I see anons running home servers off rasp pis or slightly more powerful equipment, and then there are the Xeons with 16gb RAM.

I'd like to build redundant storage with some hard drives. I'd like to have a portion that I could access over the Internet, and if possible maybe also have a portion that isn't accessible to this. At minimum I'd want to be able to access it at home from tiny hard drive laptop.

It'd be cool to be able to stream music or video off it, but if I'd have to transfer any files I wanted to use instead, that wouldn't be the worst.

tldr Could an anon help me understand, what would be the big differences between the server capabilities of a a) Rasp Pi/BeagleBone, b) old laptop, c) basic new build, d) pretty nice new build

You can do RAID over USB but it's a bad idea and most single boards have slow ethernet. You'd be better off searching fleabay for old server hardware. You don't really need a super fast CPU. 8GB+ RAM is a good idea if you want to use ZFS file system. Software RAID is probably good enough, but if you can find hardware built into a motherboard or a cheap controller card that would be the best. You could access the machine via ssh. Most NAS distributions have super easy to set up media streaming.

tl;dr more mhz = more throughput
protip: get everything set up and ready in a virtual machine first before you let the chinese botnets rape your shit
>>
Thanks. I'd figured I'd want a box over anything tiny or old.

It sounds like other than old server hardware, this project would be basically a logical increments minus the graphics card, and maybe with diminishing returns getting heavy somewhere between the Good and Superb builds.

I haven't decided on RAID vs ZFS yet, or which distro to set it up with.

That will be fun to learn on the security side too. Or maybe stupid to go to the effort of redundant storage and then possibly expose it like that. I've seen fail2ban mentioned too.

Am I the only one here who hates fags who obsess over their 500gb collection of horribly shitty hipster music?

They reject absolute god-tier phones because they can't store their gigantic shipload of shite music in lossless form because of no SD card slot, pic related.

If you are indeed that obsessed with your shite music, you would get a separate music player for it.

So /g/ I bought this today from a fucking grocery store (Smiths/Kroger).
It was $9.99 + tax.
I know it's a really bad Chinese CDMAids phone locked to fucking "Kroger i-Wireless" but like...
I'm just amazed what this thing is capable of for $9, not as a phone but just a device itself.
Here are the Specs:
Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core 1.2GHz
Adreno 305
512MB of RAM
4in 800x480 LCD
2mp camera with LED flash
Notification LED.
MicroSD card slot.
Anyways It's just awesome to me you can buy something for $9 and be able to browse the web and watch YouTube and listen to music and shit on it.
Like a fucking homeless guy could buy this to look at CP on it or whatever.

>Comfort
Comfort is subjective. I own the hf5. I use them daily for commuting and I have no major issues with comfort. I do sometimes use different tips, depending on what situation I'm in. Some are more isolating than others. Tips are use are the Ety triple flange, Comply Tx-100 and Westone Stars.

>Long cable
It depends on how tall you are I suppose. You can use after market cables.

If you have doubts about spending so much on something you may not like, get the hf5 first. That's what I did. I never regretted it. When these eventually give up and die, which probably won't be for a while, they've stood up to daily use very well, I'll be getting an ER4PT. Pic is hf5 with triple flange.

I've been tasked with replacing my sister's laptop, but she has zero respect for technology and quickly breaks everything she touches. Here's a laundry list of things she's done to the last machine, that was not even a year old:

*Paint on the screen
*Melted case from hair iron
*Bent CD tray
*Several Jammed Keys
*Several Missing Keys
*Caved in USB port
*Can't close properly
*Shattered hinge
*Gum(?) in fan vents
*Only turns on if slammed against the ground (for the last six months)

The point is I need to find something that's hardy enough to survive her disrespect, and cheap enough to not cry over when it doesn't anyways. Are there any laptops known for being impossible to ruin physically that are destitute tier? It doesn't need to be a good machine at all, it just needs to survive.

So now that ThinkPads are officially dead, what laptops are the ThinkPads of the future? EliteBooks? Precisions?

Yes, older ThinkPads are still good, but in five years your trusty T-series or X-series from before 2011 will be only good for basic tasks, not for full-time computing. The current ThinkPads being released won't even last five years, let alone 10+ years like the old ThinkPads that refuse to die. In the past couple years, Lenovo has made a firm decision to make ThinkPads into a purely consumer brand, not the business-class brand of yore.

This thread isn't for shilling ThinkPads. It's for shilling alternatives.

I am fucking overwhelmed.... I am trying to ascend to master race /g/ and I am just totally flabber gasted.

I feel like I have too many options. I hate all these options for master race PC's. I just want a decent PC that can play most games on moderate to high at 60 FPS.

However, I don't have so much capital.... I don't have a good desk, I have no monitors.. no fucking operating system(Windows 8.1 costs like fucking 80 bucks?)

WHat can I do?

Also, is it a good idea to go piece by piece or buy it all at once? Like where the fuck do I start? WHERE TO START? I am on logical increments but then someone on /v/ told me logical increments is dog shit.. others say its godly.. What to believe?

PLease help. I am on a 200 dollar dell laptop right now.

Pirate Windows 7.
Buy a single 1080p monitor, shit's cheap and still good.
Intel and Nvidia for gaming, GTX760 will do you just fine.
8GB RAM.
Go for one of the cheaper i5s.

Recently bought a X220i (Somehow a X220T with an i5)

Bought the 19+ slice battery this morning and this 9 cell battery from a 3rd party. The voltages are good, the mAh are great, the "gap" is there for the tablet version, there is a warranty, what could go wrong with this buy? Image related

Off course it's not lenovo branded, but still, specs are there right?
