I have a new laptop and the resolution is getting on my tits. I've mananged to get the system fonts and firefox fonts to be a reasonable size but I'm still coming across programs which use their own size and are far too small. I don't know what to do, I have tried to change the resolution but the next size down looks fucking awful.

So I'm about to do a fresh install of kubuntu, but I know for sure I will want to play around with another distro or two, namely arch, but maybe debian centos and MAYBE gentoo some months down the track when I'm not a total retard.

if I want these distros to be on a partition and not just run on a VM, how much space should I save for them to play around with? Would say 20gig be plenty?

depends on how much crap you plan on installing
10gb for each system partition is very safe, 5gb each is probably safe
for reference my debian stable is currently at 1.5gb, but i like my systems with no frills
my first debian install was 7gb at its largest so better safe than sorry

how can i run the windows autorun function from wine? i'm trying to install a windows program from an ISO -- i've set up a folder with the ISO in it, mounted it to my linux filesystem, and told wine that the folder is actually a CD drive, but can't figure out how to start wine without explicitly telling it something to run. i'm going to eventually have to "switch CD's" but first off i'm just trying to get it to run. anyone have any ideas?

the militia is effective because of its management and the men know it but EVEN if the soldiers decide to leave, which they are allowed to under our contract they will form militias of their own to fight communism in this thread or in others if we plan to go international
the anti communism is written deep into the source code which is too long for anyone to rewrite it to fight against us before the war is over.

one more long term plan is added as of 15/11/2016:
- dissolution of the government after the war with a clause that allows reestablishment whenever a communist threat is present

- establishing a permanent private security company to check the threads for a communist thread and report back to the King (me)

also:
currently in need of a right hand man. anyone with the will to defeat the communists is fine by me. no fascists though since they are leftist scum as well who are allowed in the militia but can not hold positions of power and are always closely monitored since they have a propensity for coups.

Hello. Consider joining the new PMC and swearing allegiance to our new monarch.
Regarding your actual question, Ubuntu is probably the best distro for new users. Don't bother with mint since it is basically ubuntu but with very bad security. You can try something new though. Just pick anything you're interested in!

The only thing I don't fully grasp are the default font associations and font assignment. I understand that I can set a font for my desktop environment, GTK and Qt, which pretty much covers everything. However then Fontconfig comes in for fonts on the web and their rendering.
Looking through the preset rules in /etc/fonts/conf.d/ makes my head spin. I mean, it works, but I don't like the "just works" mentality without me understanding it.

>Linux is also distributed under an open source license. Open source follows the following key philosophies:

> The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.

> The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.

> The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.

> The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others.

>The above are crucial to understanding the community that comes together to create the Linux platform. It is, without a doubt, an operating system that is “by the people, for the people”. These philosophies are also one of the main reasons a large percentage of people use Linux. It’s about freedom and freedom of choice.

Both linux and windows are on different partitions, I thought they weren't supposed to interfere with each other?

I have this drive that gets mounted when I boot into Debian or Windows, essentially a shared drive that uses NTFS. Windows did the whole update without my permission thing and now I can't see any of the files in the drive on Debian but I can see them on Windows.
I tried turning off quick startup (hybrid startup) on Windows and also ran the ntfsfix on the device in Debian but still can't see my files or folders. I also tried searching on ddg and google but I didn't get any useful hits, maybe I'm not wording the search correctly.
Anybody here have experience with this problem or know how I could fix it?

I have a thinkpad T400 that I plan on putting linux on. I plan on using it for mostly programming and just getting more familiar with linux.

What distro should I get? I want some customization but I don't want to use arch like I normally do as getting to run on a laptop would be a pain.

Any recommendations?

It's pretty easy. Just remove/replace all the GNU components of your system and leave the Linux kernel intact.

Not lying, getting installing arch isn't hard.
You don't need to know anything about linux to install it, just need to be able to use google.

In what way? What kind of mental retardation is this?
Mostly dealing with drivers, getting necessary packages
You don't know which drivers and packages you need? And what makes you think that it will be different on other distros in this regard?

>>
>>57526664
>>57526691

I just tested it on Ubuntu and they did not alias "install" to "apt-get install". When I think about it, it would be crazy, because of the other unrelated "install" program.
I'll just assume that you forgot to add "apt-get" in your post.
>>
>>57526714

No. Screenfetch is in the official Arch repositories.

>>57526729

Then you didn't do it right. Xfconf-query should be able to manipulate all of the Xfce specific settings. I can't test it for the wallpaper specifically, but it works well for the Xfce programs that I use.

Forgot to say: stop relying on random commands on the internet. Learn to use the utilities yourself.

Type xfconf-query --help and learn to list all the properties of the settings you want and how to change them. All the information you could use is there in the help output.
>>
>>57526775
Which is why I'm asking for the right way of doing it as nothing I've tried worked.

>>57526787
Yes, I always try reading the man pages or a wiki first. For this specific case however, no luck. And I've been reading through it and trying everything I can. How exactly would you use xfconf-query to set it? I'll try with the wallpaper I have.
>>
>>57526870

xfconf-query --help
...
Application Options:
-V, --version Version information
-c, --channel The channel to query/modify
-p, --property The property to query/modify
-s, --set The new value to set for the property
-l, --list List properties (or channels if -c is not specified)
-v, --verbose Verbose output
-n, --create Create a new property if it does not already exist
-t, --type Specify the property value type
-r, --reset Reset property
-R, --recursive Recursive (use with -r)
-a, --force-array Force array even if only one element
-T, --toggle Invert an existing boolean property
-m, --monitor Monitor a channel for property changes

I'd use -c to select the channel I want to modify together with -l to list its properties. Then I'd use -c to select a channel together with -p to select the property to edit with -s to set the new property (hint: in your case it's probably a file path to the new wallpaper).

That has nothing to do with bootup times. You're complaining about the number of things being started during boot. Compare the time it takes to startup Cinnamon to Xfce or whatever you wanted to install and it will be nothing.

Slackware does not contribute to the Linux community, it never did.
Ubuntu, Fedora, Redhat, SUSE Linux are trying their best to take linux computing further by actually developing stuff. What did Slackware ever do. It's been there for ages. It survived so long but yet to achieve ANYthing. Much like a cockroaches that survived ice age but never really obtained anything meaning full like Dinosaurs or Mammoths.
This might hurt you but Slackware community is a poison that Linux has no use for. What did they ever contribute to? Developing/contributing to BTRFS? Snapper? Kcraft/Kernel hotpatching? FreeDesktop? GNOME? KDE? Wayland? Mir? Snaps? Flatpak? LXC containers? OpenZFS? OBS? Convergence? KVM? High-end Xeon (or instanbul) support? GRO? Systemd-ui/kcm? KIWI?

I'll tell you what slackware ever did: Bitch and moan about systemd - because bitching and moaning is ONLY what Slackware is good for. It's pathetic and has a negative effect on the community.

I think we should completely exile them, they can move to BSD or some other garbage.
>>
>>57529620
The slackware userbase is just as poisonous: they never did anything productive because they are too busy in going to online forums to show off their manual dependency management skills instead of getting real things done. They'll BLINDLY follow what their cult leader do: use an abandonware bootloader and preach its superiority over any toher bootloaders, or sperg about how vanilla their distro is.
When they are asked why they use the distro they ALL will give you the same brainwashed, mindless response: "Because of stability".
The users seem to forget the simple fact that Slackware does NOT fix ANY (again: ANY) upstream bugs. So if there's any bug in x-org or gtk, those packages will be just as buggy in Slackware as in Ubuntu. They just seem to forget that Slackware isn't more stable than other distros with the SAME bugs that causes instability.
Some of them will claim "Slackware doesn't have distro specific bugs"
However as I write this Slackware has had total of 35 security vulnerabilities: 9 of which is DoS, 13 remote code excecution, 10 Overflows, a memory corruption, a login bypass and 3 privilege escalations. (CVE details)

Now I know what you are thinking: "I should put my feet on the backpedal and claim it has ((less)) distro specific bugs"
Excuse me? I heard slackware is a "vanilla distro". If it were SO great, why are there vanilla bugs. If you are comparing to distros that are ten times more usable like ubuntu, I'd trade those bugs with usability and productivity. Ubuntu has paid, professional maintainers unlike an unemployed community of hobbyists.

[UPDATE] Now that systemd is in Slackware repos, some of the hipsters are moving to BSD with their tails between their legs.

Die, Slackware

f you do not want the VirtualBox modules to be loaded at boot time, you have to mask the default /usr/lib/modules-load.d/virtualbox-host-modules-arch.conf (or -dkms.conf) by creating an empty file (or symlink to /dev/null) with the same name in /etc/modules-load.d.
Among the kernel modules VirtualBox uses, there is a mandatory module named vboxdrv, which must be loaded before any virtual machines can run.

>>

You must find a way to use your .xsession. It's the best solution.

Otherwise you'll be unable to have a shared environment.

So find a way to use your .xsession.
maybe the following line could help
chmod +x ~/.xsession ~/.xinitrc

What is most lightweight distro I could run? I'm using lubuntu now and it's still very slow
>>
>>57531276
how do you weigh data?
>>
>>57531276
Probably any distro in which a fresh install leaves you with nothing but a command line should be light enough, providing you then install other lightweight versions of the things you need, like a lightweight window manager (maybe openbox or a tiling one)

That's what I thought. Just wanted to see if there were any prebuilt distros that would work. Thank you for not being pedantic

It is kde plasma. Where is the dpi setting?

Yes. There is a scale option which changes the size of some of the kde aspects. It doesn't make a difference to many things in the environment still.

Would it be pretty stupid to build a high performance PC and then run a Linux distro on it?

I feel like half the reason to have a high performance PC is so you can play the latest games at ease but using Linux it seems that you'd miss out on at least 1 in every 3 games that are released. How good is gaming on a vm like Wine or something similar, does it cut performance that much?

i3 looks amazing, all the shit you can do through having control over your OS looks amazing but it seems like a lot of work for someone who barely knows beginner programming. Seems like a big hassle to switch from an OS that 'just werks' (and takes your data) to an OS that also does 'just werk' but requires a lot of time and effort to look half decent and has a bunch of compatibility issues because it's neglected.

Am I missing something? Will I ever understand what it's like to have full control over everything your PC does? Is it even worth the switch? help

Hey /fglt/, I could really use some help here.

I'm running a very recent release of Linux Mint. I'm interested in setting up my own hotkeys for tab switching, copying and pasting, switching windows, and what not. However, when I set my hotkeys in the control panel, they often break when I try and run them. So I need to fix them.

I figure there is some source code I can look at for how these keyboard shortcuts are implemented so that I can debug these issues.

To find the source code, I started top and opened the control panel. Then I looked for the process and got the pID. But I'm not sure this is the right way to going about finding the source code, looking into the pid.

Can anyone help me? I need to find the source code for implementing keyboard shortcuts so that I can fix this bug and submit an upstream patch.

Linux is very good for some things, and Windows is very good for some things.

Don't get Linux on your main machine if games are important to you; Linux is best suited to learn deep programming topics and completely control the software you run. Linux is great for web developers, security analysts, or ambitious students and scientists. It can also be good for graphics designers and 3d modellers.

But, the truth is that Windows has a lot of money to spend conquering the big markets like gaming and video editing. The money and effort that goes into Linux is not focused on those areas, it's focused on secure, stable distributions to run services on.

Windows has DirectX for progamming GPUs, which is apparently awesome. The kernel is super optimized and fucking fast. You don't own the software, but you can make an amazing product quickly and get more performance if you use a closed source OS.

Use Linux if computer science and programming are important. If game development and playing games are important, then it's not a wise choice to choose Linux because you lose out everywhere. That said I fucking hate Windows and will never pick a career where my paycheck depends on their black box bullshit. I prefer to not be spyed on and have my keystrokes logged, and I don't care for games.

Hey fa/g/s

I want to leave Wangblows behind, but i'm not good with computers how did i get here?

In order to make the transition seamless(so i dont run back to uncle bill immediately), i want something that can do the following with MINIMAL effort, as it will take some time for me to figure shit out.

-steam gayman with decent performance
-virtual machine
-basic hardware compatibility

I figured Mint would be my pick, but last time i tried Ubuntu and basically i couldn't get my drivers working, and something went wrong with the steam install and it was forever broke.

Any tips will be appreciated
