Why are humans so much smarter than animals? Shouldn't there be an intermediate form between super smart humans and stupid as fuck animals? Did a hominid like this exist except humans killed them all?

They still exist

Idk. Granted they're dumb but they're still closer to human intelligence than they are to something in between humans and animals.

I am going through Lang's Basic Mathematics. Reading from cover to cover, while he first part seems easy enough, the exercises are a bit difficult.

I shall explain, I know for a fact the rules by heart. So I have no problems performing the exercises that involve numbers. When it comes to "proving", I am quite stunned. Even though I "know" the rules, writing proof of it is another art (or so it seems).

I was never taught this at school, are there any recommendations on how to start proving things? I realize this must be a stupid question, the book itself is by far the best mathematics book I have read. I just want to get into true mathematics more.

I apologize if this was a noob question. Thank you in advance.

learn proof by induction.

ex: 1+2+...+n = n(n+1)/2

proof: case n = 1 , left side says 1, right side says 1(1+1)/2 = 2/2 = 1 , so the base case is true.

fix a natural number k, assume the proposition is true for k, then we show it's true for k+1:

1+2+...+k+(k+1) = k(k+1)/2 + (k+1)
= [k(k+1)+2(k+1)]/2 = (k+1)(k+2)/2
so the prop. is true for k+1.

Therefore by the principle of induction, the proposition is true for any natural number n (1,2,3....) .

QED

proofs by induction are a good way to practice basic proofs. Another common way is proof by contradiction (ex: show that there is no rational number r that satisfies r^2 =2)

There is only one way to get better at proving and that is doing it yourself.

It is something every person studying mathematics has to learn and the intuition you gain from it will be what makes you good at maths.

For starting out I would suggest doing very easy things like proving something like >>8229060 or some field or set properties.

.... Dude, the majority of rocket fuel in this picture is solid propellant, right?

Liquid fuel is much heavier, right?

Look how big a 4 million gallon tank is. Its fucking BIG. And if you drive a car that gets 30 mpg, you'd use muvch more than 4 million gallons to go 126,000,000 miles.

This is kinda my basis for my argument

The logical conclusion is we should all drive spaceships to save the planet and truly go green.

How much of consciousness is reliant on sensory input?

If you were to remove a person's brain from their body, and adequately supply it with everything it needs to continue functioning, such as oxygen, nutrients, and hormones, what is consciousness like for that person?

Is there anything left to be considered conscious? If so, is it just an existence of thought? What does that even mean?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
You are by definition not conscious if you are not perceiving anything.
>>
>>8228925

What would keep you from perceiving your own thoughts? What would keep you from thinking?

If you're right, would having *less* sensory input make you less conscious? For instance, was Helen Keller less conscious than another person who was blind only?
>>
>>8228931
I think you are just misusing the word "concious". You are not conscious when you are deep asleep.

It's been ~2-3 days since Copenhagen Suborbitals launched Nexo 1, so I was wondering: could it be possible for a couple of ordinary high schoolers to build and assemble a working bi-propellant liquid fueled rocket engine? Or would it be too costly/illegal/too difficult to pull it off?

It's safe to say that the current state of VR is underwhelming to most people. Would a VR headset that generates a new instance of reality in the brain ever be possible? Would it ever be possible that it would be able to trick the brain into thinking it is doing/experiencing something it is not? Here's a little idea of how I envision it:

>be on bed in house in reality
>put on the headset
>loads a new sandbox inside your head, completely disconnecting from your physical body
>choose standard bedroom preset for the sandbox
>import kim kardashian 3d model
>extend own dick by 5 inches in settings
>have sex with kim kardashian
>can feel everything
>feels like i actually blow my load in kim kardashian
>turn off the headset
>back to normal life

Would such a thing ever be possible? Obviously it wouldn't be just for sex, although it would revolutionize the sex industry, you could also fly around like a bird and all that shit. What subjects would one undertake if they were heavily invested in the idea of this? Biology, neuroscience, electrical engineering? I have seen recent developments in prosthetic arms where they are able to manipulate nerves to give sensory feedback to patients. This could be a starting point right?

I think it's a possibility but neither necessary nor desirable.

We've known how to immerse ourselves in games long before pseudo-3D graphics became a thing. All we've done ever since are incremental improvements in the presentation.

Why is VR underwhelming? Because it's too expensive, the content is lacking in quality and diversity and people quickly get used to it.

With each new gadget, we think it will make us happier, but that's a misunderstanding of how the human mind works. We were already just as happy with Final Fantasy 6 on the SNES as we will ever be with Oculus Rift.

The only thing that would actually make us happier is an innovation that targets how the brain processes pleasure and pain, and systematically improves the pleasure while reducing the pain. But such an invention would be universally condemned and banned by the parasites.

>>8228310
>I think it's a possibility but neither necessary nor desirable
>not desirable
Am I making my idea clear enough? It is a headset that literally stimulates a new reality in your head. You can be whoever you want to be, girl, boy, alien, superhero. You can do whatever you want to do with the full physical experience as if you were doing it for real: sky diving, sex, flying etc. And when you're done you can unplug. It'll be like the Matrix. It would be a cash cow. I see it as very desirable.

>We've known how to immerse ourselves in games long before pseudo-3D graphics became a thing
Yes but there's immersion and then there's 'immersion'. Don't imagine holding a controller with a VR headset, imagine actually being inside the game. That's what I'm envisioning.
>>
>>8228316
>You can be whoever you want to be, girl, boy, alien, superhero.
We've had that for millennia, it's called basic storytelling and imagination.

>Don't imagine holding a controller with a VR headset, imagine actually being inside the game.
It's irrelevant. You're confusing authenticity with utility.

The point of entertainment is to have a good time, but we're all on a hedonic treadmill. The enjoyment of a 12-year-old playing The Witcher 3 is not higher than that of a 12-year-old playing Zelda 3: A Link to the Past, they're just used to better graphics.

Having "presence" in Kim Kardashian's ass doesn't make you feel more pleasure, only hedonic enhancement would make you actually experience more utility. That is, the only innovation to actually make you feel better would be to target your pleasure and pain processing in your brain and improve it in a sustainable fashion. Which of course, would cause an outcry and bans more so that violent video games do.

I'll show him anything you post. He says that animals were bigger because the Earth's rotation was slower, and that lowered gravity and somehow allowed animals to grow very large. I cant find very much on centrifugal force affected gravity greatly. This also means that the rotation of the earth would have sped up to the 21 hours it was 600 mya and then slow down again, right? I know that when earth got its moon was one time that it's rotation changed and can't find another time it did.

Multiple choice, what do you guys think?

>Humans eat until they can't wipe their own asses.
>Humans rape, murder, seeks for other humans attention by posting pics of their faces and bodies online.

a) because they are smart animals, and have free will.
b) they are just stupid animals, don't have free will and don't know what's good for them.
c) that is exactly what they want, and are just behaving that way

>>
>>8228100
We're machines, by eating more than is needed, we are preparing for famine. That famine doesn't come because we're in a perpetual state of surplus. (In the first world, at least)

People rape because they want sex/they get off on the pain/control of rape
People kill either because they get off on killing or because they gain something from it. (money, women, in rare cases confidence or attention)
They seek attention online because they want compliments/money/encouragement/discouragement
