Talk shit about my field:

I study how the brain processes visual information experimentally and computationally.

How many animals do you kill a week

Last month, i was watching an anime series about time travel (Steins Gate), and then i learned the term 'Kerr black hole'. upon further research, i read that these are theoretical singularities without an event horizon. i don't matter if these are suitable for time travel, but this 'naked singularities' can be real? the relativitity allow these to exist? i want to hear your oppinions about this matter.

No they don't exist, no relativity does not allow them to exist.

Sounds like a good meme though.

/agdg/ here. Basically im new to maths and am trying to figure out how to crop x y coordinate input values inside a circle value. So basically what mathematical wizardry do I need to calculate the length of y and x?

Does relativistic mass create a gravitational attraction?

If yes, then could an object move fast enough to have a mass high enough to become a black hole?

If yes, when the object decelerates would we be able to conclusively measure the speed of the propagation of gravity?

If no, why not?

>Does relativistic mass create a gravitational attraction?

No. This is part of why the "relativistic mass" concept is no longer taught, as it was confusing and led to questions like this.

I have a CS major and stats minor. I've been actively been looking for data science and data analyst jobs. Most of them are only for Masters degrees in Data Science. So I'd suggest that you get a masters or cross your fingers. I don't think that math alone would help you any. Also learn R, and SAS

What do people think of geologists?
I am thinking of switching out of engineering into geology for my college major and even though it will not change whether or not I switch, I was wondering what /sci/ and people in general think of geologists and about a person when they say they are a geologist or geo-scientist?

They call geology "rocks for jocks" for a reason
>>
>>7764328
if you like it, then go for it

i started studying geology years ago, but in my country geology is focused solely on mining and making big bucks for the likes of bhp billiton, and so. you do make big moneys there, though.

where i am now, geology is more field trips, rock looking and geology as you know it

if youre worried about the image you give as a geologist, then youre an idiot, do something because you like it, not because its well perceived

If I were to fly a RC helicopter or quadcopter inside a car while we were driving, would it go to the back of the car, or fly with the cars movement?

If you fly a RC helicopter on a planet that is spinning, does it get left behind or does it spin with the Earth?
>>
>>7764290
It would move to the back. If, however, it were lighter than air and moves towards low pressure zones (like a balloon), it would actually move forward. When you car accelerates, the air in the car moves towards the rear because it resists changes in motion, like all matter.

why can't we all just get along?

So, I was just reading a book about evolution, and I had a thought about why we aren't immortal. A person who is immortal won't have changing DNA. Every time he has a child, he will essentially be a relic of the past that is constantly tearing down any evolution that has happened since his birth. He will be stopping the evolution of the species on an order of magnitude parallel to how long he ends up living compared to his mortal peers. It is in the best interest of any species to forbid immortality. The only exception I can think of that wouldn't damage the species is a person who never has children after he reaches the average age of death of his species.

I want to study the shit out of reinstating a child-like learning capacity in adults. What do I need to read up on? I'll even take advice on career/degree path or whatever, but mainly I'm looking for reading material: I just want to learn how to learn how to learn more efficiently.

Pretty much every neuroscience undergrad I talk to has had this stupid idea.

If you increase the plasticity of the brain, aren't you just as likely to forget things as you are to learn new things? What's the point of being able to learn a new language more easily if it's at the cost of forgetting how to drive a car, or other potentially important skills that would not be exercised as much while under the theoretical treatment's effects?

Brain scans of compulsive video gamers have shown that their brains are wired differently. They had stronger connectivity/coordination between the following brain regions:

Auditory cortex (hearing) -- motor cortex (movement)
Auditory cortex (hearing) -- supplementary motor cortices (movement)
Auditory cortex (hearing) -- anterior cingulate (salience network)
Frontal eye field (vision) -- anterior cingulate (salience network)
Frontal eye field (vision) -- anterior insula (salience network)
Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex -- temporoparietal junction

The salience network helps focus attention.
>Hyperconnectivity between these brain networks could lead to a more robust ability to direct attention toward targets, and to recognize novel information in the environment. The changes could essentially help someone to think more efficiently.
However the strong coordination between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and temporoparietal junction seen in gaming addicts is also seen in schizos, Down's syndromers, autists, and people with low impulse control. This particular attribute may cause increased distractibility.

There is literally nothing wrong with studying theoretical physics. All engineers here are just pseudo-intellects who boast about their "god tier" subjects and shun physics.

Who cares? You graduate with your dissertation. You will probably get your shit together faster and be able to publish your research first.
