For the longest time I remember they were the primary example of how NOT to make compilation movies, especially around places like the MechaTalk forums. Public opinion has changed in recent years though, and with the recent BD and RightStuf releases, they've been reevaluated as "okay", with the first movie obviously being the worst of the pair.

They were fighting to keep ZAFT from occupying Orb.
The trouble is that even if you can see ZAFT as using Djibril as a pretense to invade Orb, it doesn't change the fact he's escaped, and is extremely dangerous, and nobody at Orb thinks of looking for him until Cagaili gets kicked off the battlefield. At no point during the battle does anyone try to call it off to look at the bigger picture, and even something as simple as that would easily get Orb off the hook in this situation
Hell, you could argue that Orb is complicit in that once he arrived, nobody thought of just taking him down anyway for the good of everyone, and just sat by doing nothing, because "they had orders" and the Jonas were in this guy's pocket.
When you think about it harder, it's a battle to defend the mass murderer rather than Orb's freedoms.
Meta-wise, they needed to have a battle where Strike Freedom and I-Justice do something other than beat up grunts, so they drummed up a poorly written storyline to do it.
This isn't a good series.

Like pretty much every OVA for Gundam that isn't 0080, it's only positive trait is that it's pretty to look at. The story is not much different than like SEED or Age where they take a greatest hits of the UC and try to slightly tweak it to make it work

Have trouble naming some things. Not entirely sure if my sentences are correct or my paragraphing is done well.
Story is pretty simple. right now I'm writing some key backstory events that take place 40-1 years before the main story that will makeup the prologue.
>Virus breaks out in Jupiter colonies (40 years before main story)
>Federation dispatches fleet to keep it contained so that people don't accidentally spread it
>people resent the federation. riots violence
>people desperate and angry to escape try to force their way out of the blockade
>their ship is sunk by feddies
>religious political leader incites more riots and rebellion who are mad that ship was blown up
>Military ship crewed & captained by Jovian colonists rebels against the feddies(37 years b4 main story)- Fight between ship happens Jovian ship is destroyed. in the fight a colony is destroyed, millions die. Jupiter and local feddie Garrison(who are colonists) rebel against the Federation and its military
>They are the first to use Mechs (basically mobile suits) in battle, super effective (35 years)
>Sting of victories pushes feddies back to Mars. big fights happen there, mars people don't like having the derbies falling on their homes, Becomes neutral state, belter colonies do the same (34-25 years b4)
>Fights only happen every few years. Jupiter terroists use Jupiter's neutral relationship with Mars to sneak to Mars than to earth (15 years b4. ISIS>Mexico>USA kinda shit)
>Religious conversion+bombings. Main character's(MC age13) family is killed (except little brother) in a bombing 10 years before the main story
>MC(age17) joins military (Who have adopted Mechs) & becomes pilot(6 years b4)
>MC helps to win major battle(3year b4), becomes sorta famous(Like Char)
>MC is recalled to give speech to new officer graduates. (1 week b4 main story)

Earth is like Republic of Rome (suits will sorta look like their infantry javilins are anti MS missiles, Pilum is just better missile. later will look like Legionnaires.)
Mars is like merchant Greeks. (not many warshpis, mostly transports. lots of trading. They end up stealing suit plans from both sides and making hybrids that are drone controlled by a sophisticated AI)

Not much honestly, my only issue with the series is that the individual episodic stories became repetitive after a while. Yeah, we get it, everything is destroyed and there's no hope. It just became a little too monotonous for its own good.
If the show had been maybe 3-4 episodes shorter, it would have been much more enjoyable.
