What primarily motivated the bombing of Hiroshima? Was it a desire to prevent an invasion, an attempt to keep the Soviets out of Japan, or the result of bureaucratic momentum after spending tons of resources on developing a superweapon?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Honestly, I've put a lot of thought into this, and I think the answer is they did not put a lot of thought into it.

It's only afterwards that we realized the implications of the bomb. Sure some people involved in the project, for years, who were great and broad thinkers, distant from the day to day grind of the war, had some idea of what they were getting into.

But the A-Bomb was dropped because it was a bomb, and we were deploying every weapon we had at the Japanese at that point. For most involved, there was not a question of 'why' anymore than why we deployed the B-29, or napalm, or radar against the Japanese.
>>
For the same reason we'd been using thousand bomber raids to do the same thing to every other city in Japan.

Plus, maybe to avoid an invasion.

The planned invasion of Kyushu also involved atomic bombs, but it made sense to use a couple as part of the strategic bombing campaign while you were mustering forces for the land invasion, on the off chance it got the high command to see sense.
>>
Invasion. If it took months to dislodge a few thousand soldiers from a 5km island in the pacific, imagine fighting tens of thousands of them on their home turf and dealing with the millions of civilians becoming guirella fighters and suicide bombers. The easiest way was to use the brand new city annihilator to intimidate them into surrender.

So /his/ the year is 392 after the successful conquering of the German tribes by germanicus and the quelling of all rebellious groups by glorious Rome. Their borders to the east are secure due to both excellent diplomacy and the fact that the Mongols never come to prominence in Asia, one day an explorer is granted imperial assistance in the form of 1 legion and a relatively small fleet to go west across the Atlantic in search of a trade route to the mysterious Chinese empire, instead he comes back bearing news of treasure beyond count, and primitive savages willing to defend their wild and unexplored lands. Will Rome decide to conquer this new wilderness? And if so do you think they would succeed? give me some good explanations

I'm taking a course about Europe during the Cold War next quarter, but have only studied it from the American perspective. What events, besides the building and destruction of the Berlin Wall, define Europe during the Cold War?
Also, any good books or material to get me into it?

Historically, why was Florida settled by colonial powers? Even with no real strategic or economic value?

This. Coastal forts were essential.

But why settlers spread out into the swamps and plains of the Turd Peninsula is puzzling.
>>
Florida and Alabama (west florida) were Spanish colonies. And for the most part played a major economic strategic point for the rest of the other spanish colonies and former Spanish colonies. There were transportation treaties set up using these areas as no-man's land. Basically anglo-americans promised the spanish-americans a cheaper trade to europe and asia. However the didn't keep their word and instead it ravaged their trade. The legend is that at night the anglos would go around dressed as the spanish during festivities and kill the spanish colonialists. Many spanish colonialists either left or anglicized their names and changed their faith. The name supposedly means what goes around comes around clan. or a corruption of quoi/que clue clan. They would go around burning evidence and testimony.

Well I think no more than one year should be fully dedicated to your own country's history. There's way too much ancient and world history to cover.

You know you can tell a poster is still pupae or larvae when they post about high school

I'm 23 and doing history at university.

High School will be most peoples only foray into history. So it's important that they get taught the right things, lest they will have no idea of the progress or human, or where they stand in relation to it. I have met people who think we've had cars for 1000 years, and someone once said the Romans existed 20,000 years ago. Basic shit like this can't be excused.

Tell me about the Iranian revolution and Iraq-Iran war era. All my exposure to it has been off film and I'm fairly ignorant, however as far as I've heard movies like Persepolis have a bunch of inaccuracies and it would be obvious that the West would have an anti-Iran bias. Would you say things went for the better or for the worse? Was the Iranian revolution really that popular, and the installment of the Ayatollah something the majority of Iranians wanted?

some ways better, some ways worse

Under the shah, despite the heavy investment from the west and the industrialization, many Iranians remained poor. Following the revolution, despite the fact that political and personal liberties freedoms were just as much if not more severely restricted as before, iran has surprisingly been able to build up its industries and economy to be on par or even better than what the shah was. more people are educated now then under the Shah and despite western embargoes, Iran doesn't really seem to slow down, unlike cuba or north korea.

While not all Iranians at the time of the revolution wanted an Islamic republic, most wanted the shah out. the revolution included marxist and pro democratic forces, but when it was clear that the islamists were the most powerful, their rivals either folded or were purged. Also the invasion by iraq served as an experience to bind the new the government and its people together against a foreign invader, whether they were had supported khomeini earlier or not

If the Shah had stayed in power, he would have died within the next decade or two and his son would probably liberalize the regime under international pressure, and through various spats of corruption and progress would probably be in a similar economic state to today. But the iran of today is what the revolution set out to achieve: a prosperous Islamically ruled nation with the power to project itself in order to fulfill its aims of supporting Shi'a islam as we have seen with its support for Syria or Hezbollah.

OP here
I'm inclined to go with Baptist but I get the impression that they're a bit lightweight. Some traditions should be followed, like fasting for instance.
I basically want a denomination that believes in scripture alone but also follows the traditions taught in the Bible and does not take the Bible 100% literally
