Post your component list, rate other anons', and ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Assemble your parts list; built-in price comparisons by vendor and a compatibility filter.

Kaby Lake has been released! Skylake is depreciated if corresponding chips are similarly priced (e.g., i5 7600K vs i5 6600K)!
>Some motherboards will have a one-click, 5GHz on air OC button that works for 80% of i5 7600Ks
>100 series chipsets (Z170, B150, ect) don't work out of the box with Kaby Lake
>Z series chipsets have an "Enhanced Turbo", which allows all cores to run at the highest single core boost clockspeed (works for Skylake CPUs as well)
>Pentiums now have hyperthreading, and are thus the new default budget / entry level gaming CPUs
>Pentium G4560 is the best price / perf four thread CPU on a modern platform
>All Kaby Lake CPUs work natively with 2400MHz DDR4 memory
>Do not underestimate the impact of fast (>2400, e.g, 3000MHz) RAM in conjunction with a Z series chipset, which often provides as much of a performance boost as a CPU overclock

>To install Win7 on a Kaby Lake system, use a board with a 100 series chipset that has been flashed with the Kaby Lake update. All the normal caveats for 100 series / Skylake Win7 installation apply.

Anon thinks i3's will hold worth. So they are worth using for a new build instead of anything with more cores. As you'd be able to reclaim some cash from the secondhand market.
>>58724182

>>58729935
I don't think anyone is waiting for Vega except people who just really want a Team Red gfx card.

New i3-6100 owners got BTFO'd though.

At this point I'd wait for Ryzen if I were buying a new platform. Having said that, buying the G4560 and expecting a decently priced LGA1151 upgrade path is reasonable.

>>58729985
It's a 2c / 4t CPU, which is fine. The only ones you don't want are 2c / 2t, but even that would be fine for CSGO.

>>58730001
It's a fairly low wattage chip, retard. A cheap 212 EVO or Cryorg h7 will be fine

>>58730019
>$30
I don't know what the fuck you're smoking. A Haswell i3 4330 sells for $75 shipped, which makes fucking sense because the the $75 Pentium G4560 will currently beat it.

So yes, any Kaby Lake i3 will hold 2/3s of its value. But if you buy the i3 7100 the used market may laugh at you and ask why you didn't get a G4560, which will hold most of its value.

General consumers don't really spend much over $70 to $150 on a case nowadays. As much I would like an ultra-premium aluminum case, I don't really see the point in spending that much on a case that doesn't have easy-access dust filters or easy expandability.

Budget builds generally don't use K-series processors and Z-series chipsets. Unless you plan to overclock, go with a B-series chipset and a non-K processor.

Your SSD isn't available, and isn't added to the final price. You should avoid 120GB drives anyway, as 240GB are cheap enough to compete with them.
WD drives have some pretty appalling failure rates after three years of use. And you can get a 2TB drive for like $5-$10 more.

Stop paying for Windows. Instructions on pirating Windows 10 are literally on the installgentoo wiki.

If you're going with Z270, get 3000MHz RAM. The small to non-existent price difference is worth it.
>>
>>58731107
Depends on your resolution / refresh rate. If 1080p 60Hz then 470/480/1060. CPU is still good.

>Budget builds generally don't use K-series processors and Z-series chipsets. Unless you plan to overclock, go with a B-series chipset and a non-K processor.

It's a budget build in the sense that I want to future proof the CPU. Overclocking can overcome bottlenecks, hopefully lasting me for the next 5-7 years. Do you think I might be better served by an 7500? I play CPU intensive games rather than GPU intensive games. I wouldn't go for a huge overclock since I need this to last (probably aim for under 75c under load) so maybe I should save some money and go locked?

>Your SSD isn't available, and isn't added to the final price. You should avoid 120GB drives anyway, as 240GB are cheap enough to compete with them.

As for the SSD, yes it's available. Check newegg. The difference between a 120gb and 250gb is about 50CAD. That's a lot for me, but I am considering stepping it up. What alternative to WD do you recommend? My current rig has run a 500gb WD for 7 years, no issues so they're alright in my books.

>Stop paying for Windows. Instructions on pirating Windows 10 are literally on the installgentoo wiki.

I live in a police state and if I pirate Windows the gubmint might come get me. Maybe not. I'm mulling it over.

>If you're going with Z270, get 3000MHz RAM. The small to non-existent price difference is worth it.

CAS timings on 3000 RAM are usually 16, I can get 2400 dirty cheap with 14 CAS. I don't know if I want to fuss with RAM overclocking, it seems like a pain in the ass. I'll look into it though.
>>
>>58731317
3000 is way better, and it's as easy as ticking one setting in BIOS
>>
>>58731317
If you're actually intending to overclock, go with the K. There's just a lot of builds where people assume that the unlocked processors are the starting point and end up spending much more than they have to.

The best alternative to WD would be Hitachi. Ironically, Seagate is also pretty good as long as you stay below 3TB.
If you're trying to save money, go with either WD or Seagate, but know that you may have to replace it in a few years.

CAS timings don't mean as much as they used to with such high frequencies. You're going to see a much bigger performance increase with the frequency than the hit with two ticks in CAS.
With the Z270 boards, there's almost no overclocking to deal with. Just pop in a processor that supports XMP (the 7500k does this), and enable it in the BIOS.

Ten-four, i'll start looking for some cheap 3000. The only reason i'm going K is because this CPU needs to be top boss for the next 5 years at least. I can replace the GPU later but the CPU needs to last. Hitachi is way outside my price range, i'll have to take a chance on WD or Seagate, although I was under the impression that Seagate is worse than WD?
>>
>>58731493
Seagate used to be worse than WD, but they really stepped up their game. I still wouldn't trust either brand with anything over 2TB though, the potential for failure is too high for me.

Yeah I've had issues with SLI but I'm going to probably purchase another 1080 down the line anyway. Yeah 850 is more than enough but for this PSU I got it for a good price so why not get the extra wattage.
>>
>>58732429

So if I managed to find a good priced used 1440p monitor, would it be worthwhile?

Do you have any sources talking about it running too hot? All the review I read only talked about how much it's eat up energy and is a bit on the noisy side depending on the luck of the draw.
>>
>>58732493
"Hot" means that it eats 300W. But no, still not a good deal. Too little VRAM for 1440p. The only good 1440p card is the GTX1070
>>
>>58732534

Alright, thank you.
>>
>>58732544
Also there was a deal for a 480 for around $137 albeit with a rebate too so if you can find snag one for around that $150-160 that'll save you quite a bit but I wouldn't pay more than that.

I'm saving up to build a new computer since my current one is ~5 years old and has had multiple hardware failures. I know everything that I plan on getting except for the case. I was hoping /g/ would give me some recommendations.

Here's what I'm looking for.
-As dust/cat hair free as possible.
-As quiet as possible using multiple additional air fans.
-Mid to full tower.
-No doors/panels to move on the front to turn it on or to access the optical drive/front IO
-Has no tempered glass panel, those are a meme and just a gimmick to increase the price.
-Cable management is a plus but not required, I'll be getting a modular PSU.

I give zero shits about how it looks. I want a functional, quiet, cool machine. Thanks for any input.

Hey people, I'm bit off the loop on the latest news on CPUs/GPUs. I'm thinking of throwing a build together to run some virtual machines(nothing existing, 2 or 3 KVM guest OSes for school purposes) and I'd think I'd be willing to spend roughly 500 - 700 euros(ballpark estimate) to it. Only another requirement is that I'd like to be able to run two monitors(nothing major, just 1920x1050). Could I get away with latest-gen i5, or should I spring for i7? Can I get away with using Intel Integrated graphics, or should I just get cheap GPU for that?

Let me elaborate. I already have a good rig with i5 and 1070. This one is for my younger brother for his birthday. I ain't shitting money and he is too young to have his own cash so I wanted to buy him a gift since all he has right now is some ancient i3 and 760 gtx.

It was supposed to be a mini itx rig (that's why I opt for mini EVGA or Zotac Pascal cards, as far as I know AMD has nothing like that). 470 RX cost literally as much as 480RX and 1060 4gb/3gb versions in here so buying them just feels wrong. Good 480 rx non ref cards are more expensive so if I had to choose between 480 rx and 1060 mini I will go for mini simply because of the specific build. I sure as heck won't buy a reference 480 in such confined space. As for DDR4 - z270 are twice as expensive as most expensive b150/h110 mobo. I've heard you can also oc ddram with b150 although I need to read more about it.

I personally contacted Asrock support. It's fucking nothing, because you're playing the lottery. Even DRAM modules with the same P/N cannot be guaranteed by Asrock to be overclockable. Basically, if it so happens that the board can overclock the RAM, it will tell you so. To quote support, it's an "Easter Egg feature"

The follow up email read:
Hi Matt,

I got replied form HQ as below.

This feature is belonging to “Easter egg feature”, and it’s not guaranteed on all Samsung and Kingston.

It depends on the chip inside the DRAM.

If our BIOS detect the chip is able to support, it would automatically show the option up.

Because the DRAM vendor may not use the same chip on all same P/N DRAM, we may not provide the detailed P/N for reference.

Thanks for your understanding.

>>58734311

That's kind of fucked. The information doesn't at all indicate a direct correlation between capacity and reliability. Seagate and Hitachi HDDs larger than 6TB use SMR, which is probably the worst possible kind of drive for data center operations due to its nature. With proper use (as a write-once/read-many drive), they can last quite a while but they still have worse endurance than regular PMR drives. I'm guessing the reason why the 8TB drives' unreliability plummeted was because BB realized this and stopped using them for write-heavy applications. Same goes with the 5TB Seagates which are also SMR drives (6TB are still PMR, as far as I can tell).
There is also no differentiation between 5900rpm drives and 7200rpm drives. 5900rpm drives are inherently longer lasting due to less wear on the platter bearings and heat up far less than 7200rpm drives.

I give up, I bought this PC but I read somewhere that the pump is supposed to be plugged into the cha fan and that the pump will break otherwise. As pic related shows, nothing is plugged into it. It works but it makes a weird roaring noise even at idle, and it gets slightly louder when I do shit. This is my first watercooling thing (I think it's a h75).

Please someone help me, where are you supposed to plug in the pump?

Blowers always have lower CFM compared to similiarly-sized axial fans - it's just an inherent attribute of the design. They partly make up for it by having much higher static pressure ratings, which makes them ideal for pushing air through long/dense fin stacks, where axial fans would choke.

>>
>>58740476
I didn't see later comments, what would you change personally? I don't really give a fuck about gimmicky features on motherboards etc. As long as it is stable and consistent in performance then that's my priority. I was going to go with something 2011-3 based but with the virtualisation and storage being offloaded elsewhere, I don't see where there's (significant) room for performance improvements for what I'm using it for.
>>
>>58740429
You may as well just spring the extra 30 bucks and get the i7 7700k
>>
>>58740527
First of all, why no 7700K or Xeon? Even if you don't plan on insane OC, use auto OC.
Mobo and RAM are standard, nothing special to see there, you could go for 2400 RAM.
GPU.. personally i'd get the 8GB version. Your coolers/fans are good, but absolutely overkill since you won't OC.
M.2 is good but expensive, which is why i don't understand why you don't go with a better build in general since you can afford that 500GB M.2.
Now, i think this has been said a million times before and you should take this advice or don't but stop spamming this.
>>
>>58740486
H100i is overkill, no SSD is masochrism and RX480 8G > 1060 6G, should also be cheaper, also switch the Seagate for a Toshiba P300, costs like 61 bucks on amazon.uk.
Rest looks solid, imo the case is an overpriced meme, but that's subjective.

The storage is there because I'll actually benefit a hell of a lot from the stupendously high input/output performance. As for the RAM, what benefit would I see in programs like Photoshop and Lightroom? Am I right in thinking that with higher rated memory comes increased latency?

>no 7700k
I'm not really bothered about overclocking and I don't see the benefit for £45. I had a 4600k way back when and that overclocked to 4.5GHz (didn't seem all too significant, from what I remember)
>no xeon
No new rendition, more expensive than the 7700, and no support for ECC on non-2011 as far as I am aware - what's the purpose of xeon on non-2011?

>8Gb RX 480
I can see why you'd say that... as far as gaming is concerned I doubt I will go over 4Gb of VRAM, by the time I do, I will have a new card. Although... I should question how much I can make use of VRAM in Lightroom, I'd not thought of that up until now.

No idea, i don't use those programms, but in general if the task is CPU intensive you profit overproportionally from faster RAM and the price difference between 2133 and 2400 is virtually non existent.

Mobo needs BIOS flash to work with Kelvin Lake, get 3000/3200 RAM, HGST is fine but 7K2000 is fucking ancient, switch to Toshiba P300, EVGA 1080 is housefire, rest is fine.

>>58742260
SSD is shit, there are better HDDs out there, case is overpriced, 450W is a bad decision and check the prices, seems to expensive, even for australia.
>>
>>58742251

if you're not overclocking them drop the CPU and mobo
try not using a budget HSF
get 2x4 ram
better SSD
less intensive GPU
>>
>>58742312

The SSD and HDD are perfectly fine.

450w is all that's needed as there will be no overclocking, and in terms of price it's the best deal in Australia as the rest of them are non-modular chinkshit.

Thanks for showing you don't know what you're talking about.
>>
>>58742324

also don't bother flashing the mobo - get a different one

flashing causes the cpu to overheat like a motherfucker because kaby is shit
>>
>>58742251
3000MHz RAM
1070

>>58742234
>Take a look at this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rN4X3F
It's OK but an RX470 and 240GB SSD are such better value

>>58742031
It's fine

>>58742015
Get a Pentium G4560 (extreme improvement)
Either have to have someone flash the H110 BIOS with the Kaby Lake update or get a B250 mobo
GTX1050 instead of r9 370. AMD sucks for emulation.

>>58742006
>"hd graphics" you'll most probably will never use
For my next build I'm going to to set up a GNU/Linux machine with a Windows VM (hardware passthrough), so I'll need a second gfx card or integrated gfx.

No. SanDisk SSD Plus is bottom tier, HDD is mediocore and there are better options for both, idk about the availability in australia though.
>450w is all that's needed
No. You're already hitting 390W under max load, keep in mind that capacitors degrade over time, thus rendering the PSU less effective.
PSUs also have peak efficiency around 50-60%, you should get a 500-550W PSU.

>Thanks for showing you don't know what you're talking about.
Comming from such a tech illiterate retard, lol. Enjoy wasting your money and having blown capacitors after no more than 3 years.

>It's OK but an RX470 and 240GB SSD are such better value
True but that anon has budget of $400-500 and that build is already at the limit wirh $499.

Any amendments before I start throwing money at this?
>>
>>58742461
64gb of ECC registered RAM paired with 2x 8-core xeon processors for under $2000 would be pretty damn good for video editors and the like. I don't really see anything wrong with his build.

Those max and idle temps are high, right?

looks fine

Will the "1070 is good for 1440p/144hz" meme die already?

He's not going to get enough juice to make it worth whatever monitor he has. You're putting him at risk at falling below 60fps now and in the near future.

oh you're mad because it's true?

Yes that's not normal. What did you do with it?

yeah, try changing thermal paste

hahaha wtf

Any comments?

I'm not from the US so some of the picks might look weird, eg. those ASUS 1070s are the cheapest ones here.
6800K just doesn't seem worth it since it's $80+ more than the 5820K here and UV400 SSD because I don't need anything faster.

Well I plan to be using Windows. I'm not Tech Savy enough to run Linux yet. Also, since I won't be the only the person using that computer, I don't want to go to the hassle of having to install missing drivers or fixing whatever's wrong cause I was too much of a noob to properly configure something. And I don't think I'm the only case of an integrated graphics being of no use. Why isn't there an option on the market for people in similar situation to mine?
>>
>>58742659

I honestly don't see anything wrong with it except for the cooler.

Where are you getting the data to support your claim that 6TB HDD and 8TB HDD are worse?
>>
>>58742539
True, even the 1080 cuts it short on some titles. If I were looking into buying a card for the 1440p 144hz meme, I'd wait for the 1080 ti launch.
>>
>>58742678
Yep. Did you see where Luke from LTT tested all different sized amounts of thermal paste? A little more is better.
>>
>>58742828
I'm not saying that they're worse overall, it's that 8TB Seagates and 6TB/8TB Hitachis use SMR. SMR does not work very well or very long in a typical data center heavy write environment. Google it.
