I really want to get into Linux-based OS's, could someone lead me to some type of guide they like or just give me suggestions of how to get started.
Thanks

/g/ wiki has (had?) decent linux intro article
short version: use an old computer or a virtualization program to try it out. xubuntu, ubuntu, mint, chakra, are all ok first choices (and everyone familiar with any of these will have some reason why each one is garbage)
Get used to doing things in one, fiddle a bit, and if you like it you'll probably want to fuck with it more and eventually you'll be screaming at the arch installation process.

Find >>>/g/
lern to -- >>>/g/catalog
CTRL-F for "linux"

There is always a /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread
-- >>>/g/57455336
And lurk/post/lern to archive for previous threads.
Also, /g/entoomen start up several linux threads a day, some of which aren't entirely shitposting. So, keep an eye out for those and lurk/post/lern with other anons in those.
The sticky will take you to the wiki,

Also a great resource with all sorts of basics to get you started.
There are a number of linux distros recommended for n000bs in the info I pointed you at above, but also consider SOLUS:
It's recently become quite mature and has some exciting capabilities & desktop environment all designed to be relatively n00b-friendly.
Relatively.
It will depend upon your general tech aptitude and if you have any linux experience at all .. so it might also be a better second try at linux after something like Ubuntu or openSUSE. Each distro (distribution package) has its own community and support, so find the homepage for whichever distro(s) you attempt and look for their forums and wikis to get started.
One of my rule-of-thumbs these days: if a distro has a good description of how to acquire their installation ISO and mount it to a USB drive for installation, you're probably working with a reasonably user-friendly community/distro.
Early on, learn the difference between linux the operating system and the desktop environment installed on top of your linux distro. You can install a linux distro of choice, and then install one or more desktop environments for your GUI user-experience. For example, you could install the debian distro and the XFCE and MATE and LXDE desktop environments, then switch to whichever desktop fits your needs & comfort level.

Here's a list of the more popular easy distributions so stick to those:
>Ubuntu
>Mint
>ZorinOS
>Elementary OS
>PCLinuxOS
>Solus
>openSUSE
>Manjaro
>Antergos
>Mageia
>Rosa
It's not in any particular order other than what they're based on, so just do a little research on them or pick one at random.
Note that each of them have several different desktop environments (basically it's user interface), so pick one which you like the most so you don't get immediately disgusted by a distro (for example, lots of people dislike Ubuntu's Unity DE, but it's also available in MATE/GNOME/XFCE/LXDE). Although you can change it and customise it, some people just don't want to bother.
Since you'll probably go to /g/, be on notice that "install gentoo" is a meme. Gentoo is a more difficult to install and set up distribution so avoid it as a first time user. If you want a gentoo-based distribution you can install Sabayon instead.

popular != quality
distros like Mint are pretty bad (quality and security)
>>6757148
He just wants to get started, I don't think he should just jump into Arch or something better "quality".
>distros like Mint are pretty bad (quality and security)
Windows has terrible quality and security too, but it's popular and that's what makes it more usable. If you're going to use Linux distributions as a desktop OS then might as well pick something that works fine without you having to waste much time configuring it.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

you can scale down without quality loss if the aspect ratio stays the same. just in case you want to make the background take more of the overall space.
