if I've changed /bin/sh to dash, removing bash shouldnt cause any problems on debian, right?
Or will it, because important things start with #!/bin/bash?

Im using fish as my interactive shell, and havnt managed to make zsh as comfy when I've tried it, so I guess I'll just leave it installed.
I mean, maybe I could make /bin/bash point to dash too, since its bash but gimped, but I dont know if thatd break any of the scripts that grepping everything in /etc tells me use bash. Itd probably break something.

Hey /g/, what's the best lightweight and user-friendly distro for daily use?
>>
>>58110415
Gentoo
>>
>>58110297
Why do you say that, anon? Because I felt like removing something I'm not using?
Its not like im hellbent on getting it out to keep my system pure and aryan, I just felt like Im not making use of it, so may as well remove if it it wouldnt break other stuff. Though I see now that it probably would, and the only ways to prevent it either leave another shell Im not doing anything with around, or probably would break something anyways.
Its very confusing and strange why you'd think that just because I felt like removing something and asked my friends in /fglt/ if it'd be safe.
Looking down on others as 'skiddies' or 'retard noobs' because they wondered if they could do something you know probably wouldnt work is a very bitter, angry outlook to have.

The only thing that should matter is how the software performs, not who made it. It's free software for Christ's sake, you're not even supporting him by having it on your system. >>
>>58110725
>should be easy to install, and use and have a wealth of software
according to your own preference. why do you think anyone else cares about what a "daily driver" "should" do for you? also I hope you understand that "easy to install" is in no way a real metric since not everyone is as retarded as you.
>>
>>58110751

>>
>>58110751
>>58110725
>>58110700
What does or does not work as a "daily driver" depends entirely on ones preferences
If your preferences make tinycore perfectly acceptable as your daily driver thats good for you and you should enjoy using it
If talking about an OS Being acceptable as a "daily driver" or not IN GENERAL, we're talking about most peoples preferences.
For the way most people use a "daily driver," very little software amongst other things disqualifies something from being a good daily driver
enough
>stop liking what I dont like
and
>stop not liking what I like
>>
>>58110773
i don't have one since i don't use fucking stupid terms like "daily driver" when the things a person does on his machine daily are subjective to the point of having no real way to even formulate such a definition. for example a "daily driver" for me must has a certain compiler for a certain language. it's a pretty good metric for me but meaningless for pretty much anyone else.

Friends,

I would like to switch to Ubuntu-MATE from Windows 8.1 on my main laptop.

The main reasons I haven't so far:
>The sound is fucking ugly - I have some Dolby Audio driver on my Windows 8.1 and high quality headphones and they don't fucking compare.
>SAS (not a major issue as I have to use virtualisation for this shit anyway)
>OneNote (Word/Excel+VBA and the other general shit).

So I need to be able to listen to high quality audio and conveniently use MS Office without any compatibility issues (so Wine is out).

I'm thinking a Virtual Machine with Windows 8.1, but I don't know if a VLC Window from Windows on a Linux desktop will solve the Audio issue. I also don't know if it will be slow.

Can someone throw me a bone?

How does one change the text color of the labels of items in the Firefox menu through the userChrome.css file? Specifically the History submenu (pic related).
Context: I installed the Arc Dark theme for Firefox and saw that the font color for bookmarks in the bookmarks toolbar hasn't changed i.e. my bookmarks were just black text on a dark background. After some mild research, I added the following to my userChrome.css file:
.toolbarbutton-text {
color: white !important;
}

However, this apparently also changed the text color for recent history items in the Firefox menu because DOM Inspector reports that they are also considered toolbarbutton, just like bookmarks, and since the theme didn't apply to the menu, I now have white text on light background in the History submenu. Essentially, how can I change the text color of everything in, as it were, PanelUI-HistoryItems? And optionally, the same but for zoom-reset-button and PanelUI-customize in the parent menu?

It depends what you need.

For me, it's arch linux. It's the only distro with fcitx-mozc, the best japanese IME software. Other distros only have ibus-mozc which is actually completely broken and requires you to click your mouse and select before you can type instead of it being automatic like fctix with a keyboard shortcut. I'm not willing to resort to anthy over mozc, so other distros are not for me. I also enjoy having new software, so another point to arch for that.

Arch and Gentoo moreso are good for learning about GNU+Linux because they force you to learn things like configuring and compiling the Linux kernel.

They're also simpler than Debian derivatives internally. Arch PKGBUILDs and Gentoo ebuilds are both less complex than Debian packaging. Developers like them for this reason.

For users, Debian derivatives are easier.
For developers, Gentoo and Arch can be easier.

I wouldn't recommend Gentoo and Arch for most actual work though. Having to play sysadmin takes time that could be spent on actually being productive.

Keen to dive deeper into GNU(+Linux)?
Install Gentoo for a year or two
Then switch to Debian to apply what you've learned and focus on productivity

For someone at least a little familiar with how stuff works on linux and using the command line.
It'd be hard for someone whos completely new. Yes, reading the wiki and manpages is hard if you have no prior experience.
>What does this mean exactly??
>am I doing it right???
>im gonna break something and they're just gonna call me a retard if I ask for help
>Im just copypasting and following instructions oh god I have no idea what im doing
You dont need alot of prior experience, but at least a little. Like, a few weeks using an easy distro and toying with stuff sometimes, at least, for it not to be hard.

Use a distro with a graphical installer that comes with a desktop enviornment first. XFCE and LXDE/LXQT are the lightweight desktop enviornments. You dont even have to switch once you would be able to if you're comfortable enough with what you have.
Unless you feel like just doing trial by fire and slogging through it till you figure everything out. You dont have to, just do it if you actually wanna.
>>

They don't suck, they're for different tastes than his or yours. Or mine, really. They have their approach and people who like it would like them.
Do learn vim though, its extremely convenient.
Libreoffice is the office suite on linux, for word and stuff.
Speedcrunch is a pretty nice calculator program.
smplayer is a good video player. You can use mpv with it. bomi isnt bad either. And of course, mpv itself is also good.
Clementine and deadbeef are music players players. I like the latter because I can make it look how my foobar did on windows.
google [type of program] linux to find programs if you want one for something in particular.

It's "being friendly".

I'm in my 3rd day of spending ~4 hours a day fucking with Kubuntu and I really still have no idea what I'm doing.

I've memorized a couple of cli commands and learned where the most basic of system files live, elementary shit.

There is still shit not working properly on my system. Nobody seems to know what the issue is. If I bring up my issue step one is someone accusing me of fucking up. If I break through that barrier, and get them to realize I did everything right, step two is they suggest a bunch of things I've already tried. Step three if whoever is helping is still engaged at that point is to flounder around trying to pull a solution out of their ass until something different happens.

In this way in about 10 hours of fucking around myself / shitposting, and 5 hours of live support from various linux IRC rooms I've gotten to where I almost have a functional system for basic tasks, but I'm still using half ass workarounds for a big problem.

So, I can either dump ubuntu and accept that most of that time was wasted, try another distro and maybe have the same problems. Or I can dump ubuntu, really write off the time as wasted and install windows. Or I can keep trying to power through getting ubuntu working right and maybe never be satisfied anyway.

Linux is demoralizing me and taking all the excitement out of having built a new PC. Is this what you guys crave?

OK, maybe going as far as spelling out [type of program] linux was unnecessary.
People seem to need to be told they can just search shit, though.
the worst case scenario is someone who would have searched "Dear mr. google, could you tell me what program to type my paper with, im using linux, thanks. regards, anon", so I felt like it may be worth specifying.

windows 7

I was listening to a song, went out for a smoke and was listening to it from outside. Then it stopped. I looked at my terminal and someone typed "mpc stop". I've been listening to the same song on repeat for an hour. Do you think a ghost is getting angry about it?

That was me, sorry.

wine support for dxd9 is still sketch and on a per game instance. Even with CMST the stability is sketchy and always always buggy.
There is no reason to use linux for gaming. Even the steambox was given up and drought in problems.

As games move to dx12,which will never be supported, you'll find fewer and fewer options

Is there any good voice control software?

If the shit has anything to do with the DE, its probably because kubuntus KDE Is outdated and broken as hell for it.
anyways, "we" either dont get demoralized by that stuff or dont have those issues.

Windows is malware.

Nope, it's a network driver issue.

Apparently the onboard LAN on my ASUS Z170 motherboard isn't supported properly. Who'd have fucking thought.

Oh. Well, issues with hardware if you use something not well supported are a thing with linux. I Hear at least, I've not had issues with it.
If you're gonna put linux on a PC you build, you wanna make sure the parts you're using are supported, if thats so.
Sorry m8.
