Storythread: like the Immortals, when one dies another takes its place. Doesn't seem like a fortnight since the last one, does it? Probably because the last thread was up for 11 days, which must be some kind of record on /tg/

If you have /tg/ related stories to post, post them here, and hopefully some kind anon will give you feedback (or at least acknowledge that someone did actually read it, which let's face it is what writefags really want).

If you don't have a story ready then I and other anons will be posting pictures throughout the thread for you to test your writing skills on. This is, more or less, a world-building and character-building exercise: two vital skills for playing roleplaying games. If you don't have any pics to post, you could try posting an idea for a setting or a character, and maybe someone will be willing to write a story using it. It's also an exercise in writing though, where writefags can try out their material and gain inspiration, so if you just want to talk about world-building save it for the world-building threads.

Remember that writefags love to have feedback on their work. Writing takes a long time, especially stories that go over several posts, and it can be really depressing when no one even seems to read it (and the writer won't know you read it unless you leave a comment).

And since writing takes a long time remember to keep the thread bumped. Pics are good, feedback is better.

last week's thread can still be found in the catalogue here if you have any comments or anything about the stories there

Welcome everyone, new and old players alike! This is Tundra civ, a civ thread series in a fictional, non-fantasy setting where you play as the rulers of the White Republic, a nation in a world similar to our own.

Our technology is now comparable to Earth in the early-mid 1990s. Most recently, we focused on scientific advancement and our space program, hosted the first new Grand Tournament in Victory City and dealt with terrorists from the recently annexed Pajashian Archipelago.
As per the decisions in the last turn we had yesterday, the government has commisioned software experts to design programs for military and educational purposes, in the form of simulators and the trendy new "Video games"
It is the year 1230 After the Exile now - three decades have passed since the end of the war against the Spirelords.

There was a good discussion after I left in the last thread. I'm mostly done with the conceptual design of the upcoming fantasy civ(races, gods and starting lore).
The first choices the players would have to make will be
>Race
>Era
>Starting location

There'll be at least 10 playable races.
4 eras to choose from. For the humans, the first era would be roughly copper age tribes and early civilizations, while the 4th would be a high medieval level. Starting from the 1st era will give you less starting knowledge, but you'll have more options in how you shape your civilization in the future and much of the world will still be unsettled.

Looking forward to it, a single question though, how strong and common will magic be?

I need to remember that. But on that note I'm trying to come up with traps or puzzles that would exist in an abandoned cave. One I have is room with a lake taking up most of the space with a path that goes from one side to the other and thins out the farther you go. PCs will have to make a DEX check or they fall in and may get tangled up in some kind of plant. Failing their check to get loose they get more wound up in the plant and start to sink.

I'm looking for a few more suggestions though of natural hazards, nothing man made

I read an interesting idea about how to handle party death - if someone in the party dies, new characters join the party at a significantly reduced level - let's say a level 5 party loses two guys; they then would gain two fresh level 2 recruits.

Obviously, this wouldn't work with a certain kind of player - for some people, the progression is the most important thing, gaining levels and wealth is the whole reason they're playing. It also would require careful design on the part of the GM, making sure that things were still challenging enough for the high-level player without being immediately lethal to the lower level one.

That being said, I really would like to try this - I would love the party being two veteran survivors of the Archlich's wrath (level ten) recruiting and leading the best young recruits they could find from the local town and caravans (level four) because nobody else was fool enough to join them in their quest.

Does anybody have any experience with asymmetric parties? What was it like?

Does it sound like the kind of thing that would fly at your table? If not, how would you make it do so?

Also, pictures of characters with lopsided power, because why not?

The issue with that is you soon run into 'Well, I'm low level so I'm more likely to die...which will make me even MORE low level'.

It's an unfortunate death spiral. Or the higher level characters stomping over the problem without the lower level ones being able to contribute.

I think it works better in systems that don't have explicit levels. I play in Cortex mainly, which is a level-less rules light system, and I feel like it would fit right in there. It's also story based, so there's a lot to be said for something like pic related. Three veteran heist men, but their safecracker died last year - so they have to bring his kid on board, who learned everything he knew.

There's a great amount of story potential there.

>The issue with that is you soon run into 'Well, I'm low level so I'm more likely to die...which will make me even MORE low level'.

I hadn't considered that - I suppose there would have to be a standard lower level. Let's say half the level of the highest level member, rounded down. That way, you lose your level four guy, you get another one, and are still in the same ballpark compared to the level eights.

>Or the higher level characters stomping over the problem without the lower level ones being able to contribute.

That part, though, I think is fallacious, because contribution means different things. Let's say those level ten players have their four level four companions - suddenly, they've gone from equals on the battlefield, to sergeants and commanders leading and training their soldiers.

I like that mechanic - I like it a lot. I like imagining the Bard and the Cleric, who weren't in the front line, surviving the Lich's blast to run away, and serving as epic support to four new frontline fighters to try and save their old comrades.

I love the close range shooty army.

For me they fight mostly inside cities. Protecting holy sites, relics, civilians.

Why civilian protecting in 40k? Well because everyone is part of the Emperor's plan. Some fight his wars, others tend his crops, while other build his armies weapons. Civilians need to protected for their part in the war of survival is not fighting, but enabling others to do the good fight.

I've met maybe 3 GM's so far that have checked off more than 2 of these things and never half as well.

Hey fa/tg/uys...I need your help to save one of the best DnD games I've ever played from being destroyed. Wall of text incoming, but I'll have a tl;dr nutshell at the bottom.

It's an Oriental Adventures game that's played over Roll20. I know that sounds like it's asking for trouble, but the DM is actually very good. He has a fantastic story planned out that looks like it will span over the course of quite a few years (we've been playing for 2 already) and I would like to emphasize how much I appreciate this game. I've had very bad experiences with just horrible and cringey DMs. From DMs that had characters get gangraped as plot points that are required for the story, to campaigns that were just random encounter after random encounter with literally no story...I've had my share of shitty games. We all have, I'm sure. But very rarely in my 7 years of playing DnD have I found a truly remarkable, greatly enjoyable game. This game means alot to me, to actually play DnD and have fun...to have a wonderful setting and story....to be able to affect the story...encounters that weren't bullshit yet were fair challenge...actual sensible realism (or as realistic as a magical world gets)...having fun roleplaying...and having a DM that just wants people to have fun. I have craved a good game for many years and finally found one for me. But now...my campaign is in danger because of That Guy. Or..."Those Guys," I suppose.

Let me preface something. The original group from the first chapter of the game is no longer there. (cont.)

>>
By the way, some of Those Guys do use /tg/ and if they find this post; I'M GLAD. Hopefully people's responses will show you that you're being the problem players that you are. Also I forgot to mention, it's 3.5e.

There are only two people left of the original group (including me), and me and the remaining original player were assigned co-DM because the DM trusts us and has played with us for a long time and says we're good players, which is flattering, I suppose. Our main job is basically to lead the group into the plothook or side encounters or to prepare a session for the players when the DM cannot attend, and to sometimes give the DM suggestions on how to implement things. I had to leave to group for some time because of college life becoming intensive. I was out for about 5 months or so. The other co-DM had to go on a hiatus as well, something to do with him being in the military. When we finally returned...well we returned to something much different than what we left from. We were the only players of the original group still there (They all had varying reasons for taking their leave) and they were replaced over the course of some months. Here I will give you insight to the kind of players they are, and for the sake of argument and to protect identities we will change some names. We will call Main-DM Chris and the other co-DM Daniel.

The first is Oscar. He is playing a skill-monkey that is optimized to ridiculous levels (average diplomacy rolls of about 60+...party level 7-8) but that's not the major issue. He is a tad argumentative and dislikes some of the DMs houserules and while he is clearly irked by them, half the time he does submit. However, the other half of the time he argues with the DMs. Either way, not too bad so far.

(cont.)
>>
Then there's Sam. Sam is a horribly habitual powergamer. Not only was his first character a broken-as-hell artificer that was literally invincible, wore armor that gave him fly at will and gave more AC than full-plate, charged for 100+ damage, had at-will fireball as a 12th level Wizard (or so, didn't get the exact numbers on that because he wouldn't let me see his character sheet at first), and created a wand that had infinite charges and gave the target ANY fighter bonus feat REGARDLESS OF PREREQEUISITES for 90 minutes, but he was caught cheating TWICE. He was asked to retire the character because it's too powerful and he was caught cheating. He was asked to make a nonoptimized character. So he proceeds to make a 7th level summoner-type character that can summon 4 levels higher than himself, summon 4 of everything he can (when 1 of the things he summoned could solo bosses), and any attacks dealt by anything he summons can deal an additional 5d6 sonic damage per hit. This summoner is also permanently invisible and immune to True Seeing and all forms of detection, including sense life, INCLUDING CONNECTION TO A FUCKING PLANE. All-in-all, his second character was even more powerful.

I should also mention, Oscar and Sam are friends that are working together to ruin the campaign setting. Fluff-wise, their characters are "totally not American" colonists that are trying to turn "not-Asia" into a profitable endeavor. They are trying to get them to drop their, and I quote, "Barbaric culture" and strip the land of all resources and anything they can make a profit with, ravage the land, and gain the support of the people that live there anyway by instilling a mass-media that they control. I see what they're trying to do there and I find it clever, but there's little reason why these characters shouldn't be BBEGs. They also have a much higher level of technology than the setting has, having among other things STEAM-POWERED TANKS AND BOMBING ZEPPELINS. (cont.)
>>
I know you aren't finished yet, but I'm a little confused as to why your DM is allowing these things to happen. Literally all he has to do is tell these players "no, you can't use that build/item/zepplin/whatever" or kick them out if they have a problem with it. There are plenty of players out there who would happily take those spots, I'm sure.

Shinobi Quest #19

This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.

(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

On the end of your second day after leaving Yugakure, you’ve finally made it back to Konoha, and you couldn’t be happier. This mission was fraught with danger, both before the mission even started, and after it had ended. In the days since the incident with the robed man, you’ve really begun to realize how dangerous this world can be.

“Everyone, well done!” you hear Itachi announce upon reaching the front gate of the village. “We’ve completed our mission without incident! There were definitely some unexpected circumstances, but as Shinobi we must be prepared for these twists and snags wherever they appear.”

“Yes!” Guy shouts in agreement. “As long as the fires of your youth burn brightly, you can overcome any adversity! As long as you work hard and believe in yourself!”

You don’t find yourself particularly moved by the praise.

Everyone sort mills about at the entrance for a while, before Itachi and Guy announce that they’ll be leaving to follow up with the Fourth. Everyone else acknowledges this, and wishes them luck.

>However, the importance of Warhammer 40K goes beyond its more obvious characteristics as a dystopic version of Lord of the Rings set in outer space. One also needs to consider the appeal that Warhammer 40K has with regards to its overall aesthetics, its values and the worldview that it represents. Warhammer takes the values usually associated with science fiction (e.g. technological progress, material progress, social progress, interstellar cooperation, and interspecies sex) and inverts them in the most painful and ridiculous ways possible. My purpose here is to analyze this inversion as well as the overall appeal of the entire franchise.

Alright OP, you better post the entire thing here, 'cause I'm certainly giving this guy no clics.

That said, 40k has nothing in common with LotR.
But yeah, it was a political and historical satire alongside an inversion of space opera.
The initial creative team had more than a couple doctorates between them, and it shows, even it the setting wasn't made too seriously.
In the very first place, Rogue Trader was made to sell the existing range of citadel miniatures.

I now us it for maps.

I make or upload a map for a setting I am going to use then load roll20 on a tablet for my players.

Works better than spending like 10 bucks for full color map copies that my players can crumple or stain, along with allowing them to make notes and I add location and be able to see them.

Tabletop Simulator's physics cause it to sperg out if you try using it for any sort of RPG. It's pretty exclusive to shit like card and board games.
