Why is Debian a SJW distro again? They don't announce that shit like it's their selling point. it looks more like they made a page as a containment board to solve the problem. I wouldn't switch for such a petty reason, I've been running it for almost 10 years now.

Can someone explain the difference between linux and GNU?

I understand that the GNU software uses the linux kernal to run and is known as the 'user space'.

Is grep, cp and other basic terminal commands part of the user space or is that linux? What is NOT the user space?

Correct me if I'm wrong here:

The major differences between workstation distros are primarily desktop environment, package manager, what additional third-party software comes with it, and what versions of the linux kernel that the different releases run. Some especially autistic distros are generally more up-to-date and configurable. Some specialized distros have additional security features and what not.

That's it? You autists literally make a hobby out of arguing about desktop environments and package managers?

Is there any reason a professional not actively developing the linux kernel should ever use anything other than ubuntu/xubuntu/fedora? And even when picking between those, shouldn't this be a relatively unimportant, 30-minute decision that only marginally affects how you will actually use your system?
>>
>>57509688

First of all, only retards argue about distributions.

The core principles for choosing a distribution are: release schedule, package manager and package philosophy (patching and licensing practices). According to that, there is only a handful of distributions to choose from. Steering a away from those is idiotic, because you're getting your water downstream, when it's already polluted and pissed in.

Also, don't use buzzphrases like "workstation" or "professional" in this case. No one will take you seriously.

Workstation means nothing. Is it a station (computer) on which I do work? Basically, every computer ever. Professional? Look up what professional means and find a way to apply it to a distribution. If you bend the definition and shoehorn it into this context: how is Fedora "professional", when it's community ran?

Also workstation and professional are not buzzwords. In this case by workstation I mean non-server and non-niche (e.g. tails), which is an obvious and important distinction. And by professional I mean someone using linux for their job (e.g. developing software).

Not buzzwords, use cases.

what qualifiies a distribution to be "arch like"?
Poor packaging standards? Having to manually install the fucking thing?

With BSD you have the latter for granted.
But BSD maintainers don't like "poor quality" in anything they do, so don't expect the full "arch like" experience.
>>
>>57510131
>what qualifiies a distribution to be "arch like"?
Rolling release with something similar to the AUR available to expand the package pool. Obviously the more packages officially in the repo the better but you're never going to get them all.

>Poor packaging standards?
lel
>>
>>57510143
The closest thing to rolling release on mainstream BSD is FreeBSD.

>Obviously the more packages officially in the repo the better but you're never going to get them all.
BSD = no software, unless you port it yourself.

If you seriously consider switching from Communist Linux to BSD you should accept this at this point.
>>

>The closest thing to rolling release on mainstream BSD is FreeBSD.
So FreeBSD isn't similar to Debian in its ancient tier software then?

>BSD = no software, unless you port it yourself.

That's fine, I don't know much about BSD yet except their license, I'm willing to learn. Does BSD use Xorg? Like how smoothly can you move to BSD or does comfort go out the window.
>>

>Does BSD use Xorg?
Yes. Graphical environments like XFCE and KDE are supported on BSD.

>Like how smoothly can you move to BSD or does comfort go out the window.
Out of the window. First and foremost you should check whether it will work on your machine at all.
The hardware support for BSD platforms is extremely poor.

>>57510343
Pretty much. It wouldn't be wrong to say this. If you want to be more specific just add something else to professional to change the context. Or if you aren't a social retard just infer the context from where you heard it. Chances are if it's being discussed on /g/ it has something to do with technology. Then narrow it down by thread, like if it's being discussed in /fglt/ it probably has something to do with the subject matter of the thread.
These are just some general rules to follow though so don't expect 100% accuracy

GPLv2 is the most logical one.

GPLv3 is just rms being butthurt about tivo, and all things considered, anti-tivoisation clause doesn't help free software thrive and be developed and only scares off potential users/developers/vendors.
>>
>>57510414
Yes. I've heard of that as well. It doesn't surprise me that a retard like him thinks you're 'free" to do anything except when it doesn't fit into his ideology.
Linux isn't licensed under GPLv3 though. And I don't use a distro which advertises itself as GNU/ so that's fine as well.
>>
>>57510441
You got me wrong. I agree with rms on his stance on tivoization, purposefuly locking out the user from his ability to modify the software in a non-critical application (like a fucking dvd player) is pure douchery.
If you want to prevent it - just make a cause in your warranty aggreement that says tampering with firmware/software violates the warranty agreement and be done with.

I just don't agree anti-tivoisation clause in GPLv3 helps anything. It does more bad than good.
>>
>>57510489
>locking out the user from his ability to modify the software in a non-critical application (like a fucking dvd player) is pure douchery.
I agree. And you are free to not use hardware which does this. Doesn't mean that someone shouldn't be free to lock down software on arbitrary grounds as long as he isn't forcing you to use it.
>If you want to prevent it - just make a cause in your warranty aggreement that says tampering with firmware/software violates the warranty agreement and be done with.
Yeah, that would be a better way to achieve this.
>>
>>57510441

>you're 'free" to do anything except when it doesn't fit into his ideology.

I guess you do.

And just you know, he isn't a god, merely a saint in the church of emacs, so he can't force people do anything, just state his opinion/ideals.

>Linux isn't licensed under GPLv3 though.
That's a tricky one, since there are a lot of developers who would like to re-license it under v3, the undertaking would be huge and most see it as not worth it, even though they are for it. Linus sees v3 as political not pragmatic.

Also about GPL, v2 and v3 are not compatible, unless there is a "or later" cause used in v2, so it can be "upgraded" to v3. It's something to keep in mind when choosing a gpl version.

Nope. Even if that was the case it wouldn't make it acceptable.
>I guess you do.
Nope. Never said you can't use anything you like. It's just my personal choice to not use something. It has no effect on what you can do and I won't go around telling everyone not to use something I don't use myself like your cult leader does.

>since there are a lot of developers who would like to re-license it under v3,
But that doesn't matter in the scope of this discussion. I didn't state anything about the past or the future. I just said that it isn't licensed under v3 right now, which is true.

Yeah, for Nvidia always go for proprietary drivers. The open-source ones are sub-par in quality.

If you ever get an AMD discrete GPU, just remember it's the other way around. The open ones work, the proprietary ones are garbage
>>
>>57510976
Ok thanks, I'll give it a try then.
>>
>>57510984
Bear in mind that installing proprietary drivers you risk your system not coming up after an update.

You're better off picking a distro with a release/update scheme that doesn't upgrade kernel version and Xorg version often.
Ubuntu LTS, openSUSE Leap or even Debian stable would all make a very sane choice.

CentOS fits this description as well but it's not a very desktop-friendly distribution and it has tiny repositories.

I would advice against Linux Mint (despite it being almost entirely Ubuntu LTS under the hood) due to security concerns.

Generate an Italian locale.
Download a language pack for Firefox.
Most packages come with all the translations available (Firefox being an exception, probably because it's so big, I guess). You just have to set your locale properly.

"sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales" shows all the intended locales as already generated, picture related.

About Firefox: I installed it after I took the pic, this one is easy enough. It doesn't fix MATE still though. (And I'm sure as fuck MATE has Italian packages.)

TL;DR: I'm learning Italian and German because I feel doing so. I like learning languages. Among all three (DE, IT and EN), it's the one I like the most, followed by German.
>>
>>57514591

>LANGUAGE=
That might be it, but I doubt it, because it should inherit from LANG.
Kill the Mate panel and start it from your terminal with "LANGUAGE=it mate-panel" or however that panel's executable is named. See if it uses the Italian translation.
Also, try starting it with LANGUAGE=de, and see if everything is in German. If it is, that could mean that those specific strings haven't been translated into Italian yet. Check the Italian translation files in the source to verify it.

I have a main Manjaro install, secondary Windows and now I installed third system (Ubuntu 16.04)
I did the install with debootstrap but skipped the grub part because I want to use only the Manjaro's /boot partition. Now when I run os-prober it finds Ubuntu install and when I run update-grub (or grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg) from Manjaro it also shows it found Ubuntu but does not create a menu entry.

Do I have to set up grub in ubuntu to boot it? Ubuntu's /boot is empty (no vmlinuz or initramfs or grub/) If so, how can I do it without touching anything outside of Ubuntu's install and while still using grub configured in manjaro.

What does 'Aborted' mean when I get it as an error and how do I debug it further? I'm trying to start a Unity game and it just shits out after 1s and I don't know why

Completely new to Linux here, interested in getting started on Ubuntu. I'm on a tight budget so I'd like to get a Chromebook and run it on that. Any recommendations for a good chromebook for it? Preferably one with upgradeable storage.

is Linux from Scratch exepted in /g/ ? Or do i need to install Gentoo ? is it ok to have lfs with compability to gentoo ?
How much compability to gentoo do i need to be accepted ? is slackware ok ?
>>
How good is Linux with Kaby Lake CPUs? I remember reading that either Poettering or some kernel developer complained about Skylake power states being extremely difficult to implement.
>>
>>57518671
Lol. Slackware is actually neato.

>LFS
>Slackware
We all use RHEL now
>>
>>57518671
LFS sounds fun on paper but it's actually just a chore
you'll just do some mindless menial work for 6 hours and then get an useless system
also get owned by exploits because keeping shit updated without package managers is a PITA

just get a proper educational distro for fun and a proper real distro for actual work

I recommend aboriginal instead

This. LFS is excellent if you wanna be in kernel dev etc, and if you're into tight control of system resources, but if you value security at all you're gonna have a rough go of it.

Don't use Mint. Use Ubuntu.

Couldn't you write scripts to check for updates or is it one of those things that you might as well just switch to a distro with a package manager.

If Arch is meant to be simple, why doesn't it have a simple installer?
>>
>>57518599
Try both DEs and see what you like. Personally, I prefer MATE.

Cinnamon just werks and is pretty nice, but it's not super-customizable compared to MATE.
>>
>>57519008
it helps keeping kids out of arch
>>
>>57518919
The latter. It's possible, but it's hard to automate, it's hard to manage dependencies, heck it's hard to even find out about the updates sometimes. Consider that even a very barebones desktop has maybe 200 packages (incl. 100+ libraries). And god forbid you have a libc update, requiring you to go rebuild everything and pray that nothing breaks. All that effort for a solved problem. It's no wonder most small distros stay compatible with upstream whenever possible. Package repositories are a giant time sink.

Write a script to display the time every 15 seconds. Read the date man page and display the time, using the %r field descriptor. Clear the window (using the clear command) each time before you display the time.

did you remember to create a key pair?
gpg --gen-key

google says that pass init takes a key id as an argument

Why? Everybody on this board suggest Mint for people who never used linux.
Isn't Mint Ubuntu-based? How big is the difference anyway?

People who are new do it, because they don't know it better.
