Bolt Action: Empire in Flames
20th of June in military history:
451 – Battle of Chalons: Flavius Aetius' battles Attila the Hun. After the battle, which was inconclusive, Attila retreats, causing the Romans to interpret it as a victory.
1620 – The Battle of Höchst in the Thirty Years' War.
1631 – The Sack of Baltimore: The Irish village of Baltimore is attacked by Algerian pirates.
1685 – Monmouth Rebellion: James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth declares himself King of England at Bridgwater.
1862 – Barbu Catargiu, the Prime Minister of Romania, is assassinated.
1900 – Boxer Rebellion: The Imperial Chinese Army begins a 55-day siege of the Legation Quarter in Beijing, China.
1940 – World War II: Italy begins an unsuccessful invasion of France.
1941 – The United States Army Air Corps is deprecated to being the American training and logistics section of what is known until 1947 as the United States Army Air Forces.
1944 – World War II: The Battle of the Philippine Sea concludes with a decisive U.S. naval victory. The lopsided naval air battle is also known as the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot".
1944 – Continuation War: The Soviet Union demands an unconditional surrender from Finland during the beginning of partially successful Vyborg–Petrozavodsk Offensive. The Finnish government refuses.
1963 – The so-called "red telephone" link is established between the Soviet Union and the United States following the Cuban Missile Crisis.
1979 – ABC News correspondent Bill Stewart is shot dead by a Nicaraguan soldier under the regime of Anastasio Somoza Debayle. The murder is caught on tape and sparks an international outcry against the regime.
It is 1,565 years since the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains (or Fields), also called the Battle of Châlons or the Battle of Maurica. It was fought between a coalition led by the Roman general Flavius Aetius and the Visigothic king Theodoric I, against the Huns and their vassals commanded by their king Attila. It was one of the last major military operations of the Western Roman Empire, although Germanic federates composed the majority of the coalition army. The battle was strategically inconclusive: the Romans stopped the Huns' attempt to establish vassals in Roman Gaul, and installed Merovech as king of the Franks. However, the Huns successfully looted and pillaged much of Gaul and crippled the military capacity of the Romans and Visigoths.
In the years preceding 450, Roman control over Gaul and its other outlying provinces had grown weak. That year, Honoria, the sister of Emperor Valentinian III, offered her hand in marriage to Attila with the promise that she would deliver half the Western Roman Empire as her dowry. Long a thorn in her brother's side, Honoria had earlier been married to Senator Herculanus in an effort to minimize her scheming.
Accepting Honoria's offer, Attila demanded that Valentinian deliver her to him. This was promptly refused and Attila began preparing for war. His planning was also encouraged by the Vandal king Gaiseric who wished to wage war on the Visigoths. Marching across the Rhine in early 451, Attila was joined by the Gepids and Ostrogoths. Through the first parts of the campaign, Attila's men sacked town after town including Strasbourg, Metz, Cologne, Amiens, and Reims. As they approached Aurelianum (Orleans), the city's inhabitants closed the gates forcing Attila to lay siege. In northern Italy, Magister militum Flavius Aetius began mustering forces to resist Attila's advance.

You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!
Currently, you were standing side by side with Portland, San Francisco, and Enterprise in the Tarawa's well deck. It was God knows what time in the morning, but it was pitch black outside, with only the soft illumination of the stars and moon barely highlighting the clouds and waves.
Naturally, due to the warmtime regulations, Tarawa and her escorts were running full blackout procedures, reducing external lighting and keeping electronic sensors and communications to a minimum. It was still uncertain if the Abyssals could detect, much less intercept or understand human communications or signals, but nobody was taking any chances.
Plus Argentina would start asking questions on why an American fleet was hanging around so close to its coast.
(cont)
>>47948500
"Are you ready, Hoel?" Portland puts a hand on your shoulder. You see that even in the dim lighting, her Rig, like yours, had been painted completely black, with extra cosmetic protrusions attached to make it resemble Abyssal design. Even her clothes were different, with her normal sailor uniform replaced with a simple form fitting black bodysuit. Hell, she had even removed her trademark glasses and undid her ponytail, making her look like an almost completely different person.
Meanwhile, you were pretty much the same. Your Rig was painted black and slightly modified to change its outline, and you were also wearing a black bodysuit. You didn't look EXACTLY like an Abyssal, but these measures, combined with the darkness of the night, would be enough to fool the regular human eye.
"Yeah, of course I am, Sweet Pea!" You nod, though you could feel your hands trembling slightly.
"If you don't feel comfortable about shooting at human targets, I understand." Portland leans in closer so nobody else could hear her. "I'll cover for you if that's the case."
>Yeah, I'm not too keen on fighting humans.

Is there a good mechanical reason to use a melee weapon in Cypher, except for a "nonmagical unarmed character"?
>Point-Blank Range: If a character uses a ranged weapon against a target within immediate range, the attack is modified by one step in the attacker’s favor.
Ranged weapons are more accurate than melee within 10 feet.
>As a part of another action, a character can adjust his position. This is considered an immediate distance, and a character can move this far as part of another action.
>As an action, a character can make a short move. In this case, he is doing nothing but moving up to about 50 feet (15 m). A character can try to make a long move—up to 100 feet (30 m) or so—in one round.
>This is a Speed task with a difficulty of 4.
>A character can also try to make a short move and take another (relatively simple) physical action, like make an attack. This is a Speed task with a difficulty of 4
Melee characters have poor mobility unless they take a special ability.
The "modern" and "sci-fi" equipment are extremely ranged-slanted. In "fantasy":
>Inexpensive: 12 arrows, 12 bolts, burlap sack, candle, rusty and worn knife
>Expensive: battleaxe, cutlass, quarterstaff, sword (all medium); bow, light crossbow (both medium with 100-foot range and no reload)
>Very expensive: Greatsword (heavy), heavy crossbow (heavy with 100-foot range and hidden reload time in page 26)
>Exorbitant: Elven chain (medium armor, encumbers as no armor)
In "fantasy," warriors, explorers, and combat-flavor (free) speakers and adepts can all start with Practiced in Armor and free elven chain.
Between a battleaxe/cutlass/sword and shield (rules for shields are back in Numenera/the Strange), a greatsword, and a bow, the bow is still the best because of range and point-blank accuracy.
Most decent warrior or combat-flavor abilities for melee have ranged counterparts, like Bash and Fury vs. Thrust and Deadly Aim. Mighty Blow works for ranged too. Remember, in Cypher, Speed > Might.
Cypher is simply unpopular, so it seems?
>>47947611
If you use your speed for attacks, you won't have speed left for defending against attacks.
If you focus all your edge and pools on speed, you won't have the might to take hits, resist physical effects like super-science poison and gravities, or even swimming in some futuristic ocean.
Have you ever heard of trade-off?
>>47948204
This logic is flimsy and fallacious.
For one, a character who has Armor 2+ (e.g. elven chain in a fantasy setting) will want to spend Speed Effort to defend only against enemies with devastating attacks. Spending Effort can help mitigate damage, but it is effectively automatic damage to oneself. If an enemy would deal 4 base damage - 2 elven chain = 2 damage to you, then spending 2 Speed points with Speed Edge 1 is foolish.
For two, Might-using characters are no better off against "super-science poison and gravities," because their Might Edge is cancelled out by the fact that they have to spend from their Might pool if they want to have good accuracy and/or damage from their attacks. Considering that Might is the pool that is whittled down by the vast majority of opponents, and that a pool dropping down to 0 results in a debuff, it is imperative to conserve Might.
Investing in Speed is generally better all around (though Intellect is even better on its own). Even if you *do* intend on focusing on melee for whatever reason, the ideal way to go about it is to be a warrior with stealth flavor, take Extra Edge, Practiced in Armor (elven chain), Thrust, and Fleet of Foot, wield a heavy weapon, and then move across the battlefield with relative ease while making Speed-based attacks with Thrust (Might cost goes down to 0 and Speed cost has a -1 discount).

It's time for confessional /tg/.When I DM, I steal all my NPCs from Precure anime and reskin them as rugged old men.
>>47944684When I GM, I usually have the players encounter a cutesy trap that will help them along the way with downtime stuff like healing, preparing potions, scrolls et cetera. It depends. I've had a house rule staves can be treated as a quarter staff, so they offer that utility. Wands can also be concealed. Orbs aren't particularly concealable, and don't make sense to use as an actual weapon.

Okay, guys, I need some help.
As you might remember, there'll be a campaign at the FLGS, with teams of heroes trying to fight their way out of the realm of Shysh.
For this reason, every participant makes up a number of custom heroes; either 6 regular heroes, 4 mounted/flying/ogre-sized heroes or 1 monster hero.
>cont.
As a special rule, all heroes can use their Command Abilities, but only one Command Ability can be used per turn between them all.
In addition, all heroes gain the Command Ability 'Second Wind', which restores d3 wounds lost earlier in battle.
As you see, I plan on using Stormcast.

Bumpa-lumpa.
This is the official Imperial First Contact protocol.
I spent two hours arguing with my sister over if Degenesis is racist. I think it's just the fact that the game portrays races a bit oddly, and that racism is just a fact of the game worlds highly divergent races. Her opinion was that the game desingers were just plain racist and that's why they portray a few races in a poor light.
What do you think /tg/? And Degenesis General I guess.
>>47868203
There is no racism in degenesis
Racism exists in the game in the tribalism sense.
The world is butt-fucked so mankind has gone back to what it has done for optimum survival for tens of thousands of years: congregate with those most like themselves.
Inclusion and tolerance in the "everyone gets along and is treated equally regardless of color, culture, etc" is something that has only been widespread for maybe what? 60 years? 60 years out of the 80,000 that homo sapiens have been running around. It seems perfectly logical that when you have a complete breakdown of civilization and all of its trappings that we fall back on what worked before globalization, electricity, and mass communication/transit became things.
Does anyone have the Degenesis Rebirth PDFs? I've wanted to take a look at it but I can't really find anything about it.
Why do so many people here in /tg/ don't like skirmish wargames?
Is it because the really low model count? Is it because you don't think they're strategic? Is it because you like Warhammer/40K too much?
Not trying to bait or get a 40k hate thread or anything, just really asking for your honest opinions.
I myself have played a LOT of wargames, from WHF, 40K, Flames of War, Field of Glory, Infinity and Warmahordes to SoBaH, LOTR SBG, Battle Companies, Mordheim, etc. And I find that whenever someone starts a thread about skirmish-level games, there are some people who love them and some people who really hate them.
What I personally feel is that sometimes it doesn't feel that much strategic, mainly because most skirmish games don't really offer good scenarios and instead the game turns into a big mess in the middle where there are no tactics involved but throwing the fucking dice. The truth is, this doesn't have to happen, and there are many games out there that avoid it completely.
>>47907192
And also, following on this question or topic, what do you feel is the IDEAL number of miniatures AND units in a game?
For example, Warhammer 6th edition usually had around 80-120 minis per army, but around 8 units (talking about 1500-2000 points). Nowadays it has around the same number of minis, but MUCH less units, sometimes I see people with 4-5 units in 2000 points games.
And also, how do you like your minis organized in your games? I suppose it has a lot to do with the 'genre' of the game, if it's a skirmish game based around scenarios or a big battles game, but do you like having your minis organized in units or acting alone?
Bumping with some images of skirmish wargames
When you're playing low unit count games you're often relying a lot on not getting fucked over by the dice and losing a unit you really needed 5 mins in.
It's like how bows were in the lotr skirmish games(the older rules anyway I haven't played in a long time). Fucking useless in the hands of most races but once every hundred games those goblin archers would accidentally kill Aragon on turn 2 and make the other player fling his models off the table.
The other problem is terrain, skirmish games tend to rely on the idea there will be things on the table to get in the way of LOS that you need to negotiate but the average player isn't going to just have mountains of stuff at the right height for it. You're often just going to be flinging down whatever trash you have to hand most of which will either be 5 times the size of the models or a 5th of the size. If you want good terrain you either spend ages building it or shell out for the stupidly expensive premade stuff on the market.
