I've not tried them personally, but I'm sure they are. Even cheap mech boards will last for a while, it just might not be the most comfortable and the qc will probably be nonexistant, so you could have a real difference in switch feeling throughout the board.

Just get Gaterons

Cherry MX a shit. Gaterons/zealios, alps and topre are way better.

gateron switches are superior to cherry, the only cherry switches worth paying premium for are clears, because there is no gateron equivalent.
>>
Hi, everyone. I just bought the MasterKeys Lite Keyboard and it's a 'Mem-Chanical' (lol I know) keyboard, says it's cherry keycap compatible. Does that mean I can buy cherry mx keycaps to replace the current ones and it will make it a 'true' mechanical keyboard? Here is what is says on the website but I don't really know much about keyboards. Thanks.

>>
>>58359779
No, that's just a rubber dome. Changing the keycaps isn't going to change the switch itself.

Why would you use QWERTY? You need to re-learn how to type on a 3D keyboard, so you might as well use an optimal layout. If I had one, I'd learn the maltron layout. I had a kinesis advantage once and I regret using QWERTY. Took me months to be up to speed. Because the keyboards are so different than a conventional flat QWERTY, you don't get confused when you transition from curved alternate layout keyboard to a flat qwerty.
>>
>>58359979
It's literally a gateron equivalent to mx clears. Not sure where this hot new meme of saying >reddit every time they get brought up comes from.
>>
>>58359997
>You need to re-learn how to type on a 3D keyboard

I can't speak to the dactyl, but it only took me about a week to get used to typing on an ergodox. Meanwhile I read people saying it takes them months or years to fully get used to another key layout.
>>

I would go for another layout if it weren't for gayming.
Learning to type on a steno one would be pretty great for taking notes.
>feel slightly smoother
That's why everyone like Topre.
You could try lubing the BTC board.
I heard bad things about pic related drying out but I think it's supposed to do that to prevent dirt and grime, as it's for stuff like bicycle chains.
I'm going to buy some to lube an old HHKB with.

I've been using a CST l-track trackball for the past year and I need to say, I prefer it for general computer use vs a mouse.

I realize this is a keyboard thread but most keyboard junkies have a softspot for other peripherals too.

Stabilizer inserts are compatible with model f's. Buy some from unicomp or steal them from a model m.

Does anyone own this NPKC keycap set? I was thinking of going with the 61 key set with the extra eight keys, including the red Esc key. Blanks of course. They look pretty nice, judging the the photos in the reviews.

The ergonomics on them are terrible. I built a foam rest above where it slant's downward and that makes it much more bearable.

I wish the mouse buttons were placed higher too so I could rest the full weight of my hand on the ball and sides without having to worry about triggering it. The sides should be contoured too and have a thumb or pinky spot.

This being said, for all it's faults, it blows all kingston trackballs out of the water. I still have yet to try the nice Japanese ones they sell on Ebay now.
>>
>>58360409

I'm surprised it's not more popular now that ergodox-style keyboards are becoming popularized. It's the most rational layout IMO. The only thing I don't like about it is the placement of the L-key.

How fast can you type on the malt layout so far? I'd imagine if you became very proficient you'd type significantly faster than someone of equal skill on either a QWERTY or DVORAK.

I seriously don't understand. Why would you pay so much for Topre when you could get a Dell Quietkey RT7D5JTW that feels almost exactly the same for $5-$20 used.

This was my very first keyboard and only a year ago I found it in my parents garage collecting dust. Restored it and it still feels crisp as fuck.

Got a Novatouch and the feel is negligible. Only benefit is being able to swap keycap sets.

Dell Quietkey guy here, I normally wouldn't nitpick, and I'm not shitting on Topre-lovers but I am struggling to find the difference in feel from my Quietkey and Novatouch.

Is the Novatouch really not comparable to actual Topres? Maybe I just haven't typed on it long enough, got it as a Christmas present from the wife so I'll fuck off for now and come back next week when I've had more time with it but at this point I doubt I'll be convinced enough to invest in a Topre or HHKB.

If you can find an old razer keyboard with cherry switches then do go for it. Just stay away from their new shitty keyboards
>>
>>58364675
i was looking for the tomoko keyboard desu, theres quickfire rapids being sold in macedonia too but i dont want to spend that much
>>
>>58364739

the new manufacture Razer keyboards use a Greetech switch that is like a cherry blue, with a shorter activation and reset (for muh gamin). older ones had kailh's that were pretty bad.

If you can live with the software, Razer probably has the best/most customizeable RGB around.

Still overpriced, but if it's all you can get, and price isn't a big issue, and you can live with the aesthetics, it is a good keyboard.
>>
>>58364755
There are a couple anons who do have this keyboard so you could ask them for a more in depth review.

If you want RGB then pretty much every chink brand has customizable LEDs. Ducky, Max and Cooler Master have fully programmable LEDs and much better build quality.

If you want a shorter actuation then get silver cherries on a Ducky which will blow razer out of the water in terms build quality

Was tempted to buy either Ornata or the Tourney Blackwidow since they're close in price (approx. $80). The Blackwidow sold is the Khalil one apparently.

How about Rapoo? Aula? Tomoko doesn't sell here.

that very much depends, for low end keyboards (lower than ~150€) it is almost always cheaper to buy one, for anything above there is the chance that you might be cheaper off with building it, but there is more work involved.
the good part about diy keyboards is that they are always fully programmable and it can use parts to your liking. there are also designs that can only be made by yourself, like the dactyl.

maybe look into the gh60 for a fairly low priced and easy diy project.

Try Taobao. The MX Clear you want is called 白轴 (white switch); the MX White is actually called 奶轴 (milky switch).

You'll probably need an agent like Basetao to import it to your country, but it may still be cheaper.

I checked Winkeyless, and they are indeed no longer listed under the Gateron switch option. That fucking sucks! I remember they would sell for $0.35 per switch. I just checked out Zeal's site too, and Zealios are selling for $0.85 a switch? Holy fuck, does no one call him out on that pricing?

I don't know of anyone selling ISO keyboards in the country that invented ANSI except for WASD

what about ansi then.

If you want ANSI then you have more options
Anything made by Ducky is a solid choise. I'd recommend the One with PBT keycaps.

Is there an affordable, quality source of keycaps? I'm looking at buying used because poverty and wondering if I can just replace all the caps without doubling the price.
>>
>>58375339
even cheap pad printed keycaps will cost you like 20 bucks
>>
>>58375339
>Affordable

what do you mean?? whats the maximum price? saying just affordable is pretty subjective
>>
>>58374845
>What do you think all the hate is about?
I suppose I mean that so many people still buy shit from him, instead of forcing him to drop his prices.
>>
>>58375295
would you recommend this for streaming/gaming? with the browns or the red? I dont mind mechanical keyboard clicks but I want something that wont be so loose when typing regularly.
>>
>>58375501
I don't know how much they're "supposed to" cost. Realistically I'm sure they cost less than 10 cents a piece to manufacture to quality spec but I'm sure they're not going to cost close to that.
>>
where can i get plate mount 2u stabilizers and how do they look like?
>>
>>58375633
Cherry-style or costar-style?
>>
>>58375625
Cheapest you can get a thick, cherry profile PBT set is around $30-$40.
>>
>>58375339
used old cherry boards with pbt caps are the cheapest way possible. 8-12€ on average per set, and there are blank pbt sets on ebay and aliexpress that you could later dye.
>>58375649
what is the difference?

Just got a Steelseries 6Gv2 with Cherry MX Black switches, what do you /g/uys think?

>>
>>58375816
i think i would like costar ones, is there any other place to get them in germany? paying more for shipping than for the product on something that weights under 100g is always a bit weird.
thanks
>>
>>58375622
That Ducky One has programmable macros so if you do play games and want something like that then I'd suggest you buy it. All cherry switches are solid (they are the consumer standard after all). As for reds I personally don't like them since they offer no tactile feedback, unlike a rubber dome which does. There is no such thing as a gaming switch by the way.
>>
>>58375761
>bigass enter key
thats really the only problem with the keyboard. The keycaps have poor build quality. My rubber dome has laser etched caps, while the steel series is pad printed. Luckily you can get replacements from china

I have to work at least 3 days a week from the office on a shitty dell membrane keyboard.
>>
>>58375945
does it come with different frame options? Like color wise? these are less important questions obviously. It looks like this is going to be a good choice either way.
>>

then get a matias qc

Only the non backlit ones have macro support. As for color options there are a few, but not that many for browns

>>

OK, I'm starting to understand I think. PBT is the key's themselves its a different quality that doesn't start to wear down as much right? if I got the back lit one would I be able to change it to PBT keys?

this is the one that Ive been looking at with the information you gave me.

There's some vocabulary you should know if you're gonna be in these threads.

PBT, ABS, and POM are different types of plastic used in the construction of keyboard parts. Keycaps are almost always made out of PBT or ABS. ABS is cheaper than PBT, but the oils on your fingers will polish it over time, so it won't retain its texture. PBT does not have this problem.

Pad printing, dye sublimation, laser engraving, and doubleshot molding are different methods for making the legends on keycaps. Doubleshot legends are the longest-lasting. These are made by injecting the mold twice with two colors of plastic (ie. two "shots"). A few years ago, this could only be done with ABS plastic, but Vortex invented a method of making the keycap body out of PBT and the legend out of something else. This is how backlit PBT keycaps are made. Cheaper brands use a stupid-looking font for these because the mold inserts are easier to make.

Different families of switches use different mounts. The big ones are Alps, Topre, and the most popular, Cherry MX. Most mechanical switches are clones of Cherry MX switches, and use identical mounts. You can replace the keycaps on almost any keyboard as long as the mounts match. Almost all aftermarket keycaps use Cherry MX mounts, which look like pic related.

The meme part of it would be the media keys and volume knob. I have an earlier Das Professional 3 without media functions but if I were to buy one now, it'd be the Prime 13 model.

>Cat keeps stepping on the dedicated computer sleep button and stopping everything I'm doing

>>
>>58376661
Yeah. The first generation or two was worth it but after a couple years they switched to cheaper manufacturers, abandoned all pretenses of QA, and focused on milking their brand popularity for as much cash as possible.

>>58376682
They do look thicker. Maybe they changed their molds, or maybe my picture was mislabeled. I found it somewhere and don't know who made it.
>>
>>58376661
The newer ones have worse build quality then the older ones, while still being the same price. I'd say pass, unless you want an older one
>>
>>58376719
Kek, I have no power buttons connected on my PC case because they were top mounted and my cat kept turning off or rebooting my PC. It runs 24/7, but if for some reason I need to shutdown or loose power for longer than my UPS can last, I have to open the case and press the button on the mainboard.

Anon who bought the used pok3r here. Just finished cleaning each key and the plate from the dirt and pubic hair and putting it back together (caps were changed to a DVORAK layout)
Caps are somewhat worn out but I'm planning to get dem carbons as soon as they come back. I also need a cool cable.
