Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

After looking for window-managers/desktop-environments I started using xfce with the i3 window manager, but, xfce-panel doesn't interface as well with i3 as i'd hope, and would now like to go to standard i3

However I like the "just werks" aspect of whiskermenu and would like to know if there is any application launcher that interfaces with i3bar/whatever-else-is-compatible-with-i3 well, and has a customizable icon

Any suggestions? I'm still relatively new to loonix, and was drawn to it by it's modulability

>>
>>55998807
The argument is "because". When you have a corporation pushing for one system and one system only you have to use the gray matter between your ears.
>>
>>55998807
> why not runit

systemd got here first and has Red Hat backing it. Having never used runit I can't say which is better.

There's also the fact that systemd is more than just an init system - its a software suite composing an entire low-level system.
>>
daily reminder:
>>55907440
>>
>>55998765
Low-level standartization is great, but the way it is implemented now is a cancer in itself, because systemd will lead to the unitary ecosystem ran by corporations, with appstores, late security fixes, NSA backdoors and all the shit we can see in Windows or OSX, only even shittier and with greater choice of DEs. They should have standartized APIs and keep any "standart" software, as long as it is absolutely necessary, as slim as possible. Instead they are basically writing Windows on top of Linux kernel and telling everyone it's good.
>>
>>55998851
>systemd got here first
not true and you know it
>>
Silly question, but can you force screenfetch to show GPU details also? Mine doesn't display GPU details at all in Ubuntu, and in Arch it only showed one, though I have two (laptop - one's the shitty integrated Intel graphics, and the others is Nvidia). I'm using proprietary drivers from both Intel and Nvidia, yet screenfetch doesn't show any of them
>>
If I choose to install a WM over an entire DE what other software should I install that comprises a DE?
>>
>>55998894
Your screenfetch is possibly outdated.
Use screenfetch-dev from github.
Also read the manpage: man screenfetch.
>>
Would you leave GNU/Linux if it became mainstream like Windows? Would developers have to start pandering to the mainstream crowd for you to leave, or would the "normie" infiltration/destruction of the community be enough to drive you out?
>>
>>55998887
Last time I checked Systemd was still FOSS. It's true that it will further consolidate Red Hat's dominion over the Linix world, but I sincerely doubt that things will get as bad as Microsoft/Apple. Late security fixes are never an issue with FOSS, and the NSA has a substantially harder time backdooring it. I also have yet to see any evidemce that Red Hat works with the NSA (Selinux having originally been developed by them is not evidence; it too is FOSS and has been audited many times).

So while some of your concerns are valid, I think that the open-spurce ecosystem will handle it.
>>
>>55998917
Oh thanks, I'll get right to that when I'm finished attempting to set up xSwipe; I just ran apt-get install screenfetch and though the latest version would be in the repository, but I'll check out the github
>>
>>55998935
There isn't really anything to leave it for at this point. It's more possible for Linux itself to split to normalfag part and "true" part, with them becoming largely incompartible..
>>
>>55998935
I use it for freedom and because it's simply better. I don't care about market share. Mainstream may add more support for drivers and games, which isn't a bad idea tho, but it will also breed bad distros (retard friendly instead of user friendly).
>>
>>55998935
I think widespread adoption would be a very good thing because it would drive corporations to take an interest in FOSS and make hardware support better.

There will always be minimal, anti-normie distributions for people who like old-school (shit, Slackware is still going strong after 22 years).
>>
>>55998943
>the NSA has a substantially harder time backdooring it
True, but the spaghetti code makes it hard to find backdoors too, FOSS or not
>>
Some things about init freedom:
https://devuan.org/os/init-freedom/
>>
>>55998943
Yes, it may not be as bad as I think, but still there's no real reason to like systemd. Especially considering a number of retarded decisions made through its development, turning it into a bloblike bloatware. I already sperged about binary logs in one of the previous threads, afair.
>>
>>55998887
>systemd will lead to the unitary ecosystem ran by corporations, with appstores, late security fixes, NSA backdoors

Red Hat already employs developers in critical Linux projects with MUCH less diverse contributions than systemd. Why is systemd suddenly different and bad?

The Linux kernel itself is about 85% run by corporate developers, and certainly practically everybody in a decision-making (apart from Torvalds) works for some company or other, and Torvalds trusts these people hugely.
>>
SystemD sucks. http://suckless.org/sucks/systemd
>>
>>55999021
Torvalds is actually pretty much triggered by systemd stuff like binary logs.
>>
>>55999040
According to what?

That doesn't even matter anyway, it's completely tangential to my point.
>>
>>55999021
What Linux projects are as critical as systemd? Corporation having control over the only init (and not only init) system is the corporation holding the whole linux world by its balls.

Two questions: One relevant, one not relevant.

1. How do I make pictures be different pictures when clicked on in 4chan? (like OP's image)

2. Has anyone here managed to get a custom kernel to run Fedora? I used to be able to use Grsecurity then one day it started throwing kernel panics, even if I just downloaded the kernel, loaded the system's configuration, and compiled that with no changes.

Will post more good stuff in exchange for answers.

For example, they called their fork of gdm2 "mdm" which supposedly means "Mint Display Manager". However, the problem is that there already is a package "mdm" in Debian which are "Utilities for single-host parallel shell scripting". Thus, on Mint, the original "mdm" package cannot be installed.

The magic is the gamma attribute.

4chan converts pictures to jpg thumbnails (without gamma), therefore you see RMS instead of Linus. If your image viewer supports changing the gamma, you can view both pictures (git related shows mpv).

Reminder for people who compress their PNGs: If you compress them, make sure NOT to strip this attribute (which is mostly stripped by default) or the magic is gone.

Thanks.

mpv was one of the "image viewers" I tested, did not think of changing the gamma.

Hey folks, I wanted to ask for your guidance.

I have a desktop and a laptop. I'd like to make a simple script for rsync (or something else that works over local SSH) so that everytime I run it on my laptop, a certain laptop folder is sync'd with the same folder on the desktop. Take it as: I do my daily college notes and work over there, and I'd like it all automatically sync'd to my desktop computer so I can continue going over my work there, without having to manually do it everytime.

How would I go about setting this up?

It doesn't have to be an rsync script, it could be anything from a terminal solution to a GUI-based solution. I'd just like it to be the simple

What the fuck is wrong with kubuntu at the moment. I just had a good working version which suddenly dropped me to a shell on boot. I couldn't get sddm to work so I thought it would just be quicker to install again, so I did that, updated and installed the packages I need, reboot and I get a black screen. I saw some mentions that sddm user needs to be added to video group but they solved nothing. I was really happy with it before this but it seems to be fucked even on a fresh install.
>>
>>56004339
It's Debian.

And no, not necessarily. The thing is that I don't have a public IP at home right now, so all my SSH sync'ing is going to have to be done exclusively when I get home everyday.

So it can be as simple as just me opening up my laptop, connecting to my home router, and typing some alias into the terminal to have X folder (and subfolders) in laptop sync'd with X folder (and subfolders) in desktop. I can get fancy later, but for now I just need it quick and simple like that

Ubuntu is based on Debian, so I'm assuming even Ubuntu would have LVM support.

If it doesn't, then just do it without LVM's and that's it.

Also, since you're on Win8.1, I'm not sure whether your Windows made an EFI partition. If it's GPT like Windows 10, then yeah just do as the guide says.

On a second thought, MATE is such as good lightweight DE, yet distros always release it full of shit like 2 web browsers, Thunderbird, 2 or 3 torrent clients, LibreOffice suite, 2 different versions of Java, 3 terminal emulators, 2 task managers, etc. Why the fuck do they do this? Hence I don't have access to a wired connection. Sucks living on campus. If I could install Arch I would. Maybe I'll sneak into the computer lab one day and unhook the Ethernet from one of the desktops. Until then, what should I do?

Also, how do you like XFCE? My 2 year old potato used to run Lubuntu for many years but now they're pushing LxQT which I can't fucking stand. Theme setup on that is a nightmare. You have Openbox as a WM so you need to set a theme for that. Then you need a LXDE theme for LXDE packages. Then you need a LxQT theme for qt packages. And you can never find a theme that has all 3, so it looks like an ugly mess. I booted MATE up and liked the default theme it came with. The only thing I did was change the fonts and remove icons from buttons and toolbars.

I don't even go as far as you do, I don't keep past versions, since most of what I write nowadays are simple scripts, or just a file of notes saying "I set up such and such, here's what I put int the config file, so you can set it up again if you need to reinstall, or know where to look if it causes trouble"

So it's just a folder with scripts and notes in it, some of which are in subfolders by general category. (eg I have a folder with all my firefox customizations - my prefs.js with comments in it about all the stuff I added, bookmarks, exports of addon settings, etc)

>pushing LxQT which I can't fucking stand.
>Theme setup on that is a nightmare.
How so?

LXQt allows you to easily select the look of Qt applications.
LXAppearance does the same for GTK+

>You have Openbox as a WM so you need to set a theme for that
https://dpaste.de/SB9c/raw
or Onyx, Syscrash or make your own

>Then you need a LXDE theme for LXDE packages.
First of all there is no "LXDE theme for LXDE packages" - it's called GTK+
which, you know, is what almost every other DE conforms to, including MATE

Adwaita or Breeze or any other actively developed theme based on Adwaita if you don't want to complain on internetz about "muh theme broke"

>Then you need a LxQT theme for qt packages. And you can never find a theme that has all 3, so it looks like an ugly mess.
Qt5 and Qt4 can emulate any GTK+ theme you have selected. There is also a native Adwaita Qt at least.
>>
>>56004939

Are you aware that Xfce has a window manager (WM)? It's called Xfwm4. It's a "full" WM. It's NetWM and ICCCM compliant.
>>
>>56008609

>Qt5 and Qt4 can emulate any GTK+ theme you have selected.
Not that guy, but that's horrible nowadays. Since Qt 5.7, they moved it to a separate package (it's just a minor inconvenience). What makes it horrible is that it's not "translating" it perfectly to Qt and the fact that it's using the GTK2 theme to get its info from.

I think I remember reading somewhere that they're trying to get a GTK3 QtStyle plugin, but I can't find that reference now.
>>
>>56008661

i saw no issues with it when i was testing it some weeks ago

Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”

nvidia higher ups have zero intention of helping the open source driver beyond it actually working for most people since as far as nvidia is concerned they have unpaid neckbeards working on a driver that is better than anything the community effort open source amd drivers could ever deliver, amd drivers WITH help from amd developers no less, you'd think the new effort by amd of amdgpu a unified open source driver (still has proprietary blobs) might change things but in reality it's just a move by amd to play catchup and nvidia don't have to lift a finger for a few years until the mainstream start adopting cards that will be supported by amdgpu

there's an old meme that nvidia suck for drivers on linux and while it has always been true amd haven't had "good" drivers for well over a decade, perhaps even longer now, so there's even less incentive for nvidia to put the effort in
>>
>>56011359
that's why I have stopped buying new pc hardware and switched to console gaming for whenever I do get time to play vidya, no one really gives a fuck about linux so fuck both nvidia and amd

How can i delete everything about vim neovim?
I want to delete every fucking config file and do fresh installation.
I installed github.com/amix/vimrc
but shit aint working
>pic how my nvim looks after installation of amix
>>
>>56011468
To do that, you must first donate at least $15 to children in uganda.
>>
>>56011455
nvim's config is in ~/.config/nvim
vim's config is typically in ~/.vim
Try deleting them.

If that doesn't work and no one here can help, then ask the vim subreddit. It's full of people waiting to display their elitist vim knowledge to anyone and everyone (solving your issue is a side effect of this).

Anon about compton.

>>55959954

Do you by any chance run it with the -b switch?

Like:

$ compton -b

This freezes my screen but the OS is fine and I can still turn it off with:

$ killall compton

You want to start it with & like:

$ compton &

This won't freeze your monitor and will run compton normally.

Hello there, I am facing a weird issue with my home server / NAS right now.
I don't know when these problems emered, but recently these entries started popping up in dmesg

...
[ 4.112197] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdc] Stopping disk
[ 4.116192] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Stopping disk
[ 4.598140] Adding 2097148k swap on /dev/sde1. Priority:-1 extents:1 across: 2097148k SS
[ 4.636823] EXT4-fs (sde2): re-mounted. Opts: (null)
[ 4.781326] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Starting disk

...
[ 84.820219] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdd] Stopping disk
[ 91.807118] EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
[ 91.807328] sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Starting disk
[ 98.987649] EXT4-fs (sdb1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
[ 98.987763] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdc] Starting disk

[ 114.493616] EXT4-fs (sde3): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
...

It starts and stops the disks a few times each before mounting them, which takes close to two minutes. That didn't happen before. I can't remember any changes I've made which would cause this to happen. The disks themselves are ok, no errors in dmesg or syslog.
Any ideas?

I'm on Debian 8 and I want to switch to Ubuntu MATE. I'm having a bit of trouble though. I made a bootable USB using Disks but the ISO has been corrupted twice now. Does this happen often or something?
Also, should I be using a different method for this?

>I'm on Debian 8 and I want to switch to Ubuntu MATE
Why the fuck would you do something that retarded after being smart and using debian

At least switch to Testing instead if you need newer packages

also to answer you, no that doesn't happen often, you're doing it wrong, use something like mkusb

but really use fucking testing

Ubuntu is shit (I use it myself and going to switch back to Debian at some point) but Ubuntu MATE is a pure turd
>>
>>56012929
I think I'm too dumb for it, personally. I've had a lot of trouble getting the damn wifi to work. Sound worked for a bit but now it doesn't.
Last time I switched to testing it failed to load something and would hang on that forever.
>>
>>56012999
When was this last time? Wifi is a bit of a cunt on Debian unfortunately, but what has worked for me in the past is installing the base system without wifi and then it somehow just werks post-install.
Can't guarantee that happening for you though, but if it's been a while since you last tried Testing I'd definitely recommending trying the newest release.
>>
>>56013174
Last weekend. I did a netinstall the first time.
I'm sure my wifi card or whatever works on linux since it worked when I tried it on a live disk on some other distro.
I don't really recall how, so would you mind telling me how to upgrade to testing? And should I uninstall anything I have now or does it not matter?
>>
>>56013220
You can either just download the latest testing ISO here
https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
or you update the sources file to use the word stretch instead of jessie by using something like gedit

do gksudo gedit and then just open the sources.lst file (can't remember the name, I usually just use the ISO)
Some other anon will definitely know more than me on this issue and may be able to solve your problem with the wifi on Debian so stick around or trying googling, Debian has fucktons of good up to date advice on forums out there.
>>
>>56013220
The last option I would recommend is just using mainline Ubuntu like me, don't use MATE, the only reason people use those lesser-known variants is when they have less than 4GB ram and I'm guessing you don't have that problem.
>>
>>56013313
Or, you know,just personal preferences.
>>
>>56013296
I'll probably just use the ISO since it looks a bit quicker that way.

i do go to reddit quite often these days though, does that make you hate me and want me to leave now? then good

Nope. There could contain malicious code in an open source program. Surely you don't blindly run programs you come across just because they're open source.

sudo dd bs=4M if=faggot.iso of=/dev/sdc

Why can't no linux program take screenshots with mousepointer?
>>
>>56014016
My point remains. You implied just because software is open source there couldn't be any sort of malicious code or "virus". This is flat out wrong, albeit rare.
>>
>>56014075
Y'all niggas always forget to && sync
>>
>>56014094
Why are you running an OS full of potential viruses?
>>
>>56014113
Because I put more faith in the developers of my distro and which maintain packages, are you retarded? There is a difference to that and running some random persons program on Shit Hub.

hi
anyone else having strange issues with latest stable debian release?

Both gnome disks and gparted is having issues creating ext3 filesystems on a gpt partition table. I managed to get ext4 up and running, i suspect the issue has something to do with ownership of the disk mount points or something.

The drives works flawlessly with ext4, i just found it strange. Gnome disks crashed while creating ext3 filesystems and gparted was just stuck forever on creating partition.
>>
>>56015188
Any reason you want ext3 and not ext4?
