What's the best starter bike cc range(i don''t know if this is the way you guys speak)?

100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 or 500?
>>
>>16387478
It varies wildly
There are 250s that have the power of some 450s
Plus weight is a huge factor
Usually just research before you buy and know youll outgrow it in a season
>>
>>16387478
200-300 is a good beginners area.
>>
>>16387478
>>16387488
>>16387507
I would argue it depends on what kind of bike you're buying. For sport bikes a lower size is better, shit like that
>>
>>16387478
600-750
>>
>>16387543
But a 250 dirtbike would be faster than a 250 sport bike
>>
>>16387478
Displacement doesn't matter that much. Just avoid liters.

Buy a bike based on it's 0-60, 60-0, presence of shit like ABS and a slipper clutch, torque curve, wheelbase, and riding posture. Also make sure you know how to ride before buying a bike.

In other words, don't buy a straight up sport bike. Standard, yeah, sport-standard (ninja 250-650), yeah, sub-liter sport tourer, yeah, GSXR250, no.

And always fucking test ride for at least 30 minutes

Sport: Sub-1000 staying off 600 and 1000 R/RR classes.
Standard: Sub-1000
Cruiser: literally anything that isn't too heavy for you to pick up if you drop it like a twat

Of course all this is relative to your own ability to respect your machine and learn it responsibly; I started on a 500cc cruiser and am now on a 1300cc that's also 50% heavier and in hindsight would have been able to handle the bigger bike from day one. I also would have probably died or crippled myself in a very expensive, embarrassing way if I'd started on a 1000cc sportbike, however, so keep your own sensibilities in mind.

Hi, I know nothing about bikes.
Parents were staunchly against dirt bikes and motorsports when I was growing up, never got to be around them.
Planning to get a license or permit for motorcycles this summer, and to buy a nice dual-sport for riding around the city and just in general.
The bike I was looking at was the Suzuki DR-400. They're pretty easy to find around where I live and I think it's a pretty cool setup.

Good idea? Bad idea? 400 too much? Suzuki a shit?
>>

ignore my trip from /out/
ive got a 2007 klr 650 and after a pretty good crash during a log hop (went straight in to a tree, bent my bars broke a mirror, broke a wrist, dented my tank, and cracked my cowling, have since replaced the forks, and bars, am satisfied with one mirror)
im going to be buying an IMS tank and a new cowling, but i know the new cowling wont match my other plastics so i have two ideas
>rip off all the plastics, including the cowling, clean and sand them
>take them to a shop
>candy apple red with a good clear coat
>let the tank be black
oooor
>rip off all the plastics, including the cowling and tank (this time get it in the "natural" colour
>put a strip of tape along each side of the tank vertically
>get everything done in a nice candy apple red, no clear coat yet
>put the tank on the bike
>go to gas station, peel tape, start filling up
>every gallon, put a little black line
>once its full carefully go home
>take everything back to the shop
>clear coat
>now have fuel level indicator

I'm looking at replacing the stock muffler on my 2017 gsxr750. Most aftermarket (I'm ignoring the big brands, m4 two brothers etc) use springs to attach as well as a clamp. There's nowhere to attach the springs. Muffler runs nearly straight off the cat converter with just a short pipe coming off. Do I need to weld spring holders on? Seems counter productive to weld spring holders on instead of just welding the muffler on?
>>
>>16390947
If you don't know if you need it or not you probably don't.

I've had no difficulties that could require a steering damper on my bike and I'm sure I go harder than you right now. (It's probably a tiny bit more relaxed geometrically than a zx-6r but still.)

I just don't want you to get into the habit of becoming a bikeochondriac and thinking something always needs changing on the bike because it's usually just you that's the problem, those tankslappers that occur in a straight line usually only happen from retards with terrible front tyres that needed to be replaced months ago or putting down high speed wheelies all wrong.

But I mean it can't hurt to put one on.

Only 3 weeks old. I the long run I might replace with full system. But It would hold its value better if I could revert everything to stock if I sell it in 2 years

Muffler is one of the things that doesn't look tidy on it so I'm going to get something smaller, not expecting performance or sound gains.

It will be relying solely on the clamp since the smaller ones won't be able to be braced by the back mount

And the XR stock isn't 50whp. It takes some mawdz to get that.

>With the amount he was spending on the XR you could easily build a 40-45whp DRZ as well as have the suspension professionally rebuilt, revalved, and resprung.

That price included revalve/spring from RT for $1000.

Uncorking them is pretty much free.

I'm pretty sure an uncorked XRR with CRF fork swap and RT tuned suspension would be a much better bike than a heavily modded DRZ with tuned suspension.

Basically there's 2 sizes. There's "fat bars" which are 1,1/8 inches in the middle where they clamp on then taper down at the bend to 7/8" at the grip area. Then there's normal bars which are 7/8" all the way across.
Just figure out what size your clamps are and buy a bar.

Also there's different curves/heights of bars available. That comes down to preference.

https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/3094/Handlebars
>>
>>16392553
What's the point/difference between normal and fat bars? Is it just a bike specific mounting consideration?

How do I determine what curve/height I like without buying out the catalog and trying them all?

What's the difference between a $30 set of bars and a $70-90 set of Protaper bars if any?

Aluminum or steel?
>>
>>16392548
>Uncorking them is pretty much free.
99% of the XRR's you'll be able to buy will already be uncorked and typically have an aftermarket pipe.
>>
>>16392565
Fat bars are stronger
Aluminum wont flex as much as steel
$30 bars will bend on the first crash
$100 bars will last nearly forever.
Height and curve are dependant on riding style and your height.
>>
>>16392565
>on the street i would never bu
The cheap bars will usually be steel and the more expensive ones most likely aluminum.

The 7/8" bars usually have a cross brace to provide more rigidity and the fat bars are strong enough alone to not need them while still allowing a bit more flex which some people like.

Can't really help with the bend. What's your bike and how did you like the stock bars?
>>
>>16392565
for most riding youll probably like a 7/8" aluminum bar without a brace, steel works too.
braced bars will transfer more shock and vibration into your arms and wear you out faster.
1-1/8 bats are generally tougher since the highest stress part is so much thicker

Drench with penetrant and shock the bolt with a few hammer taps to vibe it so penetrant penetrates.

Use anti-seize on any fastener that doesn't get Loctite. Dry threads a worse shit than Hyosung.

>>16392731
I'm just going to not fix the nut, not use antisieze or loctite, zip tie the back side of the bolt so you can't tell the nut is missing from a cursory inspection and sell the bike to some stupid kid.
>>
>>16392660
I have Milwaukee, Makita and DeWalt and ran toolrooms with all the above. All of them work fine for hobby/light commercial use. Model is more important than brand.

If you kill a DeWalt, then get a bigger one or another brand.
>>
>>16392748
No, but it's better than water.

Use something like Liquid Wrench penetrant. Couple squirts and let it sit a couple hours then give it a few more squirts then let it sit overnight.
>>
>>16392751
That works too but you should fix it for practice if you don't care about it because that is far from the last fucked fastener you will encounter. Once you get gud most such tasks are easy.

If you have a straight shot through the welded fitting that bolt goes into and room on the other side you can drill the threads if they are fucked and use a longer bolt with a locknut on the inboard side.
>>
>>16392748
Liquid Wrench, CRC or similar penetrant preferred.

The ATF and acetone mix trick works very well for people who have spare ATF laying about. Acetone is cheap at hardware stores.

I use 'em all. WD-40 is poor penetrant but wonderful for drilling, cutting and machining aluminum. Many machinists use it for that.
>>
>>16392760
so you wait an entire day to touch every bolt?
>>
>>16392773
I don't have a welder. I have a shoebox half garage in San Francisco, so I'm not going to buy a welder. Someday.
>>
>>16392788
If you come across some seized or rusted bolts. You soak them a few times and let it sit overnight then attack them.

You could do it the same day but I prefer to wait and let the penetrant do it's thing instead of risking stripping or twisting the head off a bolt.

Also, don't use wrenches, don't use 12 point sockets. Use (quality) 6 point sockets of the appropriate size to break these stuck nuts/bolts loose.

I didn't say you needed a welder,

If you have a straight shot through that welded mount you could drill out the threads IF required AND there is room for a nut behind it.

If it's a blind hole mount and it was just a corrosion issue the threads may be good.

If they are not, post pic of fitting so I can see into the hole, and ask advice.
>>
>>16392800
what would you do when you get the bolt out the threads on the bike are all crusty? penetrant and try to brush them?
>>
>>16392800
Even Harbor Freight impact six pointers will do. Main thing is the six point engagement to avoid rounding soft bolt heads.
>>
>>16392839
Yes, then finger tighten bolt to check feels. A dab of grease or engine oil or vaseline will work if you don't have anti-seize, but I suggest getting a bottle since one jug can last years and it can be used to protect futurebikes.

>buy caliper
>buy quality drill bit
>buy tap set

>Caliper the holes to find the stock hole size.
>Caliper a few of them if they're stripped pretty bad and use the smallest measurements to determine size.
>Select the next larger size drill bit that you have a tap for
>Buy new bolts for this new size in the appropriate lengths, refer to stock bolt lengths for reference.
>Drill all the holes out to the new drill size.
>Tap the holes carefully and make sure you are true to the hole while taping
>Clean threaded holes and reassemble with new bolts

Make sure you are using metric taps of the appropriate pitch if on a metric bike. One thing i can't stand is retards who tap metric bikes/cars with "close enough" SAE thread and bolts. Most of the time it's just jamming an SAE bolt into a metric threaded hole in aluminum and cranking on it until the threads "match".

I pay $2600 for a house.

I was paying $1600 for a 2 bedroom apartment last year. When i lived in San Diego I was paying $1900 for a two bedroom apartment.

Sometimes i think it would be cool to live in a cheaper flyover state. But then I think of how bored I would be and how shit life is for those mudpeople and it sets me straight.

If only that state wasn't filled with a bunch of shit people and shit laws. Then it would be a really great place to live.

With everything going on in the non-coastal west paying that kind of money to live in California isn't high on my personal list. Unless I get a job with SpaceX or something.

>>16392939
There is a lot of boring shit in the middle parts.

And honestly I can get pretty much anywhere in town in 15 minutes, in a car or on a bike, because the traffic isn't shit here.

>niggers
Stay out of LA and Oakland. Crisis averted.

>spics
Cheap labor and good food. What's the issue?

>liberals
The majority of the state area wise is pretty conservative. It's only the Bay area, Sacramento, and LA that is predominantly Liberal.
San Diego and Orange county are pretty conservative counties, urbanized, and have huge earning potential and economies.

>jews
I can't remember the last time i actually met a jew in the wild.

>cuck tier gun laws
>actually following retarded gun laws.
I own and regularly shoot 49 state AR's with 30 round magazines and evil pistol grips all the time. I even own some undisclosed NFA items via trust. Carry laws are actually pretty good in most of the state too.

the point is you brought up no traffic and everything 15 minutes away. the same can be said about ca for bikers.

But there is still traffic. Filtering through traffic is better than sitting in traffic, but still slower than if there were no traffic.

>>
>>16393017
SpaceX pays pretty decent and offers (forces) you pretty much unlimited overtime.

They have a huge turnover rate though due to the work conditions. People get burned out.

Even their entry sheetmetal worker technicians make like 60,000 starting. And then they work like 30 + hours a week in overtime.
>>
>>16393016
But it's not like you can get rid of heavy traffic

Every faggot in the world has a four door sedan with enough boot space to fit a decent TV even when they're a single person who maybe has one passenger at a time at most, and most of them accelerate very slowly

Those people are not going to be replaced with drivers of compact cars that floor it when possible. Ever.

I have heard that as well, although I hear that about most of the big corps, especially Amazon.

>>16393043
I have sat in traffic once in the almost two years I've been here, and that was because a truck with a big camper rolled and blocked the entire highway. Even rush hour here is like down time in most "big cities"

I filter through traffic every day at 65-70mph.
I would otherwise cruise on the same freeway without traffic at ~70mph.

It takes me the same time to get to work on the weekend without traffic as it does during the week with traffic on my bike. (~20 minute commute on the 210)

In CA we have nearly an entire dedicated lane for bike splitting in the #1 carpool lane divider which is a double yellow. And most cager commuters know bikes are coming through so they hug the far left of the #1 lane, you could drive a car through the space left.

All you typically have to worry about is the occasional idiot sitting on the divider and the opening where cars can go in/out of the carpool lane.

>>16393057
My little brother is a warehouse division supervisor for Amazon. He works 7 days a week most weeks.

The problem is that you're talking to people who are obsessed with guns who are also californians. That's at the intersection of dumb and retarded.

Just owning a gun isn't a black mark on anyone. You have your "hunting is a sport" faggots who go on and on about their well kept winchester, you have your "teh man is after meh" faggots with their collection of slavshit, and then you have the other 99% that just owns guns because they come in handy, usually whatever guns they ended up with, sometimes the nicest shit they could get when in the mood to buy a gun (aka AR15s)

So, anyways, about the guns california doesn't allow. A deer tag is like $20. A whitetail buck is around 150lbs, maybe 110lbs of edible meat (including choice organs) after preparation. Tell me, where can you get 110lbs of meat for $20? Retail pork costs $4 a pound. Now tell me, why would you cripple yourself with a "sporting" rifle when you could use an "assault" rifle that makes it easier to collect your food and complete the pest control task assigned to you by the state when you were issued your tag? Let me guess because killing animals is a "sport" to be enjoyed and made difficult and not a grisly job done to ensure the prosperity of yourself and the ecosystem as it is with humans filling in for all the wolves we can't get along with? Tell me about your gold plated winchester 30-ayt-six.
>>
>>16393021
>some retard on the internet trys to dictate what is a "dumb" sport for everyone else.

You're an idiot. just because you want to abandon your rights and don't like guns doesn't mean other people aren't so quick (or so stupid) to abandon their own rights.

The place to work on aircraft for a career is the Air Force, then do a second career in contract maintenance, AFETS, or work for a manufacturer. You can just retire young and never have to work again. I did and I don't have to though I've done work and school for fun. If you get a degree, become a maintenance officer who actually knows how to work on aircraft. I retired enlisted but of course officers make more money. I worked avionics, engines, was a crew chief and got my AMT ticket while I was in. Would do again in a fucking heartbeat. I haven't felt a Recession since 1981 which is also nice.
