PC Building General: Digital Portable Chronometer Engineering Special Edition.

Post your component list, rate other anons', and ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price or to improve specs or build quality.

Assemble your parts list; built-in price comparisons by vendor and a compatibility filter.
https://pcpartpicker.com

Have a budget, but don't know where to start? This will recommend you a parts list based on price.
http://www.logicalincrements.com/
>Subsitute a G4560 with 2400MHz RAM for the i3-6100 in any build; same performance, half the price.
>Consider substituting an i5 7500 for the i3 in any RX470/480 or GTX 1060 tier build
>Consider stock fan+heatsink for any i3 or locked i5 build without a Z mobo
>Consider a B150/B250 or H110 mobo for any i3 build
>Add a 240GB SSD to the "Great" tier build

General build advice including chipset compatibility, power supply advice, Windows activation information.

Swap the Roswill for a EVGA or SeaSonic and you'Re good to go, i don't trust Roswill, at all.
Maybe add a Cryorig M9i for $19 so that you don't have to listen to the Intelâ„¢ F-35 breaking the sonic barrier.

Thanks for the suggestions, lads. Incorporating the proper RAM into by build. I'll think more about the MoBo, I'm personally having trouble finding one that doesn't annoy me with all it's LED GAMER BS.

>>58742539
I don't know, I'm starting to think he may be in the right. I've been out of building for a while (coming off an 8 year budget med-tier build). I'd certainly get more out of the 1080, but if I'm not going to max 144hz for new AAA, will it be worth it to me?
Since I played many years at Ethiopian-tier 1600x900 before being gifted a 1080p that my hardware wasn't quite ready for, I'd probably shit my pants no matter an 1080 or 1070.

My best course of action may be to get the 1070 and then upgrade later.
Betheshit is my guilty pleasure, and a 1070 should be more than enough for ENB + High Texture.

Tough decisions all around though, so I'll probably ponder about it for hours on end.
>>
Can someone help me build a pc to play games on for a friend of mine. I don't know much so help would be appreciated.

Rosewill Capstone series is Superflower which is good shit, don't knock /everything/ by them.
>>
repostan from old thread

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7ZMP9W

Any comments?

I'm not from the US so some of the picks might look weird, eg. those ASUS 1070s are the cheapest ones here.
6800K just doesn't seem worth it since it's $80+ more than the 5820K here and UV400 SSD because I don't need anything faster.

Also, I will be using Windows 7 so DX12 is irrelevant.
>>
Reposting from last thread.

>>58742397
>For my next build I'm going to to set up a GNU/Linux machine with a Windows VM (hardware passthrough), so I'll need a second gfx card or integrated gfx.

Well I plan to be using Windows. I'm not Tech Savy enough to run Linux yet. Also, since I won't be the only the person using that computer, I don't want to go to the hassle of having to install missing drivers or fixing whatever's wrong cause I was too much of a noob to properly configure something. And I don't think I'm the only case of an integrated graphics being of no use. Why isn't there an option on the market for people in similar situation to mine?
>>
>>58742910
nope, wrong.

I try to fucking educate you 1070lets and instead you just breed more of your kind.

YOU NEED A 1080 TO STAY VIABLE IN 1440p.

Are you really so poor you can't afford a 1080 over a 1070?
1070 is DED for 1440p. Get 1080 or live in regret for the rest of your life
>>
>>58742974
I should probably add that I'm an avid overclocking enthusiast and will fuck around with the BIOS for hours and hours until I find the highest 24/7 clock, and will go upwards of 1.6v for a validation.
>>
>>58742910
>having trouble finding one that doesn't annoy me with all it's LED GAMER BS
Welcome to the world of Kelvin Lake and Union Point. There has never before a generation of mobos with such a disgustingly cancerous (((gaming))) marketing.
MSI PRO mobos have the least LED/trash in them at the moment. They aren't the best but should be enough for the standard consumer.

>>58742931
Didn't know, but that one PSU isn't the Capstone. Speaking of Super Flower, EVGA G3 and Super Flower Leadex II make me wet.

There's nothing to refute. 1070 is capable of hitting over 100fps at 1440 for any modern game when overclocking. If not you'll always be above 60 for any game.

1080 is overkill for now, you're better off waiting for 12gb cards.

1070 is perfectly fine for staying over 60fps in 1440p.

Not every game has to be played on Ultra. Turn down a couple settings, see no graphical difference, and enjoy your massive FPS boost.

Anyway the 1070 is the second best graphics card on the market, so of course it's going to be great for 1440p. It's not like the 20% increase in performance by moving to the 1080 actually means much. If the 1070 can't do 1440p, nothing can.
>>
Is the Kaby Lake pentium meme legit? Can it play skyrim in 60fps?
>>
>>58744086
Try to get windows free from school or just an inactivated version.

Remember to enable xmp to utilize that 3200mhz ram.

You shouldn't have any issue with using kaby lake on a z170.

Try getting a gpu that's "used-like new" from amazon. It'll be new but open box or just have an ugly box, nothing wrong with the gpu itself. Got myself a gtx 1070 for $350 that way in early December. Also try to see if evga or seasonic have a sale on any of their psus. Never buy a used psu though. And test it before using it with a paper clip to see if it'll power your system before installing everything in a case.

so i'm just beyond the point of no return for my build

bought the case, filled it with a phemon x4 980 and a gtx660ti, now it's on to bigger things. bought the 1080, it's working beautifully, and i have a few fans to complement the 3 fans that came with the case.

next will be the mobo/cpu/cooler/RAM, then the monitor/mouse/keyboard, then some LED fans to make it interesting.

then i can finally switch from Xbox one to PC gaming for good.

Hello /g/ I venture forth from the board of chinese girl cartoons in need of your help in building a new gaymen PC from the ground up that will make my wallet blush.

I've been hanging around logical increments, the install gentoo wiki, pc-part picker, and every odds and ends review site but it's time to stop lying to myself that I know what I'm doing. Especially since my current computer is a used medical computer with faulty RAM busses, scavenged GTX 980 TI from a friend’s upgrade, side door taped on, and 400 gig harddrive hanging out the side.

I live in Murrica and my budget is ±2000$. On the most basic level I’d like to finally be able to play videogames with all their fanciest bells and whistles and hopefully future proof a little bit as vidya seem to be taking up more space and resources every damn month. If it’s feasible I’d want to keep the 980 TI, have two monitors in the finished product, and some amount of SSD storage.
I'm sorry if asking all this is frowned upon.
>>
Should I buy a sata M.2 ssd or a regular ssd, I can't afford any of the pci-e ones (at least none that don't have bad user reviews). What a the drawbacks of m.2?
>>
>>58745569
>What a the drawbacks of m.2?
You lose TWO SATA ports, even if it's just a SATA M.2
The PCIe/NVMe M.2 take away four lanes of PCIe 3.0 from either your southbridge (B150 and higher Skylake or later) or the CPU's lanes.
>>

Sata ports probably won't be an issue since my mobo has 6, but what will losing pci-e lanes do?

So I just found out my display driver was not updated or something of the sort, because I was getting a terrible framerate in the new resident evil with the Rx 480 8 gb

I reinstalled the driver and I got a smooth 60, but why didn't the Crimson relive software update that for me to begin with? The software is meant for that purpose right? How do I know whether I need more driver updates for my build? I don't want to accidentally be running old drivers for the stuff, I just wonder if the mobo manufacturer (msi) has a driver auto detect tool
>>
>>58745705
>I build PCs thinking parts can't be upgraded at a later time

With Sapphire's Fury Nitro at $280, even the 1070 looks overpriced. It handles DX12 better, and is about 10% slower than a reference 1070 in DX11 titles.

>>58745198
The reference 1060 is a lot better than the reference 480. If we're talking about aftermarket cards, the good ones are close enough now that it barely matters. Overall, the 1060 is still slightly faster in more titles than the 480 is, but most users in the market for cards at the price are going to be playing at a resolution where it doesn't matter anyway. Basically, what it boils down to is that the 480 is a better card if you will use Freesync, and the 1060 is a better card otherwise. A year from now, the 480 will probably be faster, but there will be faster cards than either by then for less, so that doesn't really matter. Neither card really handles 1440p well, and playable 4k is out of the question in anything demanding.

If you're looking for light gaming, you'll still benefit from a GPU.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4DgdvV
I went ahead and modified your list slightly to be more current, and added a mid-range GPU that should be relevant for a few years.

Tip: Don't buy Windows. Especially Windows 7. It's piss easy to pirate and there's literally no downside.
Compare the checkums on the wiki page here
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Windows_7#SHA1_Checksums
with the torrent downloads here
http://mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net/
to download your preferred version of Windows. I recommend Professional 64-bit.

I have an MSI board and they have a BIOS Flashback feature where you can update the BIOS without even needing to turn the system on.

You will need 1 USB formatted with a FAT32 file system, you will need to dump the ROM on it, and you will need to connect the motherboard to the power supply and use the USB drive in a specific USB slot. You press a button on the notherboard and you can flash your BIOS without needing to turn on the PC.

I have this motherboard: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/msi_z170a_gaming_m7/4.htm and the flashback feature is a fucking lifesaver.

I understand that, but considering the fact that i'm probably not going to upgrade anything on this build for at least 3 years, and that i'm going to be running games at 1440p, does it not make more sense to go with the best current combination for the budget that i have?

I previously owned a TUF mobo that was perfect for the job. Stable moderate OC, never had any issues. I move my desktop between houses more often than the average person, so supposedly being durable is an argument that works for me.

Jet has i5-6400 for $153.
You can buy Z170 mobo for $90-100. Roughly $250. + $30 Hyper212 CPU = $280.

Your CPU + Mobo costs ~$275.

3.4Ghz is what you get with i5-7500. Meanwhile with i5-6400, you can push it to 4.5Ghz @ 1.3v stable and <50-60C on full load with Hyper212.

That's ~34% increase in CPU clock for virtually same price, with better motherboard.

>MY MOM TOLD ME YOU CAN'T OVERCLOCK LOCKED SKYLAKE

RX 480 edges over 1060 these days due to driver efficiency, hardware power and transition towards more DX12/Vulkan titles.

$250 on 1060 is wasted compared to same priced or cheaper RX 480 8GB. Not just in price but also in performance.

just trying to keep is as close to your initial total cost as possible

you can up the mobo if you want, but if you're not going nuts with the overclcoking ,I wouldn't bother spending too much more on a mobo unless sound quality is a big deal to you

>just trying to keep is as close to your initial total cost as possible

I see. So my options are either to get the i7 (and slightly faster ram?) and keep my original build as it is having the option to OC a bit more, or cut the budget down on mobo / cooler / case, get the i7 and go for a small OC?

would a GTX 1050 Ti paired with a G4560 ever consume more than 150/160W of power at a gaming load? I know Intel's specified 54W TDP isn't exactly the maximum it will go, so I'm accounting for some extra 10W on the processor here despite the odds of it going over 54W being slim; however the 1050 Ti will most likely always stay around the promised 75W.

So 75+65 = 140
ITX motherboard + 5W
m.2 SSD +5W
RAM +3W
a couple of usb 3 devices +5W
Total: 158W

is this a reasonable estimate? Just curious if a system like this would hold up with a picopsu

got a 6 years old mid-range GPU in my prebuilt Dell from 2011 which has a nice CPU but that's it. Should I get a cheap rx460 (170$) to last a few years and then get a whole new rig or should I drop more money now to get rx480 and a new psu+case 450$+? It seems like a nobrainer to pay not even 70$ (CAD) more to go from 460 to rx480 but then I have to change my PSU, so why not get a new case and an SSD while I'm at it.

I only play in 1080p and I dont mind not getting top ultra on everything but would like to do high settings for a bit. I'm used to disable shadows and AA anyway.
>>
>>58750757
>ITX motherboard + 5W
No. More like 20 W. I'm pretty sure the CPU will stay under 54 W though. And you won't be seeing a situation where your GPU and CPU both draw their maximum power, unless you're running intelburntest and furmark at the same time. It might be okay with a 160 W picopsu, but I wouldn't count on it.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a 990 chipset board for my AM3+. I've got the Gigabyte 970a-ds3p (pic) right now and overclocking is a bitch on this thing. I think the VRM's are limiting me from going past 4.5 GHz as my multipliers get throttled down to x7 (from x20) as my peak temps on my CPU are 47c. As you can see, the CPU is only being supplied with a 4+1 phase connection, so if I get a mobo with beefier VRM's and 8 pin will I be able to achieve more out of my overclock? Any recommendations?

What's a solid fan to stick on this? I'm using an i5 6600k and a Corsair 500R chassis.

I've heard of Cryorig H7, 212 EVO and Noctua fans in particular. Is there something that comes out on top for any particular reason?

Would really appreciate any help on this cause I don't trust stock coolers which is what I'm forced to use for now.

Noctua's DH14/DH15 are probably the best air coolers on the market. The only downside is their shit ugly fan colors, and that they're massive.
I hear the Cryorig H5 Ultimate is close to those Noctua ones. Perhaps find some comparisons on Youtube.

Then the DH 15 is probably the best bet. Make sure you'll have enough RAM clearance, though. Like I said, the thing is massive.

Noctua colors are mellow as fuck bro. It's just that they don't go with anything.

Thinking about getting an H440 and painting it beige and brown.
