do we have a camo scheme repository? i'm trying to come up with a scheme for cadians trapped behind demon lines. i was thinking some kind of grey/orange on the tanks and fatigues, but i dont know about the flak armour. any tips recommended
>>
>>50872464
Got everything, which was just a Start Collecting Skitarii box and a new transport case.

How do you guys go about magnetizing your Dunecrawlers? Finished the weapon options earlier today, was wondering how "in-depth" is usual for that model.

Also kind of on the fence about how to do the legs-cockpit connection. Don't want to glue it for easy transport and destroyed effect but the sheer size of the whole would make magnetizing a paint and just having it sit on top looks so wobbly.

>>
>>50872767
Their metal minis are about as good as anyone else's. The pvc minis are a bitch to clean the moldlines from and it can be a challenge to get the base coat of paint on the model as they don't take most primers too well. Even so, they're cheap enough that I'm willing to put up with those problems a lot of the time.

>Random Question.... Do you guys keep your armies on display?

Well, it *is* WIP-related, and although there are a coupla ladz here that have those expensive upright glass display cabinets, most of us don't. There's not enough room, and things around my place accumulate enough dust as it is.

>How do your store your currently "in use" armies? keep them in the army box/transport case or do you keep them out and on a shelf or something and pack it up when you want to play it?

One large brown old-style GW case, plus a large carboard box with custom-cut foam inserts to try to keep the tanks, bikes, and dreadnoughts from getting broken.

You an me both. I've been at this hobby 2 years and I still can't paint anything remotely like what some people post on here.

It can be hard to not get discouraged when you look at some of the pros around here, but it's important to remember they all started out just as shit as we were. Hell, I bet a whole hell of a let of them still think they paint like crap when they compare themselves to some Golden Daemon model or something.

Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked here. Just don't lose heart man. Your shit looks pretty damn impressive for a "pretty new painter". Looks better than my shit at the very least.

Chipping done. Silver bits next. I feel like the chips are garish in some places because of thinned paint and poor brush work, tried my best to keep them small and tidy.
>>
>>50873680
That chipping looks really out of scale. I'm not sure if I would have added the highlights; makes the paint look an inch thick.
>>
>>50873804
I agree, I saw pictures of it on other vehicles and liked the look a lot, was definitely more difficult to do then I thought. I'm still pretty happy with it, I plan on weathering it a lot more and with some of the other details in place hopefully it wont stand out to much(In a bad way).

Isn't it a Land Raider?
>>
>>50873680

I actually dig the effect but I think you overused it and it looks too random. Like the splotches feel randomly place on the large, flat areas, and not with any eye to what caused the damage.
>>
>>50873861
I usually see it used to represent actual holes. Chipping seems to be mostly with just a dark sponge application and then metallic sponge application.

>>50873680
I actually like how this looks, but I agree it doesn't exactly look "realistic" as far as weathering goes. It looks more like an illustration of a tank than a tank. Which is kinda neat in and of itself.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Finally home and getting ready to paint my models! How was your day? I met my baby niece and figured out she loves my deep voice(smiled the whole time) my dad counted my $650 debt paid, my dealer gave me a handful of smoke for xmas, and my dad actually gave me some modelling ideas WITHOUT remarking his 22 year old was painting basement games! My FLGS keep continuously bungling my orders. Like fuck, I want to support local businesses especially since this is such a niche market, but what am I supposed to do when my orders
A) aren't arriving when you say they will
B) Are incorrect
C) Never placed at all

Has anyone else had to deal with this? I live in a remote area so it's either this place or a GW that's an hour away
>>
>>50876088

Looks good, though for a sports team the grey is a drab choice. White on the stipe on the helmet would look nice I think.

Aside from that the only thing I'd spend some extra time on would be the freehand/decal. This is always a make it or break it kind of thing for me.
If you got a great mini with freehand lettering that is just a few brushstrokes it really takes away from the overall impression.

Consistent line thickness and nicer serifs go a long, long way towards taking this to the next level.

All in all it's a great mini, though. Freehanding is just one of those things I obsess about.

Are you supposed to drybrush first then wash/shade or the other way around?
>>
>>50879508

If you drybrush before the wash, the wash helps hide the drybrushing, because drybrushing always looks a bit dusty from the stroking.

If you drybrush AFTER the wash, it will be more pronounced and act as a more visible highlight, such as if you drybrushed fur after painting and washing it.
>>
>>50879508
Depends on what you're doing.

Fur:
>rough drybrush with dark colour
>wash with black or brown
>softer drybrush with lighter colour
>even softer and even lighter

Skin
>base
>wash
>drybrush
>glaze flat areas

One of the models I'm working on currently.
I regularly find that the color of the models changes in photos. In this case for the red cloak I can't see the mid tones and orange highlights. And for the hair the contrast and the colors appear more saturated.

I was wondering if you guys might have noticed a similar thing and should I be painting for the camera or my eyes?

So I just got a huge batch of models for Christmas, and basically all of it is resin. I've only ever worked with plastic/pewter before, so I was wondering what some of the differences are.
>>
>>50881181
The dust will give you ass cancer. Also its fairly easy to mold ut if you put it in warm water, bend, then put back into cold water to harden again. All i know. I've never worked with it
>>
>>50881181
Resin dust is carcinogenic, for one. Wear a masy while you're sanding.
>>
>>50881181
It can break kinda easily if you aren't careful. But your minis look rather sturdy on that pic.

Make sure you use a mask if you do alot of sanding/filing or do it under running water. Resin dust is not good for your health.
>>
>>50880496
The face looks soo good
But the rest looks like ass.
What the fuck is going on here?
>>
>>50879040
Man you paint them all like that, your blowing 90% of the other guys paint jobs out the fucking water. Keep it up.
>>
>>50876664
Thin paints
Watch out for the pooling of ink (scabbard)
Not many highlights after the shade it seems (some depth still somewhat flat, see his face)
Skeleton on hat looks like it was only base coated...
Anon a fair few little things, but in all, a very good job.
>>
>>50876154

Still, get pic related from a hardware store and all is fine. Shouldn't be more expensive than $10. Probably just around 5.

Sup /wip/, looking for some advice.

I got a box of pic related for Christmas. I'm primarily a Tyranid player, and this will be my first time building Guardsmen. I was just wondering if it is hard to paint their chests with their arms are attached, and whether I should build/paint the rest of them before attaching the arms. It seems like it would be difficult with the gun crossing over the front, but on the other hand, I do plan on painting the gun's casing an the armor the same color, so it may be a moot point.

Any advice is appreciated.
>>
>>50882073

Personally I always paint any minis that have a two handed weapon without the arms attached. Much easier that way. Even if the attached gun covers the chest you can more often than not still see the blochy paintjob underneath if you just shimmy some paint down there.

That appears to be Spartan Games' stuff.
That's polyurethane resin, literally usable as a murder weapon, it's that fucking sturdy.
The thin parts can be fragile, but Spartan tends to provide those in metal rather than resin.
The hulls are functionally indestructible assuming you don't take a sledgehammer to them.

Be careful when sanding stuff (thankfully their casts are fairly decent so it shouldn't be too much), as others have said, the dust is nasty stuff.
Beyond that, give the stuff a nice bath and a light scrub before priming, as the mold release may fuck up your primer otherwise.

Yup, I got a bunch of tiny metal minarets as most of the models I got were Ottomans.
>>
>>50882426
Also, I was wondering if you knew a place to get files for small miniatures I don't think my current ones can cut it.
>>
>>50882572
check aliexpress or amazon for a set of diamond files.
Something like link related:

Maybe a local hardware store has them even cheaper, but i wouldn't count on that.
>>
>>50882572
I've generally used sculpting files (designed for soap-stone, they're cheap and they work fine for most resins), and sanding cards (like rigid sanding stick, made of a harder plastic). All available from local art stores.

They even got a mention in the Deathwatch Overkill game. Apparently a howling Griffon was a member of the first squad sent to investigate Ghosar Quintus who got wiped out.

Come to think of it, I kinda take offense that the killed squad was made up of later founding chapters, while the successful one was all first founding, with the possible exception of the Blood Raven.

Looking at the picture, I went a bit crazy while cleaning up the one in the middle so it just looks plastic up close now, so I think I am going to have to tone that down with a wash a little bit.
Also clean up some other areas I missed. It is funny how you just don't notice something until you take pictures of it.

Allows you to have actual contrast in the recesses (kinda same reason you paint white as Ulthuan Grey or Pallid Wych Flesh and just highlight with White Scar).

Also flat black is boring, toned black approaches let you complement other colours on the model and build into nice blue-black or brown-black highlights.

I'm also a massive hypocrite because I used flat black on my Terminator.

I like to airbrush on a gloss varnish (vallejo) before applying any washes / transfers and then finish with a coat of matte varnish to remove shine from the gloss.

The bits that are supposed to be are still shiny enough for my liking.

How hard would it be to magnetize SM shoulder pads? I want to run some of my 30k Marines in recon armor, and I can just omit the shoulders. However, I want to be able to switch for different RoW.
>>
>>50895942
I doubt "recon armor" looks like regular power armor just without shoulder pads.

But if you want to do this, its fairly simple i guess.
>>
>>50895942
>RoW
No idea what that is supposed to mean. Marines wear scoutarmor, not sure if that is a 30k thing though. Never seen a Power Armor marine without pads that didn't just look unfinished.

But you should consider that if you use magnets everywhere you need at the very least 4 magnets for every miniature. Less if you glue metal strips into the pads.
Still it's gonna be a pain in the ass and you have shitloads of tiny loose bits kicking around.

I magnetized 10 assault terminators arms and shoulderpads, cause I didn't have enough pads at the time.
Frankly by the end I felt like I should have just bought more miniatures.

But yeah, you take an engraving bit, hollow out enough space in the shoulder and sink a magnet in there after filling the hole with GS.
Then you smooth the top.

Use a master magnet to determine polarity though, so you don't fuck up the whole thing by having the parts repulse each other instead of attract.

>>
>>50896086
>I might magnetize the arms anyway so I can switch Volkite and/or CCW+BP
As I said I'd strongly recommend against doing that.

I mean if you do this for 10 guys you'll have
>10 bodies
>20 arms with volkite guns or 10 pairs of arms, no sure how the kits are done
>20 single CCW and BP arms
>20 single shoulderpads

that means for a 10 man squad you'll need to manage somewhere between 50 and 60 separate bits already.
Now doing body, arm and shoulderpad separately means using 8 magnets for model in the squad unless you can get around using one for each connecting if the ones you use are strong enough that they'll stick to a metal plate.
That would be 80 magnets for a 10 man unit.

And before you can deploy them in any of these configurations you'll spend 10 minutes fiddling with each part snapping the parts together.

On paper it sounds like a great idea, in practice it's a huge waste of time and sucks the fun right out of painting and everything else.
At least it did for me.

Magnets make sense on vehicle and larger kits like that, for infantry they are pretty much always overkill imo.
As I said I've been there and done what you are thinking about doing now. Just one opinion of course, still think it over.

Always unified. Armor is painted one color, with different trims depending on how ornamental the armor is (I paint WM/H and not WH40k/Fantasy), cloaks are all painted the same (a dark blue/black color, leathers are universal and a few personal touches on each mini here and there.

It's better to have an army fit together. You can still do the militia idea, but maybe have their shields/cloaks all the same unifying color?

I'm still fluffing them really. I've scraped all the imperial logos off the weapons and intend to have them as a very remote wintery medieval/feudal world with imperial tech that has moved away from the worship of the Emperor in favour of their own traditional religions. I'm going to paint them in split half white half blue heraldry.

I'm a little short on ideas when it comes to character models, so will probably be using GW Empire commanders and standard imperial guard priests. The scale will be slightly off but hopefully will just serve to make them stand out a bit.

Just getting into the game, started with space marines, got everything assembled and now need to pick a chapter scheme, but I'm needing some help with it. Apparently I'm just a garbage painter. The hard edge highlighting is impossible for me, and the only thing I'm really good at is drybrushing. I've tried black templars but I can't highlight the black, and the white on the shoulders always looks blotched. I seem to have trouble using red, yellow and gold paints, as they never drybrush well, and even basecoating look blotchy or too thick. Any suggestions for a terrible painter? No one starts out being good at painting miniatures. It takes time and practice, like everything else worth doing.

Go on WarhammerTV on youtube and watch some of Duncan's tutorials, there are loads on how to paint Spess Mehreens.

I'll give some very basic advice here but the key thing to do is practice, practice, practice.

Never paint straight from the pot. Use your brush to transfer some paint to a palette (could use a plate, a tile, whatever). Then, thin your paints. As you're just starting using water to do this is fine. You want your paint to be the consistency of milk - too thick and it will look lumpy, too thin and it will take hundreds of coats and clog up all the recesses.

Never attempt to lay a colour down in one coat. It should take a minimum of two thin coats to build a solid colour. Black and white are two pretty tricky colours to pull off (some people have similar issues with red and yellow). Read or watch some tutorials in order to learn how to paint it well.

Also, don't choose a paint scheme just because it's easy to paint. Choose a scheme that you like (or invent one) because if you have no passion for the colours you've chosen, you'll end up either doing a poor job or just giving up.

Hope that helps and I'll post some of the common /wip/ meme replies.

>Any idea where it's from?

I've purchased some multi-part Heavy Gear models for use in Battletech to represent some home-made designs ("tinker toys"). My first thought was *not* Heavy Gear though, but rather Mekton. In the 1990's, RAFM produced a line of metal models that looked very much like this for R. Talsorian Games' Mekton and later Jovian Chronicles games, but this does not match any of the designs I can find.

You might need to rotate and resize your picture and ask da swell ladz over in /m/. Surely somebody over there will recognize it.

Most folks recommend washing resin models with warm soap and water before priming; the casters typically use a mold release agent on them, and there might be enough residue left on the model to mess with your paint job.
