in on painting minis? Then again most of that wasn't focused on getting better, just painting the fuckers and getting it over with.

I sold all my 40k minis a while ago, actually, so nothing to showcase. Gorm there caught my eye because I've been thinking about getting KD:M, but my inability to paint is giving me pause.

I suppose I already know the answer to my question; I just need to keep at it to get better. I guess my actual question is how do people suffer through knowing they're just doing shit over and over? The light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak?
>>
>>50857008
i kept converting models and then looked at the conversions or squad leaders/HQ's and said to myself 'i gotta get better before i paint this. how do i get the skin right?'
>>
>>50857008

For me taking it one mini at a time is how I approach it. I've recently stopped trying to paint armies for 40K/Infinity or whatever, and just painting singles. That's a lot more relaxing because you can just focus on making a good mini.

>I've probably got 30-40 hours in on painting minis? Then again most of that wasn't focused on getting better, just painting the fuckers and getting it over with.

That's why then. You should be painting each mini with an eye to improve until you're satisfied with where you are. Here's a basic recipe for working to get better and make decent minis, assuming you know the absolute basics:

-The first thing is being able to do accurate basecoating. Each bit of the model should be distinct (if flat and ugly looking generally) by the time you finish the basecoat. The belt, armor, gun, etc should all be easily distinguished from one another.

-After you have base coated, do an ink wash. For flesh use reikland flesh shade. Armor should be nuln oil or agrax earthshade.

-Finally, apply highlights. These should be one step higher above your base coat. If you're really looking to improve, work on incremental highlighting. Start with a mix of 60:30 basecoat to highlight and do a broad highlight. Then 50:50 in a narrower strip. And so on until you get to your brightest color.

-Take your time. Speed comes with practice and experience. I generally find focusing on each part of a model (armor/flesh/clothin) makes it easier on me to concentrate and get it done since you do each part in steps.
>>
>>50857112
I found everything that wasn't flesh, faces, etc, pretty simple to make look decent in a hurry. I liked painting tanks and shit the most because of it.

>>50857145
Thanks for the tips, anon. I'll add them to a doc I've had for a couple years now. It's pretty big, but woefully disorganized.

As above, fleshy bits and everything else always gave me the most trouble. With a Tau army it didn't really matter, but when I tried doing some demons for Chaos? Oh boy.

Anyways, I'll cease my pointless whining and go back to soaking up info as a lurker.

>>50857205

Keep at it anon. Flesh isn't too bad once you you get the hang of it. It's just tricky because the more incremental your highlights, the better it looks. This is an image I posted a few threads ago of a 6 month difference in skil. The monk was painted using the recipe I told you above - the Sorceress is the next set of techniques I"m working on (glazing, layering, and a different skin recipe). I've stopped using ink washes except as a specific tool or to correct minor mistakes I make.

How do you guys do your plasma highlights? Do you just paint them blue then drybrush lighter blue or white? My Skittles look a little drab.

So earlier in the year I told mum I was getting into warhammer and I pointed at an airbrush in a magazine and said I would get one of those eventually

>airbrush

>solder iron
Thanks mum? eh, i'll find someway to use them
>>
>>50859697

That method is common and what most of us think to do but it's actually wrong, because the plasma should be brighter near the bottom as that's the heat source. Try painting the plasma white then doing wash or drybrush of light blue then finally dark blue at the highest ridges and edge of the plasma. That will create a realistic glow.

I did the blue with white drybrushing and it looked kinda shit. Like, not terrible, but not plasma-ish.

Now I just paint them deactivated colors. Silver, gold, copper, black, etc. Looks cool and that's what FW has in its artwork of plasma.

How the bone looks from the side. Any advice on improvements? On any aspect really. I have yet to try painting his axe just slapped on some base coat. The armour I never gave much thought to what it's made of, I just chose a colour I liked but now I don't know how I should make it look worn like I've seen some people paint?

I've never done a base before so I'm struggling with that also. I got the gw stir land mud and I bought some cork but I've no idea how to make cork look good or even if it is a material that makes sense in a fantasy universe? Maybe it's supposed to be concrete that people use it for?

Bullshit.
Anyone can git gud with enough practice, sure, but I guarantee that someone like myself, with a natural ability to draw and paint well, has a huge advantage over the rest of you.
If anything people who improve through pure practice and perseverence deserve a little more credit than a naturally talented person, but I don't have to work as hard as you.

As genetic engineering becomes more viable and even affordable thanks to stuff like CRISPR people will probably start altering their children and later even themselves to have these traits as they are desirable. Some.new paintbrushes, and there's a bunch of basing stuff, a few paints and an Imperial Knight Warden on the way. That's going to end the year on a high note.

Thus begins the year of conversions, starting 30k Mechanicum and a lot of their stuff has no official model or really expensive ones, so I'm going to be doing a lot of kitbashing. Going to be fun :)

Two tiny balls of GS and a needle pin is all you need.
Put the balls on his eyes and push the round back of the needle pin in to make indentations/lenses.
Then you can sculpt he straps.

If you are in straya you could also order goggles from victoria miniatures. Made in pewter so you can wrap them around your mini however you like.
Have to pay a fair bit of postage if you are in the rest of the world though.

I have a friend who runs Renegades. Since his units respawn on a 2+ and outflank, you actually get to look at the infantry a lot, so your conversion work will be appreciated. Go for it.

30k Dark Mechanicum have these 20 man fearless tarpits. but from FW they're £37 for 10, and fuck that. I'm going to convert some Chaos Cultists with a few Skitarii heads and melee weapons, and shave off the Chaos, they should work decent as lobotomised hordes.

Also, I have to figure out a way to make Medusa artillery without too many third party parts, since I play at a Games Workshop. Any ideas? The Forge World one looks like pic related. Since the Ordo Reductor have lots of disposable arty, I was thinking of mounting something in the back of a Chimera chassis that looks like a Medusa gun.

Eh, not super much. I just want to break up all the gold in the standard paintscheme since it looks a bit dull imo, since the models lack the red robes from custodes artwork which helps make them more interesting to look at.

Don't take it personal Anon, but if you spend hours to paint a mini, a couple of minutes to take a good photo won't hurt. Especially if you want some critique or advise.

I can't answer your question about the skin, because its hard to see it on your pics.
What paint did you use so far for that miniature?
But thinning usually won't hurt.
>>
>>50870575
Thanks. And yea I took it with a camera phone..so Maybe I'll break out the Cannon point n' shoot when I finish...

I used the "Army Painter" line of paints from the squeeze tube. I did thin them a bit, but not enough apparently.

Maybe I"ll apply a layer of ink to see if it dries, it'll give her skin a smoother look.

Again thanks for being an actual gentleman, and not a total dick...

>squeeze tube.

A dropper bottle? Like pic related?

In general try to have a milk-like consistency for your paint, even if that means it doesn't cover at your first layer. You can always apply a 2nd or 3rd layer of paint, but if its to thick you can't fix it that easily.

My super simple recipe for tabletop standard skin is:
>Basecolor flesh
>flesh wash (a red-brown wash, but brown will work as well if you don't have the flesh tone)
>simple highlights with basecolor
>very tiny highlights on nose and other raised areas

Same with the fingers
>>
>>50870533
You need to thin your paints more. That kind of result usually comes from thick paint and especially from tearing partially dried thick paint that keeps getting pushed around as you try to correct brushstrokes on a small important area like a face. Thinner paint will give a smoother coat AND dry faster on the mini so you so can go over it again quicker without tearing the first layer. If the paint isn't flowing easily off your brush it's too thick and may even be drying and caking up on your brush itself. This is a common problem people have when painting fiddly details. If you are having trouble controlling watery paint consider using some Liquitex Slo-dri blending medium as well to give you more time to work with it. But that shouldn't be necessary.

I see... when you thin your paints to the "right" consistency, how many coats of it do you do? Does that depends on what color it is? Do you keep applying the thinned layers until you get a solid coating?
>>
I was recording a tutorial on painting a warpwolf for Hordes. 4 steps deep I decide I don't like the skin tone and repaint the entire thing.

My painting style means I block in the colours first and then paint up each area to make sure that everything works before I invest too much in any one area. Would a tutorial still work to work from the blocking stages or should I just delete the videos?

>how many coats of it do you do? Does that depends on what color it is?

It does. It also depends on the surface and the color of the primer. A bright yellow might need more layers on a black primed surface than a dark brown.

>Do you keep applying the thinned layers until you get a solid coating?

Exactly.

They're 28mm but truescale (as opposed to the Heroic scale used by geedubs that is closer to 32 mm) so I'd think they probably have the size of a lasgun or something like that

Warlord games is far away from being true scale. You are right about GW being close to 32mm.

Their weapons and minis are huge compared to true scale minis but still tiny compared to GWs extra heroic stuff.

Not even close. The metal ones might be a little bit bigger than the plastic Panzerfaust on my pic, but i doubt its a huge difference.

If you want Panzerfaust shaped weapons in a bigger size, check the Eisenkern range by Dreamforge. They come with Panzerfausts as well, but they are almost twice the size of the one on my pic.

Random Question.... Do you guys keep your armies on display? How do your store your currently "in use" armies? keep them in the army box/transport case or do you keep them out and on a shelf or something and pack it up when you want to play it?
