On the other hand it is balanced out by the points of light in the darkness.
The conversation between Rime and the imprisoned solar where she agreed to rescue the civilians was one of the most heartwarming things I have seen in a long time just as war brings out the worst in us it can also bring out the best in us.

I can think of only 2 things that could make Darkest Hour edgy.
1. General Perturbation engages in her namesakes act of decimation.

In my setting, horns naturally continue growing and require semi-regular maintenance, such as filing, to keep them looking nice and even.
Horns grow back naturally within a couple years as long as the unicorn's skull isn't damaged when its horn is detached.

Unicorns can do some magic with a broken horn, but it's minimal and can be uncomfortable or painful for the unicorn.

Quests have different amounts of agency in different quests. In some they're directing the MC. In some they're controlling the MC. In some they're controlling the MC and can influence the rest of the world. For example:

Lo and behold, if the QM likes it the chief will be a trap that thinks he's manly. The players manipulated the world. He was complaining about the players and QM having fun.

Sometimes I will write a paragraph as suggestion - especially when I want to suggest the MC's part of a dialogue, but most of the time some brief instructions will be given and the QM does the writing.

It kinda depends on the quest, but generally speaking, all important decisions and even a majority of minor ones should be done by the player, as long as it doesn't interrupt the flow too much. No need to ask "do you want to brush your teeth? y/n".

Most of the time, player posts are one or two lines long, and describe more the general attitude the MC should have, or a specific, single action.
By "full-blown collaborative writing experience" I meant players who would write a few lines of dialog, queue reactions to their environment's own reactions, or generally trying to interact more deeply with the world. Describe feelings and body language more, anticipate the world's reactions. Take a bit of the actual writing off the QM's shoulders.

You have no idea of how annoying that is. Well over half the time, when someone does that, their writing is horrible.
Besides I won't copy your dialogue verbatim, in fact I'll make an effort not to-- the result of doing this for every player would be everything being disjointed as fuck.
It's faster and easier to parse a reply that's one or two lines long. If the QM doesn't want to write they shouldn't QM.

As always, there's a hell lot of various shit on the poor student poner. Maybe it's just the rebels' armour, or it's your shtick appearing again. She looks exactly like you'd expect a battered revolutionary to look like, but her lower half seems kinda broken. I mean no harm, but have you seen many pictures of sitting ponies before? It's almost like you drew it, but also a bit off. But practice, and you will be good.

As for the quest, nothing is worse than usual and I enjoy the storytelling, although the "from-danger-to-danger" thing seems to be painfully prevalent no matter what is said. At least we could get some rest in Manehattan.
