Melbourne Commuter Rail network
>Pros:
-Covers most of the suburbs
-Loop drops off and picks up people around the city centre
>Cons:
oh boy where to begin lel
-Since 1969 every single government has focused on building Freeways and letting rail rot. 1969 Melbourne Transportation Plan laid out 10 Freeways, the last was finished in 2005. They're all congested. People are switching back to rail use. So the plan is to build more freeways.
-With the focus on road development and the lack of investment in maintaining or upgrading the railways the infrastructure slowly rotted away and services suffered. In the early 2000s a big surge began in patronage that the network has struggled to cope with
-Privatization has not helped these matters, the labyrinth of contractors responsible for different elements has made it harder to address.
-The suburbs of Doncaster in the NE, roughly a straight line north of Box Hill and east of Heidelberg, and Rowville, area between the Dandenong and Belgrave lines, have no rail access and need it.
-Because of the focus on road development which generates low density sprawl as a result of its finite capacity new suburban developments beyond the range of the railways have sprung up in the north and west in very marginal land and former farmland. Now that they're there I guess they need rail services but building that far away shouldn't be going on the first place

Melbourne Tram network
>Pros
heavy coverage in the city centre and surround inner urban area. You can hop off the trains catch the trams to keep going, switch from one tram to another, etc
>Cons
-Quite a few stops are often only 100 meters apart
-In older streets that have one lane on either side of the tram tracks the councils often allow curb side parking - meaning people park in that one lane, meaning all traffic is forced on the tram tracks meaning all traffic grinds to a halt!
-The lightrail extensions to Bundoorah and Vermont South are useless, they take too long, go too far out, and carry too few people to be worthwhile for the investment. And once they turn onto road operation they slow right down anyway.
-So many routes in the North going to/from the city but nothing going across them :\

Roadies, report in. Where do you ride. What sort of distance is your average ride. What average speed do you ride. What do you ride?

I'm riding between 40 and 50 miles on a sunday morning, tackling some decent hills (cat 4 according to strava) and riding at 15mph. pic related.

Depends on what I'm doing if it's a commute then it's like 4-5 miles with some hills 17-25 on flats 10-16 on hills but if I'm doing a long ride then it's more like 18mph (the trail near me is almost perfectly flat for like40 miles one way.

Same guy, I ride a Schwinn continental with shamjno brakes and treko ergo brakes but the rest is stock
>>
Where = different places, prefer mountains. I have some nice HC climbs around my area which are fun.
Speed = Average for the whole ride is generally around 30-35 depending on how much of it is spent climbing.
What = Aluminum frame, but upgraded to ultegra, really light wheelset, etc.

Rides are generally around 100-120km and now that I have classes I can only realistically get out twice a week. During summer usually 3 or 4 times a week.

Why do people put so much emphasis on side lights? Does it really help with anything? Anytime you come across traffic perpendicularly, it's either they yield to you or you yield to them. By the time anyone really sees the side lights, it's too late and collision is imminent.

What are the pros and cons of steel, aluminum, magnesium, titanium and carbon?
36 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>891763
>carbon
Best combination of weight, strength, stiffness, compliance, and aerodynamics, however it is not as mature a technology of metals. Contrary to popular belief, carbon is not fragile and does not suffer from fatigue, but it can be very difficult to tell if carbon is damaged or has cracks that will lead to more catastrophic failure down the line. Metal is malleable, and will bend, crease, and it is easy to see cracks before it breaks completely. Carbon is either expensive or of questionable quality control.

>titanium
As light as aluminum, more flexible than steel. Extremely expensive due to material costs, and while titanium doesn't normally suffer from fatigue as aluminum does, but the difficulty in welding leads many titanium frames to crack near the welds. Like aluminum it doesn't need to be painted, and many technogeeks find titanium a very prestigious metal. In addition to the high costs that make it cost as much as carbon, titanium's weak point is the flexibility and difficulty of forming complex shapes, meaning the chainstays can not be very stiff.

>Magnesium
Don't make them like that anymore. There were some innovative cast magnesium designs, but those have become irrelevant with advances in hydroforming.

>Aluminum
Cheap and light, the default frame material for a modern bike. Aluminum suffers from fatigue, but an aluminum frame will last the designed lifetime of the product, usually for a few decades. That makes them lack the timelessness and permanence of other materials and makes them part of a consumer culture, but most people will be willing to buy a new frame in a few decades. Cheap ones have a reputation of having a poor ride. Aluminum is easy to hydroform though, and like carbon can be designed to have various ride characteristics, and even some degree of aerodynamics. The problem is expensive aluminum frames often exceed the cost of cheap carbon frames.
>>
>>891768
And steel?
>>
>Steel
Not any cheaper than aluminum, in some cases as expensive as carbon. They rust. Some people claim you can repair them, but it's almost always just cheaper to replace. Some examples have lasted many decades, if not over a century, if in fact you feel compelled to hand it down to your grand children as an heirloom, assuming that they want your cruddy old bicycle, it it hasn't been destroyed in a crash between now and then. Lauded for ride quality, the better carbon and titanium frames at least match it. The biggest advantage is the durability and the fact that it is old technology, meaning you can readily buy it on the second hand market. It's also has lots of tradition, since bicycles have been made with steel for much longer than any other material. You can increase the performance to be as light as heavy aluminum but price increases astronomically and durability plummets. It is difficult to separate vertical compliance from lateral stiffness using round steel tubes, and the availability of actual aerodynamic steel tubes is next to none.

That being said, second hand steel is good enough for most people, and it's been good enough for many many decades.

I want to get a hitch mounted bike rack that can carry at least 4 bikes and can accomodate full suspension bikes, bikes with very large top tubes, and a 5" fat bike. I was planning to get a Yakima Fourtimer, pic related. Which is compatible with all of my concerns except maybe not 5" fatty (they have "fat straps" that accomodate fat bikes but apparently not 5" fat bikes).

Then someone suggested I instead get a cargo tray and carry my bikes in that (I'll post a pic in a few seconds). What do you guys think? Get a Yakima or get something not designed for bikes? I don't know how I would get the bikes to securely sit in something like that but surely it would be possible.

I bought a hitch mounted platform rack, like the one in your OP, and I like it. The downside of a cargo tray, is that you don't have the supports for the tires, which makes the bikes more likely to tip over, unless you're just laying them on top of one another.

I didn't go for a Yakima, or Thule, because they are honestly far too expensive. I did get a pretty good one off of Amazon, that had good reviews, and didn't cost an arm and a leg. It was only about $200.

Cyclists always have a right to the road, regardless of if you can see the bike lane lines or not. Could also say snow on the lines, or dirt, or that they've faded.
>>
In certain parts of the world railroad track maintenance fails to clear the extensinve falling leaves from the rail. As trains pass over them it crushes them creating a thin, yet very slippery layer upon the railhead. This makes operations difficult and delays and cancellations iminent.

The obvious objective of this decidedly British advert is to advocate cycling instead of taking the train. It's dumb.
>>
It's protesting against civil involvement in community maintenance.
A lot of neighbourhoods expect residents to maintain their own streets: pulling weeds out of cracks, sweeping debris off the road, et cetera.

The given text is saying "fuck that, it's the city's job."

Why aren't contra-rotating turboprop engines used on aircraft more? They can produce an incredible amount of power, can increase efficiency by 6%-16%, and can go incredibly fast. Sure, they are a bit noisier, and the addition of the secondary propeller results in additional weight and complexity, but these don't necessarily outweigh the benefits. Take one of the only examples of these engines:

Kusnetsov NK-12MA Engine, used on both the Tupolev Tu-95 Bear and the Antonov An-22.
>15000 ESHP x 4 engines
>weighed 6393 lbs (2900 kg)
>sfc= 0.360 lb/shp-hr*
>turbine inlet temp: 1250K (977°C)
>single spool axial flow compressor (14 stage)
>12-chamber cannular combustor
>5-stage turbine
*Specific Fuel Consumption
For comparison sake, the specific fuel consumption for a common modern turboprop:
>Pratt & Whitney PT6T-6B
sfc= 0.591 lb/shp-hr

The Kusnetsov NK12MA is old technology, with the newer model (-M) designed in 1953. For an engine designed in the 50s, it is incredible! Why isn't the contra-rotating turboprop used more often? Surely with modern technology the engine can be modified for even greater efficiency, considering modern turbines can withstand up to 1200°C+.

Because passengers are terrified of visible propellers, and the vast majority of planes that would benefit from these are for carrying passengers who could just opt for an airline that uses non-terrifying planes.
