I tried Red Hat, Suse, and Mandrake on the desktop. If something didn't work, I had nowhere to turn to understand and fix the problem. Not so with Gentoo. Why do you think it is that so many users of other distros are coming here to get their questions answered? This is not a raw coincidence. It is because so many people here have the answers, and a good percentage of them have the answers because they have learned from the experience of working hands-on with source-code, patches, kernel config, drive-layout, and the numerous text-files in /etc.

please help. can someone test the latest GOG version of Terraria and see if it works for them. I'm getting a "Terraria file not found" error, despite the file being there. Could it be a dependency issue? How do I find out which dependencies a non-free videogame has?

>cloud dot mail dot ru dot public/CJTo/oHHWZ7PZF

If it does, can you state which distribution you're using if that matters?

1. open terminal
2. cd to the game's directory
3. find main executable

it should output missing libs

I am running ubuntu 16.04. I updated grub and now it is only booting directly to the command line minimum grub. When I use exit command it only goes back to the minimum grub command line. If I exit twice then it goes into insert boot media screen. Any help?
>>
>>57632274
Your searching wrong, because this is basic.
1. LiveCD or use the original bootable USB
2. Insert the cloned one and find out the
partition uuids of the cloned usb
3. Navigate to the grub.cfg of the cloned usb
and edit in the correct partition uuids
4. Profit

On Ubuntu start up my monitors hibernate then restart in a 40 seconds period before getting to the encryption screen. I formatted my PC just for this after it started doing this when I deleted some KDE while and it just started doing it again after installing VLC (both cases could be unrelated)

Any ideas? My W10 start up works fine
>>

It works, without checking any dependencies. I just had to manually run the executable and not rely on the start.sh script.

Hitler Linux is actually pretty funny.

>To protect your system for being overrun by liberal thinkers, all telnet sessions are dumped (to /.Hitler/SNIFFS) and monitored for words like 'freedom', 'liberation', 'bar.*mitzvah', 'hitler.*gay' etc.. If any of these regexes are found, the first sector on your main harddrive (the bootsector for HitlerLinux[tm]) are nullified and the system is immediately halted.
>>
>>57632826

>UDP and ICMP support has been removed in the kernel (thus rendering HitlerLinux[tm] an impossible platform to use for malicious hackers).

>When invoking passwd, instead of having to type in a password (which can be very hard to remember) you choose from a list of 10 appropriate nazi slogans (/.Hitler/SLOGANS) as your password.

>Since ext2 and ext3 are gay and Hitler didn't like gays very much, we have written our own fs (hitlerfs) that is shipped with HitlerLinux[tm]. It is very similar to DOS FAT16 (and the annoying paradigmes '.' and '..' has been removed).

Is lubuntu really the most light weight ready to use distro out there?
>>
>>57634227
I actually learned a lot of C by reading GNU sources, because it's well documented and has lots of error checking.

For example, the BSD version of cat has less LOC compared to the GNU version, but it's also less efficient, since it reads char by char, while GNU cat reads in blocks, which is much faster, but needs ofc a bit more complex code.

You see, as always, one man's bloat is another man's feature.

>>57635677

>battery time
Do you have recent meticulously and thoroughly researched data to back that up? A person with common sense would realize that the difference between the core components of a desktop environment in terms of power usage are negligible. The main things which would drain your power, like backlight, WLAN devices, GPU or other hardware, are all the same. Together with the more "demanding" software like web browsers. You use those no matter that distribution you're on.

>What would you suggest when someone asks for a lightweight distro?
The only definition of "lightweight" in this context would be the number of optional features compiled with the package. That and maybe package splitting. Together they could make a difference in terms of "lightweightness" between distributions. To be honest, it doesn't matter, because most of the time you don't get any significant performance boosts when disabling features and the hard drive space you save by disabling them or splitting packages is also insignificant with today's hard drive capacities.

Seriously, why does Ubuntu install so much fucking faster than Debian? I want to decode this mystery and compile some custom debian testing ISOs with nonfree firmware included and get hella downloads

Ubuntu and Debian both use d-i (debian-installer) more or less, but Ubuntu uses Ubiquity which is a front end gui for it and uses d-i for "many back-end tasks" I don't know if that means they optimized some of the back end stuff enough to make it significantly faster or what, but it definitely is faster.

Running some tests now, if I'm wrong then I'm glad that I don't have to try and figure out why Debian so much slower. Here I downloaded the 678MB XFCE CD1 image but it gave me an error when I said I didn't want to use a network mirror. "Do you want to insert any more CDs? No. Do you want to use a network mirror? No. Select and install software step failed" and I have no X.

I'll try running a network mirror to try and finish the installation with no error but I don't have the fastest internet so that would almost surely take longer than Ubuntu if it downloaded 500MB or more. I will also try inserting multiple CDs in the VM to get the installation to finish, though that kind of defeats the point of installation speed/convenience. I usually just burn it to a flash drive and I can install anywhere. Don't want to have to swap out multiple flash drives whenever I want to install debian.

If that is still slower than Ubuntu the only other test to run would be the one I've always used, Debian DVD1 with your choice of DE, which as you can see on the torrent window is close to 4GB while Ubuntu barely breaks 1.5GB, so there's really no question which would install faster.

damn this 678MB debian CD is really fucking slim compared to gaybuntwos fucking 1.6GB of fucking bloat lel. it doesn't count as bloat if the niggers make me download thousands of packages while installing or it won't even finish.

Why the fuck does debian do this? Ubuntu requires no internet to install properly. Admittedly the debian CD is much faster than using the debian DVD to install, but I still have my doubts whether it's faster than Ubuntu. And if it is faster it doesn't blow it out of the water or anything, and certainly doesn't take "10% of the time to install"

I would still bet money that the Ubuntu install is faster. I think Debian could be faster if it just included all the packages it forced me to download mid-installation.

Anyway, now that the guy has to chop his head off with a chainsaw and livestream it as agreed upon, my mission is complete and I have verified my original point that Ubuntu does indeed have a faster install time, back to the original matter.

How can we increase the speed of Debian's installation to match Ubuntu? I think it would be installed in pretty much the same amount of time if Debian didn't have to download packages. The Ubuntu iso is 1.6gb while the debian CD is 600MB but has to install packages. When all is said and done It probably comes out to about a gig downloaded or maybe even a little bit less. If all those packages were on the ISO to start, it might even be faster to install then Ubuntu.

I wonder if it's possible to roll your own debian ISO and put those packages in there so it can finish without needing a network mirror.

What is the lowdown on Linux audio?

I have switched from Windows as my DAW of choice got a Linux release and its been amazing. Great latency of about 128-256 samples and rock solid.

Only thing im missing are the numerous Windows VSTs. I heard that running VSTs via Wine is a pain and will bring back all the latency problems from Windows. Anything I am missing here?

Also: To realtime-kernel or to not realtime-kernel? I left my default kernel in place for now and it all seems to run very smooth.

Bonus: Is it worth the hassle to setup jack audio when the default ALSA drivers are sufficient for my current situation? Any hidden benefits?

OS is Ubuntu Mate 16.10 and my DAW is Bitwig

Thx guyssss

Surely someone in here must be using the proprietary Nvidia drivers. Can you check your "dmesg" output to see if it also says that for you. It would also be neat if you could post your kernel line, to see if you disable the framebuffer or not (disabling it gets rid of that message, but brings other problems).

Is it a good idea to make a bootable sd card with Linux on it (with persistent storage maybe) to start getting used to it, as a Windows user?

As long as you dive in and actually use it. You won't get a good feel for it just pottering around for an hour so. The entry friendly distros like ubuntu are very similar to windows anyway. it's only when you meme yourself doing some stupid shit like installing arch that things are very different
>>
>>57647807
yeah, it's the second best alternative to having a separate storage device for linux.

remember about the performance hit you'll get due to limited io speeds of usb flash drive.

How do I find out whether the correct driver is running on debian?
When I freshly installed Debian, only ethernet would work, but wifi didn't.
So I install a non-free Atheros driver and it worked.
I then did an apt upgrade and aptitude did some weird shit on the side when I was installing some other unrelated shit and after a reboot neither ethernet nor wifi worked.
I found out, that:
1. Normal DHCP wasn't working
2. When I assign eth0 an address manually and set a default gateway, the ethernet connection works
3. Looking into the kernel log it tells me that it has some struggle loading the atheros driver. It tries a few times and fails but then it tries again and there is no further line explaining if it worked or not.
How do I now find out where I fucked up and what packages I need to get again? How do I check, whether the atheros driver is running currently?

look into localmodconfig (automatically enabling only modules needed to support the hardware the system currently has attached to it)
the downside is of course, if you plug in something new, you may not have the module(s) required to use it

>>
>>57651382
Yeah you can go into Something else->resize your windows partition to create a new unallocated space for the install. Not sure if I would completely trust gparted not to fuck up my windows, what you can do instead is go into windows 10 and resize the partitions with Disk Management. Simply shrink your windows partition down until you have enough room for swap + however many GBs (probably atleast 20) for using mint.
>>
>>57651499
>>57651354
Yes you can do it for any distro, but gentoo is geared toward people who want to do it. During the install you can to compile it yourself with a gui and gentoo manual that walks you through all the steps. It's not for the faint of heart.
>>
>>57651354
>What is the advantage of Gentoo, really?
A distribution built to make autistic level of control over your operating system easier.

I will not talk about performance benefits, I'm sure there are some but I'm not sure what they are since I've never seen any actual semi-scientific comparison.
>>

>>
>>57651579
Damn, just got me thinking about how fast Ubuntu could be if it just had better default CPU flags when compiling

>>
>>57651688
Not sure, I've also run into that problem. There are a lot of edge cases and weird behavior in installers still. Does your PC use UEFI? I've had a lot of problems with it before with that legacy boot or UEFI mode, or Windows corrupting my Linux installation somehow on UEFI. Or maybe the Linux mint installer there is outdated, and the Ubuntu installer would give you the option. there's any number of fuckerys that could be going on that cause this..

Anyway I've had the same glitch/weird behavior, it's an easy fix. simply downsize your windows partition and use the unallocated space. It's a small inconvenience.
>>
>>57651354
You can. But gentoo already has a package manager built exactly for that.
>>
>>57651813
If i do that, how i make the home, swap things? Does it do it automatically? Because i could use the home to transfer files from win to mint and viceversa if i need.
Btw yes, my laptop is Uefi, but i booted both win and mint by selecting the legacy option in bios.
>>
>>57651891
It's a little bit more difficult in Windows, but one convenient thing I was able to do in Linux when I still dual booted is mount the Windows partition and copy files over. So yeah you can transfer files.

Not sure if you have to make the swap partition yourself, it will probably prompt you to make one, it's not 100% necessary and you could add one later if the installer somehow botched it.

Yeah UEFI sucks ass, I use legacy boot. Recently I was dual booting and eventually my Linux partition somehow got corrupted and wouldn't start, I ended up just installing Linux as the only OS, I'll just use virtualbox if I really need a windows program, UEFI sucks ass
>>
>>57651970
Wish i could to that, can-t really play a intensive game inside virtual box.
So say i resize the win10 partition to space it needs, and then i install mint on the freed space, will the installer divide /home /swap and the system partition or will i have to do that by myself?
>>
>>57651499
nigga if you're going for mint, installing any other distro is the best advice you can get

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>Wish i could to that, can-t really play a intensive game inside virtual box.
I know VMware has shit where you can do a GPU passthrough on certain hardware now so you can directly use the GPU on the emulated OS, hopefully that becomes more widely available. Anyone ever done a GPU passthrough on VMware? I know it was a meme on here for a few weeks but I haven't seen anyone talk about it lately. I can only hope Virtualbox or a free vm will get this feature, no way in hell am I buying VM ware for $250

>So say i resize the win10 partition to space it needs, and then i install mint on the freed space, will the installer divide /home /swap and the system partition or will i have to do that by myself?
Unless you specify otherwise the only 2 partitions are the OS partition and swap. It gives you the option to put your home folder in a separate partition but I've never found a reason to.

It will probably prompt you to make a swap partition, but even if you complete the installer and forget it, having no swap isn't a huge deal. You can create a swap partition afterwards, though I think it will probably just create on for you or prompt you to create one.
