Gateron blues are said to be smoother and clicker than Cherry MX blues. Not sure if it will be any help but I currently have MX blues and I'm expecting to receive some Gat blue switches either as early as next week or as late as the week after.
>>
>GMK >Terminal_ is running still, $159 for a ton of layouts covered

Ugh, I want it, but I still have Godspeed coming, and I'm not sure if I'm going to prefer SA over Cherry. I already had to sell my DSA kit because of how much I hated the profile.

How'd I do?

I don't get RAMA's stuff. It's flashy and super expensive. Is the build quality really that nice?

Kind of a similar question but just Gateron vs Cherry in general.
When watching typing tests of gaterons on youtube, they seem like they have more "clack" but in a bad way, compared to "thock" of MX switches. That's when comparing the same type of switch on same type of keycap plastic.
Can anyone confirm this? I feel like they give off a cheap sound to them.
I want to get blacks but not sure whether to go MX or Gateron.
>>

I had a HHKB before but I sold it because muh rubber dome but when I built my custom cherry board I also programmed it in HHKB layout.
It's really great once you spend a whole 2 minutes getting used to it

What brand other than ducky is good.. Or is ducky the best? I was looking at buying a One but they're sold out for the next couple of months.
>>
>>58456205
That's because many of these YouTube sound test videos for Gaterons are done on cheap $40 chink boards. Watch every video you can find for a switch and you'll see how much the board itself and the keycaps can affect how a switch sounds like.
>>
>>58456701
I'd say Ducky is the best till you get to the $200+ keyboard range,

Replace the switch if you are able.

I guess somebody would tell you to oil it, but lubricating petroleum with petroleum really doesn't do anything, and using a dry film lubricant isn't a great idea around contacts.

Build number 1 is designed with portability and silence in mind. Inspired by white Poker 3, I decided to go for a white + sky blue theme. If it ends up working out for its purposes, I'll probably end up taking this one on the go.

Build manifest:
- Satan GH60 PCB £34
- Aluminium plate with Costar stabilisers in silver £18
- Acrylic case in white £13
- White + sky blue PBT keycaps (blank) £19
- Gateron Reds 65pc £18
- White LEDs 100pcs (not sure if I'll keep them on) £0.70

GMK vim themed accesory pack group buy coming soonâ„¢.
http://www.mechkeys.io/product/gmk-vimcaps
>>
>>58465759

holy-sheet, are you paying GMK's exorbitant tooling cost for each of those? Last I checked they wanted close to 800Euro per custom legend. That's $6400 right there. You'd need to sell 1000 sets at $10 a pop just to break even.
>>
>>58465847
The arrow/hjkl keys is existing tooling, they're in GMK Terminal.
>>
>>58465847
Unless I'm mistaken none of those are custom molds that didn't exist before.
>>
>>58465859

Well that's swell. Not a fan of the arrows on the top, would prefer just side printed, but GMK quality can't be knocked.

>>58465861

Even the ugly Vim logo mold for 2 key sizes? I guess enough people would want this to cover the cost of a mold or two. I'd buy it for the HJKL keys at least.
>>
>>58462726

The build quality is meh, they're flimsy boards. For the price you can get a very solid non-backlit TKL from Filco or KUL.
>>
>>58466175
Now that I look around, the two vim keys are probably new for GMK. The only other vim keys I can find are either SA, DSA, or DCS profile.

i love the compact 60% keyboards visually. but how the hell do you use those on a regular basis? to paste in a urxvt terminal you need shift+insert. to scroll up and down in irssi you need page up + page down buttons. to switch to a different tty you need alt+shift+f1 or f2 or whatever.

Hey guys, my 6 year old keyboard's keys are finally starting to give out so I guess it's time for an upgrade, would rather do it right this time than get buyer's remorse again.

1) looking to stay under $150 if possible
2) in USA
3) cherry I guess? I mostly use it for gaming (twitch shooters all the way to city sims) and spouting my opinion on a weeb imageboard. Don't know or have an opinion on most switches so I'm open to ideas.
4) ANSI
5) my current form factor is 100%, but I'd be interested in trying 80% if I could get a better product at my pricepoint.
6) I like a backlight but it's not a dealbreaker one way or the other
7) currently using a very aged Razer Lycosa, it was alright but the backlight frequently went out on its own and I've since educated myself on how cheap Razer products are. Only reason I'm guessing it only lasted this long is because I take care of my shit. Would love something with a little more response if someone is familiar with the Lycosa.

Thanks for the help, just want to get a good product with my money.

thanks, this is really under budget

do you advise red/blue/black/etc for the cherry switches? I also to a fair amount of writing on this thing.
>>
>>58469403
Not that guy, but in my experience blue/clear are the best multi-purpose switch. Black's are hard to type on and reds are even worse.
>>
>>58469403
rubber domes are tactile and have about 60g of force required to press them down. If you want no tactile feedback and a lighter switch then reds would be my suggestion, or blacks if you want something as heavy as a rubber dome. If you want a nice and tactile switch then clears would be the best choice. I prefer lots tactility in my keyboard so I went with blues. Greens are even heavier so you could go for those
>>
>>58469403
Don't buy reds.

Blacks are the linear if you want that.

If you can stand noise, get green.

If you don't want the noise but do think you would enjoy some feedback, i would highly recommend clears. I type on them all day and game on them in the evening
>>
>>58469436
>Black's are hard to type on

>>58469497

>>
>>58469403
>are you a tryhard gamer?
If yes, get reds. Else:

>do you care about noise?
If no, get blues. Else:

>are you a heavy/light typist?
If heavy, get clears. Else browns. Browns are shit, but I doubt you'll be able to tell the difference.

Anyways, the main reason for choosing TKL isn't cost, but ergonomics. You're better off sticking to full size imo. Something like Ducky Shine 5.
>>
>>58469533

Blue or brown?
>>
>>58469534
I'm glad you bring that up, because due to my current setup desk space is at a premium. The lycosa is too fucking big (bigger than most other full-size kbds). I might be better off with the TKL; I cn't even remember the last time I used my numpad other than for FFXI back in the day.
>>
>>58469579
neither
>>
>>58469403
Look up Matias Quiet Click switch if you want a quiet tactile that isn't shitty gritty browns. Alps are just a much smoother switch IMO.

Keycaps are pretty much impossible to find though if you're into ricing your keyboard.
>>

Then you can either get >>58469311 or KBParadise V80 Matias Quiet Click like >>58469591 said. Or if you care about LEDs, get Ducky One TKL RGB.

The V80 Matias QC has a tendency to have key chatter though (from my experience), but apparently that's due to excess grease that's easily cleaned.

Do I need a 30% keyboard?
>>
>>58469616
memebranefag pls go
>>
>>58469645
the chatter is real, just sent my board in for the second time for a repair, when it works it's nice though.
>>
>>58469644
The ping on Alps switches bothers me a lot more than the wobble on Matias.
>>
>>58454379
Do I need a 1% keyboard? Do everything via modifier?
>>
>>58469686
Indeed. That was literally the first time I encountered key chatter in my entire life. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat if I knew they fixed it completely.
>>
>>58469700
>implying Matias doesnt ping at all
>>
>>58469709
there was a firmware update a few months after they came out that fixed 90% of the chattering, but I always have a couple that are persistant. Pushing around on the stem can get them to stop for a while but fuck that.

My old Dell AT101 never once chattered in like 10 years.
>>
>>58469645
The ducky one looks really nice, but the caps are ABS. Sorry if I sound like a dumbass, but do you guys typically just order better caps with the keyboard and trash the factory ones?
>>
>>58469721
Ping tiers:
>Matias = 0.5
>Cherry = 5
>Alps = 15
My old daily driver was an AEK. It was like typing on a gong.
>>
>>58469766
I leave the stock keycaps on there for months before replacing them, so I have time to decide if I really hate them or not.
>>
>>58469685
i use clears on my main 2 and gateron greens on my 3rd

I don't understand why you wouldn't bottom out

it sounds awful
>>
>>58469785
Cherry is shit for a lot of reasons, but its switches don't ping
>>
knock-off chink blacks with thick o-rings that stop the key just past actuation. i just bottom out like it's a chiclet keyboard. THWACK THWACK THWACK

When I first contacted KBParadise about the issue, they told me to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. Sadly, mine was already the latest version. Then they offered to send me replacement switches for me to solder myself, but didn't have a soldering iron yet. So I declined and requested a refund instead (from Massdrop).

Did you try cleaning the excess grease? According to leddit, it helps.

>>58469766
Yes. There's also the Ducky One TKL with PBT keycaps, but without LEDs. Generally, you have to give up backlighting if you want PBT caps.
>>
>>58469858
I don't get it

I just trie it and it feels like shit. Bottoming out is the stop of my keystoke. Please enlighten me, please.
>>
>>58469864
I might try some tuner cleaner but it's most likely going on geekhack when I get it back.

>being able to register keystrokes without full travel feels like shit
then why did you buy three mechanical keyboards for you mega autist

I've only used membrane but just bought this mechanical like two weeks ago and I fucking love not having to bottom out. Just personal preference, I guess? But I thought that was the main point of the keyboards.

Anybody here with a 660C try to silence it with landing pads?

you're fucking retarded. kill yourself.
>>
>>58456205
They sound similar imo, but you should test it yourself.
>>58457472
Just make one yourself, coiling is as easy as wrapping it around a pencil, heating it with a hairdryer or heatgun and then slowly cooling it down again.

Ended up getting the Ducky One TKL RGB with cherry reds. https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1755

Thanks everyone for the help, can't wait until it comes in!

hhkb? Is it any good?
>>
How does a HHKB work with that lack of modifier keys?
>>
>>58470352
well you do pay a massive amount for the brand name, but otherwise it is not a bad keyboard. for a rubber dome. :^)
>>
>>58470079
I bottom out on every single keystroke also. Fuck developing the muscle memory required to type like a dick.
>>
>>58470467
it's a rubber dome? Then why is it in the mechanical thread?
>>
>>58470491
It has a metal spring that acts as contact point. The rubber domes give the tactility.

It's a noncontact switch. The rubber cups are springs.
>>
>>58470491
Well it is a rubber dome with sliders, making it semi mechanical. Topre are very smooth, you could try a btc dome with slider keyboard, like the BTC 51X9 series
