Madam Web written by slott is a really shit character. Basically wrong about everything, while still acting smug about it and pretending to be all knowing, when she's almost always wrong.

Also "haha, I foresaw this thing that you don't know about and I won't tell you about, but you fucked up for not doing it like I foresaw because I didn't tell you". Then "I foresee you cannot ever beat this thing, it's impossible" beats it anyway "well I foresee everything after all and know everything, I'm still right"

I can't tell you future for some mystic reason. She's a bad imitation of old madam Web, who actually did come off kinda wise and had reasons for being mysterious.

This was such a pointless story that ammounted to literally nothing. This is why I don't buy it when people say "Slott has a bigger picture in mind!!", because all of his stories feel like shit he came up with randomly, with the "hey, wouldn't it be cool if..." mindset. There's no message, no larger metatext, it's all just a disjointed mess.

I just don't see it, I mean what IS Slott's bigger picture, anyway? Revamping Doc Ock? Is that it? What's the larger message of his run, the point of it all? All the best stories have something to say, whether implicitly or explicitly, they don't just exist. Slott has nothing of the kind, it's just a bunch of random stories that don't amount to anything.

I've come to accept that in AMazing SPider-Man, there isn't a larger meaning behind it all (or at least not one I've been able to decipher). It's all about telling the next big story. That's what his entire series is. Telling the next epic, which in reality is kind of amazing.

WHere Slott is today in The Clone Conspiracy has all escalated from Peter's start at Horizon Labs. Every story played a crucial step in getting to the next "Big" story in Slott's eyes. There's no huge moral, but I've grown to enjoy most of his stories as a ridiculiously extravagant Spider-Man epic that obviously won't change the status quo forever, but it still represents a very interesting and varied time in Spider-Man's history.
I'm actually really stoked for his upcoming Osborn epic. His portrayal in New Ways to Die was fucking gold and I think that's what we're gonna get.

>I've come to accept that in AMazing SPider-Man, there isn't a larger meaning behind it all
But that's wrong, the whole point of the character is "with great power there must also come great responsibility", it's in the text of Spidey's very first appearance. The problem is that Slott's Spider-Man has nothing to do with this message. For example, after Marla Jameson's death, Peter swears to never let anyone die in his watch. OK, this is a poignant moment that plays into the "great responsability" part... but then it's forgotten as soon as the next big story comes around. It's utterly pointless. Then there's Superior Spider-Man, which ends the same way, a character learns that age-old invaluable lesson, in this case Ock... only to forget it as soon as the next big story comes around.

If there is a theme to Slott's run, it's stagnancy, nothing moves forward, ever.

Stuff like this is why Horizon and Peter getting a job there really wasn't executed well, it just amounted to a lot of Gadget of the Week plots, plus a paper-thin supporting cast.
>>
>>90464119
This is why I always kinda preferred JMS.

Everything he did was pushing peter further towards being a more complete hero spiritually, physically and emotionally.

It flowed into a grand picture about who peter was becoming and carved out a place for him in the grander marvel universe.

Slott just doesn't seem to be doing that. Yeah sure there's a ton of change, but a lot of that change doesn't really fit. Making peter a science wizard or the new tony stark doesn't hold the same weight for a character that is somehow still defined by his years in high school becoming a supporting high school teacher, making life easier for kids like him.

>>90463946
Also I don't get it, this was two issues, did slot always plan on alpha being a poochie and being shove away immediately or did he just react to fan backlash because no-one likes his asshole character.

You need to stop expecting anything from Slott and the sooner you do that you sooner you can start enjoying this series. Read JMS, Jenkins (bite me if you disagree -- Death in the Family was godlike), Stern, or Kelly for growth.

Without Peter at Horizon, we wouldn't have got Peter with the technological resources to fend off Spider-Island. WIthout Spider-Island we wouldn't have gotten Ock infecting Pete's brain leading to superior Spider-Man. Without Peter's built relationships in AMazing, Ock wouldn't have been able to be as successful as he did. Due to Pete neglecting to get a PHD, Ock decides to enroll in school and meet Anna. Ock's entire tenure leads to Pete shattering his relationships with most of his supporting cast and getting his own company. Pete returning causes Pete's company to take a new direction leading to Pete becoming Tony Stark 2.0. And due to Pete's position as CEO we couldn't we now got The Clone Conspiracy. Obviously a lot of little things were left out, but Slott is one of the few writers that actually seems like he plotts his stories in advance and sprinkles their foundations as he goes on.

Slott used to be able to write works of worth but since he started Spider-Man it's just been a continual slide into a caricature version of Slott that is writing this series like a modern Stan Lee. Massive expository dialog with characters saying their thoughts rather than having them exhibited through actions.

Events happening in sequence isn't really the same as a solid character arc.

It's like, at the end of clone conspiracy peter has the sacrifice a lot of his companies tech and his personal wealth to stop the clone outbreak right. Now this is obviously going to lead into whatever the next storyline is.

Wether its a corporate takeover of Parker Industries, Peter losing everything, Help from a mysterious benefactor. And at the same time JJS is dead, that should be a big deal right.

But all this stuff is just another process in the sequence. I have no idea what that is doing to peter as a character.

Peter losing another Uncle to something he couldn't fight, disease should impact him. But I honestly forgot that happened until halfway into this post.

The decision to put all his personal wealth and his legacy at risk should be impactful, but I honestly only thought of it as lead up to the next story or a way to return to parker luck status quo.

It's just stuff happening, unlike Slott, there's no weight to it.

>>90464536
I still don't know if that arc is intentional or a comedy of errors. I swear I wouldn't put it past him to that by accident. Either way, I think it speaks a bit about sloths execution that this is unclear. He has great ideas but his execution is always lacking.

Lol I keep at no point am I ever stating Slott is writing a consistent character arc. I feel like you keep trying to assert that I have an opinion I clearly don't have. I maintain that these issues are best enjoyed as no thought inconsequential stories with ridiculous premises. Slott is NOT the writer for growth and in depth characterizations

This feels pretty hypocritical in different ways even if I hate alpha

What if the avengers early on decided spider-man didn't deserve his powers since the newspaper said he was a menace, so they used a device to the them away? What if you did the same to mutants? Decided they didn't deserve their powers, so you removed their x-gene.

You may have created it, but you can't take it away any more than other heroes could have judged you back before you were a fuck up. Hell I don't think Peter was any better early on. Yet no one could take away his shit once it was part of him, no matter how the media said he was a monster or how many times he fucked up repeatedly and accidentally killed Gwen stacy. Him judging someone else when he's been far worse at it early on but was given the chance to figure it out is hypocrisy

You can lock him away if he commits a crime, but taking his powers is hypocrisy.

Only one more story till we get to Dying Wish.
Thankfully we have Kingsley in the meantime. Also if anyone could recommend some major Hobgoblin/Green Goblin story arcs/issues numbers it'd be super appreciated. The Goblins were always my favorite Spidey Villains. In order of favorite to least favorite, it probably goes:

1. Stormin Norman
2. Venom (Eddie Brock -- TASM and SSM versions).
3. Harry Osborn (Green Goblin)/Roderick Kingsley Hobgoblin
4. Ock
5. Shocker
6. Kraven/Tombstone (The Big Man)
7. Rhino (only because of Joe Kelly)
8. Mysterio (he's a true showman and you gotta love that).
9. Scorpion
10. carnage
11. Chameleon
12. Jackal
13. Electro
14. Vulture
15. sandman
16. Hammerhead
17. The Lizard
18. Hydro man

I think one of the best hobgoblin stories wad that original spiderman wolverine crossover, where spiderman accidentally killed someone

That's where "original" hobgoblin died

Although this story had basically nothing to do with hobgoblin.

I'm one of the few people that like Morlun, he was basically one of the best and hardest pressed fights spiderman ever had. He's like death itself, he can't be fucked with or reasoned with, can't simply punch him out. Really not bad in original jms run.

Slott kinda ruined it though. Some of the stuff he did might have almost worked, but not most of it.

Whoever wrote Scarlet Spider was pretty damn great at taking iffy concepts from back in the day and doing them justice. Should've gotten him to handle inheirators.

The Other became a pretty nice power up in that story. It's mystic, bit creepy, but also natural. It flowed pretty well with Kaine. It was wild and feral, the hunter and prey.

Civil War Frontline and that Sentry Fallen Sun thing were some of the most horrible comics I've read, but I would take Jenkins' Spider-Man over 90% of the writers on BND. Especially also over Slott.

They really could have afforded to be a bit more subtle with the golden octobot in this arc. Also ASM was desperately in need of some more relaxed issues leading up to Superior. Goblin Wars is fine because it works in line with Peter switching during a typical caper, but going straight from Ends of the Earth to Lizard to Alpha to Goblins was too much too fast. Doing just one .1 issue isn't enough.

All in all, I actually do, although it may not seem like it from the amount of bitching I do. I started off really liking it, and then as Amazing Spider-Man continued on my enthusiasm dwindled down I started wondering what I was doing with my time. The stories were fucking boring and I was more interested in other Spider series.

Then Superior Spider-Man started and while it's certainly badly written in times (depending on your taste), it's a rollicking good time involving mindscape spider-fights, spider-murder, Spider-Island 2.0 complete with Spider-Henchman, the decimation of Shadowland and absolutely fucking up the Kingpin's empire. Slott did a lot of things right and Spock era Spider-Man was a unique time to be alive.

And then the AMazing SPider-Man Vol. 2 happened...and all my previous enthusiasm was flushed down the toilet. The first set of stories were shit and I feel Slott made Peter was overly pathetic in an attempt to distance himself from Otto. Then Spider-Verse happened and almost made me hope again, but I was immediately kicked in the balls by contrived storytelling and continued futzing around.

Then Volume 3 happened and while I was initally wary (for good fucking reason), the series has gradually improved from its inception. The Zodiac story was fun and while Regent wasn't fantastic, it certainly beat some of Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 later stories.
Super Controversial Opinion: I loved Clone Conspiracy as a straight up Looney Toons adventure set in the Spider-Man universe and also that it set up for a Spider-Man/Osborn reunion. I'm salivating at the thought of Pete facing a Norman with his wits about him.

It was definitely starting to drag (mostly Alpha), but now that we're hitting Superior, I'm gonna dip out. Been a fun ride this past week, OP, but all the stupidity that went into prolonging Superior (the lack of detection by friends, family, and fellow superheroes, the treatment of Peter, MJ, Felicia, Carlie, etc.) just grinds my gears. Was it enjoyable? At times, but I can't not be butthurt over all of it, let alone read it again.

Maybe I'll try and go through it again. Good on you, take care, OP.
