AKG, Big three is how people reffered to HD650, DT880 and K701 when they were some of the best headphones out there, of course later came HD600 and the many versiong of the K701, so you can debate which one fits better i suppose.

I like them alot more now than I know how to pick an amp for any given headphone(ohms law is hard lol). I drove them off the dragonfly there and they sounded fucking horrible and screechy and I imagine they would sound the same way on the E10k(best selling amp with them on amazon) because it can't do 25mw at 250ohm.
On the DAC-X6 they're awesome for what I listen to which is mostly electronically made garbage. All the songs in pic related sound wonderful on them.
They're so polarizing though, some people react with blind hate and disgust at their mention. Advise buying from somewhere with easy returns if you do get them. Seriously, some people have said the treble causes them actual pain but I haven't had that experience at all.

Looking for wireless buds, what would be best for the price? Airpods or the schatzii bullet 2.0 stereo earbuds? Or neither? Budget can be up to about 300 bucks, so not too concerned about pricing. Was also looking at the $130 rowkin buds but they have a lot of bad reviews saying the right bud losses signal rather often, what would you guys recommend? Not an applefag btw, just looking for good wireless buds and the airpods seem to hold up.

In our threads? IEMs as a whole really. They're very rarely suggested or discussed and while yeah big over ears can be more comfortable you can get equal (sometimes superior) SQ at the same price and get mobility.
Also I think BA drivers are some of the best suited ones for modern music because of how fast it is at times
>>
>>61717883
Thanks, I hope the schiit stack will be good enough, from what I've read they are easier to drive than HD650.

This is a reminder that DiPolarDisorder is a shitposting troll who intentionally spreads factually incorrect misinformation such as "hrtf graphs have an inverse relationship with how a headphone should measure," refuses to back up his claims with credible evidence because he cannot and tells anyone who proves him wrong they "can't read." His HRTF claim has been thoroughly debunked by:
https://rinchoi.blogspot.com/2010/05/headphone-equalization.html
https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/headphone-measurements-explained-frequency-response-part-one

Beware the shill
>>
>>61717857
THD measurements are a poor indicator of audibility. Measurements which separate harmonic distortion by 2nd, 3rd, etc. harmonic are far more useful, as it's the odd order harmonics which will be the nasty sounding ones. One shouldn't read too much into THD measurements.
Harmonic distortion is also extremely difficult to hear in the bass region. It's not audible on any of those headphones.

> In our next paper we will show that .01% THD of one type of nonlinear system can be perceived as unacceptable while 10% THD in another example is perceived as inaudible. Even one of these simple examples is sufficient to invalidate THD as a viable metric for discussion of the perception of distortion. Furthermore, 1% THD is not at all the same as 1% IM, but we will show that neither correlates with subjective perception.
>These results supported the skepticism that THD and IMD metrics were poor predictor of subjective perception of sound quality ratings.
tl;dr: You wasted your time making the image in >>61717857 because THD measurements are fairly useless in terms of representing audibility.

It's not possible that a dollar store $1 USB 2.0 extender could negatively affect my dac or is it?
I'm thinking digital means it works or it doesn't and the point of the dac is to take the digital and turn it into analog so it's impossible for it to matter. Kind of like HDMI cables, it works or it doesn't.

>>61718223
You don't have to look to the self-aggrandizing Geddes to find a paper trying to "do THD better". Every few years for the last 80 or so years someone put out a paper trying to do a better job.
You don't even need to look to the journals if you understood the issue properly. There is a colossal amount of evidence against it.

>>61718371
They do. It (non-linear time-invariant distortion) is listed under harmonic distortion.
Characterizing such systems is easy via power series, but still not too realistic other than possible exceptions of certain digital operations.
Most people seem content with this level of modeling though.
>>
You guys ever throw on a secondary pair of headphones that you almost never use and just get totally blown away by them?
I really suggest having a few pairs of headphones if you can afford it.

>No sub bass
>>
>>61719700
Say that the driver is distorting and that you are getting no bass output. If you get a second pair that doesn't work well, then just return them and look elsewhere for planar magnetics. I didn't have any complaints about my pair of 400s but maybe things have changed since then who knows.

Your sources are powerful enough, they're not being underdriven. Something is obviously defective. I'm not bamboozling you either, every reviewer and every graph point to these headphones having incredible bass.

>>

What do you think about the form factor of the LG neckband headsets?

>>61719445
It's not that it is a flat diaphragm, it's that planar dynamics are often designed to minimize leak rather than deliberately introduce it as most conventional coil dynamics do. It's not inherent.

I'm aware that the link says HE-400i. The .pdf itself does not say HE-400i. We cannot assume that the link nor the .pdf is mistaken. We cannot assume it is an HE-400 and we cannot assume it is an HE-400i.
>>
>>61720106
In addition, we cannot assume that anon's pair is faulty even if that's an HE400i measurement. A headphone with flat bass response will sound lighter in the bass than an HD600, which has literally boosted bass from 30 Hz and up. It's entirely reasonable that anon might perceive a headphone with flat bass response as less bassy than an HD600.

I don't have an official source but the general consensus seems to be that when they switched to 2.5mm connectors they also removed a back plate from the driver.

Tyll's typo-word ratio is fairly high for someone who has to serve as editor. It shows the significantly reduced midrange distortion compared to the 400, and significant changes to its design.

>>61720132
Serious question: do you think the HD 600 is bassy?

I asked this question on le reddit too and they said that in this scenario certain soundcards can still add EQ/DSP/Surround options. True or false? I'm with you at the moment, my initial googling led me to believe that when you output to a DAC, you are just transmitting the raw 1s and 0s of the content unaltered.

I have a kwestion -- at one point do you need to pay attention to the cable your are connecting to your headphones? I know normally in the digital world they say "get whatever is cheapest it's just 1s and 0s" but when you're dealing in an analog signal is there a difference?

Bonus: Does a more powerful amp allow you to transmit over a longer cord? What is the typical "max length" a patch cable can be before you start to have degradation?
>>
>>61720837
You don't 'need' it more than amp. Amp is required to power your headphones, get a dac if you need to get rid of electric noise or to get a clearer sound.
>>
>>61720851
Cables is arguably the most important part in an audio setup. I say drop the most money on the most quality wires you can find.
>>
>>61720807
FFS PEOPLE. YOU ALREADY HAVE A DAC. YOU LITERALLY CANNOT LISTEN TO MUSIC WITHOUT A DAC. OH YOU MEAN AN _EXTERNAL_ DAC??????
>>

>>
>>61720717

>>
>>61720851
>>61720851
This. Think of 1s and 0s as people, and when people are unhappy, much like in real life, they refuse to work. The higher the quality the cable, the better the 1s and 0s. Simple as that. The more expensive the product, the higher quality it is; this is always the rule of thumb.
>>
>>61720851
you pay attention to them when you can objectively prove they are the source of an issue

Put a fresh battery in my skullcandy crushers, cranked the bass on them, and smashed the EQ for maximum bass response.

Boy was that a mistake! The crushers almost shook themselves off my head.

I own them too and think they are very good. I just hate the /hpg/ shitposting surrounding them.

They aren't endgame for me though as I like niggerbass

hey /hpg/ - I've had my Sennheiser HD558's for almost 5 years now. They still sound amazing but I'm considering upgrading. Ideally ~$200 but I'd be willing to go up to $300. Opinions?
Would use for everyday listening and DAW playback.

HD600
>>
I read a review saying that the part that connects the Beyerdynamic Custom Studio's cups to the headband is weak and breaks easy.

That's not true, is it?

I ordered a pair of them yesterday.
>>
>>61723809
Just don't twist the cups around like they lay flat a lot or treat your headphones like shit. They'll be fine.
>>
>>61723716
The natural upgrade path is HD600.
Do not go for any HD5xx, as they'd be a sidegrade at best (except the HD580, of course, but the HD600 are likely cheaper at this point).

Thanks, I generally take pretty good care of my shit, I was just worried for a moment that it they were made of some particularly brittle plastic.

So I've got a Dragonfly Black in the mail, since I saw loads of good reviews for it, but now I'm seeing a few reviews saying it really didn't sound all that much better than their phone/computer's built in audio.

Did I get meme'd on?
Please tell me the Dragonfly black at least sounds better than pic related.

1. Water can easily get into the watch case back
2. It looks like a fake IWC pilot chrono watch which is a luxury wristwatch and your fake isn't
3. It's not automatic or mechanical so use your phone instead

I have three good reasons
1. Solid bracelet links not folded crap
2. Sapphire crystal
3. Well at that price point its a bargain for a chronograph if it works. Shit if the functions don't work.

I made this amp back in college. I think tubes make a bigger difference for speakers than headphones, but if the tube amp is well designed that difference is minimal but noticeable. The even order distortion is the main reason, it makes things sound warmer, creates a mid-range "bloom" that can make a stereo image sound full. Some tube amps take this to an absolute extreme basically being mid-centric and having distortion over 2-3%, and in my experience is kind of counterproductive because you lose too much accuracy and it gets muddy fast.

The one I made is a classic push/pull circuit design with el84s. It maxes out at 1% thd at full volume and puts out 15 watts. I was trying to make an amp that had a tinge of tube warmth but not become muddy. To be completely honest I still like my pioneer sx-650 for this little setup on occasions which is solid state, but having the ability to switch it up is nice.
>>
>>61725300
An amp will typically matter far more than a dac. Generally, we recommend people start with a dac+amp like the fulla2, so that they're good on both fronts.
>>
is this ass for $200

Such schiit-hate. My fulla2 is fine, my friends' (2 friends got it too) are fine, most reviews are positive, and so on.
No matter the product and no matter how nice the QC, there's gonna be duds.
>>
My new motherboard has considerable noise coming from the built in jack. I have a receiver I'm using as an amplifier, so I do not need an amp/dac combo. Are there any super cheap but reasonably good external DACs out there (sub-$50)? I just need something to reduce the noise, nothing fancy.
>>
>>61726687
get a normal job
>>
>>61726767
hifimediy 9018
consider the optical version if your motherboard has support
>>
>>61726687
The bigger problem with the fulla 2 is that there are no measurements, and as such you cannot claim it is audibly transparent. A known quantity like the SMSL idea or ODAC which has been measured to be transparent will be a better choice until the fulla 2 is measured.

Automatic HD600 recommendation.
Closest to harman target, this is the open "monitor" go-to for audio work.
>>
>>61728516
>chink amp/dac like DAC X6
Probably, because that specific chink amp is known to have high Zout, and so it should audibly affect FR with low Z headphones.

Schiit Fulla/2

vs

AudioQuest Dragonfly/Red

vs

CEntrance DACPort HD/Slim

which one is best, do you like any of them?

I have the original (first) Fulla and Dragonfly Red, Fulla seems to be worse so far - too much energy, less detail. The most noticeable difference is in soundstage (Dragonfly is amazingly wide). Also, Dragonfly's sound is much more controlled.

//btw, how does Roland Mobile UA (UA-M10) sound? some reviewers seem to love it while others hate it.
