IIRC he was brought up in public housing (government-funded households for low-income families). He wanted to become a wrestler early and went to a wrestling school where he ended up selling popcorn and setting up the ring for a year or so since he was still underage.

UPDATE: Forbes is now reporting that WWE has reportedly contacted Kurt Angle, Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio and Goldberg about returning to the company for the WWE brand split.
