Everyone kept saying that this show is awful but after watching it, it felt more mediocre overall with some very intrusive elements and blatant writing fuck ups.
All the good things came from Fukuda trying to mimic Tomino, any time if would try to put his own sauce things would fall apart before you'd realize what happened. Curiously despite all his faults, he's very effiicent at using the OST, making a not so interesting nor exciting story much less tiresome to watch than you'd expect, the sountrack is carrying the show.
Then you have all those nonsensical things. For the 30 first episodes, SEED doesn't try to be much more than a poor man's 0079 but after that point things get weird as they try to have a very small force serves as the strawman in a planetary scale war.
Kira's character is completely derailed as he's magically thrown into Lacus' magical garden and reached illumination in the form of "understanding". Assrun becomes an afterthought once the understanding disease is passed to him. Then there's Lacus' character who doesn't make any sense, she doesn't even do anything, she just comes around, talk bullshit and tells others how to live their lives and that's it. Weapons are so bad I'm telling you!

I won't dwell too much on the use of stock footage but it was obscene. Is there a story behind Azrael's pilots? They are terrible nobodies that magically won't die no matter what Kira/Assrun throw at them for 10+ episodes but when Yzak arrives he takes them out casually in two episode. When Tomino uses fodder, they barely last more than one episode.
Why does Fukuda enjoy blowing people up with microwaves so much?
Why does Andy magically survives even though all he does is sit in a chair?
How did Kira get out of the Strike in episode 30?
How come the OP/ED paint those main characters are passionate couples early on when they actually barely interact?
Did Kira and Assrun become newtypes in the last episode?
Flay was the best character.
Nicol liked to play the piano.
Tolle didn't fly so well.
Buster was stuck in a endless stock footage loop.
Despite claiming to make the impossible possible, Mu didn't make SEED good.
And remember that Kira didn't even kill Rau himself.

What's the most successful mass produced unit of any /m/-related media?
I think the crown goes to the Mass Produced EVAs, who were unkillable when they needed to be, and succeeded in their mission with no failure.
Runner up would be the DOM units in Seed Destiny, but they were only godmode due to Lacus Wankery.

so in another thread I mentioned I wish there where more horror mechas like M3 or Betterman or some of the earlier bits in Armageddon but truthfully Im not entirely sure how to make the concept work beyond just the basics. weaker mechs, really vulnerable mcs etc
how'd you all go about it. I liked how the MA-vess of m3ran on dead peopleand Betterman really liked to play with it's heroes senses.

You might have been the person who responded to me a while back, not sure by now.
Dai-Guard and Tetsujin are there mostly to show some examples of early attempts Earth made in robot technology, and how clunky they are in a sense compared to the "better" technology of the Gundam. Tetsujin is just a large hunk of walking remote-controlled metal, and Dai-Guard has its own hosts of issues.
Not to mention that they're originally rolled out because in the early parts of the story only a few strange occurrences are hitting Earth (a few aliens are around in space, but they haven't made any big appearance ground-side yet, just causing problems for the conflicts up there and often having the Radam complicate things as well), so the Federation wants to throw an old war relic and something originally made to fight Heterodyne at them, then Raideen and his villains come into play and then things just start spiraling.
GAIL would probably just be enlisted by the Zeon alliance to stir up trouble and assist them on ground-side assaults. At least until Gorg starts throwing rocks.
I don't want to cut it down to bare minimums, after all; I've already cut Dunbine, Iczer and Dangaioh from the concept. At this point the only other consideration I'm making for a cut would be Golion.
