Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Void Linux

Exherbo

Funtoo

Devuan

Debian and Gentoo are ok if you want to use systemd.

Manjaro and Ubuntu are the best beginner distributions.

Architect or your favourite installer
>>
>>56180864

No, your locales aren't set correctly.

>en_CA.UTF-8
>locale -a shows only en_US.UTF-8, POSIX and C

You need to uncomment en_CA in your locale creation file and run locale-gen.
Which distribution are you using? Let me guess, you're using Arch. You started "ricing" your l33t hacker music player without even finishing the essential parts or understanding them.
>>
>>56180954
All the time you waste on finding an alternative way you could have put into installing it already.
>>

Kill yourself, poser.
If you actually needed Arch and had used it before, you'd know that installing it takes 5 minutes (not counting download times).

>>56180979
yeah heard of this, even tried it before i think, but i'll give it another shot.

I just started using i3 and it's pretty neat. Have only ever used "normal" desktop environments in the past. But so far, I like it a lot.

However, I have noticed that when the screen blanks due to inactivity, it has issues when I am active on it again. I am using a dual monitor setup (one laptop one standalone), and for whatever reason, the laptop monitor will stay blacked out until I reboot the computer. The standalone monitor works fine, though.

Even when I unplug the standalone monitor, the laptop monitor stays blacked out. Any ideas on what's causing this?

I'm using Debian stable (Jessie).
>>
>>56181002
>>56180619
>>
>>56180990
I did the essentials. I am using arch and everything is working as intended.

Anyways, I uncommented and it worked. Originally, I had en_US.UTF-8 uncommented and thought that is all I needed. Would it be fine to have both en_US and en_CA uncommented?
>>
>>56181066
Thanks but I was just curious if people are actually bothering to switch out ondemand for something else.
Sidepoint: I just tried to switch to powersave by adding a file to /etc/defaults/cpuwhatever but Ubuntu switched it back to ondemand. Gonna find out what caused that.
>>
>>56179784
Does literally no one use KDE here?

How is it that when I run this
echo -e -n "\a"

to produce the bell character, in urxvt I get a different sound than when I run the same command from a tty (in a tty the sound is a bit higher pitched)?
Also, if I run this script in xterm
#!/bin/bash
for i in `seq 1 30`;
do
echo -e -n "\a"
sleep 0.1
done

the pause between beeps is much longer than when it is executed in urxvt or in a tty, but the script execution still lasts 3 seconds although the number of beeps is reduced to 20 or so. It sounds the same in urxvt and in xterm.
Also, if I execute the script in dmenu, the sound is the same as in a tty.
The speed in a tty, urxvt and dmenu is the same, only xterm lags.

I have to say, this perplexes me.
>>
>>56181115
Why exactly do you want to manipulate CPU load?
>>
>>56181101

You obviously didn't do the essentials. Reading the few sentences in the Beginner's Guide which explain how to set the locale are essentials and you missed that. It wasn't working as intended.

As the guide stated: you can uncomment and generate as many locales as you want/use.

how do I uninstall something without breaking everything? When i'm going to uninstall something it suggest getting rid of a bunch of other packages, am I supposed to just trust that those packages aren't needed or what?

Asking because a year ago my linux install broke completely after I uninstalled something (I think it was wine), I pressed y and something critical about the DE was lost, couldn't even connect to the internet. Didn't lose anything and was only a few minutes to reinstall but still a pain, I literally haven't uninstalled a single thing since then. Using debian btw.

I sorta agree, although i never had any config problems. It just werked out of the box on debian.

Oldfag here.
Cause and effect.

Few threads ago there was this huge shitfest between Arch and Debian users on topic of dep handling.
Debain's deskop meta repos include bunch of bloats that has nothing to do with the DE projects.

Archfags, not knowing the fact that debian's retarded repo doesn't have -meta tags, were claiming that removing transmission removes desktop. The rest was butthurt shitposting

Today some anon states removing WINE removed his desktop and network. Archfags went turbo on debianfags' ass ITT.

We all know deep down they respect each other more than wincucks.

Hello, /fglt/.

So basically at the top picture, there is an X, a minimize and a maximize button built right into the firefox browser. The bottom picture is my current setup with openbox and the same firefox theme.

I was wondering if this can be done since I want to reduce the amount of screenspace that openbox takes and move the minimize, maximize and close buttons into the browser.

I am dual-booting arch with windows and I have seen this done on windows, just not on arch. Firefox setup is exactly the same between both OS'es.
>>
Im confused as fuck.

Using Qbittorrent, installed it earlier today on a new linux mint install.

When I go to usr/bin and double click on Qbittorent, it opens 1 version of Qbittorent

When I try to open a magnet link from firefox, it opens a second version. Its clearly different, the theme is different it has no downloads in it.

I told firefox to use the /usr/bin qbittorent file, and its still running the wrong one.

Anyone know what the hell is going on?
My VPN software was acting all fucky too. I only installed mint on it this morning

It just randomly becomes lines or dots usually when opening a menu or clicking on something. and once in a while it will just fix it self

Running opensuse 42.1 with KDE

also anyway to get spotify to actually work on this version

That just makes my background black, there is still no transparency.

try compton instead of xcompmgr

For real why can't I save files with uMatrix on? Site is whitelisted, folder permission is okay, wtf is going on.

Ok so my entire GUI just died after I installed a custom font from AUR (yaourt Gohufont to be precise).

Now my display is stucked to some grey unicolor background and blinks if I start messing with keys. CTRL+ALT+T doesn't call the terminal but blinks a dialog box instead, then disappear.

tl;dr my GUI is fucked, how do I get it back to normal?

how do I safely install a new kernel? I'm on ubuntu 16.04 with a 4.4 generic kernel but just started doing music production and want to move to a low latency kernel.

What is the best binary distribution for someone who is experienced with Gentoo?
>>
>>56184314
sudo apt-get install linux-lowlatency
>>56184290
1. reboot
2. Press Cntrl Alt f1 or f8 to go into console
3. sudo pacman -rns gohufont
4. sudo reboot

>>56184342
depends what package manager you like
>>

I've installed compton and I've been tweaking with the config. As I expected, window transparency on the terminal still doesn't work. Should I be adding something to the config file to allow it?

Does anybody know of any libre software for simulating logic gates? Also the ability to define modules of groups of circuits would be cool too.

it's really that easy?

Ktechlab from KDE.

You gotta compile it though, it needs qt3. The best idea is to run it under KVM/QEMU

thank you. it worked. ;^)

I don't see a reason for it not to work, are you sure you're running compton there in the background?

I just found out that networkmanager stores passwords in plain text by default. Is it just networkmanager that does that?
>>
>>56184555
who cares, they're just wifi passwords
>>
>>56184547
Okay so I figured it out by using these two in my Xdefaults:
urxvt*depth: 32
urxvt*background: rgba:0000/0000/0200/c800

The problem is that I don't know how to control the transparency value or the color since hex colors are used in the terminal. Would you know how to change the color and transparency?
>>
>>56184555
It does store WiFi passwords in plain text

Also, you can connect to wifi like this and the terminal won't hide passwords:
nmcli wifi connect <<SSID>> password <<plain text password>>

Question is, is encrypting password really necessary?

How can I reload the settings in /etc/modprobe.d without restarting the computer?
>>
>>56184547
Actually you know what ignore what I said I figured out the transparency using the original command that you posted.

The reason it wasn't working was because I had a different line in my config setting the background color and that took place instead.

Thanks for your help anon.

>>56184589
try to replace
rgba:0000/0000/0200/c800
with
[80]#000000
now
you can change the 80 to what ever you like to control transparency and it's usually easier to deal with hexadecimal colors like #000000 (because they're more widely used)

I'm trying to change Gentoo's kernel. I've been using
eselect kernel set
but screenfetch shows the old one, even after rebooting. Is there anything else I need to do?
I swear I'm not retarded.

What distro should I switch to? I do basic python development and a bit of rails dev. Currently on Ubuntu 16.04 It's pretty nice but I do not like all the bloody bloatware on it, like the software center and a bunch of things being pre installed. I do really like how easy it is to spilt windows (just drag a window to the edge and it will automatically take up half the screen) Can I use the same WE or DE with other Distros?

I was thinking of either using Manjaro since apparently it's lightweight or maybe just using Debian because Ubuntu is based off it so it should be lighter? I just want a distro with a terminal and a web browser set up without allot of bolatware.

Arch sounds tempting but I have work on Monday so I can't spend 2 weeks setting things up.

anyway, yeah DEs can be used in all the decent distros.
