My Samshit SSD died after a couple years and I need a new one. I was under the impression that Samshit were pretty good at SSDs, but I guess not. Was I unlucky or should I go for a big brand again? There's a cheap 240GB one by Integral right now and it's tempting.

Hello /g/

I was hoping that we could talk about network area storage devices.

Does anyone know of a good NAS with at least 4 drive bays for the budget conscious shopper?
123 posts and 10 images submitted.
>>
With 4 bays there is nothing for the budget conscious shopper, at least with a decent and not laggy monocore processor from the pleistocen age.
The only bang for the buck are the 2 bay ones, and they are fucking expensive for what they offer.
Your best solution is make your Nas yourself, pick a tiny motherboard, a tiny case with good storage expansion and budget processor with at least 2 cores. Or one of those mobos with integrated processor.
Drop there a FreeNAS, or Xpenology OS or whatever you like and you are good to go.
This is going to be my next step to retire my DS215j. After time looking for upgrades, build my own nas is the better solution.

Thanks for the recommendation, Anon.

Will a Pentium D do well or should I look at a lower power option?
>>
>>55189657
A Pentium D is too old, and consumes a lot.
When I say 2 core, I mean 2 modern cores, a modern pentium, or celeron, or even a 2 hand semi-modern Xeon. Even an Atom will do the trick, but a pentim D is nothing more than a housefire Pentium 4 with 2 bad deployed cores.

I fell for the meme years ago.

Now I'm stuck with this thing whispering to me how I'm a lazy bum for not doing something useful with it.
I did set it up as owncloud once but it isn't really strong and fast enough to handle a smooth use.

What are your favorite projects with the pi? Which ones did you actually use in the long run?

I made a piratebox with one once but no one ever botheres using it, Then i set up a internal only tor relay and ran i2p on it for a while.

You know, it just makes me want to buy one even more when it makes people mad. I do light gaming and need a laptop for portability reasons, it's as cheap or cheaper than other gaming laptops and I've wanted an Alienware since the late 90s. With the graphics amplifier I can use any GPU on the market with it while I'm at my desk. Why shouldn't I just get one?

Just buy one if you want one so much
>>
>>55188748
You know, you can just do whatever the hell you like, imagine that. All people here are saying that they are shitty deals, look like shit and may have really shitty other specs (battery life, noise, heat). If that still doesn't convince you not to buy one, then go ahead, nobody cares.

just finished writing thesis. lots of free time.
trying to install gentoo, arch, freebsd on a computer that already has fedora and windows.
in the end, it should have all five OSes with grub having all entries. how should I go about doing this? I never used a BSD. Any caveats?

>This thread again

Gentoo if you have infinite time to read source and compile your stuff for the astonishing ~3% performance improvement

FreeBSD if you want security. They have a good trick, it's called having no software. Greatly reduces the malware attack surface.

Arch if you want a perfect DIY distro but get cucked by unstable updates
>>
>>55188789
>this reply again
tell me about installing all three. not about the OSes

Follow each guide for install and then tell grub about it. Thats about it.
I don't know why you would want to do this and not just try them in a VM but thats your choice.

Why did Nvidia make the 1070s so expensive?

If they would sell it for the same price as the 970s, they would have sold gazillions of them again. But instead the 1070 is about 150€ more expensive than the 970 was and from what I can tell for most of the people the card is just too expensive.

at 1440p, will the hyped 480 really perform near a 1070 if both are OCed? MSI's lowest priced 1070 is about $450, but from my experience jumping on the R9 390 8g hype train the amount of Nvidia's supported games/application outnumber AMD greatly which almost defeated some of the value in their card.

i know i shouldnt feed the jews but i dont have the time or care to optimize every game i play. i have shit to do. should a casual like me go 1070?

i note that an i7 66xx is recommended while I have a i7 4490k, which probably wont factor much

>>
>>55188213

The answer is very simple actually.

No one knows yet, wait for reviews to come out
>>
>>55188213
You shouldn't expect a near 1070 performance from the 480, but it will probably still be alright for 1440p gayming. For $450 you can probably buy two 480s though and crossmeme them. That configuration should beat the 1070
Also don't worry about the processor, everything after the 2500 is a meme
>>
>>55188784
Why is everyone talking about xfire when discussing the rx480? Multi GPU solutions are effectively supported by a very few games, in fact, most games run WORSE on multiple GPUs than on a single one. Not to mention that AMD's crossfire bullshit is an absolute nightmare to even get working, let alone tweak to some tolerable performance levels.

OP, when you shop for a GPU, get one that will suffice for whatever you want BY ITSELF, not combined with another GPU or 4 of them. This pajeet mentality is just incredibly fucking retarded and will strangle every bit of joy out of your purchase.

As everyone keeps saying, wait for the benchmarks, but you pretty much have a better chance of winning the lottery than the rx480 has on topping the gtx1070 on anything.

iOS names all pictures you use from the picture picker "image" to preserve privacy, just in case if you had saved an image with a specific name, since you can't edit the filenames.
