Fair enough. In that case, allow me to clue you in on something. Motorcycles aren't cars. The whole "hidden problems" stigma typically associated with buying used cars simply does not exist in the world of motorcycles. It's literally a motor bolted on to a piece of metal. The rest of the bike is nothing but inanimate (so to speak) objects that are dependent on nothing else but the laws of physics. There are no meme electronics. There is no power steering. There is no meme drivetrain or meme differential. Combined with the fact that the transmission and clutch all sit in the same basket of oil as the motor, they are pretty much indestructible. Especially if you're dealing with one of the popular Japanese bikes (SV650, Ninja 250, etc...)

I have a 450EXC from the same generation which is practically the exact same bike but with a 6mm smaller bore diameter.

The one I bought was rather beat up and didn't have the original odometer/chronometer so I have no idea how many miles/hours it actually has on it. Probably several hundred.
Anyway I spent most of my time catching up on stuff that was way overdue since it is a race dirt bike that went unmaintained for 13 years. Mostly external bearings and shit. After about 45 hours of my ride time (i put a dash on it as soon as I bought it) I ended up breaking a compression ring and it has been sitting since then.
Oil changes should be done about every 15 hours (turns out to be about 700 miles if you ride on the street or a lot less if you ride only off road). The oil capacity is 1.25L, or with an oil cooler you can bump it up to about 2L which would allow you to extend the changes a little. The valve maintenance really isn't that bad. They never needed adjusting except for when I first got the bike but when I took off the head I could tell the intake valves were worn.

If you buy an old dirt bike prepare to spend about an extra $1000 or so to rebuild shit. These bikes are fairly cheap used though so it should still come out a lot cheaper than buying a new enduro. Plus when you rebuild it you can get stainless steel intake valves that last much longer.

I love the way the bike rides though. The power delivery is smooth as butter but also really strong when you want it to be. The internal gearing ratios are perfect for dual sporting and it already comes with lights, which are weak but is convenient to already have a stator that supports lighting.

Got a shitbike question for you guys. I have $30 gift code for a well know online gear store and I don't know what it should go towards.

The code is valid until march and it's thinking of either better gloves or better boots. I started riding two years ago and I bought 'cheap' closeout gear. Since then, I got a new jacket and helmet but I still have a pair of gloves that aren't gauntlets with any wrist protection and riding shoes that have no ankle protection.

I've been looking for the past year for SV handlebars and the yoke to go with it, but I guess they aren't very popular.
