The Prince and The Pauper,
The prince, born into a life of luxury,
He never has to work a day in his life, for has everything he would ever need at his fingertips,
He never has to worry about where his next meal will come from,
He has nothing but a care in the world,
Then there's the pauper, born into poverty
Every day he has to work from sun up to sun down, just so he can make ends meet
His life style causes him so much stress, always having to worry about where his next meal will come from,
No matter how hard he tries, he's always struggling to get by,
The pauper often envies the prince and his life of luxury,
He often wonders about what it would be like to have nothing but a care in the world,
It would be nice to not have to worry about where his next meal would come from,
Wouldn't have to stress about having the finances to take care of his family,
How does the prince feel about his life?
He tries to fill in the void in his life,
He's always wondering what is missing in his life,
He has everything he's ever wanted, but nothing ever seems right,
He wishes that he wasn't so lonely,
Even though he money to burn, he doesn't have any friends
He doesn't have any friend who would stick by him through thick and thin,
He doesn't have a single person in his life to support him when times are tough,
The Prince often envies the Pauper,
He thinks that it would have been better off he hadn't been born into wealth,
He wishes he could have a chance at a normal life,
To make friends,
To find love,
Instead, he just spends his days wasting his time on things that don't even matter, trying to find something that is truly worthwhile,
Wealth isn't everything this world has to offer,
Money can't buy you happiness, no matter how much you try,
It can't help you find true relationships that last a lifetime,
The only thing it can do is worsen your troubles,
And ultimately change a man into something that he wished he hadn't become....
Me and My Shadow,
In the end, it's only me and my shadow
The sun bringing light to all of my darkest fears,
And then cower in fear as my own cowardice is brought to the light,
These fears are better left unsaid, for they speak volumes of my own suffering,
This suffering, this shadow that constantly looms over me, during all hours of the day, and even in my dreams,
This shadow tells me of things that I should do,
He tells me to kill, he tells me to slay em' all, he says it'll make everything ok
I don't listen to him, but he keeps putting ideas into my head
He tells me to stab them, punch them, shoot them, KILL THEM!
He tells me to end myself,
Even tells me to go out with a bang, make a big sure of it all, make it one big show!
He tells me that it will bring meaning to this pitiful existence of mine
Sometimes, I listen to him, his words of encouragement bring out some the worst of me,
It saddens me to think that he could even sway my conscious , my unwavering sense of morality
This creature turns one of the most pious men into a monster of a man, beyond control of any and all who try to contain him,
This creature reeks havoc, destroying anything and everything that it can get its hands on,
Whether it be home, friends, family, relationships, everything you've ever known and cared for, it will ruin
Sometimes I ignore the words of the beast, and my suffering only worsens
These plights that afflict me cause me so much pain, grief, sadness,
He often tells me to finally end my perpetual cycle of sufferance by ending my pitiful existence,
But what of it?
What if I did, what would become of me then?
Would my family be able to understand why I did it?
Would there even be a single person who would shed a tear over my passing?
All of these things come into question whenever I start to believe my shadow's words.....

What are your opinions on brazilian /lit/? I noticed some people here enjoy pic related andd Drummond, but I really haven't seen geniuses as Machado de Assis mentioned throughout my years of lurking.
Have you read any brazilian books? If so, what were your impressions?; and if not, what is your overview about that country's literary production, if any?

Olavo Bilac is pretty good. Lispector is cool.
What's a word for if someone, tired of having to go along with pretences, uses dry humour to covertly suggest that what they're saying is funny because it's so very not true?
They'd express it in a deflated, removed way. They're ridiculing that others won't pick up on it, but not with any obvious exaggeration or rudeness. It's like flat irony. It comes across as fairly jovial but an unmutual and detached way of dealing with people. They'll reply to inquiries about them that they can't outright say don't apply with joke scenarios about themselves in situations related to the inquiries. The scenarios aren't ha, ha funny. They're just quips. In a way it's like when you know you're lying, nobody else does but you're insecure and scared and don't know if they'll ever find out so when you like you try not to be too serious incase you're caught out. You go along with what everyone's saying to and about you impersonally like it's a game of circumstance you can't navigate out of without exposing yourself, so you just do your best at playing it "unwillingly" or something.
I think there's a word for this or a much better description. i can't fucken explain gud enuf thnx

What are the best books on writing, /lit/?
Certainly not Strunk and White.
At Swim-Two-Birds
Just read books written by masters of the craft and write everyday. Guides are as useful as fucking horoscopes.
What are some novels where the protagonist's motivation is primarily sexual, e.g. Lolita?
Every novel.

Has someone read Marx's capital?
I'm really stuck so I hope someone can help me out:
Marx talks about exchange value ( for example 1 coat = 2 hammers which means that there is something that 1 coat and 2 hammers have in common, for they are exchangeable, and this common thing is labor which means that the amount of labor-time socially necessary to produce 1 coat, is equal to the amount of labor-time socially necessary to produce 2 hammers.
In the form commodity A = commodity B ( 1 coat = 2 hammers), commodity A is the relative value-form and commodity B is the equivalent form.
At a certain point, Marx talks in a polemic way about the mercantilists, the people who believe that the equivalent form (commodity B) determines the value of the relative use value (commodity B) and Marx says that this is completely ridiculous and laughable and he puts it like this: 1 coat (commodity A) is equal to 2 hammers (commodity B) but also equal to 2 pants (commodity C), 4 shirts (commodity D) and so on, and so on. So we see here that the relative use value (1 coat/commodity A) doesn't change, but the equivalent form does: the equivalent form is 2 hammers OR 4 shirts OR 2 pants. This means that the relative value-form determines the size of value of commodity B and not the other way around.
So here comes the problem:
When the the amount of labor-time socially necessary to produce commodity B increases, because of extern factors, the value of B increases too, for there is more labor-time necessary to produce comodity B and the labor-time socially necessary determines the value.
But because the value of commodity B (2 hammers) increases, the value of commodity A decreases:
the initial form:
1 coat = 2 hammers
current form, after the increased value of commodity B:
1 coat= 1 hammer
So the value of commodity A decreased, because of commodity B, which means that the equivalent form CAN determine the value of the relative value-form, right?
Help me out!

You are moving to Italy

alternatively you like opera, though I'm not sure this merits an entire "learning" of the language

Are there more like these things??
What are the best anthologies with various authors of literature? I was thinking about getting the Oxford and Ecology of English literature volumes 1 and 2. What else would you recommend of these sorts of anthologies? They're huge and they give you a lot of good stuff for really cheap.
>>8173784
I wouldn't get one. They're usually under cultural marxist pressure to include women and nonwhites that have no place there
>>8173789
fuck off
the Norton anthologies are popular and well liked by schools
