Is Antergos even a real distro? To my knowlege it's basically just Arch with an installer and DE choices, but unlike ArchAnywhere, it' overwrites all "Arch Linux" with "Antergos".
Manjaro is more doing it's own thing. So I'd say either Arch or Manjaro, if you really want to fall for the Arch/Arch based crap meme.

Honestly, any distro works so long as you have a guide for it. I would avoid Ubuntu/Debian. Ubuntu sets up AppArmor too strict for usb passthrough to work, and Debian requires patching the kernel IIRC. I suggest Fedora if you can find the guides for it. Arch is also good for this. Just remember: You will need multiple guides that may cover a different distro than yours, which can cause conflicts if you do not have a guide for your distro.

Does anyone have that picture that had instructions on how to setup whatever it was called to run windows through linux and it had something about having a specific type of CPU you needed. This is really vague because I've forgotten most of it but surely someone knows what I'm talking about
>>
>>57617036
>Ubuntu sets up AppArmor too strict for usb passthrough to work
Nope. However you might get AppArmor issues in general, so you should set it to complain mode for your VM and libvirt in general.

>and Debian requires patching the kernel IIRC.
That depends on if you go stable, testing or unstable. Testing and unstable does not need patches. Stable needs patches since it is on an ancient fucking kernel version (3.16). It should be 4.4 or higher, where testing is on 4.7 right now. So if you go testing or unstable you'll be fine.

>>57616771
Depends on your GPUs. If you use two different ones (Intel integrated + NVIDIA, or AMD + NVIDIA or anything like that) it should work on everything. That includes Ubuntu. The easiest would be Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu and Arch-based distros as they have loads of guides out there.

However if you have two GPUs of the same brand like me (two NVIDIA cards, a 770 and 660) I'd highly recommend a distro that has dracut or something that isn't fucking initramfs-tools based (Ubuntu is initramfs-tools). Because initramfs-tools does not have any arguments that allow you to prioritize certain kernel modules, which will lead to the NVIDIA driver catching the passthrough card long before vfio-pci does. Dracut can prioritize certain modules before others.

Good luck. It's not as hard as many make it out to be. Just follow a guide and you should be fine (Protip: Use vfio-pci, do not use pci-stub).
>>
>>57622352
Maybe the fact that you "do it all the time" helps in that there's always only a handful packages that are upgraded. I guess the more packages are being upgraded at once, the higher the risk of something braking.
>>
>>57622496
>braking
Lol, breaking of course. Must've been thinking of a car or something as I was typing this.
>>
>>57622496

I also recently upgraded from 16.04 to 16.10 and it worked well. I don't really have that many packages installed, around 800, so maybe that slightly helped.

I'm planning to build a PC that will, ideally, double as an audio production computer and a home server. Building the rig itself won't be a problem, I'm already set on resources for that, but I'm trying to figure out which linux setup would work for it since I'm fairly new to linux. Would it be better to:

1. Use primarily an audio oriented distro such as KX studio and download server software onto that, or
2. Use a mainstream distro like Mint or Ubuntu for both the DAW and the server software, or
3. Dual boot an audio distro and a server or mainstream distro

“LAMP” stands for “Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP”—a common combination of software to use on a web server, except that “Linux” in this context really refers to the GNU/Linux system. So instead of “LAMP” it should be “GLAMP”: “GNU, Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP.”
>>
>>57623721
mint is just ubuntu with some custom software, gigantic security holes and a clusterfuck for a repo.

typical beginner-friendly distros include Ubuntu(or any flavor of ubuntu), manjaro and opensuse just to name a few. What makes these distros beginner-friendly is the out-of-the-box-experience™ and an easy to use graphical installer.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've

recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell

utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through

a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux

I'm setting up an ubuntu box for my mother in law who isn't super tech-literate.

1) How do I create a hidden administrator account? Ie it just doesn't show up in the account list at login.

2) How do I ensure that I can decrypt an encrypted home directory, say if she forgets her password? Do I just need to copy the encryption passphrase?

3) How do I setup ssh rsa keys with an encrypted home which isn't mounted? I ran ssh-copy-id successfully, but if there has been no login at the machine yet (say after a reboot), I'm still prompted for a password.

Alright, I messed up.

I'm running Linux Mint and I initially installed the open-cobol through the Software Manager and it worked ok for a simple hello world but it failed to compile some sample networking programs that I got from sourceforge. After uninstalling, trying to install a newer version of open-cobol (2.0 as opposed to 1.1), having that fail, and trying to revert back to 1.1, I can no longer compile even the simple hello world.

Below is the beginning of the long list of warnings/errors that I'm now getting.
In file included from /tmp/cob4120_0.c:20:0:

First off, a full fletched bar takes nearly nothing, especially when you work with POSIX sh, but to be a bit more efficient, try parsing a named pipe in a loop and write stuff to it on events. Search github for lemonbar scripts for examples.

Grub is set up here to boot from a partition identified by its UUID. When you changed the device, UUID of the system one changed.

Think of UUIDs as MAC addresses for disks and partitions. You just have to reconfigure grub, so it'll boot from the right partition. Refer to the web for that.
