Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Want to change distro from ubuntu, where do I go? I've heard a lot of people try debian after ubuntu. I'm not that well versed in GNU/Linux but I am hoping to learn with a new distro.
>>
I've been dual booting Windows and Linux Mint for about a year now an am switching to Debian w/ Windows (hopefully down the line can get rid of Windows altogether, but that's for another time). Two questions:

1) I'm planning on just destroying the Linux partitions (I have three: filesystem, swap and my primary partition) and then installing Debian in place of where they used to be. Is this fine, or should I leave the partitions on there? I don't plan on using mint in the near future and I have no files on there I haven't backed up to put on the Debian OS.

2) I noticed the Debian live CD doesn't have wireless support. That's fine, as I can get a wired connection to install Debian. But is it pretty easy to get wireless support after that? I didn't have to fuck with that at all with mint, it just werked. If it's just download the drivers that's no problem, but should I anticipate any other issues?

So a couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu on a partition to try Linux for the first time. I've really liked it, and my Windows partition is screwed up, so I was thinking of just getting rid of Win10 for good. Now my question:

Is there any way of formatting the Windows partition and make it a "data" partition for Ubuntu? All of this without losing anything on the linux part of course.

Can I just format the win10 partition as ext3/ext4 from ubuntu?

Sorry I'm a n00b :(

>>
>>56145460
Yes, you can format a partition to ext3/ext4 using fdisk or parted.

Then you have to edit /etc/fstab and add that partition that you formatted (e.g. /dev/sda1) to mount it automatically on boot.
The line should probably look like:
#Append this line to /etc/fstab
/dev/sda1 /data ext4 defaults 0 1

Otherwise, you would have to mount it manually every time you turn on your computer with 'mount /dev/sda1 /data'

man fdisk
man fstab
man mount
^ read these in order to figure how they all work.
>>
>>56145605
Assuming your windows is in /dev/sda1
$sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1
$mkdir ~/data/ && mount /dev/sda1

Or if you want GUI use Gparted

Correction: you format partitions with 'mkfs' not 'fdisk'.
Run
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1
to format /dev/sda1 as ext4.
>>
>>56145648
Oh after that see what >>56145635 said.

Look for players which have a "consume" like mode. I knot that mpd (or its clients, I don't know who exposes that feature) do have that.
>>
>>56145190

You're an idiot. Anything that you can "learn" on Debian can be learned on Ubuntu or any other distribution. The only thing specific to a distribution which applies to your "learning" case are package managers and switching distributions to "learn" to use a package manager is ridiculous; something only a full blown idiot would do.

Yes it is. Shuffle just means a randomized list. The problem most of the time is the list gets deleted whenever the program closes.
>>

Which generally useful skill is Slackware going to teach you that any other distribution can't?
>>

A knowledge of how Linux works in general. Which may or may not be useful for you, but in most other distributions (including Arch and Gentoo) you will only learn how to use this particular distribution.
>>
>>56145888
>already played recently
Then it would not be a shuffle

>randomized list
It does not make a secret list when you press shuffle mode, it indexes and scans the libary each time you request the next song.
>>
>>56145910

How is Slackware going to teach you about how a kernel works? Reading the kernel's source and researching how kernels work in general will teach you that.

Depends on what you want.

If you want the absolute best example of Keep It Simple Stupid - Linux, then I would suggest Slackware.

If you want to take inordinate amounts of time learning odds and ends to get the absolute most performance and utility out of your hardware: Gentoo.

If you want to dick-wave autistically while having an unstable shit system with regular breakage that's useful for nothing but time-sinks between tendies and anime: Arch.

Add songs to your Play Queue, shuffle it, it randomizes the order, but doesn't play ANY file twice until the entire queue has been played. It remembers which songs you've played from the queue even if you quit the program.

Bit of a retard question coming from someone who should know how to use linux by now, but I want to install lubuntu due only to the fact that it seems to be the only distro with documented support for the hardware I have. And yes, I know, shitbuntu etc etc.

My question is, is there a light installation of the distro out there? I absolutly HATE dealing with all the bloat that comes with the thing. For awhile I was installing debian via netinstall without an internet connection, and then just adding a WM and going from there since its nice a barebones. Is there a way to do this with lubuntu (or any buntu fork)? I wouldn't even mind it coming with a WM and utils, its just the bloated software I can't stand.

Thanks in advance anons <3

Wow, is that the best you can do? I guess that makes sense, considering your arteries are so hard and clogged, the bloodflow to your brain is probably as minimal as the fat on my trimmed, muscular body. You actually think the only protein comes from the flesh of tortured animals, charred to the point of being carcinogenic. Why don't you tell that to the delicious, healthy lentil soup I ate for lunch today? Oh right, just because I'd prefer it if our crops and water were spent keeping human beings alive instead of fueling corporate farms where animals are subjected to almost comically inhumane conditions and then slaughtered en masse is distasteful to me, I'm a cuck. Because everyone knows that if you're not torturing something weaker than you, you're a pussy. Well let me tell you something, buddy. I work out two hours a day, I eat a healthy, protein-packed vegan diet, my body is astounding and powerful, and I could kick the shit out of you. So how about you go cry into your greasy, carcinogenic steak, fatass, because I'll take a vegan shit on your grave for the many decades I will outlive you.

Step 1: stop eating meat. For protein, you can try beans, quinoa, lentils, protein powders that you mix into drinks, tree nuts, among other things.
Step 2: Start an exercise regimen. Start going to a gym or buy some workout equipment. Work out every day. You don't need to go crazy, just enough that you feel it. If you keep going until it hurts, you will eventually find an excuse to stop. Part of motivation to workout could be set minor, ACHIEVABLE goals daily and reward yourself for meeting them with like a chocolate bar or something. Having said that, don't beat yourself up if you can't meet it, and don't take "I met the goal" as your cue to put everything down and spend the rest of the day on 4chan. Work out as long as you want, as long as it is every single day.

Read Scott Adams' How to Fail at Everything and Still Win Big as well as his blog for some further advice on managing cravings, energy, and the like.

I've never actually been to /fit/ but from what I hear it's actually a nice resource even if you aren't gay.

Does anyone use multiple sound cards each with specific uses on Linux?

I've got two sound cards, one for speakers and one for headphones & mic. On Windows I use the Playback Devices GUI to switch between default devices but I've also got some programs set to permanently use a specific device no matter the current default. So for example I can switch between speakers and headphones and music applications, games, etc will switch over but my voice chat will always stay on the headphone device.

On Linux this seems like a huge pain in the ass that I've got to write a custom script for. I've just been experimenting with scripting pactl but you've got to gather all programs currently outputting on a device, switch the source & sink, and then assign those programs to the new source & sink otherwise they don't switch over. It also doesn't respect individual program settings to stick to a specific device no matter the current default.

Hey /g/, bit of a dilemma here.

So, I'm looking for a desktop Linux distro that is both lightweight and stable, and is up for everyday use.

I was using Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon, but even Ubuntu MATE ran smoother on my ASUS ROG laptop (older model, 8 GB ram i7 processor).

I was thinking Xubuntu, as I like XFCE, but it was rather buggy with their software center. I like Ubuntu MATE but it seems a little bloated at times.

For the purposes of Steam gaming, documents, etc. would Lubuntu be a good choice, or is there another mainstream distro that would be better?

I was thinking of trying Mint XFCE to see if it's faster, but seeing as how Lubuntu is a main alternative from Ubuntu, I figured it'd be better to use and it seems to need less resources.

Thanks for your input, been away from Windows for a year and a half now and I would like to keep it that way!

./FlashTool in terminal
if that doesn't work you're out of luck

It's literally the basic system installation that is same as in the windows, it selects a HDD to install into and then it starts its automatic routine of copying the system files and what not, there is nothing for the user to do wrong, the whole thing is automatic and then it fucking fails while installing the system
This never happened to me once with windows, guess that this really shows that linux is made by hobbyists in their spare time and not by professionals
>>
Okay stupid question, can linux use any wifi card for sniffing?
>>
>>56155800
damn what theme is that.
btw its already compiled

Is there like some simple apt-get or some shit i can do on a linux machine so that it will allow me to double click my .exe file and run it? i made it in visual studio with c# and need to run it on our server at work (my boss is a cheap shit and refuses to shell out for windows server)

noob here

Stopped by the thread to pick up some tips on where to start, like maybe a web page for someone who has been on Windows since 1995 and would like to escape microsoft and migrate to linux.

I need to start at pretty much base zero and all the various websites I've been trying start out in the first paragraph with language and terms that make the second paragraph incomprehensible.

Is there anything like a website that starts off explaining what they're talking about, actually defining the terminology as it's being introduced?

Also noting; a large segment of this thread is very much not "friendly." Is it always like this, or is this one just a bad night?
>>
>>56156120
set wine or wine program loader as the default program for .exe
mono might work too
>>
>>56156144
the shortlist:
use rufus to put an iso file of xubuntu on a flash drive
use your computer's BIOS to boot from it
wiping windows altogether is not recommended, make some space on your hard drive and resize the windows partition, which the installer makes easy

google everything you don't understand, and hope none of it is a cryptic error no one has had before.

done.

this is 4chan, don't mind the peanut gallery.

If i install the grub on an usb stick, does that mean the linux will only boot if i insert the stick and the windows will boot otherwise?
>>
>>56156198
as long as the boot device stays on the usb drive as default.
>>
>>56156190

Thanks for reply.

Wanted to read up on what I'm doing before installing. Tried Ubuntu and OpenSUSE last month when I had a free weekend.

Yeah, sure, you get all sorts of "choices," but presented in moonspeak, so they're meaningless. I find myself in need of a translation device from Windows garble into linux bargle. Google is polluted with a wasteland of useless forum posts and social media retardation.

Anyway. I'll google up xubuntu and see what that's about. Just getting tired of wandering around in circles and having "choices" thrown at me without any definitions or explanations of what I'm supposed to be choosing.

Really want a primer that explains how linux is structured so I know what the hell I'm building, and how to navigate it.
>>
>>56156336
You're supposed to be choosing an environment that works for you. If you're unhappy with something, pick something else at random.
Most people around here end up with Arch linux because new software. the arch wiki is a good consistent resource, as well.
as well, Linux From Scratch is a book that tells you how to build your own distribution from scratch.

Precisely what I'm tired of doing. I'm very time-limited, so I can't approach this like a video game that I'm exploring.

> supposed to be choosing an environment that works for you

Well, yeah. Finding actual descriptions of the choices so I can compare them and eliminate the obvious FAILs before wasting time on them ... that's kind of the trick.

Seriously, what you are suggesting is what I've been doing. Not happy with the results.

Example: this weekend I might have 8 or 10 hours to play around and try some stuff. Or, I though I might invest that time in reading up on what I'm attempting so I can make some efficient choices the next weekend I get a few hours free.

Last time I had 10 hours free to play around with linux was 4th of July. Not sure when the next one will be. Labor Day's already shot, so I'm hoping maybe before October gets here.

Anyway, appreciate the responses. I'll keep looking around on my own.

You're where most people are for years.
I ended up on Arch for years now. It's been good to me as far as just werking.
Setup's a bitch, and they purposefully leave stuff out so you can figure it out cough xorg cough, but it sounds like you're having trouble deciding what won't break. This probably won't break, shitposters aside.

Tech iliterate(although i want to learn) here i just got an old laptop in my hands, here is my question, what is the difference between linux mint xfce edition and xubuntu?
>>
>>56156819
mint doesn't ensure that the packages they send are the ones you get
but it also doesn't deal with (or deals less with) the shitfest that is ubuntu's custom packages.
go with xubuntu.
