The main difference is the package manager and the modifications (if any) they make to upstream software when they package it and then there's the base system and how it's setup, the defaults and other small things.

>When debiantards say 'stable', they mean 'doesn't change' and not 'doesn't break'.
When a package changes, those changes are more likely to cause issues/bugs. By 'stable', I mean just that: stable. The packages aren't perfect or without bugs, but they typically have far less bugs compared to newer packages because they've gone through a long period of testing and usage. They also receive security updates for critical bugs.

Debian adds NOTHING to the Linux community except for an SJW hugbox. It gave Linux absolutely ZERO new projects. What did debian ever do? Developing/contributing to BTRFS? Snapper? Kcraft/Kernel hotpatching? FreeDesktop? GNOME? KDE? Wayland? Mir? Snaps? Flatpak? LXC containers? OpenZFS? OBS? Convergence? KVM? High-end Xeon (or instanbul) support? GRO? Systemd-ui/kcm? KIWI?
What DID debian give back to the Linux community in all these years?

On that same note though, Slackware is even more trash. At least debian gave birth to the far superior Ubuntu, it has negative contribution to the Linux community.

Slackware gave nothing bad but unlike debian, it's there to bitch and moan about Systemd - that's ALL what Slackware is good for. Unlike debian, Slackware is THE bloat of the Linux community.

I dont know much about linux, but I have a ubuntu server computer running Plex.

I manually mount it every time I reset the server.

Is there malware on the system?

1. There's no malware in your system

3. Next time use ext4 and systemd-automount for less pain in the ass
>>

Thanks.

Server has been running for months and usually doesnt show anything.
I tried to play a movie that was corrupt and it refused to play, went and opened up the server and it was showing this.

This hard drive was on a windows plex which is why its in NTFS. Its been a whole lot less hassle and runs way better in ubuntu server. Ill look into ext4 when I upgrade my hard drive.

Wouldn't that only use one drive (sda)?

That looks like the LVM on LUKS method from the arch wiki, also tried with it and after the installation couldn't boot because root was inside the LVM and never prompted for password.
>>
>>57447784
You need to add crypt_root= root= and dolvm to the grub cmdline. If you still have the install, try it by pressing 'e' at the grub prompt and adding at least dolvm at the end for the kernel line.
However, your initrd also needs to have lvm and luks support.

Also yes, that's one disk. I don't think you can use a second disk in the same pv but maybe you can look around and there's a way to do it.
>>
>>57447833
Nevermind, I figured out how you'd do it. Of course it's one disk per physical disk, but you can
vgcreate vg disk1 disk2

to include the second disk in the vg.
>>
>>57447833
I've been doing it with systemd-boot instead of grub because for some reason with grub the drive doesn't even get recognized as bootable by the BIOS, it goes straight to the USB or "no bootable media found".

I'll keep trying tomorrow but now in a VM with snapshots, reinstalling after each fuckup took a lot of time.

Thanks for replying by the way.

Well, it was one of the earliest distros (if not the first) to create a solid, easy to use distribution with most of the attributes I've listed above. The quality of the distro shows in its popularity and longevity.
>At least debian gave birth to the far superior Ubuntu, it has negative contribution to the Linux community.
Ubuntu is just Debian++, powered by Canonical, a single entity.

I'll admit that Debian isn't PERFECT. I just think it's the best overall for all the previously listed reasons. If you don't care for those reasons, or if a different distro works better for your needs, then by all means use it.

First off, ask yourself what those "terminal commands" are. Hint: they're mostly just simple programs located in a directory that's in your PATH.

Your hardware buttons are, I assume, keyboard buttons. So what you want is to create a shortcut which runs a certain program. One of the MOST COMMON tasks you can want.

tl;dr: yes, assign a shortcut to it.

I understand a rt kernel implies greater latency in deliveries under load but addresses high priority tasks in a way that my guests can be tuned to prioritize their own CPU time over the host's I/O latency.
My windows based guests drop audio outputs and must have their devices reset because they can skip several dozen milliseconds at a time under high load.

That is what I am looking to do.
Just never built a kernel before.

When something is open source, you can exactly determine since which version a line of code was added. When someone discovers a problem with said line, you have an "old bug". I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Already read it, but the only thing it says on the matter is that I should use "fade-exclude = CONDITION" and although I know how the condition system works, I have no idea of how am I supposed to identify context menus to include in the condition. I'm not even sure if it actually works on them.
>>
>>57454348
By default compton window fade is disabled, so remove anything in the conf file pertaining to fade.
>>
>>57454353
Yes but I do want fading for normal windows. I just want to disable it for context menus which should be possible with the fade-exclude option. I just don't know how.

Telepathy haze in the arch repos is useless. It doesnt make, say, steam available through KDE telepathy, and the files one apparantly has to tweak to make it provide extensions rather than just libpurple arent fucking provided, nor is any documentation on how to make them, which I can also not find online.(haze.manager is the main thing im thinking of)
How to get KDE telepathy to use steamchat pls I dont want to use pidgin anymore

I want a systemd-free distro that actually works. Wat do?
>gentoo
Fantastic in all regards... except hibernation is broken and nobody knows how to fix it.
>funtoo
Same.
>void
Doesn't seem to support UEFI without jumping through hoops, and that's just to test if it can hibernate.
>devuan
Buggy like debian, with an extra layer of bugs on top.
>manjaro
X stops working every 15 days (I counted).
>freebsd
Doesn't support the last 4 generations of intel CPUs and bhyve is still crap
>openmemesd
LOL
>windows
pls no botneterino

What are the other options? Hibernation is known to work on ubuntu, but there doesn't seem to be a way to move the ubuntu kernel sources to gentoo and compile them, as even the -source packages do not seem to actually contain complete sources.

What I need at the minimum is:
-drives, cpu, mobo, screens, keyboards, mice... support
-pci passthrough (kvm + qemu) support
-ability to hibernate without hanging the system
-cancerefi support
-intel integrated gpu support
Even if performance is shit I can just move the workload to the vm (though I'd rather not when viable), but if the hardware plain doesn't work, it's another issue.

who the fuck even hibernates anymore?

>>
>>57454822
Arch (and most archfags) is extremely hostile to people who don't want to use systemd, though, going as far as to hide perfectly good wiki pages behind redirection after redirection and then adding a huge WARNING THIS WILL BRICK YOUR SYSTEM text on top of the page for how to get out of the systemdick's way.

Other than that, it shares the same issues as manjaro in terms of updates breaking everything all the time - a measurable, repeatable fact.

>I want a systemd-free distro
Explain why. And name one time you've ever touched the low-level-userland for an extended period of time.

Use Ubuntu if you want shit to just work and stop unironically beliving that systemd is an nsa-boogyman. It's FOSS and even Stallman uses it.

But if you're determined to not use systemd, you'll have to suck it up and accept that you're not going to be able to hibernate.

I tend to like a more traditional graphical experience, plus I don't want to dick around customizing shit for a few hours just to hate it later. It's the best productivity wise but it's not really my thing i guess. so far my biggest complaint is the gnome launcher, it's like mission control but shittier.

After switching from windows I just realised I have no AV on mint or the ubuntu distros I'm trying out. I think. I figure I don't need some always running AV because hurr derp the best AV is common sense and linux isn't targeted like windows. but are there still one time scanners I should worry about like MWB or spybot?

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
