Hello /lit/

I have started with the Greeks and resumed with the Romans.

My question is after I have continued with the Christians, do I then Ruminate with the Renascence men? or do I back up to the Byzantines?

And at which time do I adventure with the Arabs and examine the east Asians?

allow me to post meme relating to black man and the king word next to it (get ready this is hilarious): we wuz kings (the implication being that blacks were never kings but they try to make shakespeare and egypt black to justify them not being inherently inferior to the white man)

wanna argue that blacks were kings? not kings as we understand it. they were kings, maybe in etiopia, but they werent civilized and hence the WE WUZ KINGS meme is valid to combat that idea

No. Immanuel Kant.

I got this for 3.50 dollars on amazon with 2 day prime membership shipping, same with wuthering heights a while ago. What are more insanely good steals of really in your opinion "good" books like these?

Not read it yet. I am currently reading Nausea by Sartre. I just picked it up because it was 3.50 fucking dollars and it was on my wish list.

I can't speak of the sequel, Messiah, except it's on my reading list, so I enjoyed Dune enough for that.

If you like reading about feuding noble houses, deserts, and ways of nomadic/tribal folk then you should like it.

The amount of lore will either grip or repulse you, there is a map, glossary of terms and three appendices.

Is Stephen King a hack whose potboiler books purely belong in the book section of a grocery store or do you feel his works have literary merit?

I ask this because I'm under the impression that most people experience King as adolescents or teenagers, but I first read his books recently as an adult. King's works have made a big impact on pop culture and I was curious enough to see what all the fuss was about. I've come away with mixed feelings and wanted to see what other folks thought.

>a big impact on pop culture

who gives a shit about this?
>>
>>8173600
He pretty much just writes airport fiction and things that belong in grocery stores more than bookstores, yes. I know this because I used to devour his books by the fuckton when I first started reading and had no idea what I actually liked and just sat around libraries reading shit like The Stand all day because his name was one of the few I'd heard of at the time.
>>
>>8173600
>do you feel his works have literary merit
noooope

I find them on the same level as the films that have been made on them. Sometimes, rarely, I am in the mood for some small-town horror shit and that's all he's worth. I only ever got through Talisman and that was rough.

How the hell did Joseph Conrad manage to become one of the greatest English prose writers despite only having learned the language in his twenties?

Is this feat possible to replicate with other languages?
27 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I think it is really hard... but for example, paul celan wrote in german only, even though he avoided speaking in german. And since german is viewed as a really hard language, I think it is possible with every language.
Also, byung-chul han, for example, is a philosopher from south korea. He learned german because he was interested in nietzsche and heidegger and published his works in german only. He is really good. I know, this example is not from poetry, but since with heidegger and nietzsche, language is really important, it kind of fits you question, too.
>>
>>8173530
>one of the greatest English prose writers

He was no doubt a great writer, but his prose is far from that.
>>
>>8173530
I learned English in my early twenties hoping to someday write a novel in it. Some of the things I wrote were well received on /lit/ and elsewhere which gave me boost in confidence and made me pursue the depths of this language even more eagerly. I am aware I still make many mistakes and I completely lack the sensibility which I may never achieve, but writing is about imagination for some as it is about realism for others. If my universe, characters and descriptions are consistent, they can be well received by English readers even if they sometimes seem off.

It is a great thing, bringing something new in a language like this and this generation in particular will have many such writers because so many educated young people are becoming fluent in it.

How do you get motivated to read, lit? I have a problem, I usually pick up a book and then I will read a few pages and I never really feel like finishing it. I have several books to choose from, actually any book I want; I have a kindle so I can just download literally anything. I've read a few books this year, but I had to push myself. The problem is that I think a lot of times the stories I am reading just feel sort of tedious, or I can never find the enthusiasm and intrigue to keep reading a story. How do you keep reading a story and not put it down until the end? I find myself getting so tired when I read books, even though I am on forums all the time and typing and reading; it's not that I have a difficulty reading the words, because I can read just fine. It's a matter of having the attention span I think, and having the will power to keep reading stuff without getting tired. I am not kidding when I say that if I pick up and book and lay down on my bed I fall asleep every single time, which is why I usually try to avoid laying on my bed when I read. I am not kidding, it's like an unbreakable tiredness that I tell myself I will just snap out of, but always makes me fall asleep. What do I do?
