This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Please do not shitpost, and please report any shit posters attempting to derail discussion or cause strife. This means avoiding tripfag drama or discussion about subjects such as getting rid of /qst/.

How do you guys like your battle systems in the quests you play? Do you like them to be more number and roll based, or for it to be more about using logic and making the right decisions?

What quest do you think did a battle system the best?
>>
Is there any website archiving /qst/ like 4plebs does for /tg/? Thanks.
>>
>QM Question
As someone who doesn't read civilizations, civ-quests, whatever you want to call them, or whatever special distinctions you want to separate them in, I'm not sure how they run.

If I were to run such a thing, I'd have an MC be a champion of the civilization, rather than a commander/king/chair warmer.
I'd give players a number of champion actions and city-based actions each turn. I read that civs are harder to run than actual Quests, so I probably wouldn't run one anyway.

Still, introspective thinking never hurts, and hey, maybe one day I will get into the subgenre.

I have it in good word that you westerners really put importance on the outward apperances of your media consumption, so how edgy and "mature" and "intellectual" am I make a quest to attract you people, this, "give it the time of day"?

Just do it good. That's it. Write well, and people will like it.

Or just go full stupid and get a horde of shitposters for an audience. At least you'll get the attention you want.

For fake maturity and fake intellectualism just crib from anime and manga, you'll get all the best westerner posters faster than you can type two full character limit posts.

But there's a better question I have for ya. Would you have fun writing that sort of quest?

Because if you have to ask about what to add for views rather than what you feel best writing you're already spending your time making it harder to have fun QMing.

Just do it, you won't get better by not writing. Also try to read good stuff and think about what they do right, why certain passages evoke emotions. Best thing to do is having someone who knows his stuff go over what you write, but short of that, just reading and writing is also a good way to improve.

If there's specific things you have trouble with (like action or dialogue) try searching for advice, there are some decent guides. Art can help, but is not really required.

One thing I would recommend is thinking of (or stealing) a solid dice system before you begin. It makes your job much easier.

Oh, and another bit of beginner's advice is to avoid complex character creation. If you give anon's to much power it's very to end up with a character you don't want to write, so put your foot down from the start, offer archetypes or just think of the MC by yourself.

>>QM Questions:
>How would you improve civilization quests?

To improve we must understand the problem. Back when /qst/ was just born, there wasn't a lack of civs or cultural evos or risk threads. Most did relatively fine from what I remember. Now I see quests that last one post and they are dead. What happened from the beginning to the now?

I'm guessing the QM was in over their head but that may be over simplifying it. Since there seems to be a lack of quality civ threads the problem could also stem from new QMs looking at civ threads and believing that they could take it up and create something better but without the guidance of a good quality core of civ threads the overall quality has died. There is a definite lack of active civ thread QMs.

From this I blame the summer fags. They were probably the bulk of /qst/'s civ threads and other threads of the sort's QMs and players. Though this is just speculation it is odd that since summer has left us so too has civ threads.

>>Player Question:
>What is your favorite civilization quest?

Saurn118's Quests.

>>773720

>>
>>773720
No.

It was a horrible decision.
>>
>>773546
no but seriously how should I do this, should I create my own character and force them to be a tank/assassin/mage/whatever, or should I let them do some basic chargen (race/gender, class and hometown would be all I did)
>>
>>773861
Never do character generation.
>>
>>773868
but forcing them to be something seems like the worse option in a quest based on a vidya.
>>
>>773720
Less pace, more like the final resignation of being put into an old folk's home
>>
>>773720
I'm never at peace with anything. No matter the situation, there is always room for betterment.
>>
>>773873
I'm with this anon >>773868, even with a vidya quest if you want an original MC than it's best to make it ahead of time. You could make a few options for characters and let them choose between them though. But the details should either be decided beforehand or during the quest to match how anons see the character.
>>
>>773873
3-5 options that you've already agreed upon wanting to QM.

Too many options is bad. That's what is killing civs.
>>

I'm almost ready to start a new long running quest (I don't ever keep the same trip), but I'm drowning in self doubt

Been a fan of Star Wars since childhood, and I'm about to run a quest with an MC living during the early (Palpatine) empire that doesn't have anything to do with the force (himself that is, not a force sensitive), and isn't a bounty hunter - and I really feel like that loses 99% of the crowd that would be attracted to a SW quest

Hmph

Honestly I've had enough of Lone Wolf Star Wars stories. If someone did a Quest where you were in a military (any military) in Star Wars that focuses on your forces than that sounds amazing.

Instead of becoming the next Boba Fett, make enough/be influential enough that you can hire Boba Fett on a mission.

Trying not to spoil too much at the moment, plus I don't want to pin myself down to a storyline incase I have a last minute change of heart on where I want to run with it, but you have the right idea that it isn't going to be a "ur a jedi/sith harry" or a "Boba2.0" quest, but I'm also not a big fan of starting in a powerful position, so don't expect star wars civ like you're describing in the end part of your post.

Prettty much this. Most QM that try to do civs don't have a clear vision of what they want to actually do, and there is an civ community hanging around the main problem would be QMs ditching their civs. The more originality/creativity from the QM the better the chance that the civ will continue running. You can't really run a civ without preparing for it and that applies the same to regular quests(altough there are certain QMs that can make up things on rhe spot, most need to prepare for it)

Another week? Modern Necromancy Quest was pretty good so far, I think, and it started last monday.

>>775741
Not good, but not too terrible either. Due to the reduced traffic and lack of /tg/ culling, new quests have a harder time attracting readers. And readers have a hard time getting into quests, because they visit the catalog and see a mess.

That said, there are some positives. More QMs are making better use of their catalog space and listing their quests in the general, though many still fail on both accounts. 'Shilling' in this general has become more accepted, as it is a solid method of attracting people to a new quest. So it ain't all bad.

To save 4chan maintenance costs Hiro is now trying to disable 3rd party archives.
First attempt to deploy this feature was rolled back because it messed up loading images.

How would you go about revealing that one of the characters is only real in the MC's head?
>>

>>

I was thinking of having three way conversations where the imaginary participant would speak but only the MC would ever respond to what they said.

You should also drop hints along the way. Like having the imaginary character survive things that would kill anyone else.
The first Black Ops game did that really well with Reznov.
>>

I was also thinking they should appear at strange and inappropriate times, when you wouldn't expect to see a person but for them it'd seem completely normal.

And that people would treat the MC as an outsider, but avoid the subject. Until you meet someone completely tactless.

>>
>>777971

>>
>>776897
Very carefully. Once players suspect such a thing (or after it is revealed), they'll carefully scrutinize all your posts, which means that small innocent mistakes can derail things.

>>777653
I see I'm sorta beating a dead horse at this point, but still: individual quests don't really thrive on community as much as they thrive on writers and an audience interested in the subject material.

Sure, there are people who will check out of a quest just because it's a quest, similar to anime fans who watch at least the first episode of all the anime that comes out every season. But I think most people are pickier than that. So spreading out quests would be anathema to many quests, like nondescript one-shots or 'what do?' quests, but it could also help draw in readers for more demographic focused quests.

At least, that's the theory. These days 4chan is so segregated that I'm not sure how well it would work. The old Bromont Katawa Shoujo quests might not be appropriate for /a/ anymore, because Katawa Shoujo is a /v/ or /vg/ topic, despite being so anime inspired. If that historic strategy Zero no Tsukaima quest was on 4chan, would it be /a/, /his/, or something else/? Would 'what do?' draw quests be /i/ and /ic/ material? This isn't a matter of just having to check multiple places for quests, as people already have to do that (here, anonkun, other imageboards). It's a matter of other people inevitably complaining that certain quests should be on this or that board instead, which is what started the whole mess to begin with.

Ultimately the shuffling of quests has been a created problem. They were spread out, but it wasn't appropriate content (i.e. /a/ quests were not discussing actual anime or manga). So they all got moved to /tg/. But oh no, too many quests! So they got moved to /qst/, mostly segregating them from all but the folks who are already interested enough in the format (or just in particular quests) to follow. So yeah, splitting the board up would cost us the one thing that we've got left that (in my opinion) makes it worthwhile to run quests on 4chan: the community. But would it be a big loss, or does it just seem that way because it's what we have left?

Are there any mature quests for mature people such as myself? So many gritty apocalypse and zombie quests are badly handled crap, so are there any good writers handling mature-subject/theme quests yet? The Preacher and Lucifer shows were a good, mature way of handling the goofy comics, for instance, so how many of them writers here draw inspiration from those prime time or HBO/AMC shows?
>>
>>778278
Wasn't very well done and only covered a small portion of the quest.
>>
>>777653
But it worked before and that's how it came to be? Initially it was related subjects to their related boards, but that went with a hell of a lot more crossover and vagueness than there is now. /a/ quests worked on /a/, /v/ quests worked on /v/, and /tg/ quests worked there. Now, even still, /b/ "quests" work on /b/ (and /trash/ counts too I guess), but those aren't really long term things. Of course most of this is speaking prior to before /a/ & /v/ quests were forced to /tg/ which was some time after the quest exodus that resulted in tgchan, which is an imageboard of mostly drawquests and furry. There was also more recently the smut quest exodus, and the whole /d/ thing whose place in the timeline I can't recall.

But yeah, it worked as it was as far as audience is concerned. There were always shit quests, too, in the same sense that 90%+ of most media is not memorable and is so forgettable that nobody can recall them.

Communities are not actually for good company or fun times, they're for excluding unwanted and unnecessary crowds. The idea that anyone thinks "community" is an inclusive idea is fucking retarded, and delusional to any who hold it. Much in the same way laws are restrictions up to even the ones that specify rights, they're not kindly optimistic allowances or wishes, they are purposeful limits. It's just conceited people confusing the idea of how they want something to operate with the reality of how it works in practice. The difference for boards is meek, aggregation of content does not equate even a minor sense of neighborly community and that someone could even think so on 4chan of all places is a whole level of dumb that not even that faggot Plato could make a fallacy for.

How would players 'arrive' after seeing an intriguing quest, if the potentially intriguing quests are on a board they haven't visited? Unless you're talking about people who followed quests from /tg/, something I had mentioned in that post.

Okay, so I'm thinking that crossguard sabers are actually hastily made on the field of battle. If your crystal is put under extreme strain, it can shatter, causing it to become incredibly unstable. Most Jedi just switched to vibroblades or got new lightsabers but some added exhaust ports to the sabers to try and control the extra energy and then, this one Jedi decides to make a fighting style for it that he thinks can counter dueling sabers (pic related). It becomes a fad for a couple years but has mostly died out at this point because crystals are more available and the form is so radically different from all other forms which makes it a pain to learn and teach.

Oh, and crystals work now by changing their color to suit the user (they turn red because the darkside makes them bleed or something). I'm gonna take bits and pieces of this and use it.

No, the crystal thing is the new canon.

And for the crossguard saber, that's how they actually work. Shattered crystal and exhaust port. I'm just giving it a history since the movies never really did.

It's more like the other forms than the saber you posted.

Compare Kendo (standard saber) with German swordsmanship (crossguard saber), then compare it with the dueling saber (saber fencing). There's a lot of shared moves because the blades are similarly proportioned for the users, so there's commonality.

Fighting like Dooku is way different to either of the two.

Hmm, shit. Might have to rethink it a bit then. I can just say they aren't popular because they are unstable then and leave it at that. Plus, to make one, you'd have to crack your crystal which is kinda hard to do and super dangerous. Since I don't know a ton about swordsmanship, I'll leave that out of the conversation as much as I can.
>>

>red crystals
They're red because they're made in machines artificially, luke's second saber is a special snowflake in that regard

Color is dependent on the crystal used, there's no deep meaning behind them for the most part.
>>
>>778553
Nah, Disney retconned that shit. Now the saber "bleeds" if you're bad and turns red.

It actually kinda sucks, so I'm not really going to use that part. Red crystals are still artificially made in that regard.

And Disney also says the user changes the color now. I'm going to put it forward as "Well some people think that crystals gain their color based on the user but we don't really know."

That is maximum retarded.

At least the "red artificial crystal" made a kind of point about Sith vs Jedi. Sith see the lightsaber as just a weapon. They're fine with something made by a machine and it furthers the "withered flesh and life support system" theme they have going on. The Jedi are big on tradition and touchy feelly stuff so they like natural crystals. It also furthers the nature and diversity theme the Stars Wars good guys have.

Yeah, the bleeding crystal is max retarded especially since Anakin fucking murdered a bunch of kids and his crystal kinda just stayed blue. That fucking conflicts with the movies, Disney, you can't do that.

I'm cool with the crystals turning whatever color they are when the user finds them though. I liked it better before but it's not really a big deal and it does give more insight into the relationship between a Jedi and their weapon.

AzureEarth has a problem, he wants everyone, all his players, to have fun. What should he do? It just seems impossible to me, all the good quests have arguing and bickering and shitflinging and arguments, and that somehow turns into fun. How can you possibly have one where everyone is happy?
>>
>>779017
AzureEarth? The guy who killed a protags best friend because they critfailed a rap battle? The guy who responded to the MC's long term actions with with a plot relevant NPC who murdered the MC dead? The guy who ran one of his quests for forty eight hours straight across five threads and then went to work retail and then ran another session afterwards? The guy who, in a RPG mmo anime universe, trapped the players into believing the most consistent mechanic and character to the point the players basically chose to die? The guy who disagreed with one of his namefags so hard he shitposted at them as anon in between updates until said namefag dropped his quest?

That guy, AzureEarth?

>I think our definitions need ironing out anon.
It's the quests where the players get most involved, most immersed, that they take the most seriously. The obvious consequence of players giving a shit, is them giving a shit. Arguing and wars tend to go with that.
>>
>>779088
Geeze. I don't know where to begin.
I suppose then, at the start, eh?

.hack//AIDA was not his first quest, using a loose definition of quests, but it was the first of his that lasted as long as it did. You can find it here;
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=AzureEarth
It's of course based on .hack.

The second quest Hollow Butt Redux is after that, a Bleach fanfiction quest that operated initially as a reboot of the dead Hollow Quest of fame. It became something more later on, but I've already spoiled as much as is best to.

Now, first, AIDA. This is the "rpg mmo anime universe" stuff I was talking about. It's fairly consistent, and its characters have a certain certainty to their flavor, up to a point. What AE did was add depth, and unfortunately for many players depth and questing don't really mingle- and their choices got them regularly clotheslining themselves. This was actually something that was, in my opinion, the result of Azure carrying out proper consequences when players were a little bit presumptive of other characters. It happens more than once but he drops the quest to continue focusing on HQR more. And probably for the best, even if the majority weren't angry buttmad nerds.

Later, in HQR, this happens when the players misjudge a situation involving having a rap battle with a shinigami lieutenant. They wanted to have some fun, the shinigami killed their designated bro companion. That one, I think, is absolutely on the players. Some criticized that AE didn't read the mood of his players for wanting crazy, but then they voted to bring their friend along to stand up in front of a character who wants them dead and is several levels of anime fuck-you above them. To put the death of this particular character into greater context, a bro of the level that was the MC's plant hollow friend was almost as a husbando, and their death become a major motivating factor for the abilities and schemes conjured by the MC for the remainder of the quest.

Later on, this was also the quest he marathoned to the point where his writing went from smart use of commas to single word sentences and several dozens of dropped clauses.

>But yeah, he's having trouble with motivation because he wants everyone to be having fun.
Now this may come as a surprise, or perhaps not, but this is nothing new for AE. Gauging player focus and attention and what players really want and enjoy, in particular to these past quests and the sometimes extreme reactions his QMing has garnered, has terribly scarred his psyche. To the point where now he's not even a man, more like a creature that died QMing and can't really stop anymore but persists as the ghost of a little girl.

She is, as a QM and individual, damaged. Reading the more out-there posts of the archived HQR will show just how much its mind had slipped, and its made the rebounds since, but a broken writer once is a broken writer always.

Forever they'll quest- and consequences shall follow.
>>
>>779088
For the rest of the stuff I mentioned I recommend reading the archives, and especially all of anons posts. For a rainy day, it's worth it.

Hoo boy. Sometimes it's hard to tell in AE's quest when things are serious and when it's time to goof off, you know? Still, dicking around with someone that powerful ought to have a punishment.

>Now this may come as a surprise, or perhaps not, but this is nothing new for AE. Dark Greetings is only stupid hilarious rather than just stupid.

Though, the old EU has a lot of good moments I think which languish in obscurity. I loved the story of the Stormtrooper from Alderaan who made a necklace out of rocks from Alderaan. I had intended to steal that for another Star Wars Quest later.
>>
>>779336
As a starfighter fetishist, the old EU's greatest contribution in my eyes will always be the X-Wing and Rogue/Wraith Squadron books. Wes, Hobbie and Wedge just broing it up and having dogfights was the best, and I believe those series' also gave us the most electrifying man in space entertainment, if I remember correctly.

Though frankly, just about anything by Allston, Zahn and maybe even Stackpole were pretty great, and I am glad Zahn's getting another go around with the new Thrawn book.

You learn moonrunes and post stories that people get to play. It's not really questing, in that many border the difference between civs and skirmishes, but some few have done the deep end of many people voting on actions of singular protagonists. If it's intended as a one shot-ish quest, you could tighten up the themeing, tone and ending a lot more because players will have less time to derail stuff, which would make it easier to run. Because it's unrelentingly fun, well animated and directed and full of charismatic, memorably written/designed and well VA'd characters especially in the dub with a great soundtrack and sense of time and place that's rare in anime.

Then it takes a good plot/premise, elevates it with all those aforementioned elements and an intelligent, well constructed non-linear delivery to give us one of the best shows of its kind, anime or otherwise.

I'm actually kind of glad there isn't more, Baccano was an excellent self contained experience and while I wouldn't object to more of it, as long as it's from Studio Shuka with mostly the same staff I don't think it really needs any more. Better to just be happy with what we got than risk it getting Psycho-Pass Season 2'd.
>>
>>781337
>especially in the dub
I disagree. The original is better.
>>
>>781341
That's fair, maybe it's just because it's set in the US and the English dub replete with accents helps build that pulpy sense of place and time that I mentioned, but I felt the dub was a real standout in Baccano, except for maybe Jacuzzi's voice which gets a little grating. It's part of why the show's one of my recommendations for people just getting into anime.

Just gave it a cursory skim but the first things that stick out are a lack of paragraph breaks and some clumsy writing.

You should split up larger chunks of text into something a bit more palatable to read because 4chan doesn't have line spacing. Just add an extra par between new dialogue lines and the like.

As for the clunky writing, mainly you do far too much telling and not enough showing, and that combined with the brief, almost terse posts mean I'm not really getting any sense of immersion or being drawn into the world because I can barely envision that world from what your writing gives me. Sure I can lean a bit on my knowledge of the world from the XCOM games, but that only gets you so far. Now, this isn't necessarily a crippling flaw on /qst/ and it certainly helps with update speed and whatnot, but it is enough of a turnoff for me that I dropped the quest when I first encountered it. You've also got some issues with repetition of words within and between sentences, which I can sympathise with as it's hard to avoid especially when typing into a 4chan reply field, hell I've probably done it somewhere in this post. I recommend using something like Notepad++ to write your posts in first if you don't already, that'll make it much easier to see your work as a whole and edit it prior to posting.

That's the major stuff, otherwise I just felt like the quest was missing a hook, something that made it particularly interesting or engaging aside from its setting in XCOM. Then again, I've really just skimmed through it so it's possible I missed something important and you must be doing something right because you're getting a lot of posters and they seem pretty engaged.

Because the tone of his quest is wildly fucking inconsistent.

It's bullshit to skip from super serious death mode to fucking rap battle reference heavy shit. Be fucking consistent. Quests should have high points and low points and there's nothing wrong with comic relief or light scenes, but keep the two separated. They should also be in keeping with the tone of the quest. You can't jump from blood and gore to SoL glomping, but you can have dick jokes or friendly banter. Similarly, it's ridiculous to jump from playing lazer quest or dodgeball to killing people for real.

If people cannot tell the tone of any given scene, it is because your entire quest is lolrandum trash, or that you just suck at writing in general.
>>
>>781397
>punishing players

No QM or DM should ever play something to "punish players". Who plays games with the intent to punish the people playing along with them?
>>
>>781419
>your entire quest is lolrandum trash,
I thought that was AE's specialty. Unless I'm thinking of someone else.
>>
>>781419
Even I have to maintain a tone. Sure there are jokes here and there (some lewd) like the stuff you normally see in MSPFA but the focus lies on the adventure.
>>
>>781424
There is "punish" and there is "logical progression of events"
Most people confuse them. One is being fucked over by karma, the other is being fucked over because you are a fucking idiot
>>
Hey I know most of you guys aren't too keen on character gen in quests, but I think it can work fine if you embed it in the dialogue and tie some of the bigger choices together.

I've done char gen in every quest I've run (which is admittedly only like 3 and two one-shots) and it's worked out fine. The only problem I have with it is that the character is consistently male for some reason and I'd like to have a female MC once in a while to shake things up.

>>781431
Oh shit, I forgot to ask my question with that. What problems do you guys see with char gen?
>>
>>781433
It can make over half your potential playerbase leave if done wrong.

If you want a female MC just make the MC female at the start. Don't do gender votes.
>>
>>781433
Char gen hate is meme-tier at this point. I literally just wrapped up a slasher killer quest with char gen. It's fine.

>>781430
>fucked over because you are a fucking idiot

I think I would assume my players misunderstand the tone and direction I intend for the story before I'd assume they were drooling retards.

One assumption ends in communication and sorting out the problem. The other ends in hurt feelings.

Seriously guys. This is make believe with dice. The goal is to NOT end up where you feel you have to "show the players whose boss" and "that actions have consequences in MY story".

Don't become a Trick. Save yourself before its too late.
>>
>>781424
We're not on the same page, I didn't mean "punishment" as in "they fucked up my storyline imma get em"

I meant it as "punishment" i;e "you did a dumb thing here's the result"

Not wanting to start fights, I haven't ever followed AE's quests, just trying to play devil's advocate
>>
>>781436
>It can make over half your potential playerbase leave if done wrong.

I honestly really doubt this.

People who don't want FeMCs will not check out your quest if it has a FeMC.

People who don't want FeMCs will not follow your quest after they lose the gender vote.

These two sets of individuals are the same people and were never going to be your fanbase regardless of the decision deriving from the voters or the QM.

Your potential playerbase was never that large to begin with.
>>
>>781436
>>781433
Personally I've aways seen chargen as needing to be organic, if at all.

Have a basis for the character, and let the player base fill in some custimization based off of the story. First thread should always be sort of expository in that sense, let the players feel out how they want to play the personality you provided and write from there
>>
>>781433
have you tried a quest without char gen?

The biggest issue is that new QMs seem to take char gen as a matter of course rather than a conscious decision.
>>
>>781444
That's the problem with it I think, a lot of new QM's don't put enough structure behind a character, and then throw it out to be mangled
>>
>>781440
The gender vote was one example. We both know that the more chargen you do (Mage/Warrior/Rogue, Status in society, etc) the more *potential* there is for carving up your potential readers.

No I don't think it always happens, but it can.
>>
>>781451
Yeah.

In fact hold no votes whatsoever because you wouldn't want to turn off potential readers.

Fuck voting. Just write your quest with no player input.
>>
>>781452
I don't even know how to start unpacking this
>>
>>781457
Easy.

Bait fish or smug anime face. It's all you need, friend.
>>
>>781438
No, no.
I meant is as
Killing an NPC because you failed a rap battle is "punishment"

Being targeted by the mafia because you decided to kill the Don's son and not cover your tracks is "logical progression of events"
>>
>>781460
It sounds like the death of the NPC was a logical extrapolation of events. The players weren't expecting actual normal behavior. Lose a game with Shunsui, you die.
>>
>>781463
Then the situation was fucked to begin with
>>
Listen there are dozens of pros and cons to character generation, and more specifically, the extent of your character generation.

Each variability of control you give the players affects the feel, experience, attachment, relatibility, design, function of the quest world and a whole slew of other qualities.

There are millions of factors about participating in a quest that are undeniably altered by how much control the QM or the players have over the MC's existence, thoughts, personality, beliefs, gender, major goals in life, etc.

And not a single one of those issues truly has a damn to do with fanbase size.
>>
>>781471
I'm not sure that applies, but you can judge for yourself. This is the session where it occurred:
>In which rap battles are declined, /tg/ dice happen to our plant buddy, and a moron screams about thematic consistency in Bleach, of all things.

>>
>>781482
Oh, right. Elder lolae follower, does she not allow NPCs to do anything useful? Does Diplomacy never work in her quests?
>>
>>781444
The closest I've done to a quest without char gen is one where the players chose from a few pre-made characters I had made in a Samurai Jack one-shot I did.
>>
>>781484
There are instances where it does. I am, uh, kinda drawing a blank here. I'm sure there are but the easy times aren't as memorable as the twists and character deaths.

I feel like every time I try it always comes out heavily skewed towards the players and flawed

just like my quests

Aliens are invading and subjugating a magical world using adv. magitech that distorts space and time. They rally people to submission with their cadre of alien girl idols. And, this has all happened before as part of the world's soul rebirth cycle. Your idol must compete with the alien girls and the monstergirls for the loyalty of all trapped in the cycle, while attempting to link the solfire or rule from xXdarknessXx, or seek THAT secret.

Run the quest/s you want to run, but if you want a good response from anons, make it seem like you're as interested in making this thing as you want your players to be in playing it. Doesn't mean your pitches have to be paragraph long masterpieces, just give us a taste of the quest and your writing's flavour in addition to the bare facts of its premise.

>>
>>783545
If you want it to have a clear progression, lots of options, and keep backtracking to a minimum. Choose the upper left one. Let's call this one "Classic open world"

If you want the first area to be some sort of "tutorial" that the players don't go very often. Choose the upper right one. It is very similar to the previous one in terms of structure otherwise. I dub thee "Classic open world with starting area"

If you want your players to backtrack continuously (give them memoravle encounters, places and repeatable tasks), and you are okay with your MC moving very fast between points in the map. Choose the lower left one. I'll call it "The central hub"

If there is a reason for the players to move back and forth between the green point and the lowermost point, want to encourage them to get around roundblocks, and make the "dead ends" have worthwile things in them. Choose the last one. But, IMO it is the least appealing of them all. This one will be "The trade route"

This is all assuming that movement between the marked routes is unimpeded and free

Things I remember:

1.It involved Totemist. It even had the same OP pic with the kid talking to the spirit monster.

2. It had a character named Soma.

3. The player character was on the run because they did something they shouldn't have done.

4. There was some sort of meta-narrative where a man and dragon are playing chess and the player character is one of the pieces.

I don't know if you are still around, but maybe this can help you understand something i forgot to mention, the "scale" your map shapes suggest.

The "Classic open world" reminds me of old RPGs where you got to roam a whole world and the amount of abtraction made sense since you were supposed to see it all from an airship perspective. The thing looks like a vast world map, and the points would be capital cities. That would explain why everything is so well conected, they aren't paths, they are trade routes.

The one with the starting area suggests, at least to me, the shape of a continental island. The scale seems smaller, like the play area is just a single nation instead of the whole world. Now the points are major cities.

"The central hub" looks like an even smaller area, but it is actually bigger than the island. It just takes part in a small area of a bigger nation. The map is not as well connected as you think it is, that suggest that travel routes are limited by the geography of the place. The points now represent towns, cities, and settlements

Finally, "the trade route" looks like it is located in a very dangerous and inhospitable place where getting to a settlement fast is more important than making it to your destination. It lends itself very well to a wild west kind of setting with caravans. It might not be the smallest map, but it ceirtainly feels like it. The points are small towns and settlements that can provide only limited shelter and temporary rest.

Sorry for the shitty quality, but it should be enough to illustrate what i mean

Still here.

I haven't put as much attention to the scale as you did. I am graceful for your interpretation.

This isn't dark souls where the world has been degraded into naught, the days of glory is gone only a husk remain. However, I do want to give this sense of hostility to the players outside of the hub without gutting the horror element.

The hub is to be a place for comfort and serenity that is for certain most of the time . Another problem ; since i am aiming for eldritch/bestial/cosmic horror, I will be forced to urbanize the majority of the locations. Ironically this is the same thing i hated about bloodborne ; all city/structures of man, little wild landscapes. This will conflict with the sense of exploration since it works best with untamed landscapes....something unfamiliar to man unlike sound a city that we dwell it, we will know where the danger lurks unlike outside...it can be anywhere.

what lies inside the grey lines are within city walls.... which will drastically decrease the scale you were talking about. i would like to counter this somehow.

The obvious solution is to add more locations outside of the city but that means more effort and also the possibility of overwhelming the player (I always assume that there is one player. who is incompetent who needs to be spoonfed almost everything.)

i would like to hear your side of the argument. how to balance city/nature ratio? how to implement horror properly in non urban areas? and so on.
>>
>>783939

Maybe you can strike a compromise between claustrophobic city and wild landscapes? Have parts of the city be in extreme disrepair like Detroit. Maybe since you're doing a Lovecraft thing you could have parts of the city be ancient with the modern city built on top of it.

Have you ever read Robert E Howard's Red Nails? It's about dark sword and sorcery action in a claustrophobic, ancient city.
>>
>>783953
Lovecraftian horror tends to actually not mind whether it's taking place in an urbanised environment, for example Bloodborne did a really good job of making the city just a scary, unknown and tangibly 'wrong' as any of its exterior areas.
>>
>>783963
That's a good point. Lovecraft himself was big on urban decay. It was a big theme in the The Horror at Red Hook and The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
>>
>>783961
no, i haven't, it might be a good read. thank you for the recommendation.

i intend to implement some verticality to i have no idea how to map it properly.
>>783963
point taken. that doesn't cover the issue of exploration though. i mean would you rather explore a dark forest untouched by man or endless doors and corridors inside the gullet of a city? both have their merits though.
>>
>>783976
verticality in the city.
>>
>>783971
He was also pretty big on spooky rural areas too.
And rural America can get pretty fucking spooky. I should know, I live there.
>>
>>783953
Overgrown ruins are your friend here. Maybe some ruined districts. You could make parts of the cities overrun by whatever where the walls failed and have the remaining part of the city being protected by an improbized wall. To add to the bleakness.

If there is a place for your monsters to hide in the wilderness, there is fear. The fear of the wilderness is the oldest in the book. You'll have to give me a little more info if you want me to help you personalize it for your quest.

In this case the upper left one seems your best bet for more wild areas.

I can't undestand what is going on in your lower left one, why are the two cities so close (assuming the walls are not so big that they would put the Great Wall to shame) and not connected?

Why are the green starting areas outside the walls? Is the MC an outsider? A hermit?

What would these circles represent in your maps? Points of interest? If so, what kind? Stores, forest clearings, houses, people? Areas controlled by ceirtain groups, maybe?

Tell me more about the scale and size of your world map. Are these rural towns, small cities, Bizantium sized metropolis?

Sorry i got more questions than answers, since you added the walls many things changed in how i percieve your maps
>>
>That feelin when you want to run a "Don't get spooked!" oneshot Quest for Halloween, but realize Halloween is over.
>>
>>783990
everything is subjected to change, keep that in mind.

the starting area is not actually connected to the other areas physically. Just like the hunter's dream in bloodborne, it merely ....i don't want to say teleport , the better word is transport the MC to a designated spot.

I should mention that all of this is but a dream, a construct, a projection of a higher entity. Some unfortunate souls are trapped there while, some have been there for so long that they forgot it is but a dream, other chose to enter this place willingly to attempt to contact either this higher entity or the gods of above and below (you).

Another thing is might not be an equal representation in distance. so these two cities are not actually close.

The origin of the MC is up to the player as much as i hate to do that (or i can go to the preselected route) the only thing common is that he/she is an emissary with one task: to awaken the gods of above and below.

the points also differ in size and function, i still haven't set anything in stone just yet.

i suppose those are small but sprawling cities.

I don't know if you ever played Morrowind. To get to the point, there is a temple dedicated to one of the demon-gods of the setting. The thing about this temple is that it feels off in a subtle way.

If you were to measure every room in that temple, you would realize that there is not way that, the way the rooms connect, its shape could be recreated in the real wold. The size and placements of the rooms don't match in any way, like some M.C Escher kind of thing.

I'd advise you to do something similar, like cities that look pretty small from the outside, but take days to walk from one end to the other when you are inside.
Then wait until they realize that travelling outside of the walls is actually faster than going through the relative safety of the city.
Or that going throught the woods shortens a distance, that would take a whole week on a carriage, to a mere day.
Doors that work as normal, but if you were to use it to exit thorught them again they would connect to a different (but consistent) part of the city.
Things that are, ultimately, harmless but will put your players on edge

For your problem where you want more parts to be wilderness and not outright abandoned city, you could make zones being reclaimed by the the wild.
Zones so overgrown with vegetation that the only signs that it was once part of a settlement are the ruined walls on the horizon, the faint traces of cobblestone road under the grass, and the sparse ruined buildings that hide some treasure and plenty of danger.
Having the walls fall and nature take what is theirs could add to the oppressive atmosphere of your setting. Where people have to fight tooth and nail against the encroaching wild while looking with impotency at all they have lost from their shoddy fortifications.
Or something like that.

I still don't have much idea of the geography of the place, but from you inspirations i assume you are going to want forests and mountains.

I can't tell the distance between the cities. But the idea of "Yeah, we moved like 2 kilometers to the East and we still hear the screams of the damned" is intersting.

I assume that the reason they forsook the previous Oorlith was bad enough for the mto move nearer to a place named "Nightmare"

Also, the size of the wall is now smaller, if that's to scale it tells me they are lower in resources now.

The new city appears to be more religious. If these Above and Below things have religious significance, that is.

The old city looks like the right place if i want to kill stuff

You are going to want to remake that map in a way that it represents distances between points more accurately. Or at least, put a number on each line, being the time it takes to travel said road

Sometimes you have to be really overt with the fact that you're moving the plot on. Or if players are getting bogged down in social, put a limit on it - they can talk to 3 people and that's it for the scene.

If you really think your plot isn't doing anything, change what you have planned. Have something really sudden disrupt the chain of events. 'When stumped, have a man come through a door with a gun.'

Of course you can avoid that trap by having your plot fixed to a certain timeframe. If people get caught in complexities, have it move on without them.

Didn't speak to Don Corleone first? Too bad, since you didn't respond in time he assumed you'd betrayed him and now he's sent men to whack you.

>>
>>784312
Thanks man. Appreciate it.
>>
>>784299
The problem with that "timeframe approach" is that every time i've seen it implemented, and i mean every time, there is something off about the amount of time that each action requires.

You have a whole day of free interactions? You get to talk to 2 or 3 people. Tops.

You want to take some time to train, study your powers/abilities, experiment with something? You get one action, no retries, then plot happens. You might try again late night, if you want to start next day with a penalty for sleeping less

You want to visit many people in the same day? Same as before, only 2 to 3. And there is a single relevant person in a single place. No exceptions, even if it would make sense for two people to be in the same place. And if, IF you can talk to both, it will take the same amount of time that takes moving to two locations and finding these two people on separate places.

Why are MCs lives so hectic? Why is time so precious of a resource? And all of this happens even when there is no danger around.
So your Don Corleone example doesn't apply to my rant, but still.
>>
>>784319
>Why is time so precious of a resource?
Because otherwise a quest would be 200 threads of preparing for a gang war, and 5 threads of the war itself.
>>
>>784321
...Shadow Quest, man. 40 threads preparing for a war that lasts 2 threads across one session.
>>
>>784321
See? This is a situation where being time-constrained makes perfect sense.
There is a gangwar approaching, choose wiely who you want to interact with because most are preparing themselves and won't be willing to talk with you at all times.

What i mean is when there is not such even looming so close on the horizon. When the gang war is a posibility, not a ceirtainty.

When you are travelling the wastes in your post apoc caravan with your trusty friends A,B,and C. You chose to chat with A and C and, whoops, day's over. Also, B will bitch at you sometime later because you didn't talk to them that one time.

Look, i am not asking for the ability to talk to everyone and do everything in a single say. I want activities to consume an amount of time that makes sense.
Training karate and talking to Friend A about what happened here the other day (and getting little info in return, i might add) should both take one of your 4 "time points" for the day.
There is a middle ground to be found here. Between the current situation and "20k threads of talking, 1 of payoff"
>>
>>784333
I like how B is a bitch for not being spoken to, but A would've been the majorist ass if we hadn't, so we had to vote that way because A is the number two party member but B is just there for support.
>>
>>784338
Oh, that's alright. It is perfectly serviceable.
It is just icing on the time cake. Something that becomes a minor problem because of the time contrain.

>Oh, you want strawberries? No, you think you want strawberries! How would you feel if i dumped a metric ton of them on you? Eh? See? You didn't want any strawberries to begin with.
Gosh

You are Charles Terry Maine, owner and driver of the Steel Caterpillar, one of the finest desert trains this side of the glowing crater. You are moving between [Settlement A] and [Settlement B] transporting [Goods]. Your apprentice Pipsqueak is by your side, he has much to learn but you feel that he will become one fine cravaneer by the time you retire. Your friends Henry, the cook, and Mark, the shooter, are manning their posts. Routine stuff, really.
Well, except for one thing. Miss Gertrude is travelling with you to [Settlement B] and there she will get with how much she has paid you. You were about to write her off as a stuffy and boring rich woman, at least until you recieved confirmation from Mark that it was her who shot that giant Desert Salamander dead in the eyes. Maybe there is more to her than meets the eye? She is travelling all on her own, after all.

Your thoughts are interrupted by Pipsqueak. He says we are recieving a message throught the Morse Line from Henry, he wants to talk about our food and supply situation. Shortly after, another message, this one is from Mark. "Just come" it says, typical Mark. And finally, another one. With some difficulty due to the Morse Line not being at its best, Miss Gertrude also requires your presence. Talk about a busy day.

It is mid day by now, you have around six hours before nightfall. That's when the really nasty things come out, but the road looks safe and easy now, perfect for Pipsqueak to take over and practice. After you go over the basics once again and proceed to leave the driver's cabin, you notice something strange. You know this old piece of junk inside and out, and that is not a good noise. Not necessarily something critical, but chances are that it will require mechanical maintenance if you don't do some minor repairs right now, and that will be costly. And there is the matter of the Morse Line from the passenger's cabin. When was the last time you checked on the cargo anyway? Last time some giant mites got in God-knows-how and you lost some [Goods]. You don't think you'll have enough time to do all before you have to take the wheel again.

What do you do? (6 hours total)
>Check the noise in the engine (2-4 hours)
>Talk with Henry (30 minutes to 1 hour)
>Talk with Mark (30 minutes to 1 hour)
>Talk with Miss Gertrude (30 minutes to 1 hour)
>Check the cargo (30 minutes if ther is nothing unusual to 2 hours if you have to do some pest control)
>Check the Morse Line in the passenger's cabin (30 minutes if you ignore Miss Gertrude or you already talked with her) (1 hour if you chat with her while doing repairs)
After that, night will be combat or something
>>
>>784424

>There has been an awakening?
>Have you felt it?

Hey everyone. I don't know if you all remember me, or my Quest. Part of the reason I stopped running was due to time, confidence in myself, and /tg/ being flooded with quests. Well that last problem evaporated didn't it?

I'm curious if anyone is interested in taking part in a revival of sorts of the Quest. Bringing it back, right where it left off...two years ago.

I don't necessarily disagree, but it is something that needs to be done, because they can't really grind it like that. Well, I mean they do get better through combat, but not taking the time to improve and learn new tricks and abilities will lead to death. Which should come as no surprise.

sorry, i wasn't able to reply earlier.

these numbers are almost meaningless but they might give you an idea about the general progression and size/distance of these areas.

Obviously, i am not good with mapping but i believe visual cues ought to help the player (and myself). The question is, which direction should i take while making these maps?

http://imgur.com/a/uCdLq

The first image is the hub for our MC, Isolated from the rest of the dream, a peaceful location for respite.

The rest.....well, they are from my previous souls quest (i started one just minutes? after /qst/ was a thing. both it and the redux were a mess)

The Ashen sanctuary (hub) was desolate, you had to earn your right there by defeating two bosses, a brutal start to a desolate hostile place. Itwas supposed to be connected to various areas (Pilgrim's wood, Ioa's sea, Black Marshes and +2 places i could not recall at the moment).

This past is dead though, moving on, should i make maps like Dreams of Livendagen or something with colour like Ioa's sea or something raw like Ashen Sanctuary/pilgrim's woods?

Your maps look good, i think you should make maps in various styles

>Neatly arranged and illustrated maps for the "safe areas"
>A few like the Ioa's Sea for very supernatural areas
>Old timey sea charts for more "mundane" sea areas
>Chicken-scratch hastily made doodles for dangerous areas
>Achitectural plans for old buildings
Whatever fits the tone of the area. Make the maps In-Universe objects for better atmosphere.

Say, if you are okay giving me more references i could help you with map making.

Could use some help in identifying what exactly there is to do in the Star Wars Universe at large, I don't think I can really go well into treating planets as just simple villages to go through, since you could spend an entire lifetime on a planet and never learn all it's secrets much less a galaxy, what would be best you all think?
>>
>>785883
Inhospitable planets, with small dome colonies in them. Like 99.9999% of the planets ought to be.

Now you can have your planets as towns if you so desire.
>>
>>785883
>treating planets as just simple villages to go through
Could just be MC and friends go to the planet for a specific reason, no reason to have to tour the whole damn world when you're just here to do a job.
>>
>>785911
Cept I know that there are planets that aren't 100% true, sure you could get a lot of planets like that, but then you get weird ass aliens that are essentially able to live on the surface of Mercury because they have fuck off high endurance to heat or some bullshit space magic reason like that.

Like Tattooine for example, not to mention its really tempting to fuck about with the timeline some what be it revealing key data points to the big wigs in the galaxy or fucking off to go do your own thing, I just don't know what all there is in the sandbox really. I mean I didn't even know that the Hutt controlled whole sectors I just thought they lived on Tattoine since that was what the movie showed.

>>785922
Well so far the MC is stuck into a debt of 30,000 credits to pay at the end of the month else he is sold into civic slavery, so far he's been able to find a Trifighter wreck that might make a neat mint, but there are natives that are using it for campsite.

So 1) build a battle droid to kill them all, or 2) make/find and release poison gas to kill them all, or 3) hire a bounty hunter to gun them all down, or 4) buy a heavy blaster, set up on a hill, and blast them all
>>
>>785883
That's more or less what they are like. Single biome worlds with a mostly homogenous population and mindset (if its a homeworld) or a stratified population if a planet like Coroscant or Nar Shadda.

They can have as much or little to explore as you like.

Wilderness seems to be a thing in Star Wars. Cities lack suburbs. Its urban, rural or wild stretches.

They had a battle droid to command and they took the natives down non-lethally too.

Opinions on Critfails and Successes?

I'm generally extremely opposed to the base "Roll a single 1 or 20/100 on Three Dice Rolls" version that crops up often. There's a 14.2% chance of rolling a single 1 or a single 20 on a 3d20 roll. It's a less egregious chance on larger dice but it's still there.
>>
>>786216
Fucking love them, but only on d100s
Nothing more fun to write than when your players critfail and ruin everything in a horrible, explosive moment of intense agony
But d20s make it less special
>>
>>786238
It's a 2.2% chance on 3d100s FYI.
>>
>>786216
You're the boss so you decide what happens. A lot of systems have degrees of success, so you don't just have a pass go straight to a perfect with one more number.

What shouldn't happen ever is something impossible. For example, no, you can't rape the planet and get it pregnant no matter how high you roll.
>>
>>786216
I believe crit-fails should only apply based on what the performer is doing, how skilled they are, and how much outside stress is acting on them.

That's why I like the 3D10 system with "layered success"(despite myself not using the system for my current Quest); if the QM only has crit-fails assigned to triple ones, it's only a 1:1000 chance if I remember correctly.

You might be wondering why I have a trip on; it's because >>786063 is live!

So I have a question.

I am considering starting up a quest soon-ish.
I haven't really followed a quest since /qst/ started.
These "basic text formatting abilities" of bold, italic, red, green, and blue are new to me.
It occurred to me that if they had been regularly implemented in some quests, they might have developed some connotation or meaning in their use.
(Such as blue words being possible actions, green words being important character names, italics being used for dialog.)

It occurred to me to ask before starting: Do any such conventions exist here on /qst/, and if so, are there variations?

I realize I could just make up my own, but I find always better to explore established methods first, to save work and encourage an easy learning curve.
>>
>>786879
>Do any such conventions exist here on /qst/

Absolutely not.

If you do want to use them though, simply be clear and consistent in how you use them and everybody will understand what you're doing. Make sure you're using them for a reason, not just because "lol imma make my quest red."

Don't ever stop and explicitly explain what the colors mean. In fact, don't ever stop and explicitly explain anything about your quest. If it needs to be explained, you're either not using it in a clear manner or it's just dumb.
>>
>>786880

I just wanted to know, are there any particular board-tans you guys want to see play a major part in the quest? /qst/-tan is going to stay the main character, and his party members last time were /cm/, /out/, /vr/, and /pol/. Which board-tans would you like to see aid /qst/ on his adventure this time?

Expect the quest to start maybe next week or two.

>What is our class?
/qst/ is a generic swordfighter/hero with a few combat skills. He's a jack of all trades, being good at both tanking and attacking. Magic can be dangerous though.

>What is the party size?
We had a max of 5 party members at once last time. I don't think party size will matter too much.

>Can we switch out party members?
The way it worked last time was that /qst/ and a single party member went into battle with him, and the party member could be switched out mid-battle, but it cost a turn for /qst/ or the party member.

>Who is the bad guy
It's a secret also I haven't really thought of that yet. I made up most of the shit as I went along last time.

Another question to anyone who was in my quest last time, would you like to see the battle system changed? I know some people thought it got tedious towards the end. For those who weren't there last time, it played like a basic JRPG with /qst/ and his partner attacking first, then the enemy attacking second. Rolls were required for most attacks, which meant a lot of rolls.

funny, that. I've seen people who shill on twitter or discord without ever touching this general.

People pick 3 out of 5 all the time, just do at least 2.
>>
>>791056
The point is that the irony is in the fact that a person who takes pains on this site to announce their activity get ignored, while people who use off-site means seem to get participation.

Why should Anons have to use the catalog, recognize time-zones, or check in-thread timestamps to know when a QM is running, when they can just be spoonfed by social media?

So OP should state "hey, use some off-site method of advertising or else don't expect participants" instead of saying a Twitter/Discord/IRC/Reddit isn't mandatory.

I mean, a Twitter totally told us that Soma was going to pull the bullshit of having some fag run a quest just like Banished, then have a handful of Anons pretend to be retarded in some circle-jerk inside joke. Twitter also told us that Joker Quest is never going to finish, or that all the QMs who randomly drop off the map and have their Twitter/Discord/IRC removed are going to do just that.

Shit happens. No amount of connections on-site or off-site will change that. If a QM gets killed by a tornado or a stray bullet, we'll never know. There's no need for people to get all high and mighty about whether a quest has Twitter or not, because if it's going to disappear, it'll do so regardless.
>>
>>791138
>I mean, a Twitter totally told us that Soma was going to pull the bullshit of having some fag run a quest just like Banished, then have a handful of Anons pretend to be retarded in some circle-jerk inside joke.
Sounds interesting.

Could you link me to this quest?
>>
>>791138
>"hey, use some off-site method of advertising or else don't expect participants"

Maybe if you wrote better your quest would get participants without those things. Don't blame your own personal failure on the /qtg/ OP.
>>
>>791138
>high and mighty
I think you've lost me. I'm also not sure which bits you're saying are sarcastic and which aren't anymore.

I wasn't saying that it's better to shill offsite, and nobody said that there aren't tons of other reasons a quest could die. I just prefer twitter for announcements and announcements only, you bloggers since it suits schedule changes better.
>>
>>791138
If you don't care enough about your quest to explore every avenue for attracting new players, why bother running it in the first place?
>>
>>791185
Thank you for proving me right. That mindset is exactly why OP should update the information. Because not using off-site contact information invalidates every other form of effort.
>>
Personally, I prefer Twitter for receiving updates about quest threads.

Notifications in the general basically require me to be active checking for updates, something that's I'm only going to be doing while at my computer _and_ not occupied with something else. Discord is probably alright, but the android app doesn't work on my old cheap phone, and I don't think there are any third party apps. There are slim third party Twitter apps that do run on my phone, though, so with it I can get a notification while otherwise occupied (in the kitchen, or reading in bed, or whatever), and then clear some time to catch the thread.
>>
>>791138

I have a twitter and use IRC. Should I use IRC or do all the cool kids use Discord these days?
>>
>>791233
This.

A twitter is just an convenience in the end, you don't need one, but having one means you get the advantage of alerting a list of anons on their phones that you're running, whereas if you post in /qtg/ you better hope they didn't decide to not jump on the general that day

People have lives, and even when they're on the computer in the first place I bet they have better things to do than join in on qtg every minute
>>
>>791204
Because not using off-site contact information invalidates every other form of effort.
Except I never said that. It's just a matter of effort. Hell, I hardly ever check Teitter for quest updates. But if a QM cares enough about their quest, they should take the initiative and advertise in whatever way works best for them. I've seen QMs in the past who only announce via the general, and they do just fine. Using Twitter isn't an absolute necessity, just something that shows a QM cares.
>>
>>791273
Shit. I meant for that first bit to be in greentext, phone is a shit.
>>
>>791243
It depends if you already have an invested playerbase who regularly shows up in IRC. They probably began before Discord was even a thing, huh? Don't switch for the time being, unless most of them are okay with it.

These guys seem to have the right idea:
>>791185
>>791233

The whole point of outside means of communication is for added convenience. And by using those, you merely make your updates more widely-known. There's nothing wrong with trying to get the word out to as many people as possible, especially with the smallish player-base here on /qst/.

And regarding the whole effort thing. It's like this: Imagine you own a car that you really like. Sure, you can just let the rain wash the dirt off of it, but actually washing and waxing it really completes the look of it, makes it pop. Nobody should have to tell you to wash your damn car, it's totally optional, but if you care about it and don't want it to rust and look like shit, you should probably wash it.

So no, the OP does not need updated, just like car owners' manuals shouldn't have a whole chapter on washing your car. Either you do it of your own accord because you care, or you don't because you either don't care or feel like it doesn't need it.

I personally try to get the word out in as many ways as possible, but I've seen QMS that only announce new threads on the general, and just sort of run their sessions without any kind of announcement, they still get players. Though it makes me mad when it's a quest that I follow, since I usually miss the beginning of the session.
>>
I just use filters to highlight and bring quests I follow to the top of the catalog. But I'm also at my computer all the time and regularly refresh every catalog for every board I visit.
>>
>>791159
From where do these magical interested participants come from?

The player base on /qtg/?

There is a small one, and they usually hang out here and shitpost. They don't troll /qst/ and look for active quests - the only active wquests can all be seen on the front page, and if they're not interested the go to other boards and never see /qst/ again, at least until they're bored.

That was the entire issue with why /qst/ would never survive on it's own. The player that quests got happened upon them cruising the boards they liked. There has never been a 'community of questers', only 'people who see something interesting and try it out'.

Getting good means nothing if the people that you are aiming your quest at at never existed.
>>
Exiled Quest is running again.

>>791522

>Getting good means nothing if the people that you are aiming your quest at at never existed.

Honestly it sounds to me like you're just whining. Just because /qst/ is a slow board doesn't mean there are no people on it. If you have even one player then your quest is alive and will get bumped, which will allow random anons to find it, become interested in it and allow it to grow. You are a good enough writer to get one player, right?
>>
>>791159
Oh fuck off. The lack of participation kills Quests no matter their quality, because no if there's too few people to spread the word, the playerbase will dwindle.

Case in point, Dynamic Quest. The writing was solid, the mechanics were decent, but there was no fucking players. Apparently no one here even followed the links the QM and I posted, content to spend their time here, bitching about how there were no new quests. I'd say half of the players were people I introduced the quest to on akun.

Well it's over now, kudos to DynamicQM for sticking around as long as he did. But it goes to show that the prophecy of qst dying is a self-fulfilling one.

>>
>>791743
He's right though. Player count for quests that aren't aping the fanbase of a previously existing piece of media have genuinely drawn those players in with a creative setting or story or some other quality worth spending time on. When someone creates a fanfic quest they're drawing in players without actually earning them. The quality of the quest becomes completely irrelevant, only the popularity of the piece of media it is pretending to be. It means literally nothing to have a lot of players. It doesn't make sense to evaluate playerbase on a fan fiction quest since the story being ripped off has already gathered fans, so a qm can just draw players from the dregs and soggy leavings of someone else's superior writing. Original quests, such as Banished, are pure and can therefore be objectively evaluated based on their number of players. There is gimmick, name or other factor that the qm has attached themselves to to create a playerbase. Original quests have to survive solely on their own merits. Of course their players mean more and of course Banished's popularity elevates it to the best quest to ever grace /qtg/, dare I say even the best quest of all time.

>>791814
That's cause you don't have a good quest to let die.
>>
>>791814
Yeah you come to show off your major league autism.
>>
>>791662
Except there are no random anons. There are a few people who lurk here, and that's it, and they might like your quest if you're lucky and hit the points those particular anons are looking for. The random anons are on the boards where the style of quest was born, and don't come here.

It's not whining, it's facing a basic truth.

As far as having good enough writing to get one player, that's missing the point entirely. If that player doesn't want to read a fantasy quest, and you are writing a fantasy quest, you're not going to get that one player. If you aren't writing to the people interested in your material, you're not going to get readers no matter how incredible your writing is. Saying "write better and you'll get players" is missing the point entirely, and utterly stupid as a suggestion on how to get players.

Not even well written pandering can save /qst/. It's been tried.
>>
>>791814
Instead you come to passive-aggressively bitch about anyone more successful than you.

It's unsurprising you're glad to see other quests die.
>>
>>791814
Not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the quality of writing alone isn't enough to attract players. As you said yourself, the setting is also important, as are other factors. So pretending that all you need is good writing pissed me of, as I was admittedly still salty it died.
>>

I'm hardly the best writer and I've written quests in a variety of genres that have managed to attract players.

This "curse you unpleasable fanbase, my writing is perfect but all you people won't play because I don't pander" meme needs to die. This is 4chan. If you really put the effort behind a quest I don't think there's a niche you can't find players in.

>>791819
I hate to see any quest die. Its got to suck to put work out there to find yourself frustrated by a lack of interest and participation.

Okay Cosmic
From the OP catalog look, it's obvious that you're playing a kid and there's going to be action. The OP picture is a kid being heroic, the title lets us know that it's going to be action oriented but probably not 100% serious, and the text tells us that what we need to know. We're a kid, and we want to be a hero. Just because its not 'deep' doesn't mean its bad. A simple premise doesn't mean a bad one. With the text and OP picture, it should be obvious that we aren't some way super powered hero, but just a kid. Like, that's it. And that's fine.

Stick to one IP already Cosmic.

This isn't helping you any.

What would your psychiatrist think if she saw this?
Can you imagine the expression on her face?
Cosmic, do you even remember her face?
Do you remember her name?
It's Kate, Cosmic. Her name is Kate.
Please, you have to see her again. How long have you been off your medication?

Your prescription ran out weeks ago. Even if you rationed it, you'd be out by now.

You need help.

You'll note that I never claimed that Dynamic Kid Quest was the pinnacle of questing. I said that it was solid, which by the narrative you guys are spinning, should have meant that it would attract enough readers to survive, even without third party advertising. Instead it's a stillbirth because pretty no one here gave it a chance, which was my point.
>>
>>791909
Fuck off, you gaycuck. Just leave the general now.

>>791910
You're a shit person and a shit QM but Cosmic is worse.
>>
>>791885
It's not enough for me. Not nearly. You call it a simple premise, and it is, but I don't know anyone who opens every quest that manages little more than to not explicitly offend me in the OP. Maybe if there was some kind of indication of what this kid can actually do, or maybe a hint of his motives for doing so, or maybe showing that he has an interesting/fun personality, I'd feel gripped to read more. But I didn't.

You see, we have an entire board full of quests. If you show me 'simple' I will skip right over you. You've got to show me you're interesting and different from the rest of the shades floating down the river. You've got to show me a real selling point, show me your absolute best feature, right from the start. And that is why I, personally, did not pay attention to that quest.
>>
>>791910

>>
>>791922
Players drop out, players drop in. The latter gets harder and harder to achieve over time though, since you have to convince potential players to read the previous threads too, so if anything you should be paying even more attention to looking interesting the further you get into your quest.

Of course, considering OP image and title doesn't usually change as the quest goes on, this is just a matter of making all your OP texts interesting, and you should already be trying to make every single post you make interesting. Why wouldn't you?
>>
>>791935
Well, I suppose I can.

Your punishment, then, is to run only good quests from now on.

This of course means you'll have to drop all the "quests" you currently run.

I think we all need to have a serious discussion pertaining to the fact that our gracious quest master known as Soma. He is not the proficient writer we once thought him to be, in all actuality he is a hack and a fraud peddling low quality goods, he is equatable to the snake oil salesmen of yore. We have seen him throw out worthless and petty drama time and time again yet accepted his skill as a writer nonetheless, we suck in his scenes of mindless violence like a starving calf does his mother's teat, we do this even though it is obscenely obvious to even the lowest of the common plebes that violence could be written by a third grader. For far too long have we debased ourselves reveling in simple adrenaline evoking scenes and suffering through mindless drivel between. I say it is high time that we demand of Soma a higher quality quest and that he should be held accountable for his poorly thought out setting and plot lines that are so blatantly come up with on the spot. I personally have spent several weeks deep within the bowels of the beast known as the ircabal and in my times there I have gathered evidence which leads me to believe there is a origin point for all the flaws which our quest master has. I propose that soma is a autistic pedophile lacking in the common moral fiber that binds upstanding society, I assert this to have been the driving factor in his early leave from home as he had made unwelcome sexual advances upon his underage sister possibly even raping her. The resulting social backlash and banishment from his normal everyday life would be an extreme stress factor to someone with autism, leading to him seeking a way to vent his frustrations in some way. That way is Banished Quest; Banished Quest is an autistic pedophiles emotional vent enabled and allowed to continue for far too long. I thank you for your time reading all of this my fellow questing individuals and I welcome all constructive criticism.

That was one of the mods claims in the /qst/ creation thread on /tg/. Along with the idea that the /qst/ board shouldn't have image support for anons. And that there should be a 24 hour autosage. Those last two changed but they were obvious herrings anyways.

If not a mod, you're a parrot. A shitburd. Is that better? Yes. But don't let it go to your head. If someone can justifiably compare your post to a mods post you need to rethink your life, but you won't, that's not what shitburds do. You'll just shit, shit, shiiiiiiiit,

>>
>>793550
Your quest is only popular because your fans are drooling retards whos idea of fun is licking windows.
>>
>>793553
>he thinks soma made /qtg/ shit
/qtg/ has been shit since it's inception, years and years ago before it was banned off /tg/.
>>
>>793553
I'm afraid the rabbit hole goes much deeper than that. You see, over the last few months I have been investigating the source behind the staff's decision to create /qst/ as it could only have been a deliberate attempt at ending questing as whole. Why else would an executive decision be made that would so obviously splinter the questing community? But I digress. Over the months of my investigation I managed to pinpoint one such moderator by the name of RapeApe as the root cause for this shift and have been tracking him closely. He's made a few waves throughout the 4chan staff and other parts of the internet and has rarely been known to make good decisions.

I'll spare you the details of my investigation, but know that of the many trails that I've followed and rabbit holes I've dove into, one such internet community came to mind after reading this anons post. A small writing community for aspiring authors; I couldn't discern the reason why Ape would be visiting such a place and eventually marked it off as a passing interest of his. But after reading this anon's post and recognizing the site, I felt a chill run down my spine. I wanted to chalk it up to coincidence but reminded myself that coincidences don't exist. I went back to the community found Soma's profile that the kind anon mentioned in his post and hacked into the account (a simple enough affair; the man's password was his sister's name). Going through the private messages I found this little message sitting in his inbox from several years ago (pic related). As you can see, in October of 2013 RapeApe approached Soma on this quaint little writing community (which he was apparently in the process of ruining) offering some kind of compensation for performing a job that would take years to complete.
>>
>>793553
Forgive me if I'm being stupid but I thought posting personal info of people on 4chan was frowned upon.
>>
>>793566
Please keep in mind that this was about five months before Soma began Banished Quest, giving him ample time to build his setting. Further analysis of other results of my investigations revealed that the two have been in contact a number of other times, with the subject of money transfer occurring more than once (despite my strong disdain for this cancerous moderator, I have an even stronger disdain for the process of doxing others and won't be releasing any account details). With the previous anon's analysis in mind, I think it can be safely concluded that RapeApe paid Soma to utilize his apparent skill in disrupting communities by creating Banished Quest in an effort to kill questing once and forall.

Thus far, he’s been fairly successful. Soma’s proven ability to raise a following of rampant shitposters and encouraging others to follow in his footsteps in the creation of other low quality quests has resulted in the creation of /qst/, as masterstroke in the death of questing as a medium. Most recently the chaos created and managed by Soma has allowed Ape to gain enough power to ban questing from all other boards, which can only serve as yet another nail in the coffin. While RapeApe is certainly the mastermind behind the downfall of this wonderful medium we all know and love, it is certainly apparent that Soma just as great a contributor as he. I hope you all find this information useful to your own prosecution of Soma, as I must return my focus to the Ape.

May we yet prevail against the evil plaguing this site,

Your friendly neighborhood Whitehat Hacker.

I seem to have forgotten my evidence I'm the latest post. Unfortunately I cannot post it easily from a mobile device (my life style makes it hard to do otherwise at the moment; too many enemies working for the ape), but here is the image link http://i.imgur.com/kUDhFbT.png
>>
>>793568
There's an exception for Soma because he gave out all this stuff for free because he's lonely and enjoys eating terrible americanized chinese food with some of his players that live nearby.
>>
>>793588
Thank you for enlightening me to these things that I had let slip past my gaze, I truly had no idea just how deplorable this man was. To think such a deep network of boogeymen was sitting underneath our noses all this time. It is rather hard to believe I had thought myself so intelligent yet I was merely still staring at the shadows on the wall. These men and their colluding honestly make me sick to my stomach, luckily the world has men like you to save us in our time of need. Honestly Soma and this man RapeApe are a plague upon society itself, not just questing, by merely existing they make us worse as a species. With RapeApes meddeling and malicious intent and Somas inferior writing and following of reprobates they could full well destroy it all if left unchecked.

Truth/Half-truths/Conspiracies are far, far stranger than fiction... So I ask /qtg/: Should I stay the course? Change tack to make him a misunderstood real human bean and a real hero? Or play it like the MC thinks he's right and wrong at the same time and wants no part of what he does out of the public eye?
>>
>>795815
Don't necessarily make him a hero, but make his reasons for his actions very, very relatable, almost to the point where you want him to win, even though you know he's the villain.

What's the point of giving advice to QMs about making interesting intros and exposition, when we have these anons crybabying to be given infodumps at the start of a quest? I thought walls of text and infodumps to start a quest were bad!
>>
>>797763
If you want the viewpoint of a darker form of therapy (gay to straight comversion therapy back when I was 16 woo) then it's generally the same with a more negative slant

"Why are you lashing out by choosing to be a homosexual?"
"What trauma do you think led you to make this choice? Were you molested at a young age?"
"Why do you continue to hurt your family with this act?"

And then a lot of statements akin to "I'm your friend and I'm here to help", "You can trust me, whatever you say will stay between us"

As for openings it's best to go into detail of
>Who am I?

We are being summoned to a special mission briefing after a short stint of R&R back at the FOB. One of your teammates is down from the running defense of the convoy the morning before, but you have gained a potentially powerful friend in a newcomer to the base. What does the colonel have in mind with a 'special mission'? All you know is that there is an Ace Mobile Suit pilot out there who wants your blood and you won't let a dirty Zeek get in your way of revenge.

The concept is a lowly conman steals money from the wrong people and has to use his skills to find some way out of the situation whether its getting the money, getting the people owed arrested or just hauling ass out of the country. It'll be more reliant on how creative the players can be rather than rolls and preset stats to determine how successful they are.

Do non-drawfags ever consider putting a bit of time in to become drawfags?

I don't think every quest needs to be a drawquest, but so many would be a lot better with some original art to help along the writing.

Just asking because I think it's a worthwhile investment that not a lot of QMs seem to make since like only like 10% of quests are drawquests.
>>
>>802602
I disagree, there are many quests where the theme or tone just isn't compatible with the simple art styles necessary to pump out updates quickly.
>>
>>802604
That's fair. Still, there's plenty that would benefit from it. It's a lot more intimidating than it is actually hard.

I just don't know where or how to start
>>
>>802602
only drawquest I've read was audit quest and even there i considered the art secondary to the writing

Conclusion: I disagree, it would be a massive waste of time
>>
>>802602
>A bit of time
Man, you're seriously underestimating what it takes to draw not horribly.
>>
>>802607
you don't even really need to be a good artist to make a good drawquest. see: rubyquest
>>802609
>underestimating
It's not as hard as you think to reach an acceptable level for quests. You don't need to be the next AH in terms of consistent visual output. A lot could get by with scribbles to just give a visualisation of what's happening, without necessarily relying on them.

I mostly say this because I find pulling generic art/photos to be just kind of boring as shit. Personal preference, I guess.
>>
>>802610
I think if a QM's writing is at a level that requires scribbles to help the reader visualise the situation (maps being an exception) the time would bee better spend proofreading/editing the post
>>
>>802602
No. I don't think trying to both write and draw in an acceptable time. You do one, not both, not realistic for most of us.
Drawing something like a map on my own time before running I might consider, but I'd be very ashamed if I posted it. I don't draw well.
>>
>>802616
I specifically said
>without necessarily relying on them

It's a good commodity that too few QMs consider because they see it as wasted effort. That you need to sacrifice writing quality in order to have drawings is kind of a silly way to think of it, especially when you consider how fast and loose a lot of drawquests are, art-wise.
>>
>>802620
not relying on drawing would imply the add nothing to the scene, making them wasted effort.
>>
>>802620
It's just too resource intensive trying to have good art with good writing. Melancholic's early threads had art in the early threads but QM dropped it.

IRL is also a factor too.
>>
>>802607
>I just don't know where or how to start

Andrew Loomis;Fun with a Pencil.

That's what that book is for. I've seen it recommended by people who draw well.
>>
>>802602
Pretty much what I'm currently trying to do. I haven't really done drawing of any kind on a computer but I'm having fun learning while running a simple quest.

It's taking a bit longer than I thought it would though. It's feels less like finding a way to convert your old drawing style to a computer, and more like learning to draw all over again. I can draw pretty passably by hand, but barely make a circle on my computer. It's weird.

>I mostly say this because I find pulling generic art/photos to be just kind of boring as shit. Personal preference, I guess.
I like that because it means the QM has no intention of fucking around. That monster? This monster. Look at how monster it is! Good enough. Describe a character? Picture adds flavor. Have scenery in mind? You can find a pic for it. Now players can picture it with you. Need inspiration? Pictures. Need waifus? Pictures. Husbandos? Pictures. Weapons? Pictures. Artifacts? Pictures. Battlegrounds? Pictures. Bossrooms? Pictures. Ruins? Pictures. Comfy? Pictures.

It is double-edged when they can just pick a really stupid unfitting picture, but that's generally not a problem. With solid writing the right pictures are a net positive. To be succinct; fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

Art to not support the writing but to replace chunks of it all together. Why would you need to repeat in words what your drawing already tells?
>>
>>802736
This is not unusual, it's common among most artists. The techniques do not translate well except int he most basic of sketching techniques.
>>
>>802777
Because art is subjective, and details might be missed.
>>
Plus it's possible to foreshadow with properly-timed pictures.
>>
>>802777
that works for talented/skilles/experienced artists, not for every writer

Is this the "My GM can't voice act for shit" argument all over again?

Learn to draw, you shit

I'd rather have a QM pick a good picture than show off their less than 200 hours worth of effort artform that added an arbitrary amount of time to their updates. If people really want a quest to have art unique to it they'll get a commission or do it themselves. If a QM wants art that fits their quest and adds to it they'll do the same.

I tried art a while ago, but I stopped after college as my pictures looked more like Picasso pictures.

Prof said it was part of my 'unique style'. I just wanted to burn the damn things.

This anon on the other hand could've been the next Jackson Pollock and sold his puke paint cubism for 3M a pop, but instead he squandered his talent.

What a shame.
