I'm looking at getting a server at home.
Is it worth buying old servers, or building a shitty one, or what?
I'm looking to spend about $300 on the server itself minus the hard drives.
Are there any around that pricerange that accept 3.5" SAS drives? Or am I stuck with 2.5" SAS
Old servers get you a lot of performance for cheap, but if you have it running 24/7, you will pay so much for power that it will be worth it buying a new server.
For servers, I find that white-boxing is not really worth it. Just get a TS140 or something.
HP Proliant Microserver might be worth considering.
>>55573878
In my experience an x3650 will idle at around 60watts which is pretty good.
The biggest problem with the X series - which is by far cheaper than the tower series for IBM servers is that all of the cheap ones are limited to 2.5" HDDs.
I'm not sure if there's a controller limitation on HDD size. 2TB+ 2.5 SAS drives exist and if you're lucky you can get them for $150
Has anyone ever used a remote phone monitoring app? If so what's the best?
Just wanna say I'm a professional cyberpunk hacker and I have years of experience with corporate-level hacking, the most complex yet easiest to use program is the Gentoo distribution of the GNU operating system with the Linux kernel added on top of it.
Thanks but I'm an idiot... Like fucking stupid lol. But I have heard of Gentoo. I'm wanting one of those cheesy, free 14 day trial of spy on your partner things.

>free 14 day trial of spy on your partner things.
Yup, then Gentoo is the correct choice.
post yfw aplel users are too poor afford 320-384GB of total storage space or a 1440p screen on their phone.
>1440x2560 on a phone
I'd pay extra to not have that.
>>55574313
Why would you pay to use obsolete technology? Are you that filthy hipster who only listens to music on a record player?

i want to flash a kernel that disables system write protection on my HTC ONE M8
i have the t-mobile edition but the zip is for sprint, is it still okay to flash it?
yes. no problems at all
Your phone will most likely not boot with the wrong kernel baseband. If you are not rooted or unlocked at the bootloader, you shouldn't even be able to flash it.

That being said, go bother XDA with this shit if you can't figure out why that shouldn't work.
Now that the fog has cleared, what are thoughts on hardware advancement from now to 2020? Do you think there will be any big breakthroughs or game changing developments, or will the pace of technological improvement continue to struggle and stagnant like it has since 2008?
>>55573561
I think a bigger issue is that part of, at least- the reason it's stagnated is because planned obsolecense became more profitable. instead of putting out a much superior cutting edge product, it's more convenient and profitable to just put out yearly releases that are only marginally better, and people will buy that.
As for advancements, i expect to see the Smartwatch become more and more advanced until it can replace the phone itself. It's already halfway there. It just doesnt have the convenience of a large screen, but I can see it happening.
Why does a smart watch matter. Its essentially putting a strap on the smart phone that already exist.
There's a couple technologies being researched, like graphene and using light instead of electrons, that would revolutionize the industry. It's anyone's guess when those will be usable in any fashion, though
What happened to it?

Really considering getting a chromebook for personal webdev (using a company macbook pro for work). What do you think guys?

Don't fall for the Thinkpad meme.
Wait for Kaby Lake and Zen or jump on a 6600K for $200? How much of a difference can I expect? It will be paired with a 480 and maybe CF down the road.
bump because i wanna know too.
my fx9590 makes my room a sauna
6600K is overkill for an rx 480, you'd be better off with an e3 1220v4
Just get the 6600K.
Kaby Lake is a good upgrade if you use the integrated GPU for hardware decoding of video, other than that it's nothing worth mentioning.

explicit this pointers to structs as a function argument is not OOP in disguise
