Built a Skitarii pseudo-character for my Kill Team games. Transuranic Arquebus, cut down a bit, merged with parts of the Tactical Marine sprue to taste. Sharpshooter specialist for sick Ignores Cover.

Thoughts? He still needs a name, I just have him noted down as "Dunestalker" on my list.

Needs at least two bionics eyes if not more. No way an AdMech guy specialized in sharp shooting would still have his flesh oculars.

Nice kitbash. I dig the combat knife. Unusally down to earth for AdMech stuff.
>>
>>50834536
Valid point, but my collection is extremely small and the only bionic eyes I have are the ones from Ranger heads... which I can't really extract and mount, considering I don't have a saw or any sculpting tools.
>>
>>50835249
Go on ebay and get a razar saw, some cheap plastic sculpting tools from China and some kneadatite Greenstuff.

If you have a a plastic rod of some kind you can just drill a hole in the appropriate size into the head and glue the rod in.
If you feel inclined you can also work a little GS around the side of head as mount and add a tiny ball of flattened gs as lense to the front.

Another possibility would be to use some of the visors that come with normal tacticals (If the new box has them), I figure if you have the head you probably have the rest of the box too, right? Just cut the front part off and stick it to the guys, face. You can probably use the backside of the thing too.
If you happen to have some IG the binoculars that come with the Heavy Weapons Teams also make good conversion fodder for this.

>>50835553
If you really want to get into sculpting you can get a great wax sculpting tool set off of amazon. Those should work fine.

What size of model are we talking here?

Obviously if you make a living this way you shouldn't undercharge.
Don't be afraid to ask for what your work is worth.

If you are kinda doing this as a favor to somebody else you should probably price it slightly differently than you would do for 'just business'.

To be honest, I probably spent as much money on the commission as I would on acquiring the tools, paints, and supplies necessary, coupled with this guy doing it in a few days, 8 hours a day, rather than my agonizing over it forever.

Point is, props to those of you who can paint, and those of you who are good enough to charge. I wish I was half as good and had the time and money to burn practicing

It's a one off for a store owner who was referred to me by a friend, so i'm not in the mood for discounts. I'm doing this in between other freelance work, but I also want to get something for my time.

The usual rate I read online is something like 8-10 USD per basic model, with more for commanders, but i'm not a professional commision taker. Was hoping to find personal experiences from you guys because i'm sure at least one of you has done this before.

The yellow looks a bit weird and out of place, and neither the green or yellow you've chosen go very well with the silver. Some Mantic Games Striders in working on as part of my Nurgle renegade guardsmen - I was originally going to go for a more traditional green colour scheme but I decided to have a go at a dirty white last minute. Not him but instant mold/oyumaru warps with heat, so any form of heated casting process (even exothermic reactions) will cause a faulty cast. I always use milliput or greenstuff casting with them. It's ideal for press moulds and I've made armour panels, Tau armour plates and small models like necron scarabs with them but anything more than that has had iffy results at best.

That I did manage to cast a good pair of Stealthsuit legs with a two-part oyumaru mold. Good luck.

I think MSRP on this set is $33. I can't find it for substantially less than this, even though it only comes with three marines, one brush, and tiny post of paints.

I will say this: those three marines in there are absolutely stunning. I've seen them in person, and they strike me as just about the closest thing to "truescale" marines that Citadel has ever produced. I'd love to get my hands on them, but considering they're just squadboyz, not at $10 each.

>>50838999
>Well, what exactly would be good value for a beginner who wants to try it out and not having much dosh?

You have ~$33 to spend on this? Calling it a good value is indeed a stretch. You might be able to get away with buying some halfway-decent brushes, a can of rattlecan spray primer, a few bottles of good paint (Citadel, Vallejo, P3, etc.) and some really cheap models (starter box plastics can be had for a song on eBay) and come out about the same.

Then you wouldn't feel bad about ruining those totally sweet Space Marines on your first sortie.

OK my Imperial Knight is arriving on Wednesday. It's going to be House Malinax, so how do I make it more unique? I was thinking about giving it mandibles as a "Jaw" on the helmet, and obviously some scorpion designs on the armour.
Armour is going to be Zandri Dust - layer Zameesi Desert - Highlight Tau Light Ochre - wash Nuln Oil or Agrax, which should be close enough to the Malinax scheme, if a bit brighter.

Convenient thing about forge worlds is that the individual Magi have their own variant schemes, so this is a bit off the "official" Xana colours in pic related (mostly because I don;t have an airbrush).
>>
>>50838957
its okay. good for someone just starting out, same with the AoS version. The models are great, but the paints are totally fucking garbage. Since they're really small, they're hard as dicks to get open with the pop cap, and half of them end up dried since they've had them sitting around for who knows how long.
>>
>>50839071
For 28€ you can buy a full starter set of Vallejo or Army Painter paint (bigger pots, more pots) (each for around 20€) and then use the remaining 8€ to get 5+ Dark Vengeance Marines.

Calm down, guy. What I mean is that the shoulder pads get in the way in such a way I was thinking it belonged to the wrong model.

I mean, there's that little ball and hole that generally fit together, and they barely touch.

One solution I though of was using a different pack, like this one.

You need colours that complement each other, and a focal point for the model. Here neither the green nor the yellow go with each other or the silver, and they highlight the knees and part of the gun.

Silver is tricky to work with as a primary colour for the model, it doesn't go with much other than black. If you want yellow/green highlights on detail in dark Eldar then the bulk of the model could be something like a dark purple, which would look colourful and rich, but not gaudy.

I wanted to 3d print a large ogryn to carry a spare punisher Gatling cannon. I was floating the idea to then pose 3 bullgryn with slab sheilds around him as a count as leman Russ punisher. The big guy name was simply a bane reference as I am likely to take the model that is broken and try and make a bane count as for Nork Deddog.

You could use this big ol dude from the Pathfinder box, he fits into the top of Devilfish/Hammerhead body, or you could cut the parts needed to fit onto the turret.

Also probably set a smaller drone top into the pilot's bubble on the front end of it, that'd be neat?

OK, my Imperial Knight is arriving on Wednesday. It's going to be House Malinax, so how do I make it more unique? I was thinking about giving it mandibles as a "Jaw" on the helmet, and obviously some scorpion designs on the armour.
Armour is going to be Zandri Dust - layer Zameesi Desert - Highlight Tau Light Ochre - wash Nuln Oil or Agrax, which should be close enough to the Malinax scheme, if a bit brighter than pic related.

Also, when building Knights, I presume you leave the armour off and paint the plates and the skeleton separate. Do you also do the same with the weapon arms and carapace gun, or do you do them along with the skeleton and back plate respectively?

Suggestions for cool basing is also welcome, I have the GW large base detail kit since it fits with the boards at the local GW where I play. I thought I'd do a sort of "Scrubland City" with cracked parched ground and some roads and such, plus some cork rock outcrops for my Knight to stand on.
>>
>>50841096
Also if you end up cutting the bottom off, and do it right below the gun swivel, the round part on the bottom has ammo packs, emp grenades, and possibly Ion Rifle/Railgun power packs on it. They would make a nice ammo refill objective marker, or supply cache on a Devilfish.
>>
>>50840616
how is it even a question?

Have you considered perhaps the ruins of some sort of religious edifice? If you bought the Renegade set to get your Knights, it comes with a Sanctum Imperialis that you could cannibalize.

looks like you're using a matte black (nuln oil?) wash that's muddying things up and staining the yellow. Ideally, for yellow armor, you want to be using a gloss Agrax Earthshade or Fleshshade wash.
Gloss washes flow better, don't stain, and you can always matte it back down later.

as for the marble effect i'm not sure. when i compare it to a small marble plate which i bought at a salvage store it looks almost the same, but i want it to look like heavily veined marble wich i cannot do somehow. i'm not yet ready to try this a third time, maybe this can be used as a base for more veines/detail but i have a land raider to build so fuck it for now.

This.
You always have people going over the agreed amount of money.
It was said around $15 so if you kept that in mind for your gift there is no reason at all to feel bad. Nobody should expect to get a huge/expensive gift here, thats just not the point.

Thinking of ways I can make custom DS8 turrets as I have the old Fire Warriors. Had an idea of using these small bottle caps. The bottom fits snuggly onto a 25mm troop base and I chop off the top, put a flat base on top and then mount a mocked-up missile pod. Ass a fire caste symbol, maybe an armour plate and voila.

Secret Santa has been really interesting this year.

The gifts have been between like $150-$2

I only saw one that made me feel sorry for the opener (who I offered to actually send a $15 GW voucher to as I was so mad but never emailed me)

The thing I am most looking forward to once 3D printing becoming a thing is terrain. Giant gothic buildings and shit with total plausible deniability for legal bullshit so long as retards keep aquilas off them on the files.

I cant wait to have proper cityfights with huge buildings, mass produced sandbag lines, roads and shit. I'm so hyped for that.

Because red is a bitch in general. Red on white is better than red on black, but if you want an easier time, you should do red on brown or red on dark red. The brown and dark red will also go over white or black a lot easier, so the final red will be easier than going straight over white. Or just spray red next time. Red primer isn't hard to find, Army Painter or otherwise.

>need to sculpt his Sword Brother cape myself with green stuff

This custom model thing is much more difficult than I imagined.
>>
How do you go about giant conversions? I've decided I want to make a pimped out Baneblade for my Archmagos, but obviously it needs a lot of work. I was planning on mounting half a Haemotrope Reactor flat on the rear hull, and adding a couple control consoles. Do you just offer them up, trim offending parts and greenstuff it in?

Also I was considering having his base fit into the dais for him, but that looks way too difficult.

I keep having cool ideas, then attempting to make them work and realising I lack some components and can't buy them, or none of the parts line up at all, or I got the size off and it just won't work, and never starting any of them.

Also, lenses. I saw some very nice Iron Warriors a while ago with lenses that were apparently basecoat white, glaze Bloodletter and then a dot of white in the middle. Would that work on bigger things, like Knight eyes?
>>
>>50846180

You lack discipline, grasshopper. Your eBay-fu will never grow at this rate.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammer-40k-Space-Marines-Assault-Marine-Eviscerator-w-Shield-Bits-/282294855543?hash=item41ba15a777:g:hmYAAOSwXeJYHTj6

The FW ones are all sold out at the moment, but they aren't that uncommon. They're called heavy chainswords, not eviscerators, that's how you find them on eBay.
>>
>>50842115
This is beautiful
>>
>>50846261
You see, I saw that one. Problem is that I'd pay 7€ for just those 4 bits and another 14€ shipping to Germany. At that point I'd almost be better off just buying a pack of Assault Marines and using one of their Eviscerators.
>>
>>50846287

Bits buying is expensive, there's no way around it. But it's still cheaper than buying the entire kit. Although with the kit you do get extra parts. You're not going to get something like an Eviscerator or Grav-gun for less than $10 or so because they're one per kit and in high demand. Your choices are basically a) do without the part, b) save a few bucks and buy the bit on eBay, and c) buy the whole kit but at least have lots of parts leftover.
>>
>>50846333
>>50846287
>>50846261
>>50846180
Why can't you just lengthen a normal chainsword by attaching a second blade on top? If you want to make it thicker, split it in half and sandwich a strip of plasticard in between.
>>
>>50846388

You could, it's just more work and looks weird if you do it wrong. Some people don't have green stuff either and this is a job that requires it.
>>
>>50845252
Im from the first wave and dont have it yet. Feels bad, but i know for a fact my SS mailed it to me, so its a mail problem.
>>
>>50846333
I'm fine spending 5-10€ on a rare bit, did so on my Transuranic Arquebuses as well. My issue is that the only seller is US-based and that the shipping cost is twice the cost of the bit.
>>
>>50846545

I know of a German FW bit seller on eBay, but I don't know if he'll have what you want. His items are listed in German though so they're hard to find unless you speak German and know the proper German terms for the items.
>>
>>50846602
world-of-bitz is usually my go-to seller, stocks a huge variety of things, including FW and a few dozen different chainswords, but sadly not a single Eviscerator.

At this point I'll probably just go with either a fancy relic blade or a Vanguard Veteran/Space Wolves chainsword with decorations. Thinking about it, a chainsword, even if a relic, doesn't seem appropriate for a newly appointed Chapter Master with no special affection to chain weaponry anyway.
>>
>>50846173
Holy shit that's fucking glorious.
>>
There's no problem mashing the Forgeworld resin parts with normall GW plastic parts, is there?
>>
>>50846819

GW parts are slightly bigger but it will fit and doesn't look too strange. The Deathwatch stuff is a lot larger than both FW and regular GW parts.

My army is all FW and GW mixed and it looks fine. Putting things like plastic arms, guns, backpacks, and running assault marine legs on FW stuff works fine. Things like plastic Sternguard shoulders and Power Fists can be slightly large on FW stuff but Sternguard in general are massive.
>>
>>50846819
Remember what you mixed, because apparently some stuff melts in certain stripping solutions.

if you're painting the rim of your base and dont have blu tack handy, or dont want to lie the model down, you can keep the edge raised off the table easily by putting a spare base under it.

>>
>>50846881

Satin is between matte and gloss. Since you said it looks shiny it might be a bit shinier than standard satin, but it won't be as bad as gloss. Satin doesn't have as much tooth to hold the paint as matte and flat primers, but it's not as bad as glossy.

I think you should be okay, just don't scratch at the paint and seal it off when you're done with varnish.

>>50846919

Rubbing alcohol is the fastest method that's relatively safe. For completely safe methods use a floor cleaner like Simple Green, Pine Sol, Purple Power, etc or Fairy Power Spray if you're in the UK. Those take a while though and need to soak for days and scrub hard with a brush.

There are faster methods like oven cleaners, industrial degreasers, brake fluid, etc but they are hazardous and can damage your models.

There are various companies that make cybernetics for 28mm models. I can think of Anvil Industries and Puppetswar off the top of my head.

The best and cheapest option, that is more or less undisputed but lesser known, is Methylated Spirits. Also known as Denatured Alcohol. It will strip and shine metals and make a joke out of paints on plastic. And what's best, it won't eat plastic.

So is there anyone who can give me some advice for painting my skitarii? Particularly the chest. I'm looking and the guns are gonna make it hella awkward. Has anyone done it who can give me some advice?
>>
>>50848917
leave the guns off and glue them in later.
Same as with Marines or eldar guardians or IG or any other miniatures holding a gun across their chest.
Sub-assemblies are the way to go.
>>
>>50848957

Well it's a bit late for that I'm afraid, though I'll keep that in mind for the future. So what do I do? Am I just boned?
>>
>>50848957
>>50848917
The alternative method is to realize you don't really need to paint what no-one can see. Get a basecoat and a wash in there and it wont matter whether the highlights are perfect behind the gun. This is particularly true for standard troops. Save the sub assemblies for character models and other things people are likely to pick up and scrutinize.
>>
>>50848995
>Am I just boned?
Kind of. At least if you were planning on painting any fine detail on there.
Doing a basecoat and a wash should still be possible, but I'd paint the chest before moving on to the gun to avoid mistakes.
>>
>>50849008

Right well at least it was only a few of my troops.
>>
>>50849002
That's all well and good.
The point is that multi part plastic kits, unlike metals who are cast in one piece, do have a little space between their chest and their weapons. Depending on the pose you'll be able to see the backside of the gun, but not be able to get in there with a brushhandle.

Sub-assemblies are pretty much always a good idea.
Can even save you a lot of time.
Say you prime the legs of your skitarii with metal and spray paint the torsos red. Can't do that when you glued it all together.
>>
>>50845962
Unlucky anon.

I sent my SS over to the US, Royal Mail saying they're having troubles with the mail this time of year so idk how long it'll take
>>
so for my lord of change I've stuck him onto a rod so that he is off the ground as his pose looks like he is gliding, whats a good way to hide the rod?
>>
>>50849038
>you'll be able to see the backside of the gun, but not be able to get in there with a brushhandle
Never been my experience. Again if it's so tight that you can barely get a brush in there then all you need is a basecoat and wash. Anything that's covered up wouldn't naturally be highlighted anyway.
>>
>>50845897

Hah, I wish.

For my non-Sisters in not-fetish gear, I went for a shiny black leater look by using black ink and an extended drying time to get that nice shine.

For your armour though, I think it will look fine once the boob-skulls, shoulder, pommel, and cloth are done. You could probably take the white highlights down a shade though.
>>
>>50850356
>Why doesn't anyone use Tamiya paint?
Tamiya is good quality, but aimed at another market.
The primers are great but a waste of money if you intend to paint 200 models with them.
You can totally use your stuff, but most people go for what's easily available. In most cases that is GW paint cause the FLGS carries it.

Waterbased acrylics are also easy to use and you can't really do anything wrong with them. Worst thing you can do is paint badly.
If you try to market something that needs paint thinners and the like to 12 year olds you'll likely get a less enthusiastic response.
